After increasing the frequency, run the memory test. Press WinR and type the command “mdsched”. Agree to reboot, during which the RAM will be checked for errors. If no errors are found, you can increase the frequency a little more, and not exceed the maximum allowable values.
Few of these devices undergo an upgrade (or, in any case, it is difficult), but in many cases it is quite easy to increase the memory on a laptop, this instruction is exactly about this and is aimed at novice users.
Some laptops of past years may not have completely balanced configurations by today’s standards, for example. Core i7 and 4 GB of RAM, although it can be increased to 8 or even 16 gigabytes, which for a number of applications, games, work with and graphics can speed up work and cheaply.
Before buying memory sticks and increasing RAM, it would be nice to know how many RAM slots in the laptop and how many of them are occupied, as well as what type of memory you need.
If you have Windows 10 installed on your computer, then this can be done very SIMply: start the task manager (you can from the menu that appears by right-clicking on the Start button), if the task manager is presented in a compact form, click the “Details” button below, then go to the “Performance” tab and select “Memory”.
At the bottom right, you will see information about how many memory slots are used and how many are available, as well as information about the memory frequency in the “Speed” item (from this information you can find out if DDR3 or DDR4 memory is used on a laptop).
In the case of Windows 8 and Windows 7, you can disassemble the laptop (or, if a separate cover is provided for accessing the memory, remove it) and look at the markings and the presence of slots (by the way, this information can also be in the instructions for the laptop). But, since my articles are still for novice users, we will consider an easier way to find out everything you need without first disassembling the laptop.
The free CPU-Z program will help us with this, showing in detail information about a computer or laptop. You can download the program from the official website of the developer at http://www.Cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html (I recommend downloading the ZIP archive to run CPU-Z without installing it on your computer, it is in the Download column on the left).
After downloading, run the program and pay attention to the following tabs, which will help us in the task of increasing the laptop’s RAM:
In general, in most cases, a glance at the SPD tab is enough, all the necessary information on the type, frequency and number of slots is there, and from it you can deduce the answer to the question of whether it is possible to increase the laptop memory and what is needed for this.
For example, from the screenshots above, you can draw conclusions:
- The laptop has two slots for RAM.
- One is occupied by a 4 GB DDR3 PC3-12800 module.
- The used chipset is HM77, the supported maximum amount of RAM is 16 GB (this is searched on the Internet for the chipset, laptop model or motherboard).
This way I can:
- Buy another 4GB RAM SO-DIMM (laptop memory) DDR3 PC12800 and increase the laptop memory to 8GB.
- Buy two modules, but 8 GB each (4 will have to be removed) and increase the RAM to 16 GB.
RAM for laptop
To work in two-channel mode (which is preferable), two modules of the same volume are required (the manufacturer may be different, if, for example, we use the first option) in two slots.
Note: in some cases, CPU-Z may show 4 memory slots for laptops, in which there are actually only 2 of them. Consider this, as well as the fact that almost all laptops have exactly 2 slots (except for some gaming and professional models).
In this example, we will consider the option of installing RAM in a laptop, when it was directly provided by the manufacturer. in this case, access to the memory slots is facilitated, as a rule, there is a separate cover for this.
In ultrabooks and some compact laptops, there is nothing like this comment, and the disassembly pattern may differ from model to model. over, for some laptops, such an upgrade will void the warranty, please consider this.
Note: if you do not know how to install memory in your laptop, I recommend to go to YouTube and search for the keyword “laptop model ram upgrade”. you will most likely find it. Where the whole process will be demonstrated clearly.
- Turn off your laptop, including from the outlet. It is also advisable to remove the battery.
- Use a screwdriver to open the cover, you will see the memory modules installed in the slots.
- They can be removed, or new ones added. When removing, pay attention that, as a rule, memory modules are fixed on the side of the latch, which must be bent.
- When you insert memory, do it tightly, until the latches snap into place (on most models). All this is comparatively easy.
When finished, replace the cover, turn on the laptop and check if the BIOS and Windows can see the installed RAM.
Installing new planks
The process for adding new planks is identical to that for installation. A distinctive feature is the presence of several slots located close to each other.
Another option that we can turn to in attempts to increase the computer’s RAM is adding RAM to the one already available and installed in the computer, as well as other effective ways to unleash the full potential of the components we use.
There are 5 so-called standards (generations) in total: SDRAMM DIMM, DDR (or PC), DDR2 (PC-2), DDR3 (PC-3) and DDR4 (PC-4). Today, the last two standards are relevant, but if you own a PC that was purchased more than 5 years ago, most likely the memory module on your computer does not support them. Otherwise, the existing board turns out to be incompatible with the purchased new product and you will have to fork out for a new “motherboard”.
It should be mentioned that the standards differ among themselves Not only in terms of increased power, but also visually. If you look closely at the bar, you will see numerous points (contacts) and a depression (keys) on the bottom of it. From generation to generation, the number of contacts increased, and the location of the keys themselves was constantly changing. In addition, some manufacturers stick tags on strips where not only the type is indicated (both PC and DDR classification is used), but also the volume with the clock frequency (more about them below).
You can find out in more detail about the type of your OPG used and the “compatibility” of the motherboard in the device passport, on the official manufacturer’s page, or using the CPU-Z utility and the like. The last method is detailed in the section below.
In order to improve performance and increase the speed of computing capabilities, modern motherboards are designed to work in dual channel mode. Externally, this is represented by Several connectors for RAM lines of the same color, located perpendicular to the installed mother memory.
In case there are more than two available slots, manufacturers paint them in different colors for convenience. Thus, it is easier for the user to decide in which slot to install the bar (they must be of the same color). If you cannot differentiate slots by color, we recommend that you refer to the Official Documentation that came with your motherboard.
On the practical side, in this way we can use several planks at once in the work of our computer and achieve maximum performance. Please note that DDR / DDR2 memory sticks Plasma multichannel.
But what about those who cannot afford to buy a new organized crime group at the moment, and the need for a fast computer has NOT gone anywhere? There is a way out of this scrupulous situation, and it is called ReadyBoost.
Readyboost is a software development by Microsoft itself, which is designed to accelerate disk operations. This is achieved by caching the memory of the “flash drive”. The latter is required. In addition, its volume must be at least 2 times larger than the RAM on our PC. We talked in more detail about ReadyBoost in a separate article.
With a few SIMple manipulations in the local services of the system, as well as setting up the removable drive itself, we can achieve the desired results.
Installing new planks to the existing ones completely repeats the actions described in the section “Installing planks”. Repeat the instructions indicated in it, bypassing the 3rd point. In addition, be careful, as installing a new bar it is easy to damage the already installed ruler.
This indicator affects the functionality of the PC, as well as the ability to run demanding applications. The more volume is used, the more efficiently (faster) the running processes will be processed. Like the bus frequency, its maximum indicator is determined by the CPU and you can view it using another, not less well-known, AIDA64 program.
Download and install the application on your computer. Start AIDA64. Find the “Motherboard” directory in the list on the left. Click on it.
Next select “Chipset”. In the window that appears on the right, you can find the information you are interested in.
When deciding on the volume when buying, it is important to consider the bit depth of your OS. Windows on a 32-bit system does NOT display more than 3 GB of RAM, regardless of the number of dies and the size. Before upgrading, it is quite possible to think about reinstalling the OS, as well as all the applications used.

How to find out the type of RAM using CPU-Z
As we have written many times before, before buying any accessories to upgrade your PC, it is important to consider compatibility with the parts already in use. In turn, for this you need to know what is hidden inside your PC case. And if you disassemble the “box” in search of the cherished details, laziness is named, and the passport with this information has long been buried with a ton of other waste paper, then the ideal way out of the situation would be to install Special utilities.
At the moment, we consider CPU-Z to be the best option (follow the link to download the archive with the program and read its description). This application will give an informative summary of all the components of your computer by pressing a few keys.
- In order to install the utility, go to the official. The developer’s site will be named the “Setup” button.
- Then repeat the same action, only with the appeared button “Download now”.
- Save the installer and then install the applications on your computer.
- Run the application. To view data on RAM, go to the “SPD” tab
- In the “MemorySlotSelection” tab, select the slot in which the bracket is used.
- As we can see in the screenshot, both of the strips in our laptop are used by identical Samsung strips of 4 GB each, with DDR4 memory type, operating at 1200 MHz.
What kind of RAM is on a laptop?
Before increasing the amount of RAM on a laptop, you should check what type of RAM is already on this PC. Installing an unsuitable module may cause a conflict between the old and the new memory sticks, as a result of which the laptop will malfunction, freeze or stop turning on altogether. Consider what characteristics you need to pay attention to when choosing a new RAM and how to determine the type of RAM already installed on a laptop.
Basic parameters of RAM
The first step is to figure out which parameters are considered decisive for random access memory devices. These characteristics are:
- Generation (type) is the aLGorithm by which memory chips function. The rest of the RAM parameters depend on it (speed and efficiency, supply voltage, etc.). Today there are four generations of RAM. here DDR 1 to DDR 4.
- Capacity. Determines how much information can SIMultaneously fit into RAM.
- Speed standard. Indicates the bandwidth of the module, measured in Mb / s. These standards have an alphanumeric designation and always begin with the “RS” marking.
- Manufacturer and serial number. Each company assigns to its product a certain marking (part number).
- Timing. Determines the time spent on accessing the RAM microcircuit. The smaller the better.
Visual inspection of the RAM strip
You can check the amount of RAM with a SIMple call to the properties of the laptop. To do this, on the shortcut “My Computer”, click the RMB and select “Properties” in the list that opens. The RAM capacity can be found in the corresponding line.
However, the information obtained in this way is not enough, so you need to find out the rest of the RAM parameters. All memory card manufacturers put important data directly on the strip. To check them, you need to disassemble the laptop, remove the RAM from it and carefully familiarize yourself with the existing designations.
As an example, consider how to find out the model and characteristics of RAM, the appearance of which is shown in the figure.
Our RAM is produced by the South Korean company Hynix. The slot has a capacity of 4 GB. By the abbreviation 1Rx8, you can find out that the bar is one-sided (1R), that is, all the microcircuits are placed on one side. Double-sided RAM is indicated by the 2R mark. Number 8 indicates the number of memory chips.
This model has a bandwidth of RS3-12800. This allows you to find out the type of RAM (DDR3) and the maximum operating speed (12800 MB / s). To determine what the RAM frequency is, divide 12800 by 8, which will be equal to 1600 MHz.
Let’s consider another example. RAM for a laptop from Kingston, model KHX6400D2LL / 1G:
- RAM type. DDR2;
- Work speed. 6400 Mb / s;
- Frequency. 6400/8 = 800 MHz;
- Capacity. 1 GB;
- 2.0V means that the board is powered by a non-standard voltage. 2 V, which must be manually set in BIOS.
On some storage devices, information is presented in a non-standard form, however, in such cases, you can find out their characteristics. For example, Kingston RAM labeled KHX1600C9D3X2K2 / 8GX has the following characteristics:
- Frequency. 1600 MHz;
- C9. 9 clock cycles delay;
- Type. DDR3;
- 8GX. 4 GB capacity.
Ways to determine the type of installed memory
You can find out which model of RAM is on a laptop in several ways:
- By visual inspection of the RAM.
- Check with additional software.
Programs for determining the parameters of RAM
If for some reason you DO NOT want to disassemble the laptop (for example, it is under warranty), but you still need to check what kind of RAM it has, you can use additional software.
One of the most effective programs in this area is AIDA64. It allows you to find out Not only the type and parameters of the storage device, but also the characteristics of the rest of the “hardware”. To check what kind of RAM is on the laptop, you must:
- Download and install AIDA64 on your PC. The installation procedure is standard, so you should handle it without any problems.
- Launch the application. You will see a message that this version of the utility is a trial version and is valid for only 30 days. We agree with this.
- The main program window is divided into two parts. The left contains all the components installed on the laptop, and the right contains information about them. You need to open the “Motherboard” section and go to the SPD tab. After performing THESE actions, all information about the RAM installed on the PC will open.
Having figured out the parameters of the RAM, you can independently increase its volume, thereby improving the performance of the laptop.
