On practice

To consider the practical heat dissipation of processors, the researchers looked at several popular models with different processors, both with a discrete video card (which takes part of the processor load) and with an integrated video core.

So, for a laptop Acer TravelMate P238-M-5575 with a common dual-core Intel Core i5-6200U processor and an integrated video core, the usual operating temperature was about 35-40 degrees. In this range, heating can be noticeable, but it does not harm either the device or the person. Using the test utility HW Monitor, we managed to raise the processor load to a level at which the temperature for the complex from both cores was 79 ° C. This is far from the critical temperature of the processor itself (it is about 100 ° C), but the user may seem, to put it mildly, elevated. Another thing is that a person will not feel this temperature, since the cooling system in a laptop does its job.

Another model. Asus F555UB-XO043T. is based on the same processor and also does not have a discrete graphics card. The result turned out to be a little predictable: the released temperature also remained within 80 ° C and could not somehow come close to the risky values. The user, of course, should not keep a laptop operating in this mode on his lap, but if the device is on the table (and even more so on a special cooling pad), there should be no harm from this.

Of greater interest to us is testing the notebook Gigabyte P55K v5, which belongs to the class of gaming machines and offers the maximum filling. In our case, this is an almost uncompromising Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor (the HQ index means four cores, but the overclocking option is disabled) plus an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M graphics card. This is a much more powerful kit: although the card reduces the load on the processor itself, it contributes to the overall heating. Therefore, the laptop has a more advanced cooling system.

Here, tests show the numbers from which breath can stop. When running our familiar HW Monitor, one of the processor cores warmed up to a critically close 99 ° C, the rest, however, did not lag too far behind. Graphics card temperature reached 81 ° C.

Dangerously? Yes. But this is an artificially achieved load. In fact, the normal temperature of the laptop processor, even when running very heavy games, barely reached 80 ° C. And given that the generated heat is immediately dissipated and removed, the laptop is ready for short-term extreme loads.

Finally, let’s dilute the Intel monopoly with a laptop powered by an AMD FX-8800P processor. This is the Acer Aspire E5-552G, which also has an AMD Radeon R8 M365DX graphics card on board. It is curious that the integration of a system from one manufacturer allows using the integrated and discrete video card both alternately and simultaneously, in CrossFire mode. This means the maximum use of all computational elements, which means maximum heat dissipation.

Recall that for AMD FX-8800P, the critical temperature threshold is lower than for Intel designs, and is only 90 ° C. For the user, this means that the developers have reduced heat transfer, and the case will not be such a fire-breathing “stove” even under high load.

The results were very encouraging. Even with the highest voltage provided by the Prime95 utility, the CPU temperature rose to only 54 ° C. The main “stove” (in contrast to the previous examples) suddenly turned out to be a discrete video card, which sold out to as much as 74 ° C. However, this result is far from critical values.

Practical conclusions

In practice, for users, this experiment can generate a whole set of interesting conclusions:

  • If you know what the temperature of the processor on a laptop should be in theory, then values ​​that seem critical may turn out to be quite acceptable. The numbers may look dangerous, but they should be compared to the limit values ​​from the processor specifications.
  • Notebook designers expect notebook processors to operate reliably within the target values ​​of the processor manufacturers.

The Acer TravelMate P238-M-5575 has a modern 7th generation Intel Core i5-6200U processor. This microcircuit is made using 14 nm lithography norms on the Skylake architecture. The maximum critical temperature of this CPU is 100 degrees.

The next model Asus F555UB-XO043T is based on a similar Intel Core i5-6200U CPU. Let’s run a similar stress test using the Prime95 utility. During the stress test, the following sensor readings were obtained in the HWMonitor program.

Also readings were taken from the graphics core.

From the data obtained, the processor temperature was 75-79 degrees, which is almost the same as the result of the Acer TravelMate P238-M-5575 model and corresponds to the normal temperature parameters of the CPU in question.

The next laptop Gigabyte P55K v5 is a gaming laptop, therefore, in addition to a powerful processor, it has a modern video card in its bundle. The Gigabyte P55K v5 has an Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M graphics card. If you compare this model with previous models, you will notice the difference that lies in the cooling system (hereinafter referred to as CO). In the model under consideration, the CO must cope with cooling both the video card and the CPU, and not only the processor, as in the previous models. The image below shows the CO Gigabyte P55K v5.

The Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor has a critical heating level of 100 degrees. As in the previous examples, let’s run a stress test on Gigabyte P55K v5 using the Prime95 utility. During the test, we measured such indicators in the HWiNFO utility.

And also made measurements in the video card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M.

As a result of the test, the CPU warmed up to a temperature of 97 degrees, and the video card to 81 degrees. This heating result is quite high, but still fits within 100 degrees.

For the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M video card, a result of 81 degrees is a fairly normal indicator, since its critical figure is 100 degrees. Of course, warming up the processor to 97 degrees is too big, but this is all the merit of Prime95, which squeezes out almost all the juices from the CPU.

Now it’s time to consider what the temperature readings of the Acer Aspire E5-552G laptop with components from AMD. The heart of the computer is the AMD FX-8800P CPU. The installed graphics card is named AMD Radeon R8 M365DX. An interesting feature of this system is that the AMD FX-8800P has a built-in graphics core that can work in Crossfire mode together with the AMD Radeon R8 M365DX. That is, thanks to such a bundle, the user will receive twice the graphics performance. The AMD FX-8800P processor has a critical temperature rating of 90 degrees at which it will function normally. After warming up the Acer Aspire E5-552G with the Prime95 utility, we got the following heating results.

The CPU heating results were 54 degrees, which is a normal result for the AMD FX-8800P, since it fits within the 90 degree mark. The result of measuring the video card AMD Radeon R8 M365DX was 74 degrees, which is also a normal result.

From all the examples considered, it becomes clear that the normal temperature of the processor depends on the cooling system.
