What happens to your body when you go on a 7-day water only fast? (2024)

Most people can give up their diet for fruits, sugar, or chocolate, but have you ever wondered what happens to your body if you give up everything except water? “A seven-day water fast entails giving up all meals and drinking solely water throughout that time,” said Dr Babina N.M, chief medical officer, Jindal Naturecure Institute.

As such, what changes occur in the body? Is it sustainable for longer periods? We decided to reach out to experts.

Laksh*ta Jain, clinical dietitian and founder, NUTR, Delhi explained that many religions in India, like Jainism, have been practicing water fasting for a long time. “Recently, Western studies have shown interest in the potential benefits of a 7-day water fast, especially regarding cancer. Yes, there can be issues like not getting enough nutrients, imbalances in electrolytes, and losing muscle if fasting for too long. However, if done for a short time and with care, it might have some benefits,” said Jain.

Jain mentioned that on the first day of water fasting, your body can act like a cleanser. “On the second day, you might feel very light. But from the third day, your body may start slowing down. If your body feels okay, you can continue, but if not, it is important to stop,” said Jain.

Explaining the changes in detail, Dr Babina listed the following:
“During a seven-day water fast, the following broad physiological and possible impacts could manifest,” said Dr Babina.

Autophagy: The body uses fasting to trigger an autophagic process that eliminates damaged cells and replaces them with healthier ones. Cellular health may benefit from this in the future, said Dr Babina.

Ketosis: The body may go into a state of ketosis during a period of fasting, during which it begins using fat for energy rather than carbs. This is a normal metabolic process that takes place while you fast.

Weight loss: A seven-day fast is likely to cause weight loss since it lowers caloric intake and forces the body to burn fat and stored glycogen for energy, mentioned Dr Babina.

Blood sugar control: Insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation may both be enhanced by fasting.

“Before trying an extended fast, those with diabetes or other metabolic abnormalities should speak with their healthcare professional,” said Dr Babina.

Detoxification: According to some supporters, fasting aids in the body’s detoxification by removing accumulated toxins. Nonetheless, there is little scientific proof to back up this assertion, as the body already has detoxification processes in place, asserted Dr Babina.

Energy levels: As the body becomes used to using alternate fuel sources, energy levels may initially drop. When starting a water fast, some people may feel tired, lightheaded, or agitated, cautioned Dr Babina.

Electrolyte imbalance: Prolonged fasting may result in electrolyte abnormalities, which can cause symptoms including weakness, cramping in the muscles, or erratic heartbeats. “It’s critical to keep an eye on electrolyte levels and, if needed, think about supplementing,” said Dr Babina.

Mental clarity: While some people report better attention and mental clarity when fasting, others may find it difficult to concentrate, mentioned Dr Babina.

Digestive system rest: When a person fasts, their digestive system is spared from breaking down food, which frees up energy for other bodily functions including regeneration and repair.

If you have health issues like high blood pressure or blood sugar, it is crucial to do this under guidance, experts urge. “If you are doing it on your own, pay attention to what your body tells you,” said Jain.

Who must not do it at all?

It’s crucial to stress that not everyone should fast, particularly for an extended length of time. Dr Babina said, “Before undertaking any extended fast, people with pre-existing medical illnesses, women who are pregnant or nursing, and people who have a history of eating disorders should speak with a healthcare provider.”

In addition, to prevent stomach problems, breaking a fast should be done carefully and gradually. Always put your health and wellbeing first, and when in doubt, see a specialist.
