- the smartphone itself, without which this procedure loses all meaning;
- USB cable included in the basic set of equipment;
- other communication device, including a PC, laptop, and in some cases even a tablet.
Additionally, you may need a special application for communication, but in most cases users can do without it, since the system installed on the smartphone is theoretically ready for connection in advance.

Review of Huawei FreeBuds 3. Design, usability and hardware features
The round case is made of glossy plastic. It is medium in size. more compact than the Sony WF-1000XM3, but slightly larger than the case of Apple Airpods or Xiaomi AirDots:
When closed, there is a slight backlash in the lid. about the same as on all Apple Airpods models. On the right side edge, the only button is hidden imperceptibly, with the help of which you can:
- Put the headphones into pairing mode (for connecting to smartphones and computers). To do this, just open the lid and, without removing the headphones, hold down this button for 2 seconds.
- Reset headphone settings to factory defaults. To do this, without removing the headphones, hold down the button for 7 seconds.
On the bottom there is a USB Type-C connector for charging. But it is not necessary to use it, since FreeBuds 3 support wireless charging according to the Qi standard (2 watts), including reversible charging from smartphones, and not only from Huawei. Specifically, the Samsung Galaxy Note10 charges Huawei FreeBuds 3 without any problems:
As you can see in the photo, there is a small LED indicator near the connector to display the charge of the case. You can find out the approximate charge of the headphones by the second LED indicator located inside the case under the lid:
The lid itself, when open, is securely fixed with magnets and does not dangle at all. The headphones are also held inside by rather strong magnets.
Huawei FreeBuds 3 are available in white and black:
It is worth noting that black is more easily soiled and collects fingerprints noticeably:
In general, the case is comfortable. It can be easily opened and closed with one hand and fits seamlessly into any
Headphones are made in the design of Apple Airpods. These are comfortable earbuds with a small “stem” (or stick) that holds microphones and a number of other elements. This is a very good design for using the device as a headset, since the microphones that pick up the voice and the noise canceling microphones are located far from each other.
Each earbud has an IR proximity sensor that automatically pauses music when you take it off and resumes when you put it back on. But this function works exclusively with Huawei smartphones. When connecting Huawei FreeBuds 3 to Galaxy Note 10, headphones ignore proximity sensors.
This is an artificial limitation that other manufacturers practice as well. By comparison, the proximity sensors in Apple’s headphones also work exclusively with Apple devices. So, do not expect a fix for this flaw in future firmware.
The ergonomics of the headphones are at a good level, they are quickly and conveniently inserted into the ears and securely held there due to their shape. Perhaps due to the peculiarities of the structure of the auricle, someone has these headphones and may fall out of their ears when playing sports, but in my case this is unrealistic.
We should also pay attention to the fact that Huawei FreeBuds 3 lacks moisture protection. That is, it is better not to use headphones when it rains and, possibly, during high-intensity workouts with profuse sweating.
The earbuds have neither buttons nor touchpads. All control takes place by tapping on the body, recorded by the accelerometer. Only one gesture is supported. double tap. What exactly should happen in this case can be configured in the proprietary Huawei AI Life application, available only for Android smartphones:
In my opinion, triple touch is sorely lacking here. For example, the left earphone is set to activate / deactivate noise cancellation, and the right one is set to switch tracks. In this case, it is impossible to pause the melody. Owners of Huawei smartphones are easier in this regard, since their playback will be automatically paused when one of the headphones is removed. But no one can change the volume using headphones.
Again, iPhone users won’t be able to customize gestures at all or find out the exact charge of the case, since the AI Life app is not available on iOS.
How Huawei FreeBuds 3 works as a headset
I do not know if this was the main task of Huawei engineers, but it is precisely as a headset that the FreeBuds 3 headphones have no equal. The aforementioned models from Sennheiser, Xiaomi, Apple, and even more so Sony cannot be compared in terms of the quality of communication during a telephone conversation.
Your voice will be audible even on a noisy street or in windy conditions. The headphones are very good at suppressing all ambient sound and clearly reproduce the voice. Most likely, many factors played a role here. these are the holes for the microphones hidden in the “legs” with the aerodynamic design, and the high-quality work of noise reduction, and also a special vibration sensor.
This sensor detects vibration in the jaw joint that occurs during conversation. Accordingly, the headphones amplify the sound that occurs at the moment of vibration and simultaneously suppress all sounds that are picked up by external noise canceling microphones.
In general, it all really works and it is a great pleasure to use Huawei FreeBuds 3 as a headset.
And the last thing I would like to mention is the audio lag when watching YouTube or videos on Netflix. Here it is completely absent or simply not felt. You can even play games like Clash Royale with headphones. Although in PUBG, the audio lag is quite noticeable (when connecting headphones to the Galaxy Note10).
Huawei FreeBuds 3 Codecs
Now for the codecs. In fact, FreeBuds 3 only supports 2 codecs: SBC and AAC. over, the SBC codec on FreeBuds 3 only supports the Middle Quality profile, and its maximum bitrate is limited to 229 kbps. This is very bad, so with FreeBuds 3 it is better to always use the AAC codec.
During the presentation of Huawei FreeBuds 3, it was announced about support for a new proprietary codec or even the Bluetooth Ultra High-Definition Audio (BT-UHD) protocol, but there is nothing like this on Huawei FreeBuds 3.
That is, the new Kirin A1 chip installed in Huawei FreeBuds 3 really supports all of this, but these capabilities have not yet been implemented in the product itself (perhaps it is a matter of time).
But you shouldn’t be upset about this, just as it makes no sense to expect support for the proprietary HWA codec or the work of BT-UHD. Despite common misconceptions, none of this will drastically change the sound quality of FreeBuds 3, and here’s why.
Subjective assessment of sound
Before reading my assessment of the sound, I highly recommend reading the article “Ah, this subjective sound!”.
Huawei FreeBuds 3 sounds just great! But, only if you compare them with other in-ear headphones or budget in-ear models.
First of all, there is a lot of bass here, especially when listening to music in a quiet room. The company even placed a special tube to amplify the low frequencies. And this is noticeable. True, on a noisy street or in transport, the bass is no longer felt so well, but, nevertheless, I don’t remember that there were so many low frequencies in some earbuds.
High and middle frequencies sound good, unpleasant sibilants do not appear at maximum volume. If we compare the sound with one of the cheapest in-ear TWS headphones. Xiaomi Redmi AirDots, then the tops here will seem not so clear and bright, but on Xiaomi this “sonority” often results in sibilance. On FreeBuds 3, the sound is smoother, apart from the slightly bulging bass. No built-in equalizer.
Again, the sound quality of FreeBuds 3 is not bad. But, unfortunately, it makes no sense to compare them with the Sony WF-1000XM3 or Sennheiser Momentum TW music headphones. They don’t stand up to scrutiny. There is a poor separation of instruments, and the scene itself is not. The detailing of bass, mids and highs is also noticeably inferior to the mentioned models, especially when compared directly.
If you had the pleasure of using the aforementioned headphones from Sony or Sennheiser, and also understand what exactly the codecs affect, then you should understand why Hi-Fi codecs, even if they appear on FreeBuds 3 with future updates, will not play a big role. The problem is not in the lossy compressed files, but in the headphones themselves (their design, quality of speakers, DAC, DSP).
And if you listen to music through streaming services (YouTube Music, Google Music, Apple Music, Spotify), then it makes no sense to talk about codecs at all, since even an AAC codec will be more than enough to transmit a signal with a low bit rate without the slightest loss.
In any case, Huawei FreeBuds 3, like any other “earbuds”, does not claim to be a Hi-Fi headphone at all. If I choose between Apple Airpods 2 and Huawei FreeBuds 3, I would prefer the latter. Especially when combined with an Android smartphone.
How noise cancellation works on Huawei FreeBuds 3?
As mentioned at the beginning, Huawei FreeBuds 3 are the first in-ear headphones with active noise canceling. Active noise control, of course, can be found in many models, for example:
However, all of these headphones are in-ear, that is, they isolate the channel from the penetration of external sounds. This is the main condition for active noise cancellation. The ear canal should be isolated and the better, the better the noise reduction will work.
What did Huawei do? Firstly, noise cancellation really works and it is noticeable. Here, the noise reduction is more aggressive than on the aforementioned Sony WF-1000XM3, as it tries to dampen all sounds, not just low-frequency noise. But due to the open type of the headphones themselves, noise cancellation is not as effective (and effective) as on the model from Sony or Airpods Pro.
Interestingly, if we compare the quality of the ANC with the in-ear Xiaomi Air Mi True Wireless, then in FreeBuds 3 it works even better.
The FreeBuds 3 noise suppressor completely removes the noise of winter tires on cars, also slightly muffles the sound of engines, including when you are driving. Unfortunately, I was not able to test the ANC operation in an airplane during the testing of the headphones. But when exercising on a treadmill, the noise reduction is very noticeable and makes jogging much more comfortable.
In general, this function is not just “for show” here, it really works, although it is far from being as interesting and effective as on in-channel models. In addition, on the latest firmware, I noticed a strange behavior of the noise control. sometimes it just turns off after a short time.
The principle of operation of noise cancellation is very simple. with the help of microphones, headphones pick up all external sounds, and then play them in antiphase. That is, the rise of a wave of one signal (noise coming from the outside) coincides with the decay of a wave of another signal (external noise played in antiphase). Because of this, the effect of damping the sound wave occurs:
Ideally, the sound should disappear completely, but in practice, it is difficult to achieve this effect even with full-size headphones, such as the Sony WH-1000XM3 (not to be confused with the in-ear WF-1000XM3).
The quality and strength of noise canceling on FreeBuds 3 can be adjusted in the AI Life app:
This is a fairly rare occurrence. There is nothing like this on the Airpods Pro, the Sony WF-1000XM3 or the aforementioned headphones from Xiaomi. Turning the wheel, the character and strength of the noise switch changes, and in the position from 12 to 18 (if we imagine that the wheel is a clock) ANC works in the opposite mode. it amplifies external sounds, and from 18:00 to 12:00 it suppresses.
Review of Huawei FreeBuds 3. The first of its kind
Despite all the difficulties that Huawei has faced lately, the company continues to delight all fans of mobile technologies with new products. It’s hard to disagree with the fact that Huawei is one of the most exciting companies in terms of technology today.
Wireless reversible charging Huawei Mate 20 Pro; 5x optical zoom and prohibitively high working ISO on the Huawei P30 Pro camera phone; tracking sleep phases on Huawei / Honor trackers based on the principle of cardio-respiratory monitoring is not a complete list of everything that has been invented by the company over the past few years.
And today we will talk about another small innovation. the world’s first in-ear headphones Huawei FreeBuds 3 with Active Noise Canceling (ANC).
Does it make sense to use ANC on earbuds? What codecs are supported and why is the new Kirin A1 processor needed? How do the new headphones sound, after all? I will try to answer all these and many other questions in as much detail as possible in this review.
How Huawei FreeBuds 3 works
Both earbuds connect directly to the smartphone, unlike many other models that work on the slave-master principle. This allows for a slight decrease in audio latency, and also completely eliminates the problem when one of the headphones “falls off” and stops playing. This can sometimes be found when connecting a slave-master, when both channels are first sent to the right earphone, and only then the right one sends one of the channels to the left.
Huawei FreeBuds 3 can be used individually or together. If you connect only one of the headphones and turn on the music, then the second will automatically connect as soon as you take it out of the case.
The speed of connecting headphones to a smartphone is simply phenomenal. In this parameter, FreeBuds 3 surpasses all the headphones that we had on the test earlier, including the Airpods Pro in conjunction with the iPhone. Most likely, such a quick reaction occurs due to the fact that the headphones work constantly, even while in the case. That is, they go into low power mode and do not turn off completely.
Something similar could be seen on the Sennheiser Momentum TW. Hi-Fi headphones that could completely drain their battery and case battery in a week, even if you never used them.
Self-discharge of the case is also present here. If you fully charge the case and headphones, then after 24 hours the case will lose about 10% of its charge, even if you have not touched the device.
Wired connectivity, while simple enough, still has a few basic features. The fact is that for some types of headsets, you can use more than one output, but two. The first is designed to output sound directly to the headphones, and the second is used to connect a microphone. But how to turn on headphones for a laptop if it has only one input, and the headset has two wires?
In this case, you can use special adapters, which does not always give the desired effect, but it is better to install an external sound card. Ultrabooks can also have internal sound cards (but not an integrated type) similar to those usually found in stationary system units. In this case, the connection is simplified by itself. Headphones for a laptop with a plug in the form of a standard jack can also be connected.
Again, this requires a special mini-jack adapter.
We connect headphones to the laptop ourselves: visual instructions
Such versatile devices combine wired and wireless communication. The owner can choose the most convenient way for himself: connect “over the air” or use a familiar interface.
REFERENCE. The wire is often detachable. On one side it connects to the accessory, on the other to the laptop. Errors are excluded here: the cable is supplied with the same lugs (or a smaller port is provided on the headset side). It can be 3.5 mini jack or USB.
Sound settings using Windows 10 as an example
One of the most frequent problems of many users, as they say, is terribly simple. It so happens that when connecting headphones or headsets, users simply do not pay attention to the volume control. The problem is that when you change the playback device, when it is activated instead of the main one, the sound level may turn off. To do this, first check the status of the corresponding control on the mixer (and for all currently active applications that use sound circuits). Generally, for any type of microphone, the input level is best set to half the volume and no gain at all.
But questions about how to turn on the sound in headphones on a laptop can have another solution, which is to select your model of headphones or headset from the list in playback devices, and then set it to the default (it should a green circle with a check mark appears). After that, you can perform a sound check directly in the same section using the operating system tools.
The simplest and most common are wired headphones. They are connected via a cable to the corresponding connectors on a computer or laptop. There may actually be several options here. For example, if you have a headset with one wire, and your computer has 2 inputs (pink and green), then you need to purchase a special adapter. Thanks to him, both speakers and a microphone will work in your headphones. The opposite situation (when the headphones have two plugs, and on the laptop only one input) is solved by another adapter.
In all other situations, when the number of plugs is the same, simply insert them into the correct jacks. On a laptop, as a rule, the microphone and headphone jacks are located on the side panel. Green is the headphones, pink is the microphone. Additionally, next to the entrance there is a small image for recognition.
After connecting, check the sound (remember to turn up the volume on the system). If there is no sound, OS settings are required. This item will be discussed separately in the following sections.
This is the most common type of hardware. It can be with one or two plugs. This feature affects the way it is connected with a laptop.
The first option is that the headphones work through one output. The system broadcasts audio, additionally ensures the operation of the microphone built into the headset (if available).
This is the simplest scheme: just plug the connector into the audio port on the laptop case.
The second case. the device has two outputs.
According to accepted standards, the green plug is responsible for sound transmission. It connects to a PC through a connector of the corresponding color.
The pink color of the contact means the microphone function. Connects to an identical laptop socket.
The difficulty arises when only one port is detected on the PC (mini jack 3.5 mm).
In this case, the user has to buy a special adapter. Such a component supports both audio broadcast and microphone operation.
The sound quality when connected via an adapter may not be satisfactory to the user. In this case, purchasing an external sound card helps.
How to connect headphones to a laptop
We will consider the first connection option in more detail.
From laptop to smartphone
The process of transferring files in the opposite direction also occurs. over, if images are open on both the phone and the monitor of the stationary device, sending from the monitor is considered priority.
It is important to emphasize that the version of Windows the user is using is irrelevant. The program works equally well on Windows 7 and 10. If the smartphone does not connect to the PC, it is highly likely that the function is simply unavailable.
From smartphone to laptop
An important feature of the application is that the transfer process does not change, regardless of where the transfer is from. To send an item from a smartphone, you must complete all the above steps. If the program does not work, you need to make sure that the function is active and enable it, if necessary.
Connecting smartphone to laptop
To connect your phone to a laptop you will need:
- run the background PC Manager application on the laptop;
- turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi;
- additionally activate the NFC sensor on the smartphone;
- attach the sensor to the service icon on the laptop screen;
- wait for a characteristic sound signal confirming the reading of information;
- press the connect button on your mobile;
- log in to the system on a stationary device.
Viewing recently transferred documents
To view the last transferred files, you should use the program functionality. To do this, you need to complete only 2 actions:
- click on the service icon in the lower right corner;
- select the item of the same name in the menu that opens.
This feature, like everything else listed above, is provided free of charge.
File transfer via OneHop
The transfer process is almost the same as connecting. To use the service, you will need:
- open the file you want to download (text document, video, photo, image);
- re-bring the sensor to the screen;
- wait for a beep or vibration;
- wait until the object is moved.
The transmission rate is variable and depends on a variety of factors.
If you have any questions or complaints. let us know
Devices that support this function
At the moment, the described functionality is not supported by all the company’s equipment. You will be able to use the program:
- on smartphones with a built-in NFC sensor (exceptions are possible in some situations);
- MateBook series laptops (8 models).
Other devices do not allow sending and receiving files through the OneHop virtual service.
Transfer files using Huawei Share between Huawei and Honor smartphones
There are no obvious barriers to using the feature on Huawei and Honor devices. Both smartphones use the Android operating system, are products of the same company and have similar functionality. over, the manufacturer claims that different phone models have different software versions. Therefore, it will be possible to find out for sure whether the service is working only in a practical way.
How to use Huawei Share?
To use the application, you will need:
- turn on the program of the same name on the phone sending files (wi-fi and Bluetooth will turn on at the same time);
- activate the function on the smartphone receiving the data;
- select a file to send and click the “send” button;
- indicate in the list of available devices where the object should be sent;
- press “accept” on the receiving phone;
- wait for the transfer to complete.
Nothing extra is usually required.
