If you need to connect a second monitor to a computer, but it is not available, then there is the option of using a laptop as a display for a PC. This process is carried out with the introduction of only one cable and a small setting of the operating system, but there is one very important remark. Let’s take a closer look at this.
Now most laptops are equipped with an HDMI-out connector, and it only allows you to display an image, not perceive it. After that, only models with HDMI-in are suitable for connection, which are very few on the market. To determine this information, refer to the laptop manual or to the manufacturer’s official website. If the information in HDMI-in is not indicated anywhere, then the model is equipped with the first connector option, and not suitable for our purpose.

- Turn on PC and laptop.
- On the PC, enter the “Control Panel”, open the “Display” menu, go to the settings.
In Windows 10, to get into the display settings, go to Windows Settings, to the System section. Or even SIMpler. right-click on an empty space on the desktop, the “Display Settings” tab.
- In the drop-down menu “Multiple screens” select “Extend the desktop” (or duplicate, create a new table. it all depends on the needs of the user).
- On a laptop, also go to the “Screen” settings and select “Show Desktop 1” (or “PC Monitor”. the parameter may be called this way, depending on the brand). After that, the display will show the image from the PC.
- In most modern laptops, switching between operating modes of the integrated display can be performed using hotkey combinations. The most common combinations are FnF4 and FnF8. You can clarify in the technical documentation or on the label on the keyboard itself.
If in the settings of the “Screen” item “Extend the desktop” or “Duplicate desktop” is available, then either the graphics adapter itself or the driver does not support this function. It is possible that the cable is defective and does NOT transmit a signal.

4) resolution. in Fig. 10 shows that Windows 10 offers to set the default resolution, which is most often the best for an external monitor,
5) orientation. as a rule, landscape orientation is set (with the long part horizontally), although in some cases, portrait orientation (with the short part horizontally) will be useful,
6) SIMultaneous operation of multiple displays (see below).

Number 2 in Fig. 11 shows this option. It means that the continuation (to the right) of the desktop of the main laptop monitor will appear on the second (external) monitor. The desktop will become wider, as it were. It will be possible to open more windows on it so that they do NOT overlap each other.
It works this way. You open a new program, a new window. This program, this window opens on the main monitor, I close the other windows open there. Then you SIMply drag the opened exercise window with the mouse, not paying attention to the fact that the window will seem to go beyond the limits of the main screen to the right. This window will SIMultaneously appear on the second external monitor, where you can fix it, and work with this window on the second, on the external monitor.
It is so convenient, for example, for one PC (laptop) user to work on it, and for the second, say, to watchs on YouTube or television programs broadcast over the Internet. Also, programmers in their work often use two monitors in this mode: on one they write and edit the code (program), and on the second they immediately see the results of their efforts. This is clearly shown in the very first figure in this article.
Next comes the setting of the desktop background. The image set as the desktop wallpaper will be the same on both screens even if the display is expanded, that is, it will NOT be stretched, but duplicated.
To extend the image to both screens, you need to go to the personalization settings and select “Expand” in the choice of image placement. This completes the basic setup.
I have listed the cons, but the pros, such as comfort at work, cannot be expressed in words.
If possible, it is better to use monitors with the same diagonal and the same resolution. Thanks to this, the picture will be displayed better, and the setting will be easier, since you DO NOT have to “play” with the resolution.

Next, I publish the opinion of a computer user based on my own practice.
It so happened that I am the owner of a 20-inch monitor and a 40-inch TV. I work behind a small monitor, write articles and surf the Internet. A large monitor was previously used for a console, and after that it became not in demand at all. After that, I thought: “Why not get your own multi-monitor system?” This idea turned out to be not only interesting, but also quite SIMple to implement. It was enough to connect the TV to the card via HDMI cable, and the image was immediately displayed on both screens.
4 Show only on the second screen
The option (shown as 4 in Fig. 11) also speaks for itself. The image will be visible only on the second external monitor, and the main monitor will be turned off, as it were.
This option is used if the laptop is used in the system unit mode, when all work is carried out only from a large external monitor, and not on a small laptop screen.
True, in this case, you will also have to connect an external keyboard and an external mouse to the laptop, that is, completely transform the laptop, which already has all the built-in devices, into a system unit to which you need to connect external devices.
Also, this option is used by someone who, for one reason or another, does not work with the main monitor, but there is an opportunity to repair a laptop, or it just makes no sense because of its obsolescence. In this case, the use of an external monitor can prolong the life of such a laptop for a long time.
For a stationary PC, this option allows you to display the image only on the second additional monitor, if it is needed for one reason or another, which cannot be remembered right away. Most often, after all, on a stationary PC, they use the three previous options.

Setting up the screen on two monitors
But I decided NOT to stop there. Next came the setting. Here the first problem also surfaced. Since the resolutions and diagonals in the screens are different, it will NOT work to fully combine them. So I had to adjust to the limitations.
In the display settings in Windows 10, you can select the main monitor. It is desirable for them to make the monitor on the left (fig. 9). Where the displays will be indicated, you need to drag the first one with the mouse so that it is to the left of the second. The convenience of such an arrangement shows itself when dragging elements and windows from one screen to another.
The downside of using two monitors was that desktops, like taskbars, are not independent from each other. it’s just a very large desktop that allows you to work on one screen, and enable YouTube or something else on the other.
My next steps were to try to set the screen resolution to the optimal proportional one. In my case, it was NOT successful, as the resolutions and aspect ratios of the screens were very different. It was decided to leave the screen resolution as it was.
Then I moved on to the screen display options. There were only four of them:
- Display only on the first and
- Display only on the second.
I chose the second option. expanding the screens, thus combining the two screens into one. But if necessary, you can switch the display mode at any time through the settings panel (the “Display” tab), so you can safely experiment with this function.
