It happens that the errors found during scanning are not always possible to immediately fix, it is likely that this is due to the program running at that time. In this situation, an offline scan of the drive will be required: it is disconnected from work, diagnostics are carried out, and then it is connected back. To do this, enter into the command line “chkdsk C: / f / offlinescanandfix” (C:. disk partition). If it is not possible to disable it, then the check will be performed at the next reboot.

In many cases, the occurrence of problems in the operation of the hard drive is caused by the actions of a computer virus. Therefore, before using this or that hard disk testing software tool, as well as fixing the detected errors, it is recommended to scan the computer with an available antivirus program. It is highly desirable that the anti-virus databases in it were the most recent. As soon as all found viruses are removed from the PC, you can already start checking the hard drive. Using the command line
To perform the check, you need to perform the following steps: go through “Start” in the “All Programs” menu, then select “Standard” and find the “Command Line” section. Right-click and select “Administrator”.

The main reason lies in the boot sector, which was attacked by the virus, creating a constant restart cycle of the PC. The virus program forces the OS to access the boot sector and continually reboot the laptop. This can quickly damage the drive.
Fixing file system errors: using Windows tools
How do I test my PC hard drive for file system errors? For these purposes, as a rule, it is sufficient to apply the built-in Windows solutions. They are found in almost all modern versions of this operating system for desktops and laptops. The main one will be the “Check Disk” program or Chkdsk.
This solution can be used both through the graphical interfaces of the operating system and through the command line. The first option is usually easier for a novice user, while the second may require more skill in using Windows diagnostic tools.
To use the utility in question, you need to go to the “Computer” section, then right-click on the hard disk icon. There may be several of them, in this case it makes sense to check each one in turn. After right-clicking on the hard drive icon in the menu that opens, select the “Properties” option. In the window that appears, go to the “Service” tab. Then click on the “Check” button and follow the instructions.
In some versions of Windows, the utility in question is not configured to test logical drives that host OS system files. But in this case, the “Check Disk” program provides an option: initiation of testing the hard drive at the next boot of the operating system. You can select it and immediately restart Windows: during the startup process, the system itself must ask the user for permission to check the disk on which the system files are located.

How to check your hard drive for errors via the command line
To check the hard disk and its sectors for errors using the command line, you first need to run it, and on behalf of the Administrator. In Windows 8.1 and 10, you can do this by right-clicking the Start button and selecting Command Prompt (Admin). Other methods for other OS versions: How to run the command line as administrator.
In the command line, enter the command chkdsk drive_letter: check_parameters (if nothing is clear, read on). Note: Check Disk only works with disks formatted in NTFS or FAT32.
An example of a working command may look like this: chkdsk C: / F / R. this command will check the C drive for errors, and errors will be corrected automatically (F parameter), bad sectors will be checked and information recovery will be attempted (R parameter) Attention: checking with the parameters used can take several hours and it seems to “hang” in the process, do not perform it if you are not ready to wait or if your laptop is not connected to an outlet.
In case you try to check the hard drive that is currently in use by the system, you will see a message about this and offer to check after the next restart of the computer (before the OS is loaded). Enter Y to agree or N to refuse verification. In other cases, a check will be immediately launched, as a result of which you will receive statistics of the checked data, errors found and bad sectors (you should have it in Russian, unlike my screenshot).
You can get a complete list of available parameters and their descriptions by running chkdsk with a question mark as a parameter. However, for a simple check for errors, as well as for checking sectors, the command given in the previous paragraph will suffice.
In cases where the check finds errors on the hard drive or SSD but cannot fix them, it could be because a running Windows or programs are currently using the drive. In this situation, starting an offline scan of the disk can help: in this case, the disk is “disconnected” from the system, a check is performed, and then it is mounted again in the system. If you cannot disable it, then CHKDSK will be able to check the next time the computer is restarted.
To perform an offline disk check and fix errors on it, in the command line as an administrator, run the command: chkdsk C: / f / offlinescanandfix (where C: is the letter of the disk being checked).
If you see a message stating that the CHKDSK command cannot be executed because the specified volume is in use by another process, press Y (yes), Enter, close Command Prompt, and restart your computer. The disk check will start automatically when Windows 10, 8, or Windows 7 starts to boot.

Checking the hard drive in Windows Explorer
The easiest way to check HDD in Windows is to use File Explorer. In it, right-click on the required hard drive, select “Properties”, and then open the “Service” tab and click “Check”. Checking Disk for Errors in Windows PowerShell
You can check your hard drive for errors not only using the command line, but also in Windows PowerShell.
In order to complete this procedure, start PowerShell as administrator (you can start typing PowerShell in the search on the Windows 10 taskbar or in the Start menu of previous OS, then right-click on the found item and select “Run as administrator”.
In Windows PowerShell, use the following options for the Repair-Volume command to check the hard drive partition:
- Repair-Volume.DriveLetter C (where C is the letter of the drive being checked, this time without a colon after the drive letter).
- Repair-Volume.DriveLetter C. OfflineScanAndFix (similar to the first option, but to perform an offline scan, as described in the chkdsk method).
If, as a result of the command execution, you see the message NoErrorsFound, it means that no errors were found on the disk.
Additional options for checking disk in Windows 10
In addition to the options listed above, you can use some additional tools built into the OS. In Windows 10 and 8, disk maintenance, including checking and defragmenting them, occurs automatically on a schedule when you are not using your computer or laptop.
To view information about whether any problems with disks were found, go to the “Control Panel” (you can do this by right-clicking on Start and selecting the desired item in the context menu). “Security and Service Center”. Open the “Maintenance” section and in the “Disk Status” item you will see the information obtained as a result of the last automatic check.
Another feature introduced in Windows 10 is the Storage Diagnostic Tool. To use the utility, run Command Prompt as administrator, then use the following command:
Execution of the command will take some time (it may seem that the process is frozen), while all connected drives will be checked.
And after the completion of the command, a report on the identified problems will be saved in the location you specified.
The report includes separate files containing:
- Chkdsk check information and error information collected by fsutil in text files.
- Windows 10 registry files containing all current registry values related to connected drives.
- Windows Event Viewer log files (events are collected within 30 seconds when using the collectEtw key in the disk diagnostic command).
For an ordinary user, the collected data may not be of interest, but in some cases it may be useful to diagnose problems with the operation of drives by a system administrator or other specialist.

When after defragmentation 2.5 GB “disappeared”, the first thing I did was clean the disk in advanced mode with deleting restore points. I cleaned it with a regular tool through a conductor, so by definition I could not break anything in the system.
