How to disable the touchpad on a laptop

Disconnect keys

Most modern laptops have dedicated keys on the keyboard to disable the touchpad. you will find them on almost all Asus, Lenovo, Acer and Toshiba laptops (some brands have them, but not all models).

Below, where it is written separately by brand, there are photos of keyboards with marked keys for disabling. In general terms, you need to press the Fn key and the touchpad enable / disable icon key to disable the touchpad.

Important: if the specified key combinations do not work, it is quite possible that the necessary software is not installed. Details from this: Fn key not working on laptop.

Disable touchpad with official drivers

If your laptop has all the necessary drivers from the manufacturer’s official website (see How to install drivers on a laptop), as well as related programs, that is, you did not reinstall Windows, and after that did not use the driver-pack (which I do not recommend for laptops). then to disable the touchpad you can use the methods provided by the manufacturer.

Disable touchpad without drivers

We launch the MMC console snap-in called Device Manager via Win → X or by executing “devmgmt.msc” in the search bar or in the “Run” window.

disable, touchpad, huawei, laptop

Find the device you need. It is usually located in the “Mice and other pointing devices” section or in the HID devices.

It’s called the TouchPad, USB device, or USB mouse. Here we will have to practice, turning off each device in turn, until we find the right one. This is done through the context menu using the “Disable” command. If the option turned out to be incorrect, activate the disabled controller back and try another option. Either mouse or touchpad will work anyway.

If both controllers are disabled due to experimentation, use the keyboard to enable the mouse. The button with the drop-down list image located to the right of the spacebar on the keyboard will help here.

Solving the issue with Lenovo

As in Asus, you can disable the controller built into the laptop using the Fn key combination and one of the functional buttons. It is indicated by the corresponding icon (in the photo it is F6).

Sony Vaio

As a standard, if you have official Sony programs installed, you can configure the touchpad, including turning it off through the Vaio Control Center, in the “Keyboard and Mouse” section.

Also, some (but not all models) have hotkeys for disabling the touchpad. in the photo above it is Fn F1, however this also requires all official Vaio drivers and utilities, in particular Sony Notebook Utilities.

How to disable touchpad on Windows 10

Today, a person who is quite versed in computers, asked me how to disable the touchpad on his laptop, as it interferes with work. I suggested, and then looked to see how many people are interested in this issue on the Internet. And, as it turned out, there are very many, and therefore it makes sense to write in detail about this. See also: Touchpad not working on Windows 10 laptop.

In the instructions, I will first tell you in stages how to disable the touchpad of a laptop using the keyboard, driver settings, and also in Device Manager or Windows Mobility Center. And then I’ll go over each popular laptop brand separately. May also be helpful (especially if you have kids): How to disable keyboard in Windows 10, 8 and Windows 7.

Below in the guide you will find keyboard shortcuts and other methods for the following laptop brands (but first, I recommend reading the first part, which will work for almost all cases):

  • Asus
  • Dell
  • HP
  • Lenovo
  • Acer
  • Sony Vaio
  • Samsung
  • Toshiba

Samsung

Mostly in Korean portable computers, the touchpad is deactivated by the Fn F5 key combination, of course, only if there are installed drivers for the touchpad.

Using the keyboard

The laptop keyboard, in contrast to the standard (used on a PC), is equipped with an additional special key “Fn”. It is required for most hot combinations to:

  • Enable / disable touchpad.
  • Adjust monitor brightness.
  • Use the “additional” numeric keypad, etc.

The position of the “Fn” button is not strictly regulated, but usually it is located in the lowest row, first or second in a row.

To disable the touchpad (Asus, Dell, HP, Acer, Lenovo. this method is relevant for all brands) using a key combination, you need to hold down Fn and one of the buttons (F4, F6, F7, F9), which has the corresponding icon. Its appearance can be different.

The exact location of the button (in the range F1-F12) is usually indicated in the manual that came with each laptop.

How to disable the touchpad on different brands of laptops

Before you go into the registry and understand the intricacies of system settings, you should try to solve the problem with touch input using the simplest methods. Next, we will look at the most common (and working!) Ways to disable the touchpad for typewriters from the most popular brands.

Most often, you can disable the touchpad in Asus with a combination of the Fn and F7 (or F9) keys. Settings change indication is displayed on the screen.

HP is trying to make the life of its customers easier, therefore, in many modern notebook models from this company, the sensor is disabled by a special double touch of the upper left corner of the sensor.

Determining whether it is possible to disable the touchpad on an HP laptop in this way is very simple: if there is no special icon with a touchpad on the F1-F12 keys, then double-tap deactivation works. If it is present, then you should use this button in combination with Fn.

Another method available to owners of HP models is to press and hold your finger on the upper left corner of the touchpad for at least 5 seconds. This option is available only in laptops with a preinstalled OS, since such add-ons are not included in the standard Windows package.

Here’s a quick guide for those who want to know how to disable the touchpad in Dell laptops with Windows 8.1 or later:

  • Open the touchpad settings (in the search bar of the “Start” menu, enter “Touchpad”).
  • Disable the sensor using a special switch (if available).
  • If there is no such switch, enter the menu “Additional mouse parameters”.
  • Activate the Dell Touchpad tab and click on the sensor image.
  • Find the touchpad activity switch there.
  • Save changes.

For Windows systems, whose version is lower than 8.1, you should:

  • Press Windows R.
  • Main.cpl.
  • Go to the Dell Touchpad tab and click on the touchpad picture.
  • Turn the touchpad on or off using the slider.
  • Save entered settings.

Via BIOS

First you need to enter the BIOS settings menu. This can be done by pressing a special key before loading the operating system. For different manufacturers (or even models) of laptops, these keys (or their combinations) are different. Most common: F2, Del, F1, F8, F12.

Further in the section “ADVANCED” we find “Internal Pointing Device” and set the value “Disabled” for it. After that, you can confirm the saving of the settings and exit the BIOS (Save and exit).

It should be noted that this method does not work with all laptop models, and, moreover, after using it, it is impossible to enable the touchpad using the OS and drivers.

How to disable the touchpad on a laptop

The touchpad (touchpad) is an invariable attribute of any laptop that replaces the mouse. It is indispensable when traveling and is convenient if there is no possibility to use additional devices. But sometimes he even gets in the way. So how to disable the touchpad on a laptop?

How to disable the touchpad on a laptop (random clicks are triggered when I work with a laptop with a mouse)

Help with the touchpad. The fact is that I work with a laptop with a mouse, and in principle I do not need a touchpad. When I type or do something at the keyboard, I often accidentally touch the touchpad with the surface of my palm and pressings are triggered (for example, text may be highlighted, the cursor may jump, etc.).

How can I turn it off? On my laptop, there is no special key on the keyboard, in the mouse settings. also nothing. Sob sob.

Yes, such a problem can be annoying. In this article I will try to give several working methods that will help solve your problem (by the way, I suspect that you do not have drivers installed on the touchpad, therefore there is nothing in the mouse settings).

Ways to disable the touchpad

special function key

Many laptops have a special function key that allows you to quickly enable / disable the touchpad (it has a characteristic icon on it).

I will list the main brands of laptops and give the most common way to disable the touchpad:

  • ASUS: usually a combination of FnF9 (or FnF7) buttons. See photo below ();
  • Acer: FnF7 (or in the properties of the mouse);
  • Dell: most often the sensor is disabled in the properties of the mouse;
  • MSI: FnF3 combination;
  • Lenovo: FnF5 or FnF8;
  • HP: Note that on HP notebooks, double-tap the upper left corner of the touchpad to disable it (see photo below).
  • Sony: a combination of FnF1 (this brand’s laptops also have their own Control Center, which also has a similar option);
  • Samsung: in the vast majority of laptops FnF5;
  • Toshiba: most often a combination of FnF5 (also laptops of this brand have an option to disable the sensor in the mouse properties).

Warning about alternative touchpad disable button

If the function key is triggered, usually, a notification always appears on the screen that the sensor has been disabled (see the screenshot below).

using the properties of the mouse

If there is no function key, then almost certainly the option to disable the touchpad should be in the mouse settings (or in special software, such as Sony, Dell).

Open Windows Control Panel, Hardware and Sound / Devices and Printers / Mouse section.

Opening Mouse Properties / Windows Control Panel

Further, if you have installed drivers, the parameters should contain either a link to the control panel of your mouse, or the necessary options right in this window. For example, drivers for Synaptics touchpads allow you to put a very convenient checkbox right in this window:

  • disable internal pointing device when connecting external pointing device to USB.

Those. as soon as you connect the mouse to the USB port, your touchpad will stop working. Very comfortably!

By the way, please note that in some laptops, the touchpad is disabled in the Windows Mobility Center.

If you don’t have a function key, there is no special. There are no software (some kind of Control Center) and in the properties of the mouse there are no touchpad parameters, most likely, you simply do not have drivers installed on the touchpad.

I recommend checking and updating the drivers, the best utilities for this are here: https://ocomp.info/update-drivers.html

Or, use the methods below.

for Windows 10. we use the parameters of touch devices

If you have Windows 10, then there are special options in the parameters. the section responsible for the operation of the touch device.

To open these settings, go to START and click on the “Options” button (you can also use the Wini combination).

disable the touchpad in the device manager

Many devices (including the touchpad) can be disabled via device Manager.

The easiest way to open it (in Windows 7 ÷ 10): go to control panel, and add the word “Dispatcher” to the search bar. The search results will contain a link to launch it (see screen below ).

Open the device manager by searching in the control panel

In Device Manager, expand the Mice and Other Pointing Devices tab. One of the pointing devices is the touchpad. If it is difficult (impossible) to navigate by the name, then turn off each of them one by one until you find the one you need.

Disable Device / Device Manager

manual option. put a piece of cardboard / paper

Well, the last option is to cut out a piece of thick paper (made of cardboard, for example) to the size of the touchpad and glue this area with it (without glue!

The method, although clumsy, will avoid accidental clicks when touching the palms.

We use third-party software

If the methods described above do not work or you want a more versatile tool for managing the touchpad, then you can use third-party utilities. Consider one such.

Via software. Synaptics drivers and others

If you have installed the drivers / software for the touchpad on your laptop, then in 99% of cases a special icon will appear in the taskbar tray to control it.

Double click on it to open the settings, this is where you disable the touchpad. If the drivers are in Russian, then the button will be called “Disable”, if in English, then “Disable” (see the picture example above).

In Synaptics. Windows 7

In Windows 10 settings

Press the WIN I keys on the keyboard at the same time and in the parameters go to the “Devices” section.

In the left column, open the “Touch Panel” section and disable the item of the same name in the right column. You can also turn it back on, only the slider needs to be set to the active position.

How to disable the touchpad on a laptop

In BIOS

You need to open the BIOS, to do this, turn off the laptop and turn it on again. When the text appears on a black background or the logo of the laptop itself, press the DEL key until the BIOS appears.

Next, you need to act depending on which version of BIOS is installed. Go to the advanced settings “Advanced”, find there the item for working with the touchpad “Internal Pointing Device” and disable it. set it to the “Disabled” position. Then press the F10 key and save the settings. The laptop will boot with a non-working touchpad.

If you need to turn it back on, then do the same, just set the value to “Enabled”.

Task Manager

The touchpad is also turned off using the device manager. You can enter it either by simultaneously pressing Win and X and selecting the appropriate item in the drop-down list, or by typing the command devmgmt.msc in the input line of the Run dialog box. The latter is invoked by the WinR keyboard shortcut.

In Device Manager, the touchpad can be found under the Mice and Pointing Devices category or the HID Devices category. Finding the device is pretty easy: words like touchpad or sensing pad in the name indicate it. It can be hidden behind the phrase “USB input device”, but in any case it will not be difficult to find it. After that, you need to right-click on the name and select the “Disable device” item in the window that appears. Another option is to click the name of the touchpad with the left mouse button and disable it in the “Driver” tab.

How to disable the touchpad on a laptop when connecting a mouse?

Sometimes it is necessary to disable the touchpad of a laptop. Your attention is offered 4 ways, using which you can do this.

Hotkeys

The touchpad can be turned off by simultaneously pressing the Fn key and one of the F-row keys. Which one depends on the manufacturer and the specific model of the laptop, but there is a hint. an icon in the form of a crossed-out touchpad. If there is no such icon, you can search for the desired button yourself. However, below are the keyboard shortcuts for the most popular brands:

  • Samsung: FnF5;
  • Acer: FnF7;
  • ASUS: FnF8 or F7;
  • Lenovo: FnF5 or F8;
  • Sony: FnF1, Assist;

In HP notebooks, the touchpad is disabled not by hotkeys, but by a double quick tap or long press of the upper left corner of the panel itself;

This method is not applicable to all laptop models. If it turned out to be useless in your case, then you should try other means.

Automatically turn off the touchpad when you turn on the USB mouse

A method that is interesting in that it allows you to do everything once and forget about the problem for a long time. To configure the operating system to automatically disable the touchpad, follow these steps:

Open Control Panel or Settings. This can be done in different ways:

by typing control at the command line of the Run dialog box. You can call it, as noted earlier, with the WinR key combination;
By right-clicking on the “Start” button or by simultaneously pressing WinX to open a list in which one of the items will be “Control Panel” or “Settings”;

Go to the “Devices and Printers” category if the “Control Panel” was opened using the “Run” window. If you prefer another option, then you can go directly to step 3.

Find the touchpad and the mouse in the list of devices by clicking on this item, select the USB-mouse connection parameters and check the box next to “The touchpad is automatically disabled”.

It is worth saying that in the latest update of Windows 10, instead of the ability to automatically turn off the touchpad, there was a setting for its sensitivity levels. Low values of this characteristic, perhaps, will make it possible to work comfortably on the keyboard without disabling the touch panel.

BIOS

The most inconvenient of the methods proposed in the article, since it requires shutting down or restarting the laptop. But in some cases, only it can work: this is how the author of the article managed to turn off the touchpad on the ASUS X552M with its help.

Entering the BIOS on laptops from different manufacturers is performed differently. Below are the options for the keys you need to press when turning on your laptop, from most to least common:

  • Samsung: F2, F8, F12, DEL or Fn combination F row key;
  • Acer: F1, F2, CtrlAltEsc; for Acer Aspire CtrlF2; for Extensa and TravelMate F2, Del series;
  • Asus: F2, Del, F9;
  • Lenovo: F2, FnF2, F8, Del;
  • Sony: Vaio series Assist key; old models F1, F2, F3, Del;
  • HP: F10, Esc; older models: Del, F1, F11, F8;
  • Dell: F2, F1, F10, Del, Esc, Insert;

After entering the BIOS, using the arrows on the keyboard, go to the “Advanced” tab, select “Internal pointing device” in the list that opens. this is the touchpad. To turn it off, you need to press Enter and use the arrows to select the item “Disabled”, then. again “Enter”. Exit the BIOS, saving all changes, you can press the F10 key.

The above methods for turning off the touchpad are not the only ones, but they are the most accessible. We hope that the information presented in the article will be useful for you.

Lenovo

Lenovo laptops use different key combinations to disable, most commonly Fn F5 and Fn F8. On the desired key, you will see the corresponding icon with a crossed out touchpad.

You can also use Synaptics preferences to change how your touchpad works.

For Acer notebooks, the most typical key combination is Fn F7, as in the image below.

Windows Mobility Center

For some laptops, such as Dell, disabling the touchpad is available in the Windows Mobility Center, which can be opened from the menu by right-clicking on the battery icon in the notification area.

So, with the methods that assume the presence of all the manufacturer’s drivers are finished. Now let’s move on to what to do, there are no original drivers for the touchpad.

How to disable touchpad in Windows 10 settings

If your laptop has Windows 10 installed, and also has all the original drivers for the touchpad (touchpad), then you can disable it using the system settings.

  • Go to Settings. Devices. Touchpad.
  • Set the switch to Off.

Here, in the parameters, you can enable or disable the function of automatically turning off the touchpad when the mouse is connected to the laptop.

Mouse settings

Another method to turn off the touchpad on HP notebooks is to use the mouse settings and is available in all operating systems. In this case, the parameters may be absent, if, for example, the driver for the device in question has not been downloaded and installed before.

    In any convenient way, open the classic “Control Panel”, guided by the appropriate instructions on one of the following links.

Read more: Open Control Panel in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10

Being in the indicated window, find and click on the “Mouse” block. Please note that in the “Category” view, the desired item will be located in the “Hardware and Sound” subsection.

In the case of Windows 10, you can go directly to the touchpad settings through the “Settings”. To do this, you just need to use the link “Additional parameters” in the category “Related parameters”.

Click the Device Settings tab or, for some models, ClickPad Settings. To deactivate, press the “Disable” or “D” button on the keyboard and make sure that the “Yes” status next to the touchpad in the “Devices” block has changed to “No”.

To save the new settings, click “Apply” or immediately “OK” at the bottom of the window. Check the touchpad immediately afterwards to see if it works.

As a kind of alternative, you can check the “Disable internal pointing device when connecting an external pointing device to the USB port” checkbox. As in the previous case, this will allow the touchpad to turn off on its own when a mouse is detected.

Control Panel

If you are using an HP laptop with Windows 10, you can complete this procedure through the System Settings, using individual settings aimed at controlling the touch panel. It is important to note that the options will be fully available only if there is an up-to-date and fully compatible version of the touchpad driver, which, as a rule, is downloaded and installed manually.

    Right-click on the Windows logo on the taskbar and select “Options” from the presented menu. Alternatively, you can use other methods of opening the desired section.

To deactivate the touchpad, you need to go to the “Touchpad” tab through the menu on the left side of the window and left-click on the “On” slider in the block of the same name. As a result, the status will change to “Off”, indicating that the function is disabled.

If you often use your laptop without a mouse and do not want to constantly change settings, uncheck the box next to “Do not disconnect the touchpad when connecting a mouse.” This will automatically deactivate the touchpad as soon as a suitable external device is found.

After making changes, you should immediately check the functionality of the touch panel, since the settings are saved automatically. However, in the absence of the required results, we still recommend that you reboot the system.

Hotkey

On the vast majority of HP laptops, the main method of disabling the touchpad is to press a special button, usually located separately from the keyboard and marked with a special icon. Also, an alternative to such a key can be the area on the touch panel itself, located in the upper left corner.

In addition to the above, as in many other laptops, you can deactivate the built-in pointing device by pressing a certain key combination, which necessarily includes “FN”. The other button is usually located in the row of F-keys and should be indicated by the touchpad symbol.

If you cannot find the shutdown icon in one place or another, you should read the operating instructions, which you can easily find on the Internet. As a last resort, you can use other deactivation methods presented below.

BIOS

Many HP notebooks can also deactivate the touchpad through the BIOS. To do this, open the specified section, guided by the corresponding instructions on the site, and through the main menu go to the “Advanced” tab.

Find and select the item “Internal Pointing Device”, as a rule, it does not differ in the name regardless of the specific model of the device. After that, change the value to “Disabled” and press the “F10” key followed by confirmation to save the parameters and exit the BIOS.

Removing the driver

The last default method of disabling the touchpad is to uninstall the driver through Device Manager. It is worth noting here that this solution leads to the deactivation of the touchpad only in rare cases, since even in the absence of a driver, the device continues to work.

    Right click on the Start icon on the taskbar and go to Device Manager.

In the window of the same name, find and expand the list “Mice and other pointing devices”. After that, from the list presented, select the touchpad, which always has the signature “PS / 2” in the name.

Go to the Driver tab and click Uninstall device. This action will need to be confirmed through a pop-up window.

You can immediately check if the touch panel works, because the shutdown occurs immediately. If the device is still functioning, in your case, the method may be considered irrelevant.

Please note that even if the deactivation is successful, the touchpad will return to the list and will still work after restarting the laptop. To prevent this from happening, you will have to use other methods.

Third Party Programs

Today, there are separate programs for Windows that allow you to forcibly block the touchpad without harm to the device itself. As an example, we will consider Touchpad Blocker, which works properly on HP laptops, regardless of the model.

    Open the program website and download using the Download button. After that, from the list of downloaded files, select the installer you just received.

Install the utility following the standard guidelines. You don’t need to change anything in the process.

When finished, launch Touchpad Blocker and check the “Automatically run program on startup” checkbox to block it immediately upon system startup. The touchpad itself can be deactivated by enabling the “Enabled / Disable touchpad” option and then pressing the “CTRLALTF9” keys.

These buttons can be easily reassigned using the adjacent text box. Also, if necessary, you can use other program options aimed at blocking pointing devices.
