How To Add Ram To A Laptop

How to increase RAM on a laptop in settings. How to increase RAM in Asus laptop.

Those who, due to professional activity or personal motives, quite often work on a laptop, fully understand that the speed of execution of many programs fully depends on the size of the RAM. It is for this reason that many PC owners are actively interested in how to increase the RAM on a laptop.

Adding “RAM” to a laptop will not take much time, but it will save waiting for programs to load.

The technical parameters of various laptops differ significantly, therefore, it is absolutely impossible to navigate and purchase RAM, which was acquired by someone from your acquaintances. In this regard, the first rule arises, which the owner must take into account when he wants to increase the RAM. It lies in the fact that it is important in advance to determine the type of already installed RAM module, its size, as well as the bus frequency.

Step-by-step instructions for increasing the amount of RAM in an Asus laptop

Example with installed RAM in the compartment under the bottom panel

1. Before installing additional memory, disconnect the laptop from the mains and the battery.

2. Unscrew the screws on the back of the laptop and remove the cover.

How To Add Ram To A Laptop

For reference. Some models provide additional installation of memory sticks. In fig. 1 you can see a free slot. If additional slots are not provided, it is necessary to replace the existing memory strip with another, larger one.

3. Place the memory strip into the slot at a 45-degree angle from the motherboard and snap into place, fig. 2

Further, all components are assembled in reverse order. After starting the operating system, the installed memory will be detected automatically.

Example with RAM installed under the keyboard

1. To access the memory, you must carefully remove the keyboard. To this end, unscrew the screws or release the latches that fix it.

2. Then gently lift the keyboard. If it is inconvenient to work further, you can disconnect the ribbon cable from the motherboard and remove the keyboard completely.

3. On the plate covering the RAM, it is necessary to Unscrew the screws, lift and carefully pull the memory bar out of the slot.

4. In the vacated slot, install another bar with a larger volume.

5. Reassemble everything in reverse order.

If the RAM is located under the motherboard

1. You must first remove the compartment with the drive. HDD or SSD disk, Unscrew the motherboard and disconnect all connectors from it.

2. On the back side, under a protective film, there is a memory slot.

3. Lift the film and replace the memory stick in the above way.

Attention ! This article is NOT a guide, instruction, etc. Here’s how to do it, not how to do it. Any handling of technology requires experience and knowledge. Read, Analyze, draw conclusions. And experimenting yourself or contacting specialists is your personal choice.

There are three types of RAM: DDR, DDR2, DDR3. The first DDRs Are not relevant and today only DDR2 and DDR3 are used

Any laptop or computer can only support one of THESE types. They differ in frequency, speed of data exchange and a cutout on the strap in the area of the contacts, so that an unintended type of memory cannot be inserted into the slot. You can find out what type of DDR is supported by your laptop from those. Passports, read the sticker on the memory module, which is already installed at the moment, or use one of the many programs that determine the technical characteristics of the computer. If you have any difficulties at this stage, then it is better to consult a specialist.

Remember that the amount of memory you can deliver also depends on the bitness of your processor. If you have a 32-bit processor and the corresponding operating system, then more than 3 GB of memory will not be used by the laptop. To avoid THESE restrictions, you need: 64-bit processor and 64-bit operating system.

Let’s go to practice.

To increase the amount of RAM, we need to install an additional module (purchased in advance) in a free slot. The question immediately arises: “Where to find this slot?” The memory slots are located on the motherboard of the laptop, usually on the bottom.
It happens that the slots are located on top (under the laptop keyboard). Let’s consider both options:

Option 1. Adding RAM if slots are on top.

Our guinea pig is the Asus A2500H laptop with DDR RAM. It has only 256 Mb of RAM and the memory slots are on the top. If you will perform SIMilar operations with a laptop yourself. make it a rule to first remove the battery.

Option 2. Adding RAM when slots are at the bottom.

Now let’s look at an easier way to add RAM, with the memory slots at the bottom. Take an Acer Aspire 5315 laptop with DDR II memory as an example. Here he is handsome:

Or here another example when located at the bottom.

Turn off the laptop and unplug the power supply.

This completes the installation. Close the compartment with the lid and screw back the screws. Insert the battery, connect the power and you can turn on the laptop.

To check the amount of RAM, right-click on the “My computer»And select properties. See the data of the item “Memory (RAM / RAM)“.

Of course, there are many different features in different laptop models. It so happens that both slots are free (there is built-in RAM), or vice versa: both slots are occupied by low-capacity modules. In rare cases, RAM can be located NOT at the bottom and NOT under the keyboard, but, for example, to the left of the touchpad. There are laptop models where one slot is on the bottom, the other on top.
Such a laptop upgrade is not difficult to do; it does not affect the removal of the laptop from warranty service. But if you still have doubts or just do not want an extra hassle. contact the specialists.

The need to know how to increase the RAM on a laptop appears in cases when the RAM already installed on the device is not enough to run the necessary games or programs.

With desktop PCs, this situation happens much less often than with portable ones.

If only because most of the characteristics of models of desktops and laptops with the same price differ markedly not in favor of the latter.

This is explained by the desire of laptop manufacturers to place everything as compactly as possible. and usually this is enough for the average user, who requires from the device, first of all, mobility, and not high performance.

It is easy to avoid such a problem. you just need to buy such a laptop, the memory of which will NOT have to be increased for another 3-4 years.

For example, such as MSI brand gaming models with 16-32 GB of memory.

True, their price will be at least 100-150 thousand rubles, which is unlikely to suit an ordinary user, who would prefer to increase the RAM of an existing computer better.

The first sign that it is time to change the memory are the messages that appear about the lack of RAM or completely non-starting games and useful programs.

This is especially noticeable if the laptop model is not the same and old, but applications are still needed, for example, for work.

Non-opening files do not necessarily mean that you will have to change the entire device.

There is a possibility that the problem can be eliminated by just adding 1-2 strips of RAM.

over, some devices have insufficient memory. for example, for a quad-core processor, the manufacturer can install only 4 GB, while the board supports both 8 and 16 GB.

Out of memory for Adobe Photoshop

Tip: When increasing memory, it is worth changing from 32-bit Windows to 64-bit. After that, the RAM will be used completely. If this is not done, the system will only use 3 GB of memory.

If this is not done, the system will only use 3 GB of memory.

The same applies to a 32-bit processor, but since they have not been produced for several years, the presence of such a COMPONENT requires replacing NOT the memory, but the entire computer.

Before buying memory and increasing it, you should check whether this can be done, as well as the type of RAM and the required number of strips.

Any computer, desktop or laptop, can be equipped with as many modules as there are specially designed slots for this.

You can determine this amount visually by disassembling the laptop and looking at what memory is already installed there, and how much you can put.

However, the issue can be solved in a SIMpler way. for example, I downloaded the free CPU-Z program, which will work both in Windows 7 and in later versions of the operating system.

The most convenient way is to find and download the application for free on the official website of its manufacturer, CPUID.

Determining memory parameters in different slots

After starting the program, a window with Multiple tabs will open. One of them, SPD, will help determine which slots on your laptop are occupied, what type and amount of memory is already installed.

The default slot number 1 shows the device parameter information.

For the given example, this is a 4 GB DDR3 RAM bar.

If two of the same boards are installed (for optimal operation, a paired arrangement is required, i.e. 2 or 4 of the same), and there are no other slots at all, a complete replacement will be required to increase the volume.

For example, I removed both 4-gigabyte strips, put two 8 GB in them. If only one slot is occupied, the same memory can be installed in the second.

Four connectivity spots on laptops are very rare.

There are other programs that can help you decide on the choice of memory.

Some of them will show Not only the parameters of the installed RAM and second components, but also the maximum amount of memory.

And special software can even PROVIDE information about possible installation options for the planks.

There are services that even contain links to pages with accessories, where you can find out the approximate cost of memory and assess your ability to increase it.

When buying a new RAM module, you should make sure if you can increase its frequency.

Some laptop motherboards allow DDR3 memory, for example, with data transfer rates from 1333 to 1866 million operations per second.

Others support already higher frequencies. up to 2400 MHz. You can find out which memory suits your device by looking at the information about the motherboard found on the network.

It is very important to resolve this issue in advance, since a module designed to operate on a different bus or larger volume than supported by a laptop will NOT work.

If the module does not change, but is added, its frequency and volume should coincide with the parameters of the already installed.

Although the device will be able to work with different bars, it will most likely be much slower. and there will be no great benefit from such a replacement.

For example, you will hardly notice an increase in performance when you add another 4 GB module installed in one slot, but already for 1-2 GB, although you will spend some time and money on this.

The cost of memory for laptops is currently almost the same as for a computer. However, it has a special slot size, half the size of PC connectors.

DDR3 Laptop RAM Module

Tip: if there are no RAM chips for your laptop on sale (for example, it supports the still outdated DDR2 type), you still need to decide whether to increase the memory, or it is better to buy a new gadget.

When the memory has already been selected and purchased, proceed to installing it on the laptop.

On some models like Asus, this will require removing the entire back cover and removing other elements that interfere with replacing or adding RAM.

Most often this applies to compact devices. mini-laptops and netbooks.

Most of the more modern devices allow you to replace and add a bar, spent no more than 2-3 minutes on it. To do this, you just have to:

  • Disconnect the device from the network;
  • Get out the battery;
  • Open the cover of the memory module compartment;
  • Remove old microcircuits (if they are changing), considering that they can be held by latches;
  • Install the new memory into the latch latches;
  • Replace the battery;
  • Close the lid.

Installing memory in a laptop

You can make sure that everything is done correctly after turning on Windows and checking the amount of installed RAM in the computer properties.

In the process of increasing memory, you should make sure that your actions do NOT violate the warranty for the new device.

In addition, if there is a back cover for quick access to RAM, it is worth Reading the instruction manual for this model.

Some Lenovo models even need to remove the hard disk for installation. Older laptops may require even more complex actions to access free slots.

For example, sometimes one and two planks are installed in different places.

There is also a SIMpler and more inexpensive option, how to increase the RAM of a laptop. moreover, without even opening its case and NOT buying new modules.

All that is required from the user is a free flash drive with a volume of 4-16 GB and installed Windows 7 or newer.

In principle, the same method is suitable for a stationary PC, the memory of which is not enough for any actions, or the speed of work is SIMply too low for the user’s purposes.

The main reasons for choosing a way to increase the RAM of a laptop using a flash drive can be:

  • Unwillingness to spend money on improving the equipment when replacing the device with a new one in the near future;
  • Lack of physical ability to install or replace a bar (outdated type of module, faulty slot, etc.);
  • The need to increase memory right at the moment.

In the Windows 7 operating system, it is possible to increase the RAM due to an additional paging file created on the drive.

The utility that allows you to do this is called ReadyBoost.

And you can call it by SIMply opening the properties of the flash drive and selecting the tab with the appropriate name.

Running the Ready Boost utility

Using this capability of the system allows you to increase the physical memory by the following amount:

  • Up to 256 GB for 64-bit Windows 7;
  • Up to 32 GB for Windows 7 32-bit;
  • Up to 4 GB on a second OS, including XP, if you download the utility additionally (it is not built into the OS).

The manufacturer recommends using the ratio of physical and flash memory in a ratio of no more than 2.5 to 1.

That is, if there is 2 GB of RAM on the laptop, it is undesirable to make the paging file size on the flash drive more than 5 GB.

The effectiveness of the method is quite decent. when reading small files, the speed of work increases by about 5-10 times.

However, when working with large areas of data, the difference will be almost imperceptible.

In order to increase memory you will need:

  • Take any free USB flash drive with an interface NOT lower than USB 2.0. However, the best choice would be to use USB 3.0, the data transfer rate (up to 5 Gb / s) of which is comparable to the parameters of DDR3 memory modules;
  • Insert the device into the USB port;
  • Format the flash drive (not necessary, but desirable) in NTFS format, which will increase the amount of possible memory from the maximum for FAT32 4 GB to a much larger size.
  • If there is any data on the medium, uncheck the “Clear table of contents” box. This will increase the formatting time, but guarantees the complete deletion of the data, which will now be used as RAM.

The process of formatting a flash drive to NTFS format

After a few minutes, a message about the end of formatting will appear on the screen.

And after selecting the ReadyBoost tab in the properties of the flash drive, it will be possible to configure the required amount of memory increase.

Reserving memory on a flash drive for expanding RAM

So, for example, if the storage is 16 GB, the laptop can use more than 15 of them.

In this case, the flash drive cannot be used to store data, and when viewing its properties, the following information will appear:

Fully usable storage for expanding memory

It is perfectly acceptable to use less flash memory. In this case, it can be used for other purposes.

True, before removing the device from the USB port, you should cancel the ReadyBoost operation by reopening the disk properties and the utilities tab, but by selecting “Do not use this device”.

Such actions will not always speed up the performance of your games and “heavy” applications. But, at least, the speed of opening the photo and the method increases guaranteed.

According to users who have tried this technique, the browser also works faster after its application.

Having learned how to properly increase the size of RAM on a laptop, you can, even if you have a NOT too powerful device, increase the speed of working with it and even launch programs that were previously unavailable for use. new games, latest versions of editors.

However, when increasing memory, it should be borne in mind that for the operation of many gaming applications, the main role is played not only by the RAM, but also by the graphics memory of the card, which, remaining at the same level, will reduce the efficiency of increasing the amount of RAM.

Therefore, in order not to be disappointed in the results of the work done, you should familiarize yourself with the requirements of the program in advance and, either Not only add memory modules, but also install a new adapter, or immediately make plans to buy a modern laptop.

How to increase RAM on a laptop: Tips

Installing RAM in a laptop is no big deal.

How to add RAM to Asus laptop?

Depending on the laptop model, RAM is located in different places on the device. In some models, it is in a special compartment under the bottom panel, in others. under the keyboard or motherboard.

You will learn the fundamental features of the installation and the increase in “RAM”, read the article further.

Types and amounts of RAM in Asus laptops

  • Until 2004, Asus laptops had SO DIMM SDRAM operating at 100 or 133 MHz.
  • 2005-2008 models used SO DIMM DDR type with 266, 333 or 400 MHz clock speeds.
  • 2006-2008 models have SO DIMM DDR2 memory, with frequencies of 533, 667 or 800 MHz.
  • Models from 2009 have SO DIMM DDR3 memory clocked at 800, 1066, 1333, or 1600 MHz. Some newer models. Micro DIMM DDR2.

Before purchasing additional RAM for your laptop, you must:

1. Determine what type of memory is already installed. Increasing the amount of RAM with boards of different types and characteristics is unacceptable.

The added memory, in all respects, must match the existing one. If an outdated model is installed that is not commercially available, you must also replace the existing bar with the new installed type. In this case, you should check whether the motherboard supports the installed type.

2. Each laptop model supports a certain amount of RAM, so you need to check the current specifications via BIOS or directly in Windows in the “Computer Properties”. You can also go to the official Asus website and there you can get acquainted with the characteristics of the model. Typically, the specification indicates the maximum amount of memory supported by the device.

Determination of RAM parameters by visual inspection

There are two options for getting the information you need, after which you can confidently answer the question that has arisen, whether it is possible to add RAM to the laptop. Without such preliminary work, the answer may be accompanied by errors, which is certainly undesirable.

The first option involves a partial disassembly of the laptop, after which the user will be able to personally verify the number of already installed memory slots, as well as the presence of empty space, into which an additional slot can still be added. Unfortunately, if there is no place to add a new slot, then the user will have to choose between completely abandoning the planned plans related to increasing the RAM, or replacing one slot with another, which has a larger volume.

It is also very important to know the maximum frequency supported by the motherboard. This information can also be found in technical documentation or on the Internet.

Despite the fact that it is not necessary to disassemble the laptop completely, many users refuse to do such actions once again. Programmers, going to meet them, have developed special software that allows you to get answers to all the above questions without the need for disassembly.

A fairly useful program is CPU-Z, it is very popular among most users, since it provides the ability to easily determine all the necessary information about the motherboard, RAM and processor.

The CPU-Z program can be downloaded from various resources, but preference should be given only to those that are already tested and can be trusted. After downloading, the installation of the software product is carried out, then, you need to name it by the shortcut. CPU-Z will start and the Program dialog box will appear on the screen.

After examining the information on two tabs of this software application, the user can find out if it is possible to increase the RAM on this laptop.

Initially, you should go to the “Memory” tab. At the top of it there are three key parameters that are important. Pay attention.

The first “Type” indicates what type of RAM is already installed and whether it can be added additionally on a specific laptop.

The second “Size” shows the amount of installed RAM. Having familiarized himself with this parameter, the user must finally clarify for himself whether to do anything further. The problem is that 32-bit operating systems can only accept and use up to 3GB of RAM. Wanting to increase the volume by more than 3 GB, it becomes necessary for the user to initially reinstall the system, give preference to 64-bit.

The line “Dram Freguency” indicates the frequency of the memory bus.

Next, go to the SPD tab, where you can get an answer to the question: “Is it possible to add additional modules and are there free slots available?” From the drop-down list menu, select Specified Slots in turn. If a slot is free, then when you select it, an empty window will be located opposite.

To determine the last important parameter, you will have to use Internet resources. Initially, on the “Mainboard” tab in the “Manufacturer and Model” field, the model of the motherboard, as well as the manufacturer, then find the corresponding specifications already on the Internet.

After all the important technical information about the laptop has been successfully collected, an additional RAM module has been correctly purchased, the user should get acquainted with how to add RAM to the laptop.

Disconnect the laptop completely first. To this end, it is completely turned off, the charger is disconnected, and the battery is removed. Next, it is very important to press the power off button again, and not paying attention to the fact that the laptop is already turned off. This repeated pressing allows you to permanently remove static electricity.

Static electricity should also be removed from the person who started replacing the RAM slot on the laptop. First of all, you should exclude silk clothes, then touch with one hand to the heating radiator, and with the other to the unpainted part of the laptop.

There is a cover on the back of the case in the center, which you need to unscrew, since it is behind it that the memory slots are located. If the main goal is to find out how to increase the amount of RAM on a laptop, then add an additional slot, the user only has to fill the empty space with a new module, thereby allowing to increase the total amount of memory.

When installing two identical modules from the same manufacturer, you can almost double the speed of the laptop by activating the dual-channel mode.

If there is no free space for installing a new module, then the user first has to remove the old module by bending the clips, and then install a new one. When correctly installed, the clamps should snap shut, accompanied by a characteristic click.

At the end, it remains to reinstall the protective cover and screw it tightly.

In some laptop models, memory slots are installed not on the back of the case under a separate cover, but under the keyboard, so if you want to increase the RAM, you will have to carry out the disassembly process, accompanied by greater responsibility and care. Initially, the keyboard is removed, after which the protective metal panels are unscrewed, then a new memory slot is installed and the laptop is assembled.

If any non-standard situations arise, it will be difficult for a beginner to solve them, so it is best to seek help from a qualified technician, who can quickly add a new module, while increasing the total amount of RAM.

So, every user can increase the RAM on a laptop if he first studies all the important information and follows the instructions. Additional memory will greatly improve the laptop’s performance and users will appreciate the work done.

Unlike desktop computers, laptops are practically NOT upgradeable. If you can sort out and replace almost everything in a PC, then in laptops only the hard disk and RAM (other names: RAM, RAM, RAM) change painlessly. To do this, disconnect the charger, remove the battery (if possible) and Unscrew the cover on the bottom. Before you will be available hard drive and RAM, which can be replaced. In older laptops from the early 2000s, this process can be more complicated due to the design, but since there are very few such devices today, we will not pay attention to them.

Two 4GB DDR3 RAM modules

As a rule, RAM rarely fails, so they change it in order to increase the volume and, accordingly, the performance of the laptop. There are several nuances to consider here.

  • 32-bit Windows operating systems cannot support more than 4 GB of RAM. If you need more than 4 GB of RAM, you will need to install 64-bit Windows (you may already have it installed. open My Computer and right-click on an empty area, select properties).
  • You must familiarize yourself with the specifications of the laptop or motherboard. This will allow you to find out the amount of maximum supported RAM, the number of slots for memory modules, the type of RAM modules. DDR1, DDR2, DDR3.
  • To find out the number of memory modules already in use, you can use the CPU-Z program (download. Run and see the drop-down list in the SPD tab), or you need to Unscrew the bottom cover and see the number of slots and the amount of RAM used.
  • As a rule, laptops have two slots for RAM, so if you have, for example, two 2 GB RAM modules installed, and you want 8 GB, then the current memory modules will have to be thrown out, and in their place, insert two 4 GB each or one 8 GB. It should also be borne in mind such a factor as the RAM soldered into the motherboard. This is typical for Ultrabooks and MacBooks. over, there are options here. the entire bar will be sealed without the possibility of increasing the volume, or one free slot for your RAM bar will be available.

Based on the above, we conclude that in order to replace the RAM in the laptop, you need to find out the characteristics of the motherboard, Unscrew the bottom cover and see what is already installed in the laptop and what can be improved. Then we buy RAM modules of a suitable type, turn off the power, take out the battery and change the RAM modules themselves.

To get the installed strips out of the slots, you need to snap off the latches on the sides and calmly get them, holding the strips on the sides, and not touching the gold-plated contacts inserted into the slot. It is also easy to insert new planks into the slot, when the latches snap into place, stop pressing and just check that the planks are level.

After replacing the modules, we collect everything back and turn on the laptop. To make sure everything is fine, run the CPU-Z utility again, or open My Computer. Right click on the free area and select properties. In the window that opens, in the system section, opposite the Installed memory (RAM) item, we look at the available memory.

There is nothing difficult in replacing laptop components yourself, but if you are still NOT confident in your abilities, you can watch the following from the company. Yakiy shows how elementary everything is.

Many laptop models offer the ability to SIMplify user access to memory modules for expansion or replacement. Therefore, there is often a corresponding need to disassemble the entire computer, as happens, for example, when cleaning the fan from dust or when replacing the keyboard. At the same time, your laptop model may have its own design features, so read the instructions for removing RAM in advance in the repair manual.

To add RAM to the laptop. Follow the steps in the following order:
Turn off the laptop completely;
Disconnect from it all connected external devices, the power supply cord, and remove the battery;
From the underside of the laptop, unscrew the screws securing the RAM compartment cover (if your computer model has a corresponding design), and, lifting up, remove the cover.
Spread apart the clips holding the RAM bar in the corresponding slot and carefully remove the memory module.
Reassemble the laptop with a new RAM strip in reverse order.

One of the fastest ways to improve the performance of a mobile computer is to increase the amount of RAM. To correctly select and install RAM cards, several factors need to be considered.

My laptop has 4GB of RAM, but this amount is not enough for me. How can I increase its volume ?

For your laptop to start working better, you need to know how to properly increase the RAM of your laptop. “Correctness” in this case means that the RAM strip you bought will be compatible with the motherboard, processor and the already installed RAM module.

Before heading out for the extra plank, see if you can add more RAM to your laptop. If you have an old laptop, then its motherboard may SIMply not support more RAM. Find out the model of the motherboard and see its specification on the manufacturer’s website:

  • Download the CPU-Z utility (you will still need it to determine the number of free slots).
  • Run the program and go to the “Mainboard” tab.
  • View your motherboard model.
  • Find your motherboard information on the laptop manufacturer’s website.

In the motherboard specification you need to pay attention to the points related to OPG.

From the information provided, you should obtain the following information:

  • Supported type. DDR3. If the laptop is old, then it may have DDR2 or DDR1 memory. They are interchangeable, so you only need to buy brackets that are compatible with the motherboard.
  • The maximum size allowed is 64 GB. There is no point in installing anymore, additional gigabytes will NOT be used.
  • The supported frequency is from 800 to 1800 MHz. The frequency of the RAM should fit into this gap and be as high as possible.
  • 4 x DIMM. number of slots for SO-DIMM brackets.

For maximum compatibility, it is better to immediately purchase sets of two identical modules. If you install one additional bar, then it must completely match the characteristics of the already installed module.

  • Run CPU-Z.
  • Go to the “Memory” tab.

Check the type again. DDR3. Pay attention to the term “DRAM Frequency”. it indicates the bandwidth.

Timing (delay before request execution) is shown below:

You need to buy a stick of RAM with exactly the same specifications. If nothing is displayed when you select a slot on the “SPD” tab, then nothing is connected to it, that is, you can install an additional RAM module into it. Basically, that’s all you need to know about how to increase the amount of RAM. However, there is another possibility of speeding up the card. overclocking.

If we calculate how much it costs to increase the RAM, it becomes clear that this is a serious financial investment in the modernization of the laptop. However, if you look at it, it is not necessary to buy an additional RAM bar.

Increasing the frequency (overclocking, overclocking) is performed. In the “Advanced” section. Depending on the motherboard model and BIOS firmware version, the name of specific items changes. Let’s see how to increase the amount of RAM in the BIOS, using the example of an ASUS motherboard:

After expanding the item in which the RAM frequency is indicated, you will see the available values.

DO NOT set a value that exceeds the maximum allowable indicator for your RAM model, otherwise the bar may burn out.

After increasing the frequency, run the memory test. Press WinR and type the command “mdsched”. Agree to reboot, during which the RAM will be checked for errors. If no errors are found, you can increase the frequency a little more, and not exceed the maximum allowable values.

Few of these devices undergo an upgrade (or, in any case, it is difficult), but in many cases it is quite easy to increase the memory on a laptop, this instruction is exactly about this and is aimed at novice users.

Some laptops of past years may not have completely balanced configurations by today’s standards, for example. Core i7 and 4 GB of RAM, although it can be increased to 8 or even 16 gigabytes, which for a number of applications, games, work with and graphics can speed up work and cheaply.

Before buying memory sticks and increasing RAM, it would be nice to know how many RAM slots in the laptop and how many of them are occupied, as well as what type of memory you need.

If you have Windows 10 installed on your computer, then this can be done very SIMply: start the task manager (you can from the menu that appears by right-clicking on the Start button), if the task manager is presented in a compact form, click the “Details” button below, then go to the “Performance” tab and select “Memory”.

At the bottom right, you will see information about how many memory slots are used and how many are available, as well as information about the memory frequency in the “Speed” item (from this information you can find out if DDR3 or DDR4 memory is used on a laptop).

In the case of Windows 8 and Windows 7, you can disassemble the laptop (or, if a separate cover is provided for accessing the memory, remove it) and look at the markings and the presence of slots (by the way, this information can also be in the instructions for the laptop). But, since my articles are still for novice users, we will consider an easier way to find out everything you need without first disassembling the laptop.

The free CPU-Z program will help us with this, showing in detail information about a computer or laptop. You can download the program from the official website of the developer at http://www.Cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html (I recommend downloading the ZIP archive to run CPU-Z without installing it on your computer, it is in the Download column on the left).

After downloading, run the program and pay attention to the following tabs, which will help us in the task of increasing the laptop’s RAM:

In general, in most cases, a glance at the SPD tab is enough, all the necessary information on the type, frequency and number of slots is there, and from it you can deduce the answer to the question of whether it is possible to increase the laptop memory and what is needed for this.

For example, from the screenshots above, you can draw conclusions:

  • The laptop has two slots for RAM.
  • One is occupied by a 4 GB DDR3 PC3-12800 module.
  • The used chipset is HM77, the supported maximum amount of RAM is 16 GB (this is searched on the Internet for the chipset, laptop model or motherboard).

This way I can:

  • Buy another 4GB RAM SO-DIMM (laptop memory) DDR3 PC12800 and increase the laptop memory to 8GB.
  • Buy two modules, but 8 GB each (4 will have to be removed) and increase the RAM to 16 GB.

RAM for laptop

To work in two-channel mode (which is preferable), two modules of the same volume are required (the manufacturer may be different, if, for example, we use the first option) in two slots.

READ  How To Choose The Right Laptop For Home Use

Note: in some cases, CPU-Z may show 4 memory slots for laptops, in which there are actually only 2 of them. Consider this, as well as the fact that almost all laptops have exactly 2 slots (except for some gaming and professional models).

In this example, we will consider the option of installing RAM in a laptop, when it was directly provided by the manufacturer. in this case, access to the memory slots is facilitated, as a rule, there is a separate cover for this.

In ultrabooks and some compact laptops, there is nothing like this comment, and the disassembly pattern may differ from model to model. over, for some laptops, such an upgrade will void the warranty, please consider this.

Note: if you do not know how to install memory in your laptop, I recommend to go to YouTube and search for the keyword “laptop model ram upgrade”. you will most likely find it. Where the whole process will be demonstrated clearly.

  • Turn off your laptop, including from the outlet. It is also advisable to remove the battery.
  • Use a screwdriver to open the cover, you will see the memory modules installed in the slots.
  • They can be removed, or new ones added. When removing, pay attention that, as a rule, memory modules are fixed on the side of the latch, which must be bent.
  • When you insert memory, do it tightly, until the latches snap into place (on most models). All this is comparatively easy.

When finished, replace the cover, turn on the laptop and check if the BIOS and Windows can see the installed RAM.

Installing new planks

The process for adding new planks is identical to that for installation. A distinctive feature is the presence of several slots located close to each other.

Adding memory

Another option that we can turn to in attempts to increase the computer’s RAM is adding RAM to the one already available and installed in the computer, as well as other effective ways to unleash the full potential of the components we use.

Memory types

There are 5 so-called standards (generations) in total: SDRAMM DIMM, DDR (or PC), DDR2 (PC-2), DDR3 (PC-3) and DDR4 (PC-4). Today, the last two standards are relevant, but if you own a PC that was purchased more than 5 years ago, most likely the memory module on your computer does not support them. Otherwise, the existing board turns out to be incompatible with the purchased new product and you will have to fork out for a new “motherboard”.

It should be mentioned that the standards differ among themselves Not only in terms of increased power, but also visually. If you look closely at the bar, you will see numerous points (contacts) and a depression (keys) on the bottom of it. From generation to generation, the number of contacts increased, and the location of the keys themselves was constantly changing. In addition, some manufacturers stick tags on strips where not only the type is indicated (both PC and DDR classification is used), but also the volume with the clock frequency (more about them below).

You can find out in more detail about the type of your OPG used and the “compatibility” of the motherboard in the device passport, on the official manufacturer’s page, or using the CPU-Z utility and the like. The last method is detailed in the section below.

Multichannel

In order to improve performance and increase the speed of computing capabilities, modern motherboards are designed to work in dual channel mode. Externally, this is represented by Several connectors for RAM lines of the same color, located perpendicular to the installed mother memory.

In case there are more than two available slots, manufacturers paint them in different colors for convenience. Thus, it is easier for the user to decide in which slot to install the bar (they must be of the same color). If you cannot differentiate slots by color, we recommend that you refer to the Official Documentation that came with your motherboard.

On the practical side, in this way we can use several planks at once in the work of our computer and achieve maximum performance. Please note that DDR / DDR2 memory sticks Plasma multichannel.

ReadyBoost technology

But what about those who cannot afford to buy a new organized crime group at the moment, and the need for a fast computer has NOT gone anywhere? There is a way out of this scrupulous situation, and it is called ReadyBoost.

Readyboost is a software development by Microsoft itself, which is designed to accelerate disk operations. This is achieved by caching the memory of the “flash drive”. The latter is required. In addition, its volume must be at least 2 times larger than the RAM on our PC. We talked in more detail about ReadyBoost in a separate article.

With a few SIMple manipulations in the local services of the system, as well as setting up the removable drive itself, we can achieve the desired results.

Installation

Installing new planks to the existing ones completely repeats the actions described in the section “Installing planks”. Repeat the instructions indicated in it, bypassing the 3rd point. In addition, be careful, as installing a new bar it is easy to damage the already installed ruler.

Volume

This indicator affects the functionality of the PC, as well as the ability to run demanding applications. The more volume is used, the more efficiently (faster) the running processes will be processed. Like the bus frequency, its maximum indicator is determined by the CPU and you can view it using another, not less well-known, AIDA64 program.

Download and install the application on your computer. Start AIDA64. Find the “Motherboard” directory in the list on the left. Click on it.

Next select “Chipset”. In the window that appears on the right, you can find the information you are interested in.

When deciding on the volume when buying, it is important to consider the bit depth of your OS. Windows on a 32-bit system does NOT display more than 3 GB of RAM, regardless of the number of dies and the size. Before upgrading, it is quite possible to think about reinstalling the OS, as well as all the applications used.

Pay attention to

Before adding RAM to the currently used one, several nuances must be taken into account:

How to find out the type of RAM using CPU-Z

As we have written many times before, before buying any accessories to upgrade your PC, it is important to consider compatibility with the parts already in use. In turn, for this you need to know what is hidden inside your PC case. And if you disassemble the “box” in search of the cherished details, laziness is named, and the passport with this information has long been buried with a ton of other waste paper, then the ideal way out of the situation would be to install Special utilities.

At the moment, we consider CPU-Z to be the best option (follow the link to download the archive with the program and read its description). This application will give an informative summary of all the components of your computer by pressing a few keys.

  • In order to install the utility, go to the official. The developer’s site will be named the “Setup” button.
  • Then repeat the same action, only with the appeared button “Download now”.
  • Save the installer and then install the applications on your computer.
  • Run the application. To view data on RAM, go to the “SPD” tab
  • In the “MemorySlotSelection” tab, select the slot in which the bracket is used.
  • As we can see in the screenshot, both of the strips in our laptop are used by identical Samsung strips of 4 GB each, with DDR4 memory type, operating at 1200 MHz.

What kind of RAM is on a laptop?

Before increasing the amount of RAM on a laptop, you should check what type of RAM is already on this PC. Installing an unsuitable module may cause a conflict between the old and the new memory sticks, as a result of which the laptop will malfunction, freeze or stop turning on altogether. Consider what characteristics you need to pay attention to when choosing a new RAM and how to determine the type of RAM already installed on a laptop.

Basic parameters of RAM

The first step is to figure out which parameters are considered decisive for random access memory devices. These characteristics are:

  • Generation (type) is the aLGorithm by which memory chips function. The rest of the RAM parameters depend on it (speed and efficiency, supply voltage, etc.). Today there are four generations of RAM. here DDR 1 to DDR 4.
  • Capacity. Determines how much information can SIMultaneously fit into RAM.
  • Speed standard. Indicates the bandwidth of the module, measured in Mb / s. These standards have an alphanumeric designation and always begin with the “RS” marking.
  • Manufacturer and serial number. Each company assigns to its product a certain marking (part number).
  • Timing. Determines the time spent on accessing the RAM microcircuit. The smaller the better.

Visual inspection of the RAM strip

You can check the amount of RAM with a SIMple call to the properties of the laptop. To do this, on the shortcut “My Computer”, click the RMB and select “Properties” in the list that opens. The RAM capacity can be found in the corresponding line.

However, the information obtained in this way is not enough, so you need to find out the rest of the RAM parameters. All memory card manufacturers put important data directly on the strip. To check them, you need to disassemble the laptop, remove the RAM from it and carefully familiarize yourself with the existing designations.

As an example, consider how to find out the model and characteristics of RAM, the appearance of which is shown in the figure.

Our RAM is produced by the South Korean company Hynix. The slot has a capacity of 4 GB. By the abbreviation 1Rx8, you can find out that the bar is one-sided (1R), that is, all the microcircuits are placed on one side. Double-sided RAM is indicated by the 2R mark. Number 8 indicates the number of memory chips.

This model has a bandwidth of RS3-12800. This allows you to find out the type of RAM (DDR3) and the maximum operating speed (12800 MB / s). To determine what the RAM frequency is, divide 12800 by 8, which will be equal to 1600 MHz.

Let’s consider another example. RAM for a laptop from Kingston, model KHX6400D2LL / 1G:

  • RAM type. DDR2;
  • Work speed. 6400 Mb / s;
  • Frequency. 6400/8 = 800 MHz;
  • Capacity. 1 GB;
  • 2.0V means that the board is powered by a non-standard voltage. 2 V, which must be manually set in BIOS.

On some storage devices, information is presented in a non-standard form, however, in such cases, you can find out their characteristics. For example, Kingston RAM labeled KHX1600C9D3X2K2 / 8GX has the following characteristics:

  • Frequency. 1600 MHz;
  • C9. 9 clock cycles delay;
  • Type. DDR3;
  • 8GX. 4 GB capacity.

Ways to determine the type of installed memory

You can find out which model of RAM is on a laptop in several ways:

  • By visual inspection of the RAM.
  • Check with additional software.

Programs for determining the parameters of RAM

If for some reason you DO NOT want to disassemble the laptop (for example, it is under warranty), but you still need to check what kind of RAM it has, you can use additional software.

One of the most effective programs in this area is AIDA64. It allows you to find out Not only the type and parameters of the storage device, but also the characteristics of the rest of the “hardware”. To check what kind of RAM is on the laptop, you must:

  • Download and install AIDA64 on your PC. The installation procedure is standard, so you should handle it without any problems.
  • Launch the application. You will see a message that this version of the utility is a trial version and is valid for only 30 days. We agree with this.
  • The main program window is divided into two parts. The left contains all the components installed on the laptop, and the right contains information about them. You need to open the “Motherboard” section and go to the SPD tab. After performing THESE actions, all information about the RAM installed on the PC will open.

Having figured out the parameters of the RAM, you can independently increase its volume, thereby improving the performance of the laptop.
