I love a good martini and to me the dirtier, the better. In case you are wondering what makes a dirty martini, dirty, well let me tell you. It’s a salty, savory co*cktail that uses the brine from a jar of olives traditionally, but I’ve made it even dirtier by adding an unexpected kick to this co*cktail. Not only do I use olive brine here, but I also use just a touch of the brine from a jar of pepperoncini peppers. The peppers give it a slight kick and I think it really takes this martini to the next level. Making your own extra dirty martinis at home is not only easy, but delicious too!
As far as the alcohol goes in a dirty martini, you can choose to use vodka or gin. I like them both, so really its just a personal preference here on which liquor you prefer. You can also add a splash of dry vermouth if you have it, but don’t worry, it will be delicious without it too. You can also adjust the amount of “dirty” to your liking as well. Some people like mostly vodka or gin with just a splash of olive juice brine, but I am more of a half and half kind of girl. I love them extra extra dirty! One thing that is a non-negotiable is a chilled glass, preferably straight from the freezer. You want to serve this martini up extra extra cold.
For olives, you can use whatever green types you have on hand, and if they are stuffed with blue cheese, or feta, or banana peppers, or even jalapeños, I say go for it! I personally love a dirty martini with a charcuterie board, deviled eggs, or something like a shrimp co*cktail. It’s the perfect happy hour drink to serve with a little nibble. However, I think it’s also great to serve up on a steak night.
