The following input methods are distinguished:
1. Feather (cheaper).
2. Touch (more fine-tuned scaling and more room for creativity).
An important point when choosing a device is the equal aspect ratio of the tablet and computer monitor. This will avoid possible distortions. For a widescreen display, you need an appropriate type of tablet. Suitable ratio is 4: 3 and 16: 9.
The size of the work area can be easily adjusted, so the difference in proportions is NOT a big problem.
Working on a graphics tablet is highly dependent on the characteristics of the pen. An excellent result can be obtained only if you are comfortable using the device. The pen is equipped with additional buttons, it can have a rubber coating. In any case, the convenience of its use comes first.
The following parameters are of great importance:
1. Hardness. softness. A hard nib is capable of creating a scratching effect. Soft can wear off quickly. Spare tips are welcomed.
2. Sensitivity to pressure. It is indicated by numbers. For beginners, a low level sensitivity is fine. The higher this indicator, the more realistic the drawing process is. With a slight pressure, a translucent line remains, with a stronger one, it turns out to be thicker and brighter. The industry standard is 2048 levels of sensitivity. Almost all modern styluses have exactly this indicator.
3. Sensitivity to tilt of the pen. This parameter is measured in degrees. The thickness of the line during drawing depends on the angle of inclination of the pen. Thanks to this, the artist can make strokes of the desired thickness, rather than using buttons on a tablet or in a computer program.
The best graphic tablet manufacturers. Which company to choose
Several companies are engaged in the release of graphic tablets.
The most popular manufacturers both among amateurs and professional users:
The products of these brands are of excellent quality and high reliability. The model of a particular brand should be chosen depending on the tasks that will have to be solved with its help.
Working surface size
It ranges from A3 to A6.
1. A tablet with a minimum screen size is convenient because it takes up little space, great for use with an amateur purpose.
2. In highly specialized areas where you have to work with drawings, devices of the A3 or A4 size are preferred, which are more suitable for creating a high-quality picture. This format allows for accurate rendering of the smallest details.
3. Satisfies the needs of many users and a tablet with A5 screen size. The price is less, but with its help very good drawings and drawings are obtained.
This figure in professional tablets is 200 points per second. At a lower speed, there is a delay in the display of actions on the screen. For ordinary users, 100. 150 points per second is quite enough.
Principle of operation and structure of a graphics tablet
A graphics tablet is a device in the form of a case with a work area that is tied to a PC monitor.
With a special pen for drawing, available in the kit, any image is applied on the active area. When connected to a computer, the monitor displays the resulting picture or drawing converted to digital form.
Using a computer program that works with a tablet, you can change various image parameters. color, line thickness, transparency, and much more. Most professional artists and designers prefer to work with special programs Corel Draw, Adobe Photoshop.
Today graphic tablets are presented in a wide range. They differ in the size of the work area, resolution, sensitivity and other criteria.
Due to its highly sensitive pen, high-resolution work surface, high price, it is in demand mainly by professionals. Usually on the screen where the input is made, the image is also displayed.
- High-quality color rendering.
- High pressure sensitivity.
- On most models, the buttons have different functions depending on the application.
- Light weight.
You can use it to write, draw. This option is worth considering when choosing a device for an amateur, as well as for a child learning computer drawing. The tablet is equipped with different functions depending on the brand and price.
- Rich color palette provides great opportunities for creativity.
- The created work can be replicated.
- Drawing can be adjusted.
- A wide selection of different fonts, tektur allows you to add new inscriptions, logos.
- Mobility. It is convenient to work with the tablet in the office, cafe, any other room.
- Possibility of entering arbitrary graphic data using a pen or mouse.
- Higher price than digital notepad.
- A tablet of this type is inconvenient when working in nature. you have to take a laptop with you.
- Works created on a graphic tablet, according to connoisseurs of natural works, are considered “inanimate”.
Graphics Tablet Selection Options
The control keys. the so-called Express Key. are designed to quickly switch between the instruments in use. Basically, these buttons are used to activate various functions of the graphic editors. The more keys. the more tools you can hang on the “shortcuts”.
However, a large number of control keys are SIMply not needed. If there are more than 10 of them, you can easily get confused by different labels. Wacom graphics tablets typically use 4-8 control keys, which is more than enough for most graphic and web designers.
On ultra budget graphics tablets, the control keys are SIMply lacking. As a consequence, the designer needs to switch between different controls (mouse, tablet itself, keyboard, etc.). It is much better to use devices with control keys.
How to choose a graphics tablet for drawing: key parameters
The most important criteria for choosing a graphics tablet are:
Screen resolution (for interactive monitors)
The manufacturer of the device is also important.
Types of graphic tablets
Graphic tablets are structurally and functionally divided into three groups: digital notebooks, semi-professional solutions and interactive monitors.
Interactive monitors are most commonly used by professional designers. In fact, such devices are NOT graphic tablets in the classical sense of the term. Rather, they are remote touchscreen displays, which are complemented by a sensitive stylus pen for drawing and selecting the necessary tool.
In recent years, there has been a trend towards replacing such graphics tablets with specialized mobile computers. These devices include Microsoft Surfaces of the third and fourth generations, Apple iPad Pro and versions of 2017, as well as Google Pixelbook and many SIMilar solutions. The above devices are structurally hybrid ultrabooks, however, due to the support of touch input with the introduction of a stylus (may NOT be included in the kit), they can be used by professional designers, artists, picchera and other specialists in the digital graphics industry.
Format is the size of the active area of the graphics tablet. Most often it meets the generally applicable paper size standards. i.e. A5, A4, A3, etc.
A5 and smaller. suitable for uncomplicated duct tape. The main advantage of such tablets is the ability to SIMply put them on your lap;
A4. the standard for graphic design and SIMple artwork (web art, illustrations for articles)
A3 and above is a solution for complex graphic works such as professional design, high-definition artwork, large-sized printed materials, architecture, etc.
However, a specific format should be selected based on your requirements and preferences, as well as the intended use. The larger it is, the more expensive a graphics tablet is.
The higher the resolution of the working surface, the more precisely the cursor controlled by the stylus is positioned on the monitor. The value of this parameter is especially important when using 4K screens. For such monitors, a resolution of at least 4000 dpi is desirable.
A digital notepad is the SIMplest and most affordable graphics tablet option. However, it has very limited functionality, so only very undemanding users can draw with it. Essentially, digital notepads are for adding notes and translating handwritten text into electronic form.
However, digital notebooks are most often used in the business environment, where they are used to leave handwritten signatures on electronic documents.
Of course, such graphic tablets can be used for drawing. However, the lack of recognition of degrees of pressure in the stylus and the low resolution of the touch surface, as well as the lack of protection against unintentional pressing in most models make them at least uncomfortable. On such tablets, you can only draw up SIMple sketches.
How to choose a graphics tablet for drawing
When choosing a graphics tablet, pay attention to the type of device and some of its technical characteristics.
Main selection criteria
The main criteria for choosing a graphics tablet are:
Format (A5, A4, A3), working surface resolution;
Stylus and pen tip specifications;
Control keys (availability and quantity);
Additional functions (immersion mode, the ability to work without connecting to a PC)
Features of interactive screens.
How to use a graphics tablet: instructions and specifications
Who has never tried drawing? Probably, such people do not exist at all. Drawing is usually started in early childhood, because it is such a fun activity. You just need to take something that has color and start painting everything around. Modern technology, despite its complexity, has greatly SIMplified this process by connecting artists to a computer using a graphics tablet. Today on the market there are many different models of this type of apparatus from completely different companies, therefore, it makes almost no sense to describe each separately.
How do I use a pen tablet? We will try to grasp the basic principles of working with it, and as an example we will take the most common models today.
Now you know exactly how to use a graphics tablet, whatever it may be.
How do I use a Wacom pen tablet? Very SIMple. First you need to connect the tablet to your computer, let the first one install everything you need to work. Next, you need to decide on the program in which you will work. After the program starts working and the tablet is successfully connected, you just have to deal with the features and let your inner Picasso manifest itself!
It is worth noting that all Wacom models have features such as:
- Eraser. Allows you to immediately make edits without looking for the required function in the program;
- Multi-touch. allows the tablet to determine the coordinates of more than one touch point, which allows you to work with the tablet with the movement of your fingers;
- Working through paper is a very convenient function that allows you to draw as if through tracing paper, which opens up a huge number of creative possibilities.
Let’s discuss a bit how to use the Wacom Bamboo pen tablet. This device has a very convenient function, thanks to which you have the ability to control your fingers: press one. it’s like pressing the left mouse button, press two. like the right one, spread the thumb and index fingers. zoom in on the picture, twirl your finger. the picture will return like this as you want.
The main thing that makes Bamboo tablets different can be traced by the name. Take Bamboo Touch, Bamboo Pen, Bamboo PenTouch, Bamboo Fun PenTouch as an example.
- Bamboo Touch is a black tablet with a 10×15 work surface. This device has only multi-touch, so the pen cannot be found in the package. For photo processing, of course, it will not work, but for viewing photos it will do.
- The Bamboo Pen is the same plus pen input. SIMple photo processing can already be done.
- Bamboo PenTouch. going up and down, adding soft keys to all the functions of the previous models.
- The Bamboo Fun PenTouch is a silver device that comes in two versions: 10×15 and 21.6×13.7. Here, an eraser is added to everything else.
Wacom Intuos tablet
Now I’m burned out on how to use the Wacom Intuos pen tablet. Let’s go a little deeper into the details, because we have already discussed how to use a graphics tablet in a broad sense. Wacom’s Intuos line is divided into two types: Intuos and Intuos Pro. Each is split into four more models, which vary mostly in size. The first one reveals such convenient functions as:
- Eraser pressure sensitivity is a useful thing that opens up the possibility of using special drawing techniques “on the go”;
- Pen holder;
- Programmable hot keys;
- Programmable keys on the pen;
- Connector for wireless receiver.
In the second, you will find almost the same, only on top of everything else:
- Add sensitivity of the pen to tilt by sixty degrees;
- There is a programmable touch ring for four modes;
- programmable keys;
- Higher sensitivity and accuracy.
Wacom Intuos is perfect for those looking to get into drawing, illustration, sketching design, photo editing, animation, storyboarding, 2D, 3D sculpting, and more.
Any graphic tablet consists of a so-called pen, which is a kind of pencil or pen, and a working surface, which, as you might guess, will be the artist’s canvas. Feathers, even in weight, are as SIMilar as possible, which is done, of course, for ease of use, and the canvases vary in size and shape. One way or another, all changes only affect the ease of drawing, and not how to use the graphics tablet. Any tablet will capture your monitor completely, so that with the help of the pen you can reach any corner of the drawing program interface. The pen works like a regular computer mouse, but with greater accuracy, since for a person to draw in the same way as the tablet offers, in a format where it is convenient.
Wacom pens do NOT need to be charged as they are powered by Electron Magnetic Resonance from the tablet.
If you’re tired of wires, Wacom tablets offer wireless options. To do this, you will need to purchase a wireless module.
Wacom offers a wide range of devices to suit all tastes, and Genius gives you the opportunity to get to know your graphics tablets at no extra cost. It is useful to consider this when choosing a device.
How to set up your tablet for drawing on your computer
It is unlikely that you will be able to connect a new device and immediately start drawing on it for beginners: first you will need to customize it for yourself. Where to start drawing on a graphics tablet (such as the One by Wacom medium)? It is clear what to connect the gadget to the computer, laptop. This is done using a standard USB cable that comes with the kit. What to do next. we will consider in detail the points.
Lots of color
Novice artists can paint by choosing shades that are NOT compatible at all, such as Mixing blue and green. The variety of shades in programs installed on a graphics tablet (for example, Intuos Pro L) is a huge field for creativity. The problem is that users need to understand where all these tones come from.
If you need to make the shade brighter, you need to increase the percentage of brightness or lower the same tone indicator. Red becomes warm or cold, depending on the shade, which is located next to it.
Novice artists Who don’t know this just fill the picture with a random set of tones, don’t think about their combination. You definitely need to deal with the issues of shading, lighting and mixing tones, this is the only way to get a good drawing.
How to draw on a graphics tablet: where to start, 3 tips
A graphics tablet consists of a “canvas”. a touch surface and a “pen”. a stylus. This device allows the artist to SIMulate drawing on paper. The picture drawn with the stylus on the surface of the tablet is displayed immediately on the computer. expensive units like the Cintiq Pro touch 16 FHD allow you to see the image right on the tablet itself. But with this gadget everything is not so SIMple. Using it is not at all the same as drawing on paper. How to learn to draw with numbers. described in the article.
Common mistakes when drawing
Drawing with a graphics tablet like the CTL-4100WLE-N is quite unusual and difficult at first. Beginners can choose, for example, the wrong canvas size or use the wrong brushes. In order not to make common mistakes, it is worth studying the following sections of the article.
Too many complex brushes and large strokes
Professional artists perform most of the work with SIMple strokes, only occasionally using complex ones. When painting with a digitizer like the EasyPen I405X, the selection of brushes is greatly SIMplified: there are brushes, for example, for creating fur or a brush. There is a need to practice drawing, there is already a ready-made solution.
Brushes for various designs are convenient. The problem arises if you use them as core skills. That is, DO NOT look for ways to draw fur beautifully and accurately, but just take the right brush and paint. If this becomes a habit, the user will stop learning altogether. To begin with, you should use SIMple brushes, hone your drawing skills. and only then move on to complex ones.
Another problem with brushes is the use of very large strokes. When the picture is almost complete, there is a desire to get the finished result as soon as possible. And this is where the user resorts to big strokes. But this is wrong. Large strokes should only be used first to sketch out the shape, add colors, etc. To draw the details and finish the sketch, you need to use a small brush. This will help to create very realistic and accurate pictures.
So, the configuration steps:
The settings should be adapted to suit your preferences, changing the characteristics until they become as convenient as possible for work.
How to learn to draw on a graphics tablet: basic tips
Depicting landscapes, portraits, anime, comics, and anything else, on a digitizer (for example, Intuos S) is much faster and more convenient than on plain paper or using a mouse on a computer. Especially in the first case, speed helps out, especially if the gadget is used for work.
How do I start drawing with a graphics tablet? Here are 3 top tips:
- Learn to draw traditionally first. If you do not know how to draw pictures on paper, then even a “fancy” gadget will not help you draw beautifully. The more skillfully the images are obtained on paper, the easier it will be on digital.
- Exercise regularly. You can watch various tutorials on the net on how to draw correctly on a graphics tablet. The most difficult thing is to get used to the fact that the drawing is applied with strokes, and not moving your hand over the surface of the device. To begin with, it is worth practicing on the image of SIMple figures (triangle, square, etc.), Barcode x, writing the alphabet, then you can print the pictures on paper, put it on the tablet and outline the contours. The hand should get used to the pressure on the stylus pen.
- Choose a drawing program that suits you. A convenient and understandable program is one of the main elements of drawing. For complex graphic designs, Adobe Photoshop is ideal. But you can use lighter and SIMpler software: GIMP, Paint Tool SAI, or another utility. The program should be tested for convenience first on a computer, click the interface with the mouse to find out all the capabilities of the software.
You should NOT jump straight to complex technology and learn how to draw anime or comics on a graphics tablet. All this requires skill and practice. Here you need to follow the principle “from SIMple to complex”.
Wrong canvas size
There may be 2 problems here:
- The leaf is too small. An aspiring artist usually uses a sheet size for the resolution of his screen. This is fundamentally wrong. It is impossible to know for sure on which display other users will later watch the created image. Therefore, it is not worth “saving” on the resolution, the higher it is. the more pixels in the picture and the better the final resolution will be.
- A very large leaf. For maximum resolution, you will need a powerful PC, which will have an equally powerful program for processing pictures. Also remember that high resolution is best for detailed pictures. Drawings on a graphics tablet (for example, on the PTH-860P-R) are not always needed exactly like this.
Is there a solution to THESE problems? Before saving the picture, you need to resize it. There is no ideal resolution setting that will suit absolutely everyone. But there is a general rule: the more detailed the result, the less chances that it will be indistinct and blurry at maximum resolution. But if, according to your ideas, the picture is a little sketchy, then it is better to use a small resolution.
Avoid Strong Contrast
It happens that the perception of shades is impaired due to the quality of the display itself. So how do you make the contrast you want so it looks the same on all screens? In “Photoshop” there is a special tool Levels, which shows how much of each tone is used in the picture. You can change the levels by moving the sliders.
The level of contrast depends, of course, on the picture itself, but if there are no dark and light zones in the image at all, the picture will not look very good.
Before drawing, you need to plan the lighting on the sphere:
- Draw a circle and shade it with a dark shade (not black)
- Add medium tone, then lightest (not white)
- Add 1-2 semitones;
- Add small amounts of black and white;
- Then connect everything and smooth out the transitions.
You can use this blank to shade other objects. You also need to act on the rest of the pictures: the darkest tone, halftones, the lightest, halftones, white and black tones.
Can I use a regular tablet as a graphics?
Many of us have repeatedly asked the question: “How to make a graphic from an ordinary tablet?” After all, every self-respecting modern digital artist, or even just a beginner, wants to have such a thing in his arsenal. The trouble is that NOT everyone can afford it, or maybe they just don’t want to spend. Therefore, everyone who has an Android or iPad is looking for all sorts of solutions to this problem. What kind? Let’s figure it out.
Air Stylus for iPad
There is also an iPad app that allows you to transform your device into a graphics tablet. Due to the fact that the iPad’s screen is not as sensitive to pressure, many have given up trying to use it for such needs. But thanks to a special program and pen, it still became possible. Unlike a SIMilar application for Android, Air Stylus can transfer images from tablet to computer and you can control the pressure.
The application cooperates with manufacturers of various pens and has the ability to support such popular graphic editors as Pixelmator and Adobe Photoshop. And the total number of joint programs is about two dozen. Also, the developers plan to cooperate with Windows and Android.
Budget iPad with stylus
Much to our user happiness, the “apple” company is still engaged in the development of a new budget iPad, which supports working with a stylus, and also has a wide “graphic” functionality.
Combining the power of the system with rich multimedia capabilities, it allows you to create work projects and use hundreds of design applications in the App Store. The working area, which is a 9.7-inch Multi-Touch screen with LED backlighting with a resolution of 2048 and 1536, gives a picture that looks very vivid, realistic and incredibly detailed. Powerful system stuffing easily handles complex game graphics and runs 4K without any problems.
However, the main feature of the budget iPad. Apple Pencil support that takes your creativity to a whole new level. The stylus is sensitive to pressure, so you can effortlessly change the thickness of the lines, add special effects, just like when manipulating a real pencil. Sign, paint with watercolors, edit notes, do editing. All this can be done on the new Apple iPad 2018!
Of course, there are other tablet options for working with graphics on TopGuds, but the iPad is best adapted to the needs of artists and other creative people.
Sketchbook Ink Editor by Autodesk
The utility allows you to work with vector graphics, using the widest toolbox. Brushes, an eraser, a whole palette of colors, and more. You can overlay layers and get a fairly realistic image using a special thin stylus. Agree, this is much more convenient than carrying around a set of pencils and paper. And more importantly, scaling the resulting drawings in Sketchbook Ink. Their quality is not lost at all.
Xorgtablet for Android
This application will allow you to use a regular tablet as a graphic one. With this application, you can connect to your PC and use the GIMP editor. However, it is worth hoping that this will completely replace a graphics tablet, since it is worth remembering that an ordinary NK will not be able to recognize with what force you press the display, and this will significantly affect the quality of work, and your nerves too. The only option “rescue” in this situation may be a digitizer integrated into your tablet, which works in tandem with a so-called pen. With this app you will be able to connect via USB cable or Wi-Fi.
One of the disadvantages of this work is the fact that the mouse stops responding in the editor. In addition, the drivers for this application only exist for the Linux operating system.
What makes a graphics tablet different from a regular one?
First of all, it is worth remembering the direct purpose of a regular tablet:
It is used to search for information on the Internet;
For watching movies;
For work in office programs.
A graphic tablet is needed in order to create graphic drawings in Special programs, for example CorelDraw. These tablets replace the artist’s canvas, brush and palette and help create digital drawings.
Pros of using a graphics tablet:
You can use a huge number of shades and colors, the choice is not limited;
After creating the next masterpiece, it is not necessary to spend a lot of time to transfer the drawing to a computer format;
It is no longer necessary to search for various brushes or pencils, all this replaces the same pen, the way of drawing which can be changed, does not waste much time and effort.
Thanks to all these functions, no tablet can compete with the graphics one, since all these functions affect the quality and speed of work.
Despite all the obvious advantages, many people still ask the question: “Why are graphic tablets expensive?” I would like to note right away that this is a reckless prejudice, because the for graphic tablets are very different. And this state of affairs depends on many factors:
Display size. Graphic tablets also differ in screen size, which is an important factor when buying such a device. So, the most expensive tablet can be with a diagonal of 22 inches, and the cheapest with a diagonal of 146 by 93 millimeters.
Resolution and pressure sensitivity. In expensive devices, the resolution can be more than 4 thousand lines per inch, and the sensitivity is about 1023 levels. The most budget-friendly graphics tablets have much lower resolution and much less sensitivity.
Areas of tasks where the tablet feels great. The broadest: from surfing the Internet to performing office tasks. But, as far as graphics are concerned, it’s not all that SIMple. So can a regular tablet be used as a graphics tablet? Sure! To create beautiful visual content on a non-graphics tablet, it is enough to carry out an easy software upgrade. All you need is a tablet, an internet connection, and a stylus. For iOS and Android, the Global Network has its own programs.
Types of additional gadgets for graphic tablets
The easiest way to work in graphics programs on a tablet is with a mouse and stylus. Even better if a stylus with extra nibs. There are other useful “things” with which the creative process becomes more convenient and easy:
Replaceable stylus nibs. Constant touching of the pen to the working surface of the tablet will inevitably lead to stitching, deformation of the tool, from which it becomes inconvenient to work with it, therefore it is better to change them from time to time. One more thing: these “nozzles” “scratch” the surface in different ways, so if you successfully select the tip option for each individual task, you can achieve very interesting design effects.
Replaceable smooth surface. Provides less friction to the nib than a standard pad, allowing the nib to wear less and last longer.
Graphic tablet glove. Prevents unwanted palm contact with the tablet screen or paper. The element is NOT required, but it has a very beneficial effect on the comfort of the creative process, since with a glove it is not necessary to constantly hold your hand in weight in order NOT to touch the touchpad. Available with one or two closed fingers, in different color variations.
Tablet stand. Another handy tool that allows you to hold the gadget at an angle convenient for you and at an optimal height. As a rule, the base of the device is rubberized, which ensures reliable adhesion of the structure and the tablet to the table surface. This accessory is also useful for other tasks, for example, installing a graphics tablet vertically to watch your favorite movie.
On the Ukrainian market, including on the TopGoods website, there are accessories for graphic tablets of different price categories.
