Automate the switching process

Due to the fact that enabling / disabling touch input on Windows 10 takes a certain amount of time, this process can be automated. For ease of understanding, this procedure has been divided into several stages.

Disable Windows 10 touchscreen

The touch functionality introduced in Windows 10, which is installed on a computer or laptop, is rarely used. At the same time, this option consumes part of the energy, which reduces the battery life of the device. In such circumstances, it is recommended to disable the touchscreen on the laptop.

This can be done using the following algorithm:

  • Run through the main menu Start Device Manager.

enable, touchscreen, lenovo, laptop

  • Open the branch “Human Interface Devices”.
  • Select the “HID-Compliant Touchscreen” section and right-click to enable the “Disable device” option.

The touch screen turns on in reverse order. But after each procedure, you may need to restart your computer.

Reasons for shutdown

Touch doesn’t work on Windows 10 for the following reasons:

  • the screen is cracked or dirty;
  • errors when installing the latest updates and drivers;
  • conflict between system processes.

Often sensor problems on Windows 10 can be resolved with the built-in Digitiser calibration function. This tool is located under Hardware and Sound. Tablet PC Settings.

Also, to eliminate the problem in question, it is often enough to download new drivers from the official website of the computer manufacturer. But if this procedure does not restore touch input, then you need to roll back Windows 10 to the last savepoint.

Create an execution file

In a text editor (even Notepad will do) you need to write the following code:

devcon status “% touchscreenid%” | findstr “running”

In the remaining open window with properties, right-click on the corresponding equipment identifier and copy the name. The latter then needs to be inserted into the above code instead of the line “ID_HERE”.

The text file should be saved as “touchscreen.bat” in any folder on your computer. Otherwise, you will have to make changes to the above code. Placement does not affect the operation of the process.

Setting the identifier

The second step is to launch the Device Manager. This can be done through the “Start” or the keyboard shortcut “Win” and “X”. Then, right-click the “HID-Compliant Touch Screen” setup menu and open the “Properties” section in the drop-down list.

In a new window, go to the “Details” tab and select “Hardware identifiers”. This section should be left for a while. A later open window will be required to complete the automation of the switching process.

How to turn the touch screen on and off on Windows 10, instructions

But, like other processes, this one periodically stops working. Depending on the cause of the failure, different solutions are used to solve the problem. How to enable touchscreen on Windows 10.

Configuring the console to automate the process

To automate the switching process, you need to launch Visual Studio Express, through which you need to connect the Windows Device Console. However, this procedure, which is usually used to accomplish the task at hand, takes a long time. To simplify this process, you can use the application from joequery.me.

  • Download and unzip the application into a suitable folder.
  • Open the Windows 8.1 folder and select the type of operating system installed on the computer (32 or 64bit).
  • Use the “Win” and “R” keys to open the “Run” window and write the path “C: \ Windows \ System32”.
  • The executable file “Devcon”, located at the address at which the download was unzipped, move to the opened folder.

Finally, you need to open the “Properties” section of the devcon.exe executable file using the right mouse button. Then, through the “Compatibility” section, you need to run the application on behalf of the Administrator.

Transferring a shortcut

The shortcut lets you quickly turn touch input on and off. To do this, you need to do the following:

  • Right-click on the previously created file and create a shortcut.
  • Right-click on the shortcut and go to the properties tab.
  • In the line opposite the “Target” you must write “exe / C” before the text that was previously entered here.
  • In the line “Run” select “Minimize”. This is done so that after each start of the automatic switching process, a window with the Command Line does not open. Otherwise, this procedure will take longer.
  • Open the “Advanced” section and check the box so that the application is launched each time on behalf of the Administrator.

You can also place the created shortcut in any folder on your computer. But it is more convenient if the file is on the Desktop. The computer does not need to be restarted after performing the described steps.

What to do if you can’t see a HID-compliant touchscreen?

If you do not see an entry for a HID Compliant Touchscreen in Device Manager, there are two possible reasons. First, Windows is not aware that you have a touchscreen that can be fixed by scanning for hardware changes. Second, you don’t have a touchscreen.

If your touchscreen has never worked and you do not see a list of HID-compliant touchscreens, contact your device manufacturer. Give them your product number and they can tell you if your device should have a touchscreen. Many laptop lines include similar versions with and without touchscreens.

If you’re sure your device should have a touchscreen, here’s how to get Windows to check it:

If you don’t have Device Manager open yet, click on the search box on the taskbar, type Device Manager and click Device Manager to open it again.

Click on the arrow next to Human Interface Devices. to expand the list and make sure you don’t see the HID-compliant touchscreen.

Click Scan for hardware changes.

Check the list of Human Interface Devices. to see if there is a HID compliant touch screen.

If the Windows Setup Wizard detects your touchscreen, check if it works. If not, skip to the next section to check for driver updates.

If it doesn’t find your touchscreen, you may have a hardware issue or your device may not have a touchscreen at all.

You need a touchscreen in Windows 10?

No, Windows 10 laptops and 2-in-1 devices don’t technically need a touchscreen. This means that you may run into situations where you find that the touchscreen is disabled. Disabling the touchscreen can prevent inadvertent data entry, such as tapping on items you didn’t want to tap, which is why some people prefer to do without this feature.

The main reason for enabling the touchscreen on a Windows 10 device is that it can make some tasks easier, as touching the screen usually takes less time than moving the mouse and clicking with a small trackpad.

In some cases, a touchscreen and a compatible pen device may allow you to use a Windows 10 laptop, 2-in-1, or tablet in the same way you use a drawing tablet such as the Cintiq. If you’re into graphic design, this is a great way to get some extra functionality on your Windows 10 touchscreen device.

How to disable the touchscreen on a laptop: tips and tricks

From time to time, laptop users think about how to disable the touchscreen on a laptop. This term usually refers to touchpads. touch-sensitive panels on devices that replace the operation of a computer mouse. Touchscreen only on select laptop models. it is truly a display that responds to “manual” commands. Therefore, we will briefly familiarize ourselves with disabling them. Let’s focus on disabling laptop touchpads.

Methods for solving the problem

How to disable the touchscreen on a laptop?

  • deactivate the touchpad via hot keys;
  • disable the control through the OS settings;
  • use additional software and drivers to accomplish the task.

What is the best choice? There can be no definite answer to this question. For example, not all laptops have touchpad control buttons. And therefore, the first option in the current situation will not work, no matter how convenient it is considered.

Additional software to help

Some laptops have Synaptics touchpads. This can play into the hands of the user. Synaptics has a number of standalone drivers and a dedicated application for adjusting sensor settings.

To disable the touchpad, you need:

  • Go to the “Control Panel”. “Mouse”. To do this, the “Small icons” parameter must be set in the information display settings.
  • Look in the “Options.” Section, next to which the Synaptics icon is drawn.
  • Select the touchpad and click on the “Disable” button.

Important: in this window, users will be able to configure the operation of the sensor. For example, the ability to turn off the panel using separate keys or after connecting a USB mouse.

Disable by the program

The Windows operating system provides a special utility that involves managing the sensor.

It is called Synaptycs. This program has already been launched by default on laptops with a touchscreen. You can find it in the list of programs or by right-clicking on the touchpad icon located in the taskbar in the lower right corner.

Another way to programmatically turn off is to use the Start button. This method is relevant only for the Windows operating system with an update of at least version 10. The method works like this: you need to go through the path “Start-Settings-Devices”, find the “Touch Panel” tab, where the “Advanced Settings” tab will be located. It is this tab that is used to control the touchscreen display. Any screen setting can be made in it. Including disabling the touchscreen.

Depending on the operating system, the path to the settings panel can be completely different:

  • Windows 8: Start-Settings-Computer and Devices-Mouse & Touchpad
  • Windows 7: Start-Control Panel-Hardware and Sound-Mouse

In version 7, oddly enough, sensor control is located in the mouse control tab. But it is in it that it is much easier to turn on or off the touch screen than in newer versions of the operating system.

One-button shutdown

A simple and affordable way to turn off is to use a key or a combination of them on the keyboard. Typically, the laptop manufacturer marks these keys with special identifying symbols, and places them at the top of the keyboard.

An example of a touch screen off button on a laptop

One touch of a button is enough to deactivate the touch screen. But this only works on licensed devices.

Important! The manufacturer posts detailed information on the rules of operation on its website. Perhaps there will be information on the keys to disable the touch screen.

Disconnect via task manager

An equally simple way to manage the state of the touchscreen is to use the task manager.

First you need to call the task manager. On all versions of the Windows operating system, this can be done with the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keyboard shortcut. After simultaneously holding down this key combination, a task window will pop up on the screen. In it you need to find a program that is responsible for controlling the screen sensor. Depending on the laptop model. The program can be named in different ways. Most often it is all the same Synaptics.

As soon as the program is found in the manager, you need to click on it with the left mouse button and click on the “end process” button. The performed operation will completely disable the touch screen until the next restart of the laptop.

Disable keyboard shortcut

As a rule, this is the Fn key and one of the F keys. To find it clearly, you will have to study the instructions for the laptop or find a special icon on one of the buttons. Possible options: F1, F2, F3, F5.

No buttons have a dedicated icon? Then it is worth checking the combination of the Ctrl and Shift keys with other keys on the computer. Sometimes the manufacturer uses numeric keypad elements in combination.

Disable the touchscreen on a laptop in different ways

In the age of high technology, you will not surprise anyone with a laptop with a touch screen. Almost everyone can buy a similar device for their office or home.

Often a touchscreen is not needed at all. Therefore, it becomes necessary to disable it. And, oddly enough, not everyone knows how to properly disable the touchscreen on a laptop. In practice, this turns out to be no more difficult than, for example, unlocking a smartphone.

Disconnect via device manager

Through the device manager, you can manage any programs on your computer. But in order not to accidentally disable something important, you need to have the proper level of PC use. It is better for beginners not to use this method.

The device manager is invoked using the WinR or WinPause keyboard shortcut. In the first case, in the “Run” field, enter the devmgmt.mc command. In the second case, you will need to select “Device Manager” in the “System” item.

Next, in the device manager, you need to find the “Mice and other devices” tab. Opening it, the bottom will be a device with the letters HID. This device must be turned off. If there are several such devices, then you need to turn off everything. This device is the laptop’s touch screen.

You can turn the touchscreen back on by performing all the above manipulations and turning the devices back on.

Disable via BIOS

Any hardware device connected to the laptop can be disabled in the BIOS. Including the display. An important point is that it is better for inexperienced users not to use the BIOS for configuration, because an incorrect request can damage information on a laptop or completely delete the operating system.

But if the user is confident in their capabilities, then you can proceed to disabling the touch screen. First you need to get into the BIOS itself. On many laptops, this can be done by holding down the F1 or F2 key while turning it on. It can also be another F key on the keyboard. Everything depends on the model. On Lenovo laptops, a special key is provided for this at all, located at the charging slot.

After logging in, you need to move to the “Advanced” tab. In it, select the “System Properties” tab, and then “Mouse / Keyboard features” and then go to the “Internal Poiting Device” tab. There will be an item “Disable”, which must be selected and activated with the Enter key. That’s it, the touch screen will be disabled, and now you can exit the BIOS, having previously saved all the settings. This can be done using the Esc key and following the prompts on the laptop screen.

  • “Do not ask for permission, always switch mode”. your computer will automatically switch to tablet mode without any additional request.

You can select the first option “Do not prompt for permission or switch mode” to keep the system running in desktop mode. Or the second option “Always ask for permission before switching modes” to have a choice when deciding which mode to use at any given moment.

Tablet example

If you have a convertible tablet, separating a portion of the tablet from the docking keyboard will cause the device to switch to tablet mode from desktop mode. When you reconnect the two parts of the convertible tablet (or flip the screen on your convertible laptop back to the laptop position), you will return to desktop mode, complete with standard Windows operating system control options.

In tablet mode, all applications you open, including the launch screen, will automatically go to full screen display mode. For this reason, you will not see your usual desktop, but you can access it through the “File Explorer”.

You will notice that the taskbar now has a Back arrow button next to the Start button, and you will also see that your icons of installed applications and programs have disappeared from the desktop (but you can re-enable them in the Settings application. which we will talk about further).

Nearly all aspects of the user interface are best suited for touch use in tablet mode; this means that the buttons are slightly larger, the back button has been added and the icons of the pinned programs on the taskbar have been removed, and the on-screen keyboard appears whenever you select a text field.
