How to put RAM in a laptop

How to increase the RAM on a laptop in the settings. How to increase RAM in Asus laptop.

Those who, due to professional activity or personal motives, quite often work on a laptop, fully understand that the speed of execution of many programs fully depends on the size of the RAM. It is for this reason that many PC owners are actively interested in how to increase the RAM on a laptop.

Adding “RAM” to the laptop will not take much time, but it will save waiting for the download of programs.

The technical parameters of various laptops differ significantly, so it is absolutely impossible to navigate and purchase RAM, which was purchased by someone from your acquaintances. In this regard, the first rule arises, which the owner must have from Honor when he wants to increase RAM. It lies in the fact that it is important in advance to determine the type of already installed RAM module, its size, as well as the bus frequency.

How to add RAM to an Asus laptop?

Depending on the laptop model, the RAM is located in different places of the device. In some models, it is in a special compartment under the bottom panel, in others. under the keyboard or motherboard.

You will learn the fundamental features of installing and increasing the “RAM” by reading the article further.

Types and amounts of RAM in Asus laptops

  • Until 2004, Asus laptops used SO DIMM SDRAM operating at 100 or 133 MHz.
  • 2005-2008 models used SO DIMM DDR type with clock speeds of 266, 333 or 400 MHz.
  • 2006-2008 models have SO DIMM DDR2 memory, 533, 667 or 800 MHz.
  • Models from 2009 have SO DIMM DDR3 memory clocked at 800, 1066, 1333, or 1600 MHz. Some newer models have Micro DIMM DDR2.

Before purchasing additional RAM for your laptop, you must:

Determine what type of memory is already installed. Increasing the amount of RAM with boards of different types and characteristics is unacceptable.

The added memory, in all respects, must coincide with the existing one. If an outdated model is installed that is not commercially available, you must also replace the existing bar with a new, installed type. In this case, you should check whether the motherboard supports the installed type.

Each laptop model supports a certain amount of RAM, so you need to check the current specifications through the BIOS or, directly, in Windows in the “Computer Properties”. You can also go to the official Asus website and see the model’s specifications there. As a rule, the specification indicates the maximum amount of memory supported by the device.

Step-by-step instructions for increasing the amount of RAM in an Asus laptop

example with installed RAM in the compartment under the bottom panel

Unplug the laptop from the mains and the battery before installing additional memory.

Unscrew the screws on the back of the laptop and remove the cover.

For reference. Some models provide additional installation of memory sticks. In fig. 1 you can see a free slot. If additional slots are not provided, it is necessary to replace the existing memory strip with another, larger one.

Place the memory strip into the slot at an angle of 45 degrees, relative to the motherboard, and snap into place, Fig. 2

Further, all components are assembled in reverse order. After starting the operating system, the installed memory will be detected automatically.

example with installed RAM under the keyboard

To access the memory, you must carefully remove the keyboard. To this end, unscrew the screws or release the latches that fix it.

Then gently lift the keyboard. If it is inconvenient to work further, you can disconnect the ribbon cable from the motherboard and remove the keyboard completely.

On the plate covering the RAM, you need to unscrew the screws, lift and gently pull the memory bar out of the slot.

In the vacated slot, install another bar with a larger volume.

If the RAM is located under the motherboard

It is first necessary to remove the compartment with the drive. HDD or SSD disk, unscrew the motherboard and disconnect all connectors from it.

On the reverse side, under a protective film, there is a memory slot.

Lift the film and replace the memory stick in the above way.

Attention ! This article is not a guide, instruction, etc. Here’s how to do it, not how to do it. Any handling of technology requires experience and knowledge. Read, analyze, draw conclusions. And experimenting yourself or contacting specialists is your personal choice.

There are three types of RAM: DDR, DDR2, DDR3. The first DDRs are no longer relevant and today only DDR2 and DDR3 are used

Any laptop or computer can only support one of these types. They differ in frequency, speed of data exchange and a cutout on the strap in the area of the contacts, so that an unintended type of memory cannot be inserted into the slot. You can find out what type of DDR is supported by your laptop from those. passports, read the sticker on the memory module, which is already installed at the moment, or use one of the many programs that determine the technical characteristics of the computer. If you have any difficulties at this stage, then it is better to consult a specialist.

Remember that the amount of memory you can deliver also depends on the bitness of your processor. If you have a 32-bit processor and the corresponding operating system, then more than 3 GB of memory will not be used by the laptop. To avoid these restrictions, you need: 64-bit processor and 64-bit operating system.

To increase the amount of RAM, we need to install an additional module (purchased in advance) in a free slot. The question immediately arises: “Where to find this slot?” The memory slots are located on the laptop motherboard, usually on the bottom.
It happens that the slots are located on top (under the laptop keyboard). Let’s consider both options:

Option 1. Adding RAM if slots are on top.

Our guinea pig is the Asus A2500H laptop with DDR RAM. It has only 256 Mb of RAM and the memory slots are on the top. If you will perform such operations with a laptop yourself, make it a rule to first remove the battery.

Option 2. Adding RAM when the slots are at the bottom.

Now let’s look at an easier way to add RAM with the memory slots at the bottom. Take an Acer Aspire 5315 laptop with DDR II memory as an example. Here he is handsome:

Or here another example when located at the bottom.

Turn off the laptop and unplug the power supply.

This completes the installation. Close the compartment with the lid and screw back the screws. Insert the battery, connect the power and you can turn on the laptop.

To check the amount of RAM, right-click on the icon “My computer»And select properties. See the data of the item “Memory (RAM / RAM)“.

Of course, there are many different features in different laptop models. It so happens that both slots are free (there is built-in RAM) or vice versa: both slots are occupied by low-capacity modules. In rare cases, RAM may be located not below or under the keyboard, but, for example, to the left of the touchpad. There are laptop models where one slot is on the bottom, the other on top.
Such a laptop upgrade is not difficult to do, it does not affect the removal of the laptop from warranty service. But if you still have doubts or just do not want an extra hassle. contact the specialists.

The need to know how to increase the RAM on a laptop appears in cases where the RAM already installed on the device is not enough to run the necessary games or programs.

With desktop PCs, this situation happens much less often than with portable ones.

If only because most of the characteristics of desktop and laptop models with the same price differ markedly not in favor of the latter.

This is due to the desire of laptop manufacturers to place everything as compactly as possible. and usually this is enough for the average user who requires from a device, first of all, mobility, and not high performance.

It is easy to avoid such a problem. it is enough just to purchase such a laptop, the memory of which will not have to be increased for another 3-4 years.

For example, such as MSI brand gaming models with 16-32 GB of memory.

True, their price will be no less than 100-150 thousand rubles, which is unlikely to suit an ordinary user who would prefer to increase the RAM of an existing computer better.

The first sign that it is time to change the memory is the messages that appear about the lack of RAM or completely non-starting games and useful programs.

This is especially noticeable if the laptop model is not the same and old, but applications are still needed, for example, for work.

Non-opening files do not necessarily mean that you will have to change the entire device.

There is a possibility that the problem can be eliminated by just adding 1-2 strips of RAM.

over, some devices have insufficient memory. for example, for a quad-core processor, the manufacturer can install only 4 GB, while the board supports both 8 and 16 GB.

Out of memory for Adobe Photoshop

Tip: When increasing memory, it is worth changing from 32-bit Windows to 64-bit. After that, the RAM will be fully used. If this is not done, the system will only use 3 GB of memory.

If this is not done, the system will only use 3 GB of memory.

The same applies to a 32-bit processor, but since they have not been produced for several years, the presence of such a component requires replacing not the memory, but the entire computer.

Before buying memory and increasing it, you should check whether this can be done, as well as the type of RAM and the required number of strips.

Any computer, desktop or laptop, can fit as many modules as there are dedicated slots in it.

You can determine this amount visually by disassembling the laptop and looking at what memory is already installed there, and how much you can put.

However, the issue can be solved in a simpler way. for example, by downloading the free CPU-Z program, which will work in Windows 7 and in later versions of the operating system.

The most convenient way is to find and download the application for free on the official website of its manufacturer, the CPUID company.

Determining memory parameters in different slots

After starting the program, a window with several tabs will open. One of them, SPD, will help determine which slots on your laptop are occupied, what type and amount of memory is already installed.

Slot number 1 selected by default shows device parameter information.

For the given example, this is a 4 GB DDR3 RAM bar.

If two of the same boards are installed (for optimal operation, a paired arrangement is required, i.e. 2 or 4 of the same), and there are no other slots at all, to increase the volume, you will need to carry out a complete replacement.

For example, removing both 4-gigabyte strips, putting two 8 GB each in them. If only one slot is occupied, the same memory can be installed in the second.

Four connectivity spots on laptops are very rare.

There are other programs that can help you decide on the choice of memory.

Some of them will show not only the parameters of the installed RAM and other components, but also the maximum amount of memory.

And special software can even provide information on possible options for installing the slats.

There are services that even contain links to pages with accessories, where you can find out the approximate cost of memory, and assess your ability to increase it.

When buying a new RAM module, you should make sure if you can increase its frequency.

Some laptop motherboards allow DDR3 memory, for example, with data transfer rates from 1333 to 1866 MT / s.

Others support an already higher frequency. up to 2400 MHz. You can find out which memory is suitable for your device by looking at the information about the motherboard found on the network.

It is very important to resolve this issue in advance, since a module designed to operate on a different bus or larger volume than supported by a laptop will not work.

If the module does not change, but is added, its frequency and volume should coincide with the parameters of the already installed.

Although the device will be able to work with different bars, it will most likely be much slower. and there will not be much benefit from such a replacement.

For example, you will hardly notice an increase in performance when you add another 4 GB module installed in one slot, but already for 1–2 GB, although you will spend some time and money on this.

Tip: if there are no RAM chips for your laptop on sale (for example, it supports the still outdated DDR2 type), you still need to decide whether it is worth increasing the memory, or is it better to buy a new gadget.

When the memory has already been selected and purchased, proceed to installing it on the laptop.

On some models like Asus, you will have to remove the entire back cover and remove other elements that interfere with replacing or adding RAM.

Most often this applies to compact devices. mini-laptops and netbooks.

Most of the more modern devices allow you to replace and add a bar in no more than 2-3 minutes. To do this, you just have to:

  • Disconnect the device from the network;
  • Get out the battery;
  • Open the cover of the memory module compartment;
  • Remove old microcircuits (if they change), given that they can be held on latches;
  • Install new memory until the latch clicks;
  • Replace the battery;
  • Close the lid.

You can make sure that everything is done correctly after turning on Windows and checking the amount of installed RAM in the computer properties.

In the process of increasing memory, you should make sure that your actions do not violate the warranty for the new device.

In addition, if there is no back cover for quick access to RAM, you should read the instruction manual for this model.

Some Lenovo models even have to remove the hard drive for installation. Older laptops may require even more complex actions to access free slots.

For example, sometimes one and two planks are installed in different places.

There is also a simpler and more inexpensive option, how to increase the RAM of a laptop. moreover, without even opening its case and buying new modules.

All that is required from the user is a free flash drive with a volume of 4-16 GB and installed Windows 7 or newer version.

In principle, the same method is suitable for a stationary PC, whose memory is not enough for any actions, or the speed of work is simply too low for the user’s purposes.

The main reasons for choosing a way to increase the RAM of a laptop using a flash drive can be:

  • unwillingness to spend money on improving the equipment when replacing the device with a new one in the near future;
  • lack of physical ability to install or replace the bar (outdated type of module, faulty slot, etc.);
  • the need to increase memory right at the moment.

In the Windows 7 operating system, it is possible to increase RAM due to an additional paging file created on the drive.

The utility that allows you to do this is called ReadyBoost.

And you can call it by simply opening the properties of the flash drive and selecting the tab with the appropriate name.

Using this capability of the system allows you to increase the physical memory by the following amount:

  • up to 256 GB for 64-bit Windows 7;
  • up to 32 GB for Windows 7 32-bit;
  • up to 4 GB on other OS, including XP, if you download the utility additionally (it is not built into the OS).

The manufacturer recommends using the ratio of physical and flash memory in a ratio of no more than 2.5 to 1.

That is, if there is 2 GB of RAM on the laptop, it is undesirable to make the paging file size on the flash drive more than 5 GB.

The effectiveness of the method is quite decent. when reading small files, the speed of work increases by about 5-10 times.

However, when working with large areas of data, the difference will be almost imperceptible.

In order to increase memory you will need:

  • Take any free flash drive with an interface not lower than USB 2.0. However, the best choice would be to use USB 3.0, the data transfer rate (up to 5 Gb / s) of which is comparable to the parameters of DDR3 memory modules;
  • Insert the device into the USB port;
  • Format the flash drive (optional, but desirable) in NTFS format, which will increase the amount of possible memory from the maximum for FAT32 4 GB to a much larger size.
  • If there is any data on the medium, uncheck the “Clear table of contents” checkbox. This will increase the formatting time, but it will ensure that the data is completely erased, which will now be used as RAM.

The process of formatting a flash drive to NTFS format

After a few minutes, a message about the end of formatting appears on the screen.

And after selecting the ReadyBoost tab in the properties of the flash drive, you can configure the required amount of memory increase.

Reserving memory on a flash drive for expanding RAM

So, for example, if the storage capacity is 16 GB, the laptop can use more than 15 of them.

In this case, the flash drive cannot be used to store data, and when viewing its properties, the following information will appear:

Fully usable storage for expanding memory

It is perfectly acceptable to use less memory on the flash drive. In this case, it can be used for other purposes.

However, before removing the device from the USB port, you should cancel ReadyBoost by reopening the disk properties and the utilities tab, but choosing “Do not use this device”.

Such actions will not always speed up the performance of your games and “heavy” applications. But, at least, the speed of opening photos and videos is guaranteed to increase.

According to users who have tried this technique, the browser also works faster after applying it.

Having learned how to properly increase the size of RAM on a portable PC, you can, even if you have a not very powerful device, increase the speed of working with it and even run those programs that were previously unavailable for use. new games, the latest versions of video editors.

However, when increasing memory, it should be borne in mind that for the operation of many gaming applications, the main role is played not only by the RAM, but also by the graphics memory of the video card, which, remaining at the same level, will reduce the efficiency of increasing the amount of RAM.

Therefore, in order not to be disappointed in the results of the work done, you should familiarize yourself in advance with the requirements of the program and, or not only add memory modules, but also install a new video adapter, or immediately make plans to buy a modern laptop.

How to increase RAM on a laptop: Tips

Installing RAM in a laptop is no big deal.

Determination of RAM parameters by visual inspection

There are two options for how to get the information you need, after which you can confidently answer the question that has arisen, whether it is possible to add RAM to the laptop. Without such preliminary work, the answer may be accompanied by errors, which, of course, is undesirable.

The first option involves a partial disassembly of the laptop, after which the user will be able to personally verify the number of memory slots already installed, as well as the presence of empty space, into which an additional slot can still be added. Unfortunately, if there is no place to add a new slot, then the user will have to choose between a complete rejection of the planned plans related to increasing the RAM, or replacing one slot with another, which has a larger volume.

It is also very important to know the maximum frequency supported by the motherboard. This information can also be found in technical documentation or on the Internet.

Despite the fact that it is not necessary to disassemble the laptop completely, many users refuse to do such actions once again. The programmers, meeting them halfway, developed special software that allows them to get answers to all the above questions without the need for disassembly.

A fairly useful program is CPU-Z, it is very popular among most users, since it provides the ability to easily determine all the necessary information regarding the motherboard, RAM and processor.

The CPU-Z program can be downloaded from various resources, but preference should be given only to those that have already been tested and can be trusted. After downloading, the installation of the software product is carried out, then, you need to click on the shortcut. CPU-Z will start and the program dialog box will appear on the screen.

After examining the information on two tabs of this software application, the user will be able to find out if it is possible to increase the RAM on this laptop.

Initially, you should go to the “Memory” tab. At the top of it there are three key parameters that are important to pay attention to.

The first “Type” indicates what type of RAM is already installed and whether it can be added additionally on a specific laptop.

The second “Size” shows the amount of installed RAM. Having familiarized himself with this parameter, the user must finally clarify for himself whether to do anything further. The problem is that 32-bit operating systems can only accept and use up to 3GB of RAM. Wanting to increase the volume by more than 3 GB, the user has a need to initially reinstall the system, preferring 64-bit.

The line “Dram Freguency” indicates the frequency of the memory bus.

Next, go to the SPD tab, where you can get an answer to the question: “Is it possible to add additional modules and are there free slots available?” In the drop-down list menu, select the indicated slots in turn. If the slot is free, then when you select it, an empty window will be located opposite.

To determine the last important parameter, you will have to use Internet resources. Initially, on the “Mainboard” tab in the “Manufacturer and Model” field, the model of the motherboard, as well as the manufacturer, then find the corresponding characteristics already on the Internet.

After all the important technical information about the laptop has been successfully collected, the additional RAM module has been correctly purchased, the user should familiarize himself with how to add RAM to the laptop.

The laptop should be completely de-energized initially. To this end, it is completely turned off, the charger is disconnected, and the battery is removed. Next, it is very important to press the power off button again, regardless of the fact that the laptop is already turned off. This repeated pressing allows you to permanently remove static electricity.

Static electricity should also be removed from the person who started replacing the RAM slot on the laptop. First of all, you should exclude silk clothes, then touch with one hand to the heating radiator, and with the other to the unpainted part of the laptop.

There is a cover on the back of the case in the center, which must be unscrewed, since it is behind it that the memory slots are located. If the main goal is to find out how to increase the amount of RAM on a laptop, then by adding an additional slot, the user only has to fill the empty space with a new module, thereby allowing to increase the total amount of memory.

When installing two identical modules from the same manufacturer, you can almost double the speed of the laptop by activating the dual-channel mode.

If there is no free space for installing a new module, then the user first has to remove the old module by unscrewing the clamps, and then install a new one. When properly installed, the clamps should snap shut, accompanied by a characteristic click.

At the end, it remains to reinstall the protective cover and screw it tightly.

In some laptop models, memory slots are installed not on the back of the case under a separate cover, but under the keyboard, so if you want to increase the RAM, you will have to carry out the disassembly process, accompanied by greater responsibility and care. Initially, the keyboard is removed, after which the protective metal panels are unscrewed, then a new memory slot is installed and the laptop is assembled.

If any non-standard situations arise, it will be difficult for a beginner to solve them, so it is best to seek help from a qualified technician who can quickly add a new module, while increasing the total amount of RAM.

So, every user can increase the RAM on a laptop if he first studies all the important information and follows the instructions. Additional memory will significantly improve the laptop’s performance and the user will appreciate the work done.

Unlike stationary computers, laptops are practically not upgradeable. If you can sort out and replace almost everything in a PC, then in laptops only the hard disk and RAM (other names: RAM, RAM, RAM) change painlessly. To do this, disconnect the charger, remove the battery (if possible) and unscrew the cover on the bottom. Before you will be available hard drive and RAM, which can be replaced. In older laptops from the early 2000s, this process can be more complicated due to the design, but since there are very few such devices today, we will not pay attention to them.

As a rule, RAM rarely fails, so they change it in order to increase the volume, and, accordingly, the performance of the laptop. There are several nuances to consider here.

  • 32-bit Windows operating systems do not support more than 4 GB of RAM. If you need more than 4 GB of RAM, you will need to install 64-bit Windows (you may already have it installed. open My Computer and right-click on an empty area, select Properties).
  • It is necessary to familiarize yourself with the specifications of the laptop or motherboard. This will allow you to find out the amount of maximum supported RAM, the number of slots for memory modules, the type of RAM modules. DDR1, DDR2, DDR3.
  • To find out the number of memory modules already in use, you can use the CPU-Z program (download, run and see the drop-down list in the SPD tab), or you need to unscrew the bottom cover and see live the number of slots and the amount of RAM used.
  • As a rule, laptops have two slots for RAM, so if you have, for example, two 2 GB RAM modules installed, and you want 8 GB, then the current memory modules will have to be thrown out, and in their place, insert two 4 GB each or one for 8 GB. It should also be borne in mind such a factor as the RAM soldered into the motherboard. This is typical for Ultrabooks and MacBooks. over, there are options here. the entire bar will be soldered without the possibility of increasing the volume, or one free slot for your RAM bar will be available.

Based on the above, we conclude that in order to replace RAM in a laptop, you need to find out the characteristics of the motherboard, unscrew the bottom cover and see what is already installed in the laptop and what can be improved. Then we buy RAM modules of a suitable type, turn off the power, remove the battery and change the RAM modules themselves.

To get the installed brackets out of the slots, you need to snap off the latches on the sides and calmly get them, holding the brackets on the sides, without touching the gold-plated contacts inserted into the slot. It is also easy to insert new planks into the slot when the latches snap into place, stop pressing and just check that the planks are level.

After replacing the modules, we collect everything back and turn on the laptop. To make sure everything is fine, run the CPU-Z utility again, or open My Computer. right-click on the free area and select Properties. In the window that opens, in the System section, opposite the Installed memory (RAM) item, we look at the available memory.

There is nothing difficult about replacing laptop components yourself, but if you are still not confident in your abilities, you can watch the following video from the company. which shows how elementary everything is.

Many laptop models offer the ability to simplify user access to memory modules for expansion or replacement. Therefore, there is often no corresponding need to disassemble the entire computer, as is the case, for example, when cleaning the fan from dust or when replacing the keyboard. At the same time, your laptop model may have its own design features, so read the procedure for dismantling the RAM in the repair manual in advance.

To add RAM to the laptop. proceed in the following order:
Turn off your laptop completely;
Disconnect from it all connected external devices, the power supply cord, and remove the battery;
On the underside of the laptop, unscrew the screws securing the RAM compartment cover (if your computer model has a corresponding design), and lifting up, remove the cover.
Spread apart the clips holding the RAM bar in the corresponding slot and gently pull out the memory module.
Reassemble the laptop with a new RAM strip in reverse order.

One of the fastest ways to improve the performance of a mobile computer is to increase the amount of RAM. There are several factors to consider to properly select and install RAM cards.

My laptop has 4GB of RAM, but this amount is not enough for me. How can I increase its volume ?

In order for your laptop to start working better, you need to know how to properly increase your laptop’s RAM. “Correctness” in this case means that the RAM strip you bought will be compatible with the motherboard, processor and already installed RAM module.

Before heading out for the extra plank, see if you can add more RAM to your laptop. If you have an older laptop, then its motherboard may simply not support more RAM. Find out the model of the motherboard and see its specification on the manufacturer’s website:

  • Download the CPU-Z utility (you will still need it to determine the number of free slots).
  • Run the program and go to the “Mainboard” tab.
  • View your motherboard model.
  • Find your motherboard information on the laptop manufacturer’s website.

In the specification of the motherboard, you need to pay attention to the points related to RAM.

From the information provided, you should get the following information:

  • The supported type is DDR3. If the laptop is old, then it may have DDR2 or DDR1 memory. They are interchangeable, so you need to buy only those strips that are compatible with the motherboard.
  • The maximum size allowed is 64 GB. There is no point in installing anymore, additional gigabytes will not be used.
  • The supported frequency is from 800 to 1800 MHz. The frequency of the RAM should fit into this gap and be as high as possible.
  • 4 x DIMM. the number of slots for brackets with SO-DIMM form factor.

For maximum compatibility, it is better to immediately purchase sets of two identical modules. If you install one additional bar, then it must completely match the characteristics of the already installed module.

  • Run CPU-Z.
  • Go to the “Memory” tab.

Check the type again. DDR3. Pay attention to the line “DRAM Frequency”. it indicates the bandwidth.

Timing (delay before request execution) is shown below:

You need to buy a stick of RAM with exactly the same specifications. If nothing is displayed when you select a slot on the “SPD” tab, then nothing is connected to it, that is, you can install an additional RAM module into it. Basically, this is all you need to know about how to increase the amount of RAM. However, there is another possibility of accelerating a video card. overclocking.

If we calculate how much it costs to increase the RAM, it becomes clear that this is a serious financial investment in the modernization of the laptop. However, if you look at it, it is not necessary to buy an additional RAM bar.

Increasing the frequency (overclocking, overclocking) is performed. For more information, see the “Advanced” section. Depending on the motherboard model and BIOS firmware version, the name of specific items changes. Let’s see how to increase the amount of RAM in BIOS, using the ASUS motherboard as an example:

After expanding the item in which the RAM frequency is indicated, you will see the available values.

Do not set a value that exceeds the maximum allowable indicator for your RAM model, otherwise the bar may burn out.

After increasing the frequency, run the memory test. Press WinR and type the command “mdsched”. Agree to reboot, during which the RAM will be checked for errors. If no errors are found, you can increase the frequency a little more without exceeding the maximum permissible values.

Few in such devices undergoes an upgrade (or, in any case, it is difficult), but in many cases it is quite easy to increase the memory on a laptop, this instruction is exactly about this and is aimed at novice users.

Some laptops from the past may have configurations that are not quite balanced by today’s standards, for example. Core i7 and 4 GB of RAM, although it is quite possible to increase it to 8 or even 16 GB, which for a number of applications, games, work with video and graphics can speed up work and relatively inexpensive.

Before buying memory sticks and increasing RAM, it would be nice to know how many RAM slots in the laptop and how many of them are occupied, as well as what type of memory you need.

If you have Windows 10 installed on your computer, then this can be done very simply: start the task manager (you can from the menu that appears by right-clicking on the Start button), if the task manager is presented in a compact form, click the “Details” button below, then go to the “Performance” tab and select “Memory”.

At the bottom right, you will see information about how many memory slots are used and how many are available, as well as information about the memory frequency in the “Speed” item (from this information you can find out if DDR3 or DDR4 memory is used on a laptop).

In the case of Windows 8 and Windows 7, you can disassemble the laptop (or, if a separate cover is provided for accessing the memory, remove it) and look at the markings and the presence of slots (by the way, this information can also be in the instructions for the laptop). But, since my articles are still for novice users, let’s consider an easier way to find out everything you need to without first disassembling the laptop.

The free program CPU-Z will help us with this, showing in detail information about a computer or laptop. You can download the program from the developer’s official website at (I recommend downloading the ZIP archive to run CPU-Z without installing it on your computer, located in the Download column on the left).

After downloading, run the program and pay attention to the following tabs, which will help us in the task of increasing the laptop’s RAM:

In general, in most cases, it is enough to look only at the SPD tab, all the necessary information on the type, frequency and number of slots is there and from it you can deduce the answer to the question of whether it is possible to increase the laptop memory and what is needed for this.

For example, from the screenshots above, you can draw conclusions:

  • The laptop has two slots for RAM.
  • One is occupied by a 4 GB DDR3 PC3-12800 module.
  • The used chipset is HM77, the supported maximum amount of RAM is 16 GB (this is searched on the Internet by chipset, laptop model or motherboard).
  • Buy another 4GB RAM SO-DIMM (laptop memory) DDR3 PC12800 and increase the laptop memory to 8GB.
  • Buy two modules, but 8 GB each (4 will have to be removed) and increase the RAM to 16 GB.

To work in dual-channel mode (which is preferable), two modules of the same volume are required (the manufacturer may be different, if, for example, we use the first option) in two slots.

Note: in some cases, CPU-Z may show 4 memory slots for laptops, in which there are actually only 2 of them. Consider this, as well as the fact that almost all laptops have exactly 2 slots (except for some gaming and professional models).

In this example, we will consider the option of installing RAM in a laptop, when it was directly provided by the manufacturer. in this case, access to the memory slots is facilitated, as a rule, there is a separate cover for this.

Ultrabooks and some compact laptops do not have anything like this, and the disassembly pattern may differ from model to model. over, for some laptops, such an upgrade will void the warranty, please take this into account.

Note: if you do not know how to install memory in your laptop, I recommend to go to YouTube and search for the keyword “laptop model ram upgrade”. most likely you will find a video where the whole process will be demonstrated visually.

  • Unplug the laptop, including from the outlet. It is also advisable to remove the battery.
  • Use a screwdriver to open the cover, you will see the memory modules installed in the slots.
  • They can be removed, or new ones added. When removing, please note that, as a rule, memory modules are fixed on the side with latches that you need to bend.
  • When you insert memory, do it tightly, until the latches snap into place (on most models). All this is comparatively easy.

When finished, replace the cover, turn on the laptop and check if the BIOS and Windows can see the installed RAM.

The solution that is installed in most modern motherboards. It has a clear and attractive interface, as a rule, it is Russified and supports mouse control. For owners of such boards, moving through the BIOS sections with arrows is a thing of the past.

There are much more options for configuring RAM here than in previous versions. What can you do, the table suggests.

Award BIOS

While the computer is rebooting, enter the BIOS using a special key or a combination of keyboard buttons. It can be different depending on the motherboard.

Use the combination Ctrl F1 to get to the settings.

A window will open where you need to use the keyboard arrows to go to “MB Intelligent Tweaker (M.I.T.)” and press Enter.

Find “System Memory Multiplier” in the next menu. Here you can set the clock speed of the RAM up or down by changing the multiplier. Do not overestimate the specified value, otherwise there is a risk of making it worse.

Important! Any changes should be made gradually: one step at a time, and after each change, restart the PC and check if everything is in order.

Save parameter changes, exit.

After that, it is recommended to run the software for testing the RAM. It can be AIDA64 or any analog available to the user.

Note: you can increase the performance of the RAM by increasing the voltage, but this should be done with extreme caution. Safe maximum. 0.15 volts.

How to configure RAM in BIOS

There are three main ways to change the settings in the BIOS. Each of them corresponds to the motherboard firmware installed in the system. For this reason, the user should study the characteristics of the motherboard before changing anything.

Warning! To touch the subsystem to an unprepared user means the possibility of spoiling something, violating the terms of the guarantee. If there is uncertainty, it is better to go to a specialist.

How to set up RAM in BIOS: instructions in 4 simple sections

To make a computer system work faster, you can “tinker” with RAM, increasing its performance. How and for what else you need to set the RAM settings, as well as where in the BIOS to change the frequency and timing settings, the article will tell.

How to change RAM timings in BIOS

Timings indicate the number of clock pulses that the RAM needs to perform a certain operation. The lower the timing, the more efficient the RAM, so changing the timings is a useful procedure.

But carrying out such operations intuitively is a dangerous undertaking, because this way you can disable the RAM, and most likely it will not be possible to reanimate the modules. Therefore, you must first test the components with basic Windows tools. If the operative is working properly, you can adjust the timings. Then on Windows, you can check if the setup was successful.

It is recommended to perform such operations precisely through the BIOS: in case of a failure, the user can quickly roll back the parameters to the factory settings.

Why you need to configure RAM in BIOS

After installing RAM, changing its settings can be useful. Indeed, without additional settings of the bar, operatives can work at the minimum of their capabilities. And by adjusting the RAM in your own way, you can overclock it. increase the frequency. This can improve the performance of your computer. However, it is worth knowing that not every operating system and not all motherboards support this. So if you need such an opportunity, you should take care of this before buying components.

READ  The laptop slows down when working on the network

Advice: if you plan to install new boards in your PC yourself, it is better to install complete models, such as HyperX SO-DIMM DDR3, with the same timings and frequencies. Otherwise, the higher frequency option will automatically operate at the speed of the slower one, or they will conflict and the whole system will stop working.

Note: a pair of 4GB sticks is more efficient than one 8GB one. Dual-channel mode provides an opportunity to get an increase in CPU performance by 5-10%, and GPU. up to 50%. If the PC has 4 slots, and the user has two modules, then to activate multichannel, they should be installed through one.

This system does not differ much from the previous one. Unless the names of the items have been changed. So, after entering, you need to find “Advanced BIOS Features” and go to “Advanced DRAM Configuration”, and then change the settings in the same way as in the above diagram.

How to change the frequency of RAM in BIOS

Where to set the value. has already been described in the section on settings, so here’s what you should consider when changing.

  • When the user sets the frequency himself, for example, 2400 MHz, the RAM operates at basic timings, for example, 11-14-14-33. But even with a reduced response, many models function without interruption.
  • The most effective combination: timing. low, frequency. high, however, you need to consider the compatibility of values.
  • To increase the performance, it is recommended to activate the dual-channel mode, and if the motherboard has 8 slots for memory strips, it is even better: this is already a four-channel mode.

Interesting: the frequency of the 16 GB HyperX Predator kit is 3600 MHz. It also has backlighting and support for Extreme Memory Profiles technology, which allows faster and more convenient memory tuning.

  • It should be understood that overclocking success is not 100% guaranteed. If the parameters are too high, the memory will not work.
  • If, after several attempts to start the PC, the system does not respond, you need to undo everything that has changed. The Clear CMOS jumper (aka JBAT) will help with this.

It is not difficult to “pump” RAM so that it demonstrates its best performance in order to add speed to the PC. You just need to know how to change the settings correctly and proceed with caution.

How to increase RAM on your computer

The world does not stand still, and new solutions are replacing technologies that seemed to us to be breakthrough several years ago. Development in this case is easy to explain: programs are becoming more demanding on internal resources, and performance is reaching a new level.

Technologically, few people want to lag behind. Increasingly, users are resorting, if not to a complete replacement of outdated hardware, then to a partial upgrade. The popularity of the latter method is easy to explain: for a relatively small fee, you can achieve significant success in the performance of your PC and laptop. And the leader in the ratio of price = actual result is not in vain considered to be the installation of new RAM.

Installing new planks

The process for adding new planks is identical to that for installation. A distinctive feature is the presence of several slots located close to each other.

Some nuances

However, as mentioned earlier, there are several important assumptions in the relationship between RAM and processor, which we must mention. “”, in this case, is not always “better” and some nuances may affect the final result. information about the characteristics of the OP for a computer is described in a separate article. For now, please note that before buying a board, you should pay attention to the following points.

How to find out the type of RAM using CPU-Z

As we have written many times before, before buying any accessories to upgrade your PC, it is important that Honor has compatibility with the parts you are already using. In turn, for this you need to know what is hidden inside the case of your PC. And if you disassemble the “box” in search of the coveted names of parts is lazy, and the passport with this information has long been buried with a ton of other waste paper, then the ideal way out of the situation would be to install special utilities.

At the moment, we consider CPU-Z to be the best option (by clicking on the link, you can download the archive with the program and its description about Honor). This application will give an informative summary of all the components of your computer at the touch of a few keys.

  • In order to install the utility, go to the official. developer’s site and click on the “Setup” button.
  • Then repeat the same action, only with the appeared button “Download now”.
  • Save the installer and then install the applications on your computer.
  • Run the application. To view data on RAM, go to the “SPD” tab
  • In the “MemorySlotSelection” tab, select the slot in which the bracket is used.
  • As we can see in the screenshot, both of the strips in our laptop are used by identical Samsung strips of 4 GB each, with DDR4 memory type, operating at 1200 MHz.

What to look for

Before adding RAM to the currently used memory, Honor needs a few nuances:

This indicator affects the functionality of the PC, as well as the ability to run demanding applications. The more volume is used, the more efficiently (faster) the running processes will be processed. Like the bus frequency, its maximum indicator is determined by the CPU and you can see it using another, no less well-known, AIDA64 program.

Download and install the application on your computer. Start AIDA64. In the list on the left, find the “Motherboard” directory. Click on it.

Then select “Chipset”. In the window that appears on the right, you can find the information you are interested in.

When deciding on the volume when buying, it is important to take into account the bit depth of your OS. Windows on a 32-bit system does not display more than 3 GB of RAM, regardless of the number of dies and the size. Before upgrading, it is quite possible that you should think about reinstalling the OS, as well as all the applications used.

In order to improve performance and increase the speed of computing capabilities, modern motherboards are designed to work in dual-channel mode. Externally, this is represented by several connectors for RAM lines of the same color, located perpendicular to the installed motherboard memory.

If there are more than two available slots, manufacturers paint them in different colors for convenience. Thus, it is easier for the user to decide in which slot to install the bar (they must be of the same color). If you can’t differentiate slots by color, we recommend that you refer to the official documentation that came with your motherboard.

On the practical side, in this way we can use several planks at once in the work of our computer and achieve maximum performance. Please note that DDR / DDR2 memory sticks do not support multichannel.

Different amount of RAM sticks

The first and most frequent question is whether it is possible to install RAM of different sizes and whether it will work. The short answer is yes, everything will be fine and it will work.

The most important nuance during installation: if memory of different sizes is used on a computer or laptop, it will not work in dual-channel mode. That is, it will work slower than in the case of using two slats of the same volume. For modern top-end systems with support for a four-channel memory mode, this also applies.

Usually, this is not noticeable, but there are scenarios when the difference manifests itself and is noticeable: for example, when using integrated, the advantage of FPS when working with memory in dual-channel mode can be in the region of 10-25%.

Also, just in case, I will note in this section one more point that users often turn to. about the maximum size of the memory stick. Remember: when your laptop with two slots has a maximum capacity of 16 GB (the numbers are just for example), and for a PC with 4 slots. 32 GB, this almost always means that you can set this maximum only by filling all the slots with equal modules RAM. That is, in the first case, you cannot use just one bar of 16, and in the second. two of 16 (for other highs, the logic is the same). However, in the case of a PC, there are exceptions and it is better to familiarize yourself with the documentation for the motherboard.

Is it possible to put memory with different frequencies and timings

The answer to this question for DDR4 and DDR3 memory is almost always yes. The memory will work. But it will do it at frequencies and timings of a less productive memory strip. Problems with dual-channel mode usually do not arise either (assuming the same amount of memory for each module).

If, for some reason, the frequency and timings of a less productive RAM module are not supported by a faster bar, then the BIOS will set those parameters (even lower) that will be safe and supported by both modules: there is one, since all of them can work with basic parameters for its type of memory.

Is it possible to install RAM with different frequency, volume, timings, voltage and manufacturer

When it comes to increasing the amount of RAM on a computer or laptop, one of the most common questions is whether it is possible to install different memory. What if there are different RAM strips, where the manufacturer, frequency, timings, volume or voltage differ? All this will be discussed in the instructions.

I will make a reservation in advance that all information about installing different RAM on one device is given for RAM modules of modern DDR4 / DDR4L and DDR3 / DDR3L memory; on older equipment, various nuances with performance happened more often. See also: How to increase the amount of RAM on a laptop.

RAM installation with different voltages. 1.35 V and 1.5 V

On sale there are DDR4 and DDR3 memory modules with a voltage of 1.5 volts and DDR4L and DDR3L modules with a voltage of 1.35 volts. Can they be combined and will they work. In this question, the answer is already less straightforward:

  • RAM 1.35 V can work with a voltage of 1.5 volts. Thus, if a higher voltage bar was originally installed on your laptop or computer, and you added a lower voltage, everything will be fine.
  • 1.5V memory will not work on a motherboard where only 1.35V can be used. Typically, these are laptops. In this case, either you will see a message that the memory is not supported when you turn on the laptop, or you will not see anything (black screen).

The last point has its own nuances: the fact is that despite the fact that some laptops are sold with low voltage memory, they also support higher voltages. However, if you did not find clear official information about this on the official website or in the documentation, it is better not to risk it.

Will RAM from different manufacturers work on the same computer or laptop

Yes, it will. Provided that all other points and differences were taken into account when purchasing memory modules, differences from manufacturers do not lead to performance problems, although this happened on older systems about 20 years ago.

And, in conclusion, in order not to make mistakes when purchasing additional RAM, I strongly recommend that you find the official documentation for your motherboard (if we are talking about a desktop computer) or your laptop, usually there is a section related to upgrading RAM. If you cannot find the information you need, do not hesitate to contact the manufacturer’s Support, they usually answer.

Good day. Laptop ASUS S56CB RAM is factory gell 4gb 2 1600 Mhz straps. Is it possible to put instead of one 4gb. 8g geil1600Mhz. Will it work or not?

Hello. Not sure. Now I looked and write that it seems like it only supports 8 GB in total.

I have 8GB of RAM, and it has a clock frequency of 2133 MHz and now there are no such RAMs if I buy a RAM with a clock frequency of 2400 MHz. is it possible and so on?

Yes, you can, it should work properly.

Good day.
I have 3 strips of 4gb 1866hz on my motherboard, can I put another couple of 22gb on 1333hz. Together they do not work, but separately yes.

Can not say. It will depend on the specific motherboard. And by the way, you have more than 4 memory slots there.?

Hello, if the computer has 2400 MHz, and the motherboard only supports 2133, will it work
