How to disable the touchpad on a laptop

The touchpad is an integral part of any mobile computer: laptop or netbook. If in an ordinary desktop an ordinary mouse plays its role, then in laptops, which are a wearable device, it is not always convenient to take a “rodent” with you. The touchpad is located just below the keyboard and is a touchpad. Laptops usually have touchpads from the 3 most popular manufacturers: Elan, Synaptic or Alps.

Disabling the touchpad

Why disable the touchpad? If you are used to using a mouse, then the touchpad can ruin your life significantly, especially if you type a lot or play games. You can accidentally touch it with your hand, which causes involuntary movement of the cursor.

For example, I use a laptop at home, which takes up less space. At the same time, the laptop is at my place and it is more convenient for me to work with a mouse. Accordingly, always turn off the touch.

The first way.

Quite versatile, but not applicable to all laptops. If you look closely, you can find a small touch button in the form of a luminous pixel on the touch panel. this is the sensor switch. But I repeat that not everyone has such a button.!

Second way.

common, but there is also a nuance here. Almost all laptops (netbooks) have a key for calling an additional function. It looks like this:

It is with its help that you can turn off the touch panel. This is done SIMply. you need to hold down the fn key and SIMultaneously press one of the additional function keys located at the top of the keyboard (F1. F12).

Here are some examples of how to disable the touchpad for different manufacturers, in laptops:

It is also possible that the user wants to enable the touchpad with one of the above hotkeys, but nothing comes out. This may be because your device has the feature to automatically disable the touchpad when a mouse is connected.

The most difficult

, in my opinion, you can name the way in which you need to remove the laptop (netbook) lid and disconnect the cable, which is connected directly to the touchpad.

Please note that the location of the same cable is also different in different models.

Key combinations to enable (disable) touchpads for the most common laptop models

  • Acer. in order to enable or disable the touchpad, press the FN F7 keys SIMultaneously
  • Asus. in laptops from this Taiwanese manufacturer, the touchpad is turned off with FN F9
  • Lenovo. Touchpad in Lenovo laptops is turned off by SIMultaneous pressing FN F8 keys

Well, one more way,

It is also not easy. it is to disable the touch panel directly from the BIOS. To do this, you need to enter the BIOS, in the “Advanced” tab, find the “Internal Pointing Device” item, change the value to “Disabled”.

Of course, there are a number of programs on the Internet with which you can turn off and configure the touch panel of your laptop or netbook, but it seems to me that in this case, installing additional software will be superfluous.

Using Synaptics Settings in Control Panel

Many laptops (but not all) use the Synaptics touchpad and related drivers. Most likely, your laptop too.

In this case, you can configure the touchpad to turn off automatically when the mouse is connected via USB (including wireless). For this:

  • Go to the control panel, Make sure that “View” is set to “Icons” and not “Categories”, open the item “Mouse”.
  • Open the Device Settings tab with the Synaptics icon.

On this tab, you can customize the behavior of the touchpad, as well as a choice:

If you cannot disable the touchpad using the described method, most likely the necessary drivers are missing on the PC. In this case, either download and install them from the manufacturer’s official website, or go to other options.

Via control panel in mouse properties

Many modern laptops are equipped with touchpads manufactured by Synaptics. If so, you will most likely have a special driver installed in the system, and in the mouse properties window there will be a special tab “Device Settings” marked with a characteristic red icon. Open Mouse Properties through the Settings app or the Classic Control Panel.

Switching to the tab (if any) “Device settings”, select the device you do not need, in this case the touchpad, and Disable it with the appropriate button.

Yes, you can also choose the middle option, set the checkbox to “Disable internal pointing device when connecting an external pointing device to the USB port.” This action activates the function to automatically disable the touchpad when a mouse is connected to the laptop. Again, this all assumes that the PC has the correct drivers. Now let’s see how to disable the touchpad on a laptop if they are not there.

Disable touchpad in BIOS

If you are looking for how to disable the touchpad on a laptop without using system settings and programs, do it at the hardware level. through the BIOS. On most laptop models, you enter the BIOS by pressing and holding the F2 or Del keys. The interface of different models of laptop BIOS may differ, but as a rule, the option responsible for disabling / enabling the touchpad is called “Internal Pointing Device” and is located in the “Advanced” section.

Laptop manufacturers are trying to make touchpads as comfortable as possible, but none of them is yet capable of replacing the most common computer mouse in terms of convenience.

over, in some cases it becomes a hindrance. When typing, the user accidentally touches it with his fingers or palm, which causes the cursor to move on the screen, highlights unnecessary elements at the moment, and the like. Therefore, some users are looking for ways to disable the touchpad so that the latter does NOT interfere with their work. There are several ways to do this, and now we will consider them in turn.

Using third-party programs

And finally, one more way to disable the touchpad. There are special utilities for THESE purposes. There are few of them and some of them may NOT work on older versions of Windows. The most popular of these is Touchpad Blocker. After installation, this small free program settles in the system tray, automatically block accidental clicks on the touch panel.

In the Touchpad Blocker settings, you can enable autoload, set the time for blocking the touchpad and set the necessary “hot” keys for this.

Touchfreeze is a touchpad blocking utility used before Windows XP. It is highly unlikely that it will work on Windows 7/10, but you can try it as an option. The utility is completely only on any settings, it is included in the work immediately after installation. You can close it from the system tray.

Touchpad Pal. SIMilar in functionality to the TouchFreeze program, it only disables the touchpad when you enter text. Settings only on, controlled from the notification area.

If you are not satisfied with the tools described above, try installing the Synaptics TouchPad Driver. In theory, after installing it in the properties of the mouse, you should have an additional tab “Device settings”, and in it. tools for controlling the touch panel. By and large, the TouchPad Driver serves the same purpose as the Microsoft Windows touchpad driver, but it also offers a number of additional features, including touchpad disabling, three-finger control, rotation and some other features.

How to disable the touchpad on a laptop

For those who do not quite understand what a laptop touch-pad is, we will tell you. The touchpad is a wonderful touch device that is designed specifically for laptops.

The touchpad technology is based on a fairly SIMple capacitive sensor that reacts to the touch of your fingers. The touchpad is bundled with laptops, netbooks and ultrabooks. The touchpad is used to manipulate the cursor, just like a computer mouse is done on conventional computers. In Apple’s MacBooks, the touchpad is called the trackpad;).

How to disable touchpad in laptop

There are many laptop manufacturers on the market today: Samsung, ASUS, Sony, Acer, Apple, Compaq, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Toshiba, DELL, and a variety of other brands. Most of them use touchpads in their notebooks from Synaptics. We did not even consider the touchpad as an advantage in the article on how to choose the right laptop, since this component of the laptop should be present and work like a clock. Let’s figure out how to disable the touchpad on a laptop.

Oddly enough, sometimes disabling the touchpad on a laptop is easier than enabling it. Depending on the laptop model, the touchpad may be disabled in different ways. By the way, the netbook does not differ from the laptop with a touchpad. Most modern laptops have several options for disabling the touchpad. Here are how many ways you can think of and implement to disable:

  • If you touch the touchpad, you can SIMply close it for a while, with something flat, such as a card or letter of paper.
  • Some laptops, such as Hewlett Packard laptops, have a special button that blocks the touchpad.
  • If such buttons are comments, then your laptop can understand a special key combination. Among the buttons from F1 to F12 there should be a key responsible for disabling the touchpad. You need to find this key and use it in combination with Fn. For Dell laptops, these are FnF5 keys, for ASUS they are FnF9, Acer. FnF7, Lenovo. FnF8.

You can try disabling the touchpad using Windows. To do this, do the following:

“Start”. “Control Panel”. “Mouse”. “Device parameters”. TouchPad Enable / Disable tab. Will put the switch in the “Disable” position.

Or you can do this in Windows XP:

“My computer”. “Control”. “Device Manager”. “Mice and other pointing devices.” And disable the device.

You can completely disable the touchpad on a laptop in the BIOS. How to enter the laptop BIOS can be found here. In the BIOS itself, in order to disable the sensor, you need to find the Internal Pointing Device item and put “Disable”.

For the correct operation of the touchpad in the Windows operating system, a special program for the touchpad is usually responsible. Most manufacturers in their laptops use touchpads from Synaptics (a couple more competitors are ALPS and Elantech). The software for the touchpad is called Synaptics Pointing Device Driver. To find the options for this program, you can find it in the tray. And you can once again follow the following standard path (for Windows 7) to the mouse settings:

“Start”. “Control Panel”. “Mouse”. “Properties: Mouse”. Device Settings Tab

Finding the desired program tab is not difficult:

As you can see, to disable the touchpad, you need to check the “Disable internal pointing device when connecting an external pointing device to the USB port” checkbox. Then when you connect the mouse, the touch pad will be disabled.

In some versions of this program for the touchpad, the developers for some reason removed this useful item. First, try to tell the new version of the program from the official website of the developer. If the new program did not help, and the daw did not appear, you need to edit the Windows registry. Newbies can read how to open the registry here. In any case, if you decide to rule anything in the registry, you should be careful. So, if there are checkmarks, do the following:
