How to disassemble iPhone 5S
If modern schools were so modernized and fashionable that arithmetic would be taught not according to standard textbooks, but according to Apple inventions, for example, according to the released iPhones, schoolchildren would know for sure that after one comes a three, then the letter G, then again a three and G, then again the letter designation, but already S. Next would be a four, another four, then four S, five, a five with the S suffix and a five with an afterword C Fuh. complex system, huh? It is good that the corporation from Cupertino does not yet claim to be in the field of education and is content with achievements in the field of IT.
Why are we talking about this in the article on “how to disassemble the iPhone 5S”? So that you understand that there are much more difficult things than dismantling the iPhone yourself according to our instructions. With the help of this guide, you can easily and quickly disassemble the iPhone 5S into screws and cables.
For starters, our for iPhone 5S maintenance services
To work, you need the following tools:
- A set of screwdrivers for the repair of mobile devices. Make sure that the diameter of the tools in the kit fits the screws screwed into the smartphone;
- Small suction cup;
- Small plastic mounting spatula;
- iOpener. For those who are not yet in the know, let’s explain: this is a truly masculine accessory from Apple, originally designed to safely open beer. Did your eyebrows go up in surprise? We understand, but we urge you to wait a bit. You will soon understand why we need this branded opener.
We propose to once again go over the technical characteristics of the smartphone. What do we have here? Apple A7 processor with 64-bit architecture, innovative M7 motion coprocessor, 16, 32 or 64 GB of internal memory depending on configuration, 4-inch retina display with 326 ppi, 8 megapixel main camera and front camera for FaceTime video calling 1.2 megapixel, fingerprint scanner in the HOME key. And all this power and performance, dressed in dark gray, silver and gold, you want to make out? Get started! But we are not responsible for your actions.
Apple, as before, strives by all means to prevent a possible disassembly of the iPhone 5S. I must say that if you came unprepared without a set of screwdrivers, which we talked about at the beginning, you would be faced with an insurmountable obstacle in the form of firmly screwed in screws. However, thanks to us, you know how to overcome them. Without fear, remove all screws holding the case.
Have you unscrewed all the screws securing the panel? So get down to the fun part! If you have previously had to disassemble an iPhone, then the mechanism for removing the display using a suction cup is familiar to you. However, in the case of the 5S, we would advise you to help yourself a little with a plastic spatula to avoid drops and breaks of the screen.
If you are careful and patient enough, your efforts will pay off with interest: the display of iPhone 5S will begin to separate like clockwork. However, if you lift the retina component a little, you will see that a wire comes off the bottom of it, which connects the fingerprint scanner and the Lightining port. This assembly feature complicates our task a little, since by pulling the suction cup too sharply, we risk inadvertently damaging the cable. Obviously, this cannot be done, otherwise the wire will need to be replaced.
But we are not teapots, so we do everything carefully and carefully, bypassing the dangers and pitfalls of self-parsing the iPhone 5S. We use the same plastic spatula to separate the cable from the touch scanner.
We can finally take a full look at the internals of the iPhone 5S. Already at first glance, it is clear that in comparison with the iPhone 5, no cardinal changes have occurred. The most striking difference between the iPhone 5S and its predecessor is the disappeared battery removal tab.
With the plastic spatula we already love, we open the metal latches and start butting with the battery. Why butt? Because due to the abundant adhesive layer and the absence of a battery removal tab, it seems that the manufacturer wanted to definitely stop the iPhone 5S parsing at this stage. Surely the insidious plan was this: even if we get to the battery, we will forever get stuck in the glue on which it is planted, and we will surrender without seeing even the thinnest hair of Munchausen (read: a tag for extraction) in order to pull it out.
But the wrong ones were attacked! We found a way out and pulled out the battery using the same iOpener, like real men.
If you suddenly have excess glue, then during the initial parsing you can simply remove the adhesive grooves by creating new ones during reassembly.
Once you have removed the battery, you can proceed to remove the iPhone 5S screen. You just have to use a spudger to disconnect the cables of the front camera, image processor and LCD panel, and voila. the retina display can be removed without any problems! Note that there has been no progress, regression, or even any significant change in the 5S display compared to the five. The screen has not increased, has not decreased, it still has the same quality characteristics. No surprises.
Now we are quickly removing the fingerprint scanner from the HOME key. What an exciting moment. Externally, the touch-sensitive user fingerprint reader is nothing special. But the technology behind it is amazing. Getting you up to speed: About a year ago, a Cupertino-based company purchased a patented technology from Authen Tec, according to which the scanner “photographs” your finger, but does not send its image to Apple. In addition, thanks to the sapphire crystal shell, it is preserved for a long time and practically cannot be disassembled by such researchers as you and me.
Moving on to the main camera. As you can see, the marking reads: “DNL333 41WGRF 4W61W”. How, is the camera the same as in Sony? Jim Morrison says no. Allegedly, only the letter designation coincides, and the filling is completely different.
In general, you can see that the internal design of the iPhone 5S is simple and concise. There are far fewer vulnerable cables and connecting cables that are damaged by one careless movement.
We got to the wi-fi module. Marked as Murata 339S0205, the module is exactly the same on smartphones with different memory sizes. Sometimes, however, there are differences in several symbols, which probably means different manufacturing plants.
Examining the IC characteristics of the iPhone 5S with awe:
- Qualcomm PM8018 RF power management IC
- TriQuint TQM6M6224
- Apple 338S1216
- Skyworks 77355
- Avago A790720
- Avago A7900
- Apple 338S120L
- SK Hynix H2JTDG8UD3MBR 128 Gb (16 GB) NAND Flash
- Broadcom BCM5976 touchscreen controller
- Texas Instruments 343S0645 touchscreen interface
We continue to study the specifications of the iPhone 5S. On the inside of the logic board we read: Apple A7 APL0698 SoC, Qualcomm MDM9615M LTE Modem, Qualcomm WTR1605LLTE / HSPA / CDMA2K / TDSCDMA / EDGE / GPS transceiver. These long complex names only mean the processor labeling and the presence of the long-awaited motion processor.
It’s time to figure out another feature of the 5S model, the A7. Along with the fingerprint scanner, the A7 processor is one of the main differences between the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C. Apple says the A7 has twice the performance of the A6, so users who prioritize device power will choose the iPhone 5S instead of the 5C or the 5C.
Such an increase in performance is associated, firstly, with the 64-bit architecture, and secondly, with the replacement of the obsolete ARMv7 components with the ARMv8 set. ARMv8 was designed specifically for 64-bit architecture. Most importantly, it increases the performance of the gadget without hitting battery life. Since the technology has only recently appeared in mass products, we cannot yet tell in more detail what its internal structure is.
Now the next in line is the front camera, which we use for self-shots or for communication via video applications. After all that we have already done, removing it is quite an easy task, since nothing but a couple of screws holds it. We take our screwdriver and get down to business!
The bottom of the iPhone 5S has a lot in common with the iPhone 5. However, when you take the device apart, you will definitely notice that the speaker is much easier to remove. Together with it, the headset connector, microphone, lightining port are removed. Also easy and painless.
We are forced to resort to such a “prefabricated” extraction of a group of components at once, since they are interconnected, and do not represent separate modules.
Another hardware upgrade to the iPhone 5S is dual flash. Inside the camera, there are white and yellow LEDs to balance colors when shooting at night and keep users from taking Casper-style shots.
So, it’s time to summarize some of the iPhone 5S breakdown. Firstly, we made sure that, as in other branded devices, the screen is removed almost in the first place, which means that it can be replaced quite easily.
Secondly, if you are smart, it is quite possible to remove the battery. Although the company has made a lot of efforts to ensure that the average user is left with a nose (remember the glue and the missing label?). For the sake of fairness, we note that the new method of attaching the battery is much more reliable, despite the fact that at certain moments it causes some inconvenience. But Apple didn’t know that we were going to take apart the iPhone 5S. Therefore, we covered the battery firmly set on glue with all the same panels with tightly fitting screws.
Thirdly, the connecting cables are still vulnerable, so they should be treated with special care when disassembling. In particular, the cable leading to the fingerprint sensor, which is the main feature of the new iPhone, is almost instantly damaged.
In general, we can say that repairing the iPhone 5S is not the most difficult technical task, however, due to the design features of the device, namely the screen combined with a sensor and protective glass, it can be quite expensive. Everything is logical: not one part changes at the same time, but three, respectively, the cost of the kit increases.
Now that you have disassembled your iPhone 5S and figured out how it works with your own hands, you can put the device back together by following the steps in the instructions in the opposite sequence.
How to disassemble iPhone 5S
One Three F Three F again S! Four Four again! And one more S! Five! S! Five?! C!
Fortunately, Apple is in tech, not education. We can only imagine how confusing the ABCs would be if they studied in Cupertino.
Weird names aside, we were eager to bite into the newest phone fruit. So passionate that they sent one of us to the land where they walk on our heads to get one.
We also have special articles on replacing frequently-breaking iPhone components: replacing the iPhone 5S screen, replacing the iPhone 5S battery and replacing the home button.
New iPhone is a journey into the future. iFixit disassembly team moved 17 hours ahead of time to get their hands on the iPhone 5S early.
We want to say a big thank you to our good friends at MacFixit Australia for allowing their Melbourne office to be used for this review. They sell Mac / iPhone accessories and iFixit tools.
To close all our backs, we learned from our best linguists that 5S upside down is still 5S.
Talking about tools. For this analysis we will use our brand new Pro Tech Screwdriver Set.
While we prepare ourselves to dive into the wonderful internals of the iPhone 5S, let’s go over the technical specifications:
- Apple A7 processor with 64-bit architecture;
- Co-processor for motion analysis M7;
- 16, 32 or 64 GB Flash memory;
- 4-inch, 326 ppi retina display;
- 8MP iSight camera and 1.2MP FaceTime camera
- Fingerprint scanner built into the home button.
- Available in three colors: space gray, silver and zoooooloto (or, as we call it, not-space-color at all, a medal for second place, and Bling!).
Apple follows its tradition of shielding the user from the inside of the device using pentalobe screws. Luckily, we were ready for this. We’ve Released Our Reliable iPhone 5 Freeing Kit and Surprisingly, It Works!
Unfortunately, we did not purchase the paint we needed, so the kit contains only silver and black Philips Phillips screwdriver screws.
We are now pressing our designers to design Phillips screws in 585 gold. They will cost 50 each, and will turn on the first attempt to unscrew them, so they will be perfect for the iPhone. We will keep you informed.
Our released iPhone 5S reminded us of another iPhone with polka dots, a breakdown of which will be published in the near future
We finish spinning in place. It’s time to open the baby! Just like last year, we called for help from the suction cup to separate the display module assembly from the case.
Unlike last year, we gently run a spatula around the perimeter, just in case
The paddle helped. At the bottom of the phone, a ribbon was found connecting the Touch ID sensor located in the home button and the Lightening connector.
This adds a small element of danger to the parsing process. If you lift the screen too high by the suction cup, then there is a chance to damage the cable.
We survived the first trap and carefully detached the Touch ID ribbon connector using a spatula.
Alas, at first glance, the internal structure of the iPhone 5S does not differ much from the internal structure of the iPhone 5. The main difference is the absence of a tongue on the battery, for which it can be taken out of the case.
With the help of our favorite set of screwdrivers, we removed some of the metal shields that protect the connectors and embarked on an epic battle with the battery.
Seemingly insignificant, the lack of a tongue on the battery revealed a much larger problem. the glue.
Perhaps the letter es in the name means “stuck together” or “put up with” like, “this battery stuck tightly to the case” or “I hope you don’t want to replace the battery and put up with the fact that you have an old one.”.
While we dreamed of a battery in the iPhone that could be replaced without tools, we heated the existing battery and pried it with a spatula.
Holy Scotch! It seems that Apple in the previous “five”, compared to the iPhone 5S, did not use double-sided tape at all! There are two hefty white “runways” that hold the battery almost throughout its entire area.
Addition: some guys report that this tape has good tear-off. As soon as we receive more iPhones for repair we will check this theory and inform you!
The iPhone 5S is said to have up to 10 hours of talk time on 3G, but there are rumors that iOS 7 won’t leave a chance.
The gold battery by Desay Battery Co., Ltd, made in China in the city of Huizhou, gives out 3.8V, 5.92Wh, 1560mAh. For comparison:
- iPhone 5: 3.8V, 1440mAh, 5.45Wh. Talk time up to 8 hours in 3G networks. Standby time up to 225 hours.
- Samsung Galaxy S4: 3.8V, 2600mAh, 9.88Wh. Talk time up to 7. Standby time up to 300 hours.
- Motorola Moto X: 3.8V, 2200 mAh, 8.4 Wh. 24 hours in “mixed mode”.
It looks like different phones come with different batteries. Our other space gray device was powered by a battery from Simplo Technology Inc. (on right).
After successfully extracting the battery, we move on to the next step on our journey into the bowels of the iPhone: removing the (permanent) 326 dpi retina display assembly.
iPhone 5S Take Apart Repair Guide
A few sweeps with the spatula to disconnect the ribbon cables from the FaceTime camera, sensor, and screen, and the display module is free.
Looking for display specifications? Not worth it! You can look at the technical characteristics of the display in the previous “five”. Despite the trend followed by other smartphone manufacturers, the screen in the iPhone 5S is no bigger, no better, no worse than the screen in the top five.
We quickly removed the home button and Touch ID sensor, Apple’s new fingerprint scanner. Time to knock out fingerprints!
CMOS chip, obviously the Touch ID is a set of small capacitors that create an “image” of irregularities on the surface of your finger.
The technology is developed by AuthenTec and was acquired by Apple about a year ago. Fingerprints are reportedly stored locally on the device, which means they won’t be seen in Cupertino.
We’re worried about whether the sapphire crystal will protect the sensor from degradation over time, which is common with many CMOS fingerprint sensors. If not, it could become a ticking bomb, just like a super-glued battery.
Opening the iSight camera. DNL333 41WGRF 4W61W printed on the back of the camera.
According to our friend Jim Morrison, VP of Technology Analysis Group at Chipworks, “The DNL markings match the markings on the Sony IMX145 cameras that we saw on the iPhone 4s and iPhone 5. The markings on the ends are different, but our insiders say it’s a camera again. manufactured by Sony “.
Apple has stated that the pixel spacing on the sensor is 1.5 microns. Thus, this is not an IMX145, but some kind of new version. The bottom of the camera module is marked AW32 65BD 4511 b763.
For those of you who are counting steps and comparing everything to the previous model. while everything is the same.
A great example of Apple’s iterative design. The iPhone 5S has everything more combed and optimized.
Gone are the pathetic antenna adapter, reducing the number of elements that can disconnect or break.
If only they had decided to move the antenna connector from bottom to top
We found a Murata 339S0205 WI-FI module (based on the Broadcom BCM4334 chip, according to Chipworks).
- Murata IC seems to be the same for both iPhones.
- The design of the motherboard is identical, but small differences (for example, marking 94V-0 on the board on the right, absent on the board on the left) may indicate that Apple manufactures motherboards in different factories.
Removing electromagnetic screens! Behold the integrated circuits:
- SK Hynix H2JTDG8UD3MBR 128 Gb (16 GB) NAND Flash;
- Qualcomm PM8018 RF power management IC;
- TriQuint TQM6M6224;
- Apple 338S1216;
- Broadcom BCM5976 touchscreen controller;
- Texas Instruments 343S0645 touchscreen interface;
- Skyworks 77810.
- Skyworks 77355;
- Avago A790720;
- Avago A7900;
- Apple 338S120L.
Super-big thanks to the guys at Chipworks who helped to discover and identify these wonderful microcircuits.!
Let’s move our attention to the back side of the motherboard:
- Apple A7 APL0698 SoC (based on this MacRumors post, the markings F8164A1PD indicate the RAM is likely 1GB);
- Qualcomm MDM9615M LTE Modem;
- Qualcomm WTR1605L LTE / HSPA / CDMA2K / TDSCDMA / EDGE / GPS transceiver.
While trying to locate the expected M7 coprocessor, we started to wonder if it is in a separate package or is part of the A7.
Perhaps the “M” stands for “magical,” and Apple uses magic dust to keep the device working. Or maybe “M” means “marketing”
It’s time to check out the new kid on the block, and he’s as cool as the A7. In addition to the fingerprint sensor, the A7 is the main feature for which it is worth choosing the iPhone 5S over the iPhone 5C.
According to advertisements, the A7 is twice as fast as its predecessor, the A6, which was used in the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C.
The move to the A7 marks the first use of 64-bit processors in smartphones. Based on a report by AnandTech, the performance gains in the A7 do not come from the move to 64-bit architecture, but from the move from the legacy ARMv7 instruction set to the newly developed ARMv8.
The modern ARMv8 instruction set has been specifically designed for 64-bit architecture. It got rid of junk support, which increased efficiency, improved performance without affecting battery life.
We’ll have to wait while we examine the insides of the chip to find out who made it.
Several screws secure the 1.2MP FaceTime camera in place. Increasing the pixel size of an iSight camera may get a lot of attention, but DIY paparazzi is what makes iPhones what they are.
The bottom of the 5S looks almost the same as in the “five”, although the speaker assembly is easier to remove.
With the speaker removed, the module with headphone jack, microphone and Lightning connector can be easily removed.
On previous generations of the iPhone, many components had to be replaced at once. the design was not so modular.
Found another novelty: double flash.
The old and amber LEDs are located next to the camera to help combat the pale tones of nightlife photography.
Just like the iPhone 5, the display assembly comes off first, making it easier to replace.
The battery is also easy to access, although it is not “user serviceable”.
Fingerprint sensor cable can be easily torn if careless when removing the display.
iPhone 5s still uses Pentalobe head screws, requiring purchase of a dedicated screwdriver.
Protective glass, screen and sensor are one component, which increases the cost of repairs.
IPhone 5s Repair Ease: 6 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair).
The assembly is carried out upside-down. Thanks for attention 🙂
This article is not a guide to action! You are solely responsible for collecting and disassembling your device. Many manufacturers do not carry a warranty if the device has been disassembled by the user. If you do not want to void the warranty for your device, check the warranty conditions in the documentation or with the device manufacturer.

We disassemble for iPhone 5 / 5S repair
After several years of using an apple smartphone, people are starting to wonder: how to disassemble the iPhone 5? Someone will ask: why is this necessary? There are many reasons why iPhone fans do this. They can be listed almost indefinitely, but we will describe only three of them, because one way or another you are not here for this.
The first reason is to give your device a unique fresh look. The fact is that over time, the back panel on your iPhone can get pretty worn out. And if you have a black version of the iPhone 5, then paint problems will definitely make you do it.
iPhone 5S Teardown. Step by step complete disassembly directions
The second reason is a scratched protective glass that prevents the sensor from working properly. The third reason is hardware problems. Poor battery condition, faulty Home and Power keys, or a broken screen.
All these problems make us think about whether to carry the iPhone to a service center or disassemble the device ourselves. A trip to the service center can hit your wallet. After all, you will have to pay for the materials and work of the master. Disassembling yourself is not as difficult as it seems, and besides, you can save a lot on it. In this article, you will learn how to disassemble iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s by yourself.
First, turn off the device. You start the same way as in the case of the iPhone 4 / 4s: unscrew the 2 screws at the bottom of the iPhone 5. For the iPhone 5s, the disassembly procedure begins in the same way.
We take the suction cup and, with its help, raise the screen. Further, we move aside the structure with the screen, but not completely. Only the part where the Home button is located. For iPhone 5s, you will need to disconnect the ribbon cables that lead to the motherboard from the Touch ID sensor. The top remains connected to the rest of the smartphone with a small ribbon cable.
Putting the screen unit vertically, unscrew the screw that holds the cable mount. Disconnect the cable with a plastic spatula. The screen unit is now detached from the case. If there were malfunctions with the Home button or the reason for the disassembly was a faulty speaker, screen sensor, broken glass, then we continue to disassemble the screen unit.
To replace the speaker, you will need to unscrew 2 screws and disconnect the contacts from the screen block. The speaker is now ready to be replaced. We remove the Home button from the bracket, and replace it if it was faulty. In order to replace the glass or screen, unscrew the screw on the metal base. After that, nothing prevents you from replacing the screen or broken glass.
In order to replace the Home button in the iPhone 5s, aka Touch ID, you need to pry it with a rubber spatula and carefully remove it.
If the problem was in the battery, the board, or you want to change the color of the case, then we continue the process of disassembling the iPhone 5. To replace the battery, you need to disconnect the ribbon cable from the board with a plastic spatula. Next, use the same spatula to pry on the battery and pull on the plastic tab (on iPhone 5s, Apple abandoned this tab). We remove the battery and replace it.
The battery in the iPhone 5s can be dismantled as soon as the Touch ID cable and the cable connecting the battery to the motherboard were disconnected, without completely removing the screen unit.
Next, we proceed to dismantle the motherboard. At the same time, there is no significant difference between the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s. To do this, you need to disconnect the antenna connector module from the motherboard, which is located below. The next step is to unscrew the screw that secures the board to the case. Then, at the top of the smartphone, we find the screws that attach the contacts to the inner wall of the iPhone 5. Unscrew them. The motherboard is completely free, it can be removed.
If necessary, you can detach the camera by unscrewing the 2 screws. If it was damaged or defective, repair or replace.
Next, we continue to dismantle the bottom module, which includes the headphone jack, earpiece speaker, bottom microphone, Wi-Fi antenna and Lightning connector. This is not difficult to do, but it will take some effort, since the whole structure is fixed with glue. You can also unplug the Lightning connector if it is malfunctioning and have it replaced.
And now you have completely disassembled the iPhone 5. If you need to replace the old case with a new one, only of a different color, or change some faulty parts, now it is quite easy to do it. For the best smartphone performance, we recommend that you clean everything with a brush from accumulated dirt and dust. This is especially true for small gaps between keys or holes in the bottom of the device.
