How To Use A Laptop As A Monitor Via HDMI

If you need to connect a second monitor to a computer, but it is not available, then there is the option of using a laptop as a display for a PC. This process is carried out with the introduction of only one cable and a small setting of the operating system, but there is one very important remark. Let’s take a closer look at this.

Now most laptops are equipped with an HDMI-out connector, and it only allows you to display an image, not perceive it. After that, only models with HDMI-in are suitable for connection, which are very few on the market. To determine this information, refer to the laptop manual or to the manufacturer’s official website. If the information in HDMI-in is not indicated anywhere, then the model is equipped with the first connector option, and not suitable for our purpose.

Connect laptop to computer via HDMI

To complete this process, you need a working system unit, an HDMI cable and a laptop with an HDMI-in connector. All settings will be done on the PC. The user only needs to perform a few SIMple steps:

    Take an HDMI cable, plug one side into the corresponding HDM-in connector on the laptop.

Now you should start the laptop. If the image is NOT automatically transferred, press Fn F4 (on some laptop models, the switch between monitors can be changed). If there is no picture, adjust the screens on the computer.

Select the “Display” option.

Go to the “Configuring display settings” section.

If the screen was not found, click the “Find” button.

You can now use your laptop as a second monitor for your computer.

Alternative connection option

There are special programs that allow you to remotely control your computer. Using them, you can connect your laptop to your computer via the Internet without using additional cables. One of the most popular programs is TeamViewer. After installation, you only need to create an account and connect. Read more about this in our article at the link below.

In addition, there are many more programs for remote access on the Internet. We offer you to get acquainted with the full list of representatives of this software in the articles on the links below.

In this article, we examined the process of connecting a laptop to a computer using an HDMI cable. As you can see, there is nothing difficult about this, if the laptop is equipped with HDMI-in, the connection and adjustment does not take long, and you can immediately start working. If the signal quality does not suit you or, for some reason, the connection cannot be made due to the lack of the required port, we suggest considering an alternative option in more detail.

If the laptop has HDMI?

If the laptop has an HDMI port, then the only output is the use of special signal converters from HDMI to VGA or DVI.

But in practice, if a discrete adapter is used, then most likely the output of a third-party image to the built-in display will be blocked (since in such laptops there are 2 cards that switch among themselves depending on the load on the graphics subsystem).

This limitation is absent only in laptops produced from about 2012. 2013.

How to connect?

It is recommended to adhere to the following aLGorithm (for example, Windows 7):

  • Turn off PC and laptop.
  • Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the laptop, the other to the HDMI output on the adapter (not to the monitor).
  • Turn on PC and laptop.
  • On the PC, enter the “Control Panel”, open the “Display” menu, go to the settings.

In Windows 10, to get into the display settings, go to Windows Settings, to the System section. Or even SIMpler. right-click on an empty space on the desktop, the “Display Settings” tab.

  • In the drop-down menu “Multiple screens” select “Extend the desktop” (or duplicate, create a new table. it all depends on the needs of the user).
  • On a laptop, also go to the “Screen” settings and select “Show Desktop 1” (or “PC Monitor”. the parameter may be called this way, depending on the brand). After that, the display will show the image from the PC.
  • In most modern laptops, switching between operating modes of the integrated display can be performed using hotkey combinations. The most common combinations are FnF4 and FnF8. You can clarify in the technical documentation or on the label on the keyboard itself.

If in the settings of the “Screen” item “Extend the desktop” or “Duplicate desktop” is available, then either the graphics adapter itself or the driver does not support this function. It is possible that the cable is defective and does NOT transmit a signal.

How to set up multiple displays in Windows is covered in the following:

SIMilar settings for image output can be set using proprietary graphics accelerator software (NVidia, AMD, Intel, SiS). over, in many cases there are more functions. For example, in software from NVidia You can not only configure the output of an image to a third-party display, but also at the same time adjust its brightness, contrast, or even turn on “portrait orientation” Displayed images.

After connecting the laptop to the PC via HDMI, the sound is automatically transmitted along with the signal, and the audio card built into the PC is turned off. You can change this parameter in the “Control Panel”, in the “Sound” tab (by choosing the built-in audio codec instead of HDMI). Otherwise, the sound will not be output to the headphones or PC speaker.

Likewise, you can use your PC monitor as an additional or external display for your laptop. But in this situation, it will be easier to SIMply connect the monitor directly, bypassing the graphics accelerator of the personal computer.

Technical information

HDMI is a digital I / O port that supports bi-directional communication. Its operation is controlled by the adapter driver. Accordingly, the first step is to update the software to the latest current version (to support the latest version of the port specification).

Some Ultrabooks that have a physical HDMI port will not be able to output images from another PC. This is explained by the technical limitations of the used chipset and its strapping on the motherboard.

One more nuance: you should connect with the equipment turned off (both notebook and PC). When you try to connect them “hot” there is a considerable probability of failure of the graphics accelerator (or chipset, if integrated graphics is used). Only after disconnecting the device can you connect and configure.

We wrote about the features of HDMI connection on laptops here.

How to output an image to a laptop via HDMI in 5 minutes

A laptop is a portable PC. But the principle of its technical structure is SIMilar. This means that its display can be used as a second monitor for a PC.

But how can this be done? How to connect a laptop to a computer as a monitor via HDMI and are there any other options for how you can display an image from a PC on a laptop display?

What other options are there for displaying images?

It is possible to display an image from a PC to a laptop display not only through a cable, but also wirelessly. But only if each device has a compatible Wi-Fi adapter supporting the WiDi or MIRACAST function.

READ  How To Connect A Wired Mouse To A Laptop

Wireless Display fully works only in Windows 10, while in Windows 7 Official support is available, as in Windows 8.

For details on how it works and how to use MIRACAST, read here.

Alternatively, you can consider programs such as TeamViewer, AirDisplay (There are not only Windows, but also Mac OS) Radmin. They also allow you to transfer images via Wi-Fi (even if there is no WiDi support, the image quality will be low), but if there is a network connection (via a router or switch).

In total, if you have an HDMI cable, the laptop display can be used as an additional or duplicate monitor. And it works regardless of the version of the built-in HDMI port specification. In the absence of HDMI, you can use either wireless image output (WiDi) or a dedicated HDMI to VGA or DVI converter.

Connect your console to your TV

Even a child can cope with this task. To connect a game console, it is enough to connect HDMI to the TV itself and the game console. After that, you need to turn on the console and go to the TV settings, where you just need to select the AV mode. The game console will automatically connect to the TV and start broadcasting the image. You can also connect the console to the World Wide Web.

How to connect PS4 to laptop via HDMI? PC and TV connection options

Game consoles have become part of the life of gamers. Like many years ago, console fans fall into two camps. The former play for the Xbox, while the others believe that nothing can be better than the PlayStation. Nevertheless, fans of “curling iron” are still the overwhelming majority.

However, despite such popularity, this console often throws its owners into a stupor. Most often, gamers are wondering how to connect a PS4 to a laptop via HDMI. This is not surprising, because today most computers, laptops and TVs are equipped with a SIMilar connector. However, not everything is as SIMple as it seems. First, pay attention to a few points.

PlayStation 4 connection

In order to connect a game console to a computer monitor or laptop, it is enough to purchase two inexpensive adapters: for and audio. Next, you need to do the following:

  • Insert HDMI to USB adapter and plug into the corresponding output on the laptop.
  • Reset game console settings. To do this, you must press the on / off button on the console and wait until It emits the Corresponding sound, indicating its shutdown.
  • Connect the white and red tulip wires to the audio jack on the speakers. For this, an av-jack adapter is used.

This is the most common way to connect your PS4 via HDMI to a laptop or desktop computer. You will also need to switch the audio mode on the set-top box itself. To do this, go to the console settings and select the symbol that shows the tulip wires. If you cannot connect your PS4 to a laptop via HDMI in this way, then the easiest way is to use a TV for a game console.

Can PS4 connect to laptop via HDMI?

The game console actually provides this connector, as well as the PC itself. There is only one important nuance. There are HDMI IN and HDMI OUT. Standard consoles and laptops have connectors that work “out”. Accordingly, it is impossible to connect in this case.

However, this does not mean that the question of how to connect PS4 to laptop via HDMI is closed. Laptop computers designed for games and equipped with a powerful processor and game card are often equipped with the required connector, so in this case the connection is very SIMple: you just need to connect the console and select the Corresponding mode on it.

Nevertheless, the cost of such PCs is very high, so it is worth considering how to connect a PS4 to a laptop via HDMI with the introduction of an additional adapter.

Connect PS4 to the Internet

To make such a connection, you need to connect a network cable to the console and follow these steps:

  • Go to the settings of the game console and find there the options responsible for the network settings.
  • Click on “Configure Internet Connection”.
  • Select the mode of using the network cable.
  • Click on “SIMple connection type”. In this case, the game console will independently determine the necessary network parameters and automatically connect.

If the TV works via a wireless connection, then in the Internet settings, select the available Wi-Fi connections from the proposed ones. After that, it will be enough to enter the password to connect to the Internet and start using the set-top box in real time. However, it should be borne in mind that with a wired connection, the game console will work much more productively, more stable and faster. This is especially true if a gambler downloads “heavy” games, which can take several hours to load. It is very important that the network connection is NOT broken. Under the condition of a wireless connection, one-second failures often occur, which are enough for the downloaded game to not start.

The article covered ways on how to connect PS4 to laptop via HDMI. If the set-top box cannot be connected to the PC, then the easiest way is to use a TV equipped with a corresponding output.

How to connect a laptop to a second laptop with HDMI

Connecting your laptop to your laptop via HDMI is pretty SIMple. To do this, you need to insert the cables into the jacks, and. And then nothing. The fact is that HDMI in laptops only works for output. That is, it can transmit data, but cannot receive it.

HDMI in laptops is designed to output images and sound to an external output device such as a TV. Thus, it turns out that connecting two laptops with an HDMI cable is pointless.

We connect via LAN ports

Another option is to connect the laptop to the laptop via LAN ports. This requires a cable with the appropriate I / O. To create a LAN connection you will need:

  • Connect the cable to two laptops;
  • Click on “WINR” and enter “ncpa.Cpl”;
  • In the window that opens, they will right-click on “Local Area Connection”;
  • Select “Properties”;
  • In the window that appears, you will need to be named twice for “Internet Protocol version 4”;
  • In the displayed window, enter: “IP-address”:, “Mask”:

On the second computer, you will need to repeat these steps, only specified other data: “IP-address”:, “Mask”: After that, two computers will be united into one network, and they will be able to freely exchange information.

Connect laptops via Bluetooth

We use Wi-Fi

The easiest way to connect two laptops is to connect them to a private Wi-Fi network. For example, in Widows 7, this is very easy. For this you need:

  • Go to “Control Panel”. “Networks and Internet”. “Network and Sharing Center”;
  • Select “Manage wireless networks”;
  • Click on “Add”;
  • Select “Create a computer-to-computer network”;
  • Click “Next”, enter the name of the access point, specify the encryption method and come up with a password;
  • After that click “Next”. “Finish”.

The created network will allow you to transfer files from laptop to laptop, use the shared Internet (if shared access is enabled), etc.

How can laptops be connected to each other

But, however, why bother to use HDMI technology to exchange data between laptops, if modern devices have several other protocols, which are specifically designed for these purposes.

How to connect laptop to laptop via HDMI

There are many ways of transferring information from computer to computer, and the use of each of them is determined by the conditions and capabilities of the person who needs to transport the data. In particular, laptops have two protocols specifically for the respective purposes: LAN and WLAN. Also modern machines have an HDMI port. But can it be used to exchange information between devices, and if so, how to connect a laptop to a laptop via HDMI, more on that later.

Shutdown. I turn off both devices so as NOT to burn the ports. Connect your computer (laptop) to the TV using an HDMI cable. Plug one end of the cord into the HDMI out of your computer and the other end of the cord into the HDMI in of your TV. To avoid degrading the picture and sound quality, do not connect the DVI output (via an adapter) of your computer to the TV HDMI input, and vice versa. The connectors must be the same.

Loading. The cable is inserted. Turn on your TV and computer. The computer will boot into Windows. It will become clear that the TV is connected to an external source by a slight blinking of the screen. Do not forget to put the TV in AVI mode, it receives signals from an external source (connected computer), and not from an antenna. In AVI source mode, select Corresponding HDMI input of TV.

Customization. To connect your laptop or computer to the TV, adjust the picture. On the computer desktop, right-click the context menu.

In Windows XP, select Properties, click the Options button. Click the “Advanced” button, select the appropriate value. The TV screen displays your computer desktop.

With Windows 7 and Windows 8 installed on your computer, right-click on an empty space, select “Screen Resolution”. Find the term “Screen” and choose the appropriate option. The connected TV was NOT automatically detected? In the same window, click the “Find” button.

Wait for the TV search to finish. Set the maximum screen resolution by selecting in the “Monitor” tab and “frequent screen refresh”.

At the top in the “Screen Settings” we determine which screen we have the main (1st) and additional (2nd).

You must click “define”. You will see the number “1” on the TV screen, and the number “2” on the computer / laptop screen. To correct the situation, in the “Screen Resolution” window, click on the screen “2”. Check the box “Make the main monitor” and press the “ok” button.

If necessary, in the properties of the map, adjust the resolution of the desktop size, color correction.

Reboot. Restart your computer. Changes to settings will happen automatically.

How to connect a second monitor in Windows 10

Sometimes users are faced with the question of how to connect a second Windows 10 monitor for a stationary computer or an external, also a second monitor for a laptop. This is required for various purposes, for example, for showing slides to the “general public” or for extending the computer desktop to be able to work with a large number of SIMultaneously open windows.

Connecting an external monitor to a laptop or computer in Windows 8, Win 7 and Win XP can be found HERE,

Let’s consider how to connect a second monitor in Windows 10. But first, an external monitor (for a laptop) or a second monitor (for a computer) must be connected, physically connected to a computer or laptop, and only then set up its operation.

For this, the computer usually has a second port for connecting a monitor. But laptops now usually have a VGA port so that you can immediately connect a monitor to it.

In modern laptops, the HDMI port is more often used, but not all external monitors can be directly connected to it. Therefore, first let’s see how you can connect an external monitor to a laptop, and only then return to the question of how to set up an external (second monitor).

Setting up a second external monitor connection in Windows 10

That’s it, now the external monitor and audio speakers are connected to the laptop. You can turn on your laptop, turn on an external monitor, turn on speakers. Now let’s get down to the settings.

After Windows boots up, nothing will change on the laptop screen, the external monitor will be blank, or there will be a glimpse of the inscription on it that It is not connected, that there is no signal, the speakers will be silent. This is because we have NOT configured anything yet.

Let’s move on to setting up. To do this, on a free space on the Windows 10 desktop Right-click to bring up a menu. In this menu we select the option “Screen Options” (Fig. 8).

The display setup window opens. To set up an external monitor, you need to switch to the second monitor, the monitor with number 2, as shown in Fig. nine.

After choosing this particular monitor, the picture of the monitor with the number 2 will turn blue, and the picture of the main monitor with the number 1 inside will become gray. This means that everything below the monitor setting options are now assigned to the second, external monitor.

Let’s consider what settings can be set for the second monitor:

In the settings of the external (second) monitor (Fig. 10) you can set:

1) brightness. by moving the lever to the left (weaker) or right (brighter),

2) night light. by on / off switch,

3) scale. in Fig. 10 shows that the scale is 100% (recommended), but it can be increased to make the image larger,

4) resolution. in Fig. 10 shows that Windows 10 offers to set the default resolution, which is most often the best for an external monitor,

5) orientation. as a rule, landscape orientation is set (with the long part horizontally), although in some cases, portrait orientation (with the short part horizontally) will be useful,

6) SIMultaneous operation of multiple displays (see below).

2 Extend these screens

Number 2 in Fig. 11 shows this option. It means that the continuation (to the right) of the desktop of the main laptop monitor will appear on the second (external) monitor. The desktop will become wider, as it were. It will be possible to open more windows on it so that they do NOT overlap each other.

It works this way. You open a new program, a new window. This program, this window opens on the main monitor, I close the other windows open there. Then you SIMply drag the opened exercise window with the mouse, not paying attention to the fact that the window will seem to go beyond the limits of the main screen to the right. This window will SIMultaneously appear on the second external monitor, where you can fix it, and work with this window on the second, on the external monitor.

It is so convenient, for example, for one PC (laptop) user to work on it, and for the second, say, to watchs on YouTube or television programs broadcast over the Internet. Also, programmers in their work often use two monitors in this mode: on one they write and edit the code (program), and on the second they immediately see the results of their efforts. This is clearly shown in the very first figure in this article.

Desktop background

Next comes the setting of the desktop background. The image set as the desktop wallpaper will be the same on both screens even if the display is expanded, that is, it will NOT be stretched, but duplicated.

To extend the image to both screens, you need to go to the personalization settings and select “Expand” in the choice of image placement. This completes the basic setup.

I have listed the cons, but the pros, such as comfort at work, cannot be expressed in words.

If possible, it is better to use monitors with the same diagonal and the same resolution. Thanks to this, the picture will be displayed better, and the setting will be easier, since you DO NOT have to “play” with the resolution.

Try it and enjoy your work or entertainment process.

Filling in the Gaps. Expanding the Horizons! How to connect a second Windows 10 monitor: personal experience

Next, I publish the opinion of a computer user based on my own practice.

It so happened that I am the owner of a 20-inch monitor and a 40-inch TV. I work behind a small monitor, write articles and surf the Internet. A large monitor was previously used for a console, and after that it became not in demand at all. After that, I thought: “Why not get your own multi-monitor system?” This idea turned out to be not only interesting, but also quite SIMple to implement. It was enough to connect the TV to the card via HDMI cable, and the image was immediately displayed on both screens.

4 Show only on the second screen

The option (shown as 4 in Fig. 11) also speaks for itself. The image will be visible only on the second external monitor, and the main monitor will be turned off, as it were.

This option is used if the laptop is used in the system unit mode, when all work is carried out only from a large external monitor, and not on a small laptop screen.

True, in this case, you will also have to connect an external keyboard and an external mouse to the laptop, that is, completely transform the laptop, which already has all the built-in devices, into a system unit to which you need to connect external devices.

Also, this option is used by someone who, for one reason or another, does not work with the main monitor, but there is an opportunity to repair a laptop, or it just makes no sense because of its obsolescence. In this case, the use of an external monitor can prolong the life of such a laptop for a long time.

For a stationary PC, this option allows you to display the image only on the second additional monitor, if it is needed for one reason or another, which cannot be remembered right away. Most often, after all, on a stationary PC, they use the three previous options.

It should be noted that the hotkeys

Open the projection panel in Windows 10.

Setting up the screen on two monitors

But I decided NOT to stop there. Next came the setting. Here the first problem also surfaced. Since the resolutions and diagonals in the screens are different, it will NOT work to fully combine them. So I had to adjust to the limitations.

In the display settings in Windows 10, you can select the main monitor. It is desirable for them to make the monitor on the left (fig. 9). Where the displays will be indicated, you need to drag the first one with the mouse so that it is to the left of the second. The convenience of such an arrangement shows itself when dragging elements and windows from one screen to another.

The downside of using two monitors was that desktops, like taskbars, are not independent from each other. it’s just a very large desktop that allows you to work on one screen, and enable YouTube or something else on the other.

My next steps were to try to set the screen resolution to the optimal proportional one. In my case, it was NOT successful, as the resolutions and aspect ratios of the screens were very different. It was decided to leave the screen resolution as it was.

Then I moved on to the screen display options. There were only four of them:

  • Duplication,
  • Expansion,
  • Display only on the first and
  • Display only on the second.

I chose the second option. expanding the screens, thus combining the two screens into one. But if necessary, you can switch the display mode at any time through the settings panel (the “Display” tab), so you can safely experiment with this function. You can also use the keyboard shortcut by using the keyboard shortcut Windows and P (English).
