The next time you ask for a drink at the bar, be warned that the co*cktail you order will say just as much about you as the way you are dressed or even what you say. The bartender will know in an instant if you are a seasoned imbiber or a naif who has not yet gotten much further than rummaging around his parents' liquor cabinet.

Ordering a martini will definitely tell most bartenders you are not without your chops when it comes to downing a co*cktail or three. This is the most pure of all mixed drinks. It is all about the alcohol and the balance of the ingredients, and there is nowhere to hide if it is badly prepared.

However, there are now so many styles being made alongside the traditional gin variety, even the type of martini you order is going to reveal your innermost secrets and tell your server if they need to prepare your drink properly or just give you any old boozy slop in a glass to shut you up for a while.

A Gin Martini

If you’re ordering a gin martini, you’re probably a classic guy. You know what you like – and it’s usually the only way you like it. Don’t get me wrong: there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Knowing what you like is a great characteristic and you should run with it.

A Vodka Martini

Even though the word “martini” has become a reference for a whole range of drinks, there is still something about overhearing someone ask for a “vodka martini” that makes me wince, and I know many bartenders feel the same way.

Many people I know order this because they don’t like gin even though gin is, at its heart, just a flavored vodka. Ordering this drink simply tells the bartender that the customer doesn’t like anything that actually has any taste at all and that they are just interested in getting plastered. In which case the bartender could probably get away with serving them paint thinner, as long as it is nice and cold and served with an olive.

An Appletini

As far as I am concerned, the apple martini,or “appletini,” as it has been dubbed, is one of the true low points of co*cktail-making history. But if you like it, go for it. The Shrek-like hue may be enough to put some people off, but it shows you're willing to stand your ground and order what you enjoy.

A "Shaken, Not Stirred" Martini

Asking for your martini to be made in the “Bondian” fashion (I just made up that word; I think it could catch on) is as appalling as making jokes about explosives at airport security. Although there are, of course, genuine reasons some serious co*cktail lovers might request their martini to be made this way (dilution, coldness), the majority of people who do so are genuinely under the impression that the bartender will be amused. For the record, they probably won’t be.

A Cosmopolitan

Ordering a Cosmopolitan is pretty much the international sign of a Sex and the City fan. Whether you’re out with your girlfriend playing Mr. Big to her Carrie Bradshaw, or you simply want a sweet, alcohol-packed beverage, this is a playful drink that will give you a buzz in a hurry. While it’s considerably underrated, those who knock the bright pink drink have clearly never tried one – and if you order it more often than not, you’re probably the life of the party, someone who prefers getting what you like over worrying about what people may think. And that’s a great thing.

A Dirty Martini

If you order a very dirty martini, it may suggest you don’t actually like martinis (or you just really like olive brine). There’s nothing wrong with a healthy pour of olive brine; it pulls the flavors of the gin and vermouth together seamlessly – but you already knew that. The extra salty flavors might also suggest that you prefer added flavor to your life in general – from jump scare films to white water rafting, whatever you can do to get the juices flowing, you’ll do it.

A 50/50 Martini

A 50/50 martini, or equal parts gin and vermouth, probably suggest that you like having order in your life. You live in a minimal, clean condo building, you’ve probably been practicing the Marie Kondo method before anyone had ever heard of Marie Kondo. Ordering equal parts vermouth and gin can also mean you like to take it slow – you don’t feel the need to get sloshed after just one or two drinks, and you probably also alternate your drinks with cups of water and rarely get a hangover.

An Espresso Martini

If your go-to drink is an espresso martini, especially as an aperitif, rather than a post-dinner treat, you’re probably a pretty busy guy. You don’t have time to separate your caffeine from your booze and you’re well aware of it. You like your drink to fuel you rather than take the edge off because after happy hour finishes, you’re back to work making power moves.
