Where to find NumLock?
The trouble is that in different models, NumLock on a laptop can be in very different places. And it can be called in different ways (for example, NumLKm NmLk and so on).
The first step is to take a close look at the keyboard. If there is a numeric keypad, the required key will be located in the area of the numeric keypad. If there is such a block, then the button should be looked for directly on the right side of the keyboard. It is usually at the top.
If there are buttons with SIMilar inscriptions, then you should press them, the trace SIMultaneously with the state of the indicators. If one of them turned on, then you definitely found the right button. Sometimes, to switch to the numeric keypad, you need to hold down a key combination (this policy is usually found on laptops from Acer). You need to hold down the function key (usually denoted by the letters Fn and is located somewhere near the space bar) and the corresponding button at the top of the keyboard. If this does not help, then you should read the instructions. It should describe all the function buttons.
How to determine if a key is activated?
Most laptops have special indicators that indicate the transition of the laptop keyboard to one mode or another. So, for example, there is an LED showing the active CapsLock button, which is responsible for writing uppercase letters. The same situation is with NumLock on a laptop. Take a closer look at the indicators. And if something is on except for the LED of the processor, and the letters are of a normal size, then this is a 100% guarantee that NumLock is on. You just need to turn it off. But first you need to find it. If you have a numeric keypad, checking the NumLock status is even easier. The fact is that there is a special “0” button on this panel. It also plays the role of a comma when typing. If it works, then NumLock is enabled.
What is NumLock?
This “magic” button turns on the numeric keypad. Even if that is missing. Not clear? Explaining. Some keyboards have a dedicated numeric block, which makes it more comfortable to work with numbers. It is usually disabled by default and cannot be used. However, there is a NumLock key on the laptop that activates the number pad. If you press it, the number buttons become active. Although ordinary users usually DO NOT like entering numbers from this panel. Accountants and other narrow specialists suffer from this.
However, there are also such cases that there is NumLock on a laptop, but there is a digital block. What then? Then the function of the digital block is performed by the first buttons of the keyboard (u, c, v, k, f, s, y, and so on). Sometimes the user gets confused when numbers appear instead of letters. And this just indicates the included digital pad. Where is NumLock on my laptop and how do I turn it off? Let’s talk about this.
Numlock on a laptop. Where to find?
Users who have just bought a laptop do not really understand the names and functions of the keys. Therefore, they are forced to search the Internet for information related to the laptop keyboard. You always need to know what one or another button is for. For, out of ignorance, you can do such things that you will have to reinstall the operating system. One of these tricky keys is NumLock on a laptop. This button is often very difficult to find. Especially if the laptop keyboard is made in some “own” style. Let’s try to understand this issue.
So, we have sorted out the question of how to find the NumLock key on a laptop. I would like to note that a lot here depends on the specific manufacturer. Often this button is located in such a place that you cannot immediately understand. You need to carefully examine the keyboard and look for something called NumLock or NmLk. It is also worth paying attention to the indicators when pressing this or that button. All these actions will help you find the right key with an almost one hundred percent guarantee.
Where is the Delete button and other responses
The Delete button is perhaps the most intuitive for users. It is easily translated from English and does exactly what it means: “crosses out”, “deletes”, “destroys”. That is why the Delete button is actively used by everyone.!
Where is and what the Delete button looks like on a laptop, almost no questions.
Where to find the delete button on the keyboard
Depending on the manufacturer of the Windows keyboard, the delete key looks like this:
- Wide arrow with a cross.
Finding her is easy. It is located in the group of service keys between blocks with numbers and letters. Or located in the upper right corner of the laptop keyboard.
By the way, there are two Del keys on a full-fledged computer keyboard. the second is located on “.” digital block. Its activation is a separate task! For this Delete to work, you need to disable the “Num Lock” button. Then it will work.
It’s harder to figure out how to uninstall on a Mac keyboard. Here either this key is not visible, or its function differs from the usual one. So where is the Delete button on a Mac?
- Happening. There is a Delete button, but it erases the character not at the cursor, but in front of it. It’s not a mistake! In the Apple version, the Delete key acts as the Backspace key: deletes characters in front of the cursor. To achieve the usual work, you need to press the combination “Fn” “Delete”.
- Happening. Delete comments buttons. Absolutely. Then we find the key on which “Backspace” is written or “Left arrows” are drawn in the upper right part of the keyboard. And we use it in combination with Fn. “Fn” “Delete”.
It’s SIMple. You just need to practice a little and adapt. Now let’s see how functional Del is and where it can come in handy.!
How else can you delete something unnecessary?
- Backspace. deletes what is in front of the cursor;
- Ctrlz / I. a keyboard shortcut for undoing recent actions, in particular for deleting the input made.
- Ctrlх / H. works on selected areas, Cut, that is, delete, all Selected data.
- A semicircular arrow on the top menu bar in many programs. undo the last action or several actions and, accordingly, delete the work already done.
- Dragging objects with the mouse to the desktop basket.
But Delete doesn’t always help. Sometimes it stops working. What to do in this case and how to reanimate the assistant?
How the word will change after clicking the Delete button
While we were figuring out the location of the keys, we have already touched on the topic: what is it for and what the Delete button on the keyboard means. Deletion, deletion.
Del helps user to delete:
- Symbols in documents, reports;
- Desktop folders and files;
- Letters from an e-mail box;
- Any objects selected by users.
over, in documents “Divide” erases what is located after the cursor. A letter, a number, a picture, an extra space. it doesn’t matter. Anything after the cursor will be deleted.
Why is the Delete button not working on a laptop?
The Delete button does NOT delete. What should I do? Solve the problem consistently, because the keys don’t just turn off.
- Launching antivirus software. Malware can block standard keyboard functions.
- Removing the latest installed programs and utilities from your computer. They may have caused the crash and caused the problem.
- SharpKeys remapping program. It will need to be installed and run as Administrator. If there is something in the list, this “something” needs to be removed.
- Vacuum cleaner. The keyboard needs to be carefully vacuumed, dust and debris removed from under the keys.
None of the options helped? One way. to service.
What to do if the Delete button does not work in AutoCAD
If AutoCAD DOES NOT delete with the Delete button, it’s bad! Indeed, on “Divide”. in addition to directly deleting. About assigned and the function of canceling the last performed operation, which is important for any editing. And it’s also bad that some other AutoCAD features probably stopped working with the removal.
Problem is fixed by enabling preselection mode.
For this you need:
- Type in the command line the word “Options” or “Settings” and open the corresponding window.
- Find the “Selection” tab, then the “Selection modes” section and tick the “Preselection” item.
- Click the “Apply” button.
After THESE SIMple things, the necessary functionality should be restored.
The Delete button is a very convenient key to use. Always at hand. Performs clear and SIMple actions. Almost never breaks or glitches. Miracle, not function!
How to replace keys on a laptop?
In laptop owners, a common problem periodically arises. a key (or several at once) flew off. This happens for many reasons: careless actions, pets, children’s games, falling of the device, etc. Do not rush to the service center, because replacing the buttons is a SIMple procedure that you can do yourself.
Some keys must be removed immediately when the laptop is flooded with liquid. To get the buttons is not a problem: you just need to pry the key with a sharp object, for this a small screwdriver or knife is suitable. But putting them back on later is quite problematic. To restore the keyboard, you need to familiarize yourself with the design of each individual button.
Single key design
All laptops are different, but the principle of fastening the buttons, as well as their design, are approximately the same. On the back of each panel there are several fasteners for the pressing mechanism (rocker, lift, latch). If the button falls off without a rocker, then it will NOT be difficult to put it back: you just need to slightly press the button, send the fasteners to the corresponding grooves.
Installing a flying button
The situation is somewhat more complicated if the part breaks, flying off together with the retainer. To complete the repair, you will need:
- Detach the retainer from the key.
- Paste it in place.
- Lightly press to set the button (press to clicks).
The fall of heavy objects sometimes causes the bindings on the keyboard itself to bend, which support the rocker with the key. They are made of flexible aluminum so they can be easily repaired. It is important NOT to damage these aluminum mounts, otherwise assembling the keyboard will be extremely problematic. This can only be done at the service center.
When installing SEPARATE buttons, special efforts are not necessary: the keys are placed in their usual place with a slight click. Strong pressure should be avoided to avoid damaging the plastic mounts.
Installing large buttons
Some keys (Ctrl, Shift, etc.) are large. A metal stabilizer is used to ensure even pressure. Changing such a button is a little more difficult: before installation, you need to start the fasteners of the iron bracket.
The space bar is attached to two locking mechanisms at once, and a metal stabilizer is also used. But this does not make the “space” setting any more difficult.
In some cases, the rocker (attachment mechanism) will fly apart. Careless disassembly or a dropped heavy object will lead to unforeseen situations. Despite its small size, the fastening mechanism is very SIMple and consists of only two parts. The retainer can be easily assembled using a needle, toothpick or nail file.
When installing the keys yourself, you should be extremely careful. Fragile plastic fasteners are small, so they can be easily damaged. Excessive efforts should be avoided so as not to break the button. Otherwise, repairing the keyboard will cost much more.
Function keys on a laptop keyboard are almost always present. If we are talking about equipment produced by well-known manufacturing brands. Acer, Lenovo, ASUS. Consider what each is responsible for. There are 12 function keys in total. They are located above all the others. Examine what they are responsible for.
The F1 key is almost always programmed to invoke help. In the operating system or in some separate program. This function can be said to be the same for all PC models. The keyboard is used for a laptop HP, Lenovo, or ASUS. No difference. In some cases, if the built-in help file is not provided by the program, pressing F1 can command the computer to load the software manufacturer’s website with the necessary information.
Traditional F2. Keyboard keys of a laptop or “desktop” to rename the selected file or folder.
The F3 button in most cases is responsible for calling the Windows search engine. Downloading its common interface, using which you can search for files all over the computer, or local. In a separate window. If the folder is open. Then the search will be conducted by the objects located in it, if the browser window is active or, say, Word, then by the text on the page.
The F4 key is mainly adapted for using third-party file wrappers. Such as, for example, Total Commander. Its usefulness in Windows is estimated by many experts as not obvious for centuries. But you can argue with this opinion: I pressed F4, say, in the browser, you can open the address term. It is faster than a SIMilar action with a mouse.
The F5 key is used to quickly refresh the contents of the application window, desktop, or Windows Explorer. At the same time, in third-party file shells, its use is, as a rule, completely different. For example, in Total Commander, using this key on the laptop or “desktop” keyboard, files and folders are moved.
The F6 key has approximately the same functionality as the F4 key. True, in this case, as a rule, the list with the history of sites in the address bar of the browser is not activated.
Some buttons on the keyboard of the laptop and desktop. F7, F8, F9, and F12 do not have a strong functional binding. Depending on the specific program, or the model of the device, they can be programmed for different commands. This is exactly the case when we can observe the disSIMilarity of technologies used by brands-manufacturers of equipment or programs.
In turn, the meaning of the keyboard keys of a laptop or “desktop” F10 and F11 is sufficiently standardized. When it comes to using them on Windows. The F10 button is responsible for opening the application menu. F11 is usually programmed to switch windows from normal to full screen and vice versa.
The functions of the keys on the laptop keyboard have distinctive specifics: as a rule, actions are programmed in them, implying their combination with a specific Fn button, which in most cases is absent on the keyboard of “desktops”. Now we will consider the features of working with them.
ALT keyboard shortcuts
One of the basic keys on the keyboard, used when activating various functions in hot mode. ALT. What possibilities are opened by pressing it in combination with other keys? Among the most notable features. Activation, or, DEACTIVATION of the file panel: for this you need to use the combination of ALT and P.
The combination of ALT and TAB allows you to quickly navigate between windows of active applications running in Windows. The ALT key in combination with the UP button allows you to climb higher in the structure of open windows with folders. The combination of ALT and F4 closes the active application window, or exits the program or computer game. The combination of ALT and space allows you to open the context menu of the running window.
Hotkeys and WIN button
In most cases, the buttons on a laptop or desktop keyboard contain the WIN key. This button looks like a proprietary Microsoft checkbox. It is, in a way, adapted to the Windows operating system. By the way, it was recently introduced into the structure of keyboards (if we compare it with the evolution of the development of the corresponding hardware component of a PC). In 1995, after the Windows 95 operating system entered the market. Secondly, it is usually not functional. Although, this is not always the case. In many modern open source operating systems, the WIN button functions are fully implemented. Still, the trend reflecting the standardization of technologies is characteristic not only for the hardware field, but also for software. Let’s consider what possibilities are opened by using the WIN key in combination with other buttons.
If you press the combination of WIN and UP, then you can expand the active application window to full screen. In turn, if you replace UP with DOWN in this combination. The window will collapse or return to its original size. Pressing WIN and the left arrow moves the active window to the left of the screen. If you press the “right” button, then the window will move in the same direction. The combination of WIN and HOME allows you to SIMultaneously minimize, or expand all windows, except for the one that acts as an active one. With the combination of WIN and E, you can open Windows Explorer. You can enlarge or reduce the image on the screen by using the combination of WIN and the “” or “-” buttons. The combination of WIN and F starts the file search system.
Almost all keyboards designed for PCs in the IBM architecture and running under Windows, and therefore also in laptops, have so-called “hot keys”. They are designed to quickly activate some hardware or software function of the OS, which is usually longer and more difficult to call using mouse actions. Consider the range of the most popular features, which give “hotkeys” in Windows 7. One of the most popular operating systems today. Note that the shortcuts below work if we have any input device at our disposal. “desktop” version, or ASUS laptop keyboard. The purpose of the “hot” keys, in general, is the same on all devices. Provided, of course, that Windows is installed on them.
Therefore, it does not matter, provided that we are talking about the same platform that we have at our disposal. Buttons in the “desktop” version or laptop keyboard. The key assignments will be almost the same in all cases. However, there are still some nuances. To a large extent, they are caused, first of all, by the difference in the dimensions of the “desktop” and the laptop. At the disposal of the user of an ordinary PC, as a rule. The whole table. It can accommodate a very large keyboard. In the most daring design formats. Another thing. Laptop keyboard. The purpose of the buttons on it, although practically the same as on the “desktop”. The buttons have to be placed extremely compactly. As a result, the laptop manufacturer may decide to, in principle, remove some groups of keys.
Does the labeling of the keys on a laptop keyboard differ from one brand to another? For the most part, there is. And this is also largely due to the marketing factor: the brand-manufacturer wants users, relatively speaking, to get used to what is at their disposal. The laptop keyboard “Lenovo” could easily adapt to a SIMilarly hardware component from ASUS, and vice versa. Differences, if any, they usually lie in the design of the buttons, their height, shape, color, material of manufacture. The keyboard for Acer laptop is thus almost identical to counterparts from ASUS, HP, Dell and other brands, based on the purpose of the buttons.
However, it is useful to know the key features of the distribution of functions associated with specific keys. Never mind. We are talking about buttons adapted for the “desktop”, or the laptop keyboard is being studied. Assignment of keys of functional groups, especially in combination with others. A very interesting area of studying the capabilities of the computer. So let’s start by examining the respective types of buttons.
Laptop keyboard: key assignment. Hotkeys
Traditional keyboard. A laptop, or a “desktop”, despite the dominance and prevalence of “sensors” on smartphones and tablets. When using Which, people, at times, begin to forget what the keys are. A subject that is in widespread demand. Stylish and ergonomic keyboard. A welcome detail of the computer interior of any IT enthusiast.
Ease of use of the corresponding hardware component of the PC, not just its appearance. Also an important criterion for the comfort of the computer owner. Keyboard. It is, historically, the first PC control; the mouse was later invented. And later, the keys of the device. Especially in combination with others. By default, a very efficient and functional tool in the hands of the user. There is a version that the technological features of “desktops” and laptops predetermine some difference between the capabilities of keyboards, with the help of which the corresponding types of devices are controlled.
Does the type of computer keyboard matter in terms of key functionality? Is there a difference between the standardization policies in this aspect carried out by different laptop brands? What keyboard shortcuts can we highlight as Most useful?
Keys on laptop and desktop: comparison
As a rule, there is no fundamental difference between the way the keyboard of a laptop and a “desktop” is structured. This is understandable. Computer makers strive to release Appropriate controls, Adhering to standards so that people are more willing to buy technology, rather than fearing that they will have to adapt their skills to the new key layout. It is worth noting, however, that this thesis is true if a computer in the most popular architecture today is taken into consideration. IBM PC. There are other standards for PC hardware and software. Such as, for example, Macintosh.
The Fn key on a laptop is usually highlighted in a Separate color. For example, white or blue. So that the user can easily find it on the keyboard. There are usually one or two such keys on the device. Pressing Fn in its pure form, as a rule, does not imply any function. But its combination with function keys is programmed for a large number of useful actions. The exact one depends on the brand of laptop. An ASUS laptop keyboard may thus differ in terms of Fn key activation from a SIMilarly hardware element in Lenovo or Acer devices. However, experts identify several common patterns for all computers in relation to the use of the capabilities of Fn. Consider them.
Combined with the F1 key, the Fn key can, for example, instruct the computer to shutdown (power off). This saves time when comparing this operation with a SIMilar procedure carried out using a mouse.
In combination with the F2 key, the Fn key in some cases allows you to call up a window for settings related to energy saving. This option can be useful if, for example, it was found that the laptop is running out of battery power, and it urgently needs to be switched to another, more economical mode of operation.
The Fn key on a laptop in combination with the F3 button can be responsible for turning wireless interfaces on and off. For example Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. This is useful if, for example, the computer case has hardware switches that can be used to perform SIMilar actions.
When used with the F4 button, the Fn key is typically programmed to tell the computer to go to sleep (no power off). In some brands of laptops, the same combination is also responsible for “waking up” the computer.
Using a combination of Fn and F5 on most models of equipment, you can activate or deactivate the signal output to an external display connected via a wired interface to the card. over, on many laptops, this is the only way to carry out this kind of action using the hardware method. An alternative can be a rather long procedure for outputting a signal with software settings.
Turning off the monitor, as a rule, allows a combination of Fn and F6 or F7. This key assignment is useful if, for example, the user decided to leave the computer for a while. In this case, you can save electricity by turning off the display.
Quite a useful combination. Fn and F8. It allows you to enable or disable the sound on the computer (in this case, the current sound level is not reset. After pressing this combination again, the settings are restored). This key assignment is useful if, for example, someone called a person on the phone, you urgently need to answer, and loud music is playing on the PC.
Many laptops have the Touch Pad temporarily disabled. A built-in touch-type device that performs functions SIMilar to a mouse. This action can be performed by pressing the combination of Fn and F9.
If you use a combination of Fn and F10, you can change the keyboard layout. This is useful if, for example, more familiar keys do not work for some reason.
If the laptop has a numeric keypad (usually located on the right), then you can activate or deactivate it by using the combination of Fn and F11.
The combination of Fn and F12 can be programmed for a fairly wide range of actions, depending on the specific computer model. An HP laptop keyboard may include a SIMilar hardware component from Acer. Other. In some cases, this combination implies some programmatic action. For example, activating the function of moving the screen, which works, in particular, in Excel.
Also note that the Fn key can be programmed for any function in combination Not only with the buttons with the index F, but also in combination with the usual ones located below on the keyboard. Again, it all depends on the device model. ASUS laptop keyboards may have their own rules; for Lenovo they may be completely different. For example, in some device models, the combination of Fn and the key on which the number 1 (and the exclamation mark) is displayed can adjust the brightness level of the display. The combination of Fn and the button with the number 2 (@ sign) can in turn control the sound volume.
So we have studied what features the laptop keyboard is characterized by, the purpose of the functional type keys. Let’s move on to the study of the most interesting category of buttons. These are called “hot keys”. What are their features?
Standardization of “software
Let’s note the most important nuance. All the above-described patterns in the aspect of keyboard shortcuts are fully functional when working in Windows. If the user has a different operating system at his disposal. For example, Linux or Google OS, then there may be discrepancies in the aspect of binding key combinations to certain functions. At the same time, as many IT experts note, technology universalization is observed Not only at the hardware level. With regard to the assignment of keys (we said about this at the beginning of the article), but also in the programmatic direction. That is, if we talk about the newest versions of the OS, other than Windows, then in many of them the aLGorithms for implementing “hot” functions or using, say, the WIN keys, are SIMilar to the theme (if completely identical) that are present in the most popular in the world operating system.
Also note that historically Windows. NOT the first operating system for which the keys we studied today were adapted. By the time this OS entered the market, there were keyboards with the location of functional and other buttons. Identical to how we see them now, or in a very SIMilar way. They have existed for more than a decade. So, it is more fair to say that the functionality of many keys is dictated not only by the leadership of Windows, but also by historical prerequisites.
SHIFT does not work on laptop keyboard
One of the most important components of any computer is the keyboard. The peculiarity of laptops is that it will be very difficult to change it in case of any problems. in any case, it is much more difficult than SIMply removing the plug of the old device and inserting the plug of the new one, as is done with a stationary PC.
What to do if one or several buttons suddenly stopped working on the keyboard, for example, the top row? Is it possible to fix the situation on my own and what is needed for this? You will learn about all this in this article.
Physical methods include pressing certain keys, cleaning, and actions associated with the need to disassemble the device.
In the first case, you can try to hold down Fn and Num Lock. Typically this combination will return the control panel to the desired mode.
If this does not help, you need to remove the keyboard with a screwdriver. Before doing this, be sure to turn off the device and remove the power supply from it. In the presence of obvious mechanical damage, you will need to replace the keyboard cable.
There is a microcontroller under the plate. It should be cleaned and dried thoroughly.
Why SHIFT and other buttons on a laptop may NOT work
The first step is to determine the cause of the problem in order to decide which sequence of actions will be needed to fix it.
One of the most common causes is a malfunction of the keyboard itself. This can be due to both natural wear and tear of the device over time, and incorrect connection.
In addition, blockages may occur, especially if you have a habit of eating or drinking while using the computer. Dirt getting into the internal structure of the keyboard often leads to the failure of one or even a whole series of keys. zero, arrows, Ctrl, Shift. The latter are located at the very edge of the laptop and are very useful and frequently used.
The lack of key action can also be associated with the presence of various viruses in the system. In such cases, the key can either execute NOT a complete list of commands intended for it, or even something that it is not obliged to execute.
ATTENTION! The operation of the button is also influenced by the operating system. if this is a pirated version, then you should not be surprised at the presence of this and any other problems.
Or it may be that some settings in the system are set incorrectly. This problem is the SIMplest solution of all those presented above. you just need to enter the settings and change some important parameters that have a significant impact on the keyboard.
What to do if the Shift button does not work
When the Shift key does not work, the first step is to thoroughly diagnose the device and check the system for viruses.
It is quite SIMple to do this. you need to use a special scanner, which is shared by the manufacturers of the most famous and trusted antivirus vendors. After checking, it is recommended to install one of them in order to further protect yourself from the appearance of any malicious programs and utilities.
Now remove the found viruses.
Some laptops have special keyboard shortcuts that make it easy to accidentally switch the keyboard mode. As a result, some keys will be either locked or reassigned. this means that they will perform completely different, and not their intended function. In this case, you need to return to the old mode by finding the hotkeys that work on your laptop model.
If the keyboard is clogged, it must be disassembled and cleaned thoroughly. On the Internet there are a large number of instructions for disassembling keyboards for each laptop, which can vary significantly from each other.
The same thing will need to be done if the control panel is broken. It may be necessary to replace one of the contacts or a ribbon cable inside.
IMPORTANT! If you have a pirated version of the operating system, you will need to reinstall it. To do this, you need to find a high-quality version in which there will be no problems with pressing the button.
Actions if multiple buttons on the keyboard do not work
In general, all actions aimed at restoring the keyboard operation can be divided into two groups:
- Physical methods;
- Programming methods.
If several keys do not work at once. Ctrl, with letters, then the keyboard will not have to be completely changed. Therefore, we will consider in detail some of the ways to return it to operation.
Besides reinstalling, you can also try changing some keyboard settings. It is possible that the drivers are outdated. in this case, you just need to download them from the manufacturer’s official website for your laptop model and Windows version.
In the Control Panel, you can find “Keyboard” and make sure that all the necessary functions are connected.
In addition, there is a way to return the system to the level where everything worked correctly. To do this, you need to find the “System Restore” item in the Control Panel. After that, be sure to restart your computer.
Now you know why the keys on the laptop keyboard may NOT work and what you can do yourself in this case.
Position of the button on the laptop keyboard
Keys of this kind are called modifiers, they change the behavior of other buttons and the mouse, thereby expanding the functionality of the keyboard. All input devices have two “shift” buttons, one on each side of the alphanumeric block, in the second row from the bottom. The left one is located between Ctrl and Caps Lock, the right one is between the Ctrl and Enter keys, next to the Up arrow. On a laptop, the Shift button is marked with an upward-pointing arrow outline, without the usual label for freestanding desktop keyboards.
The key appeared in the 19th century: in 1878 the Remington No. 2 typewriters went on sale, where the carriage shift mechanism was first used to print capital letters. The creator of the technology, engineer Byron Brooks, received a patent for his invention in 1875. The word “shift” itself in translation from English means “shift”, which is why such a name was assigned to the key. The button was placed on the side to make the mechanism easier to use. At first, it was placed only on one side, and then duplicated on the other.
This is how a second key appeared with identical capabilities. This was done so that the input of Uppercase letters does not force the typing person to interrupt each time and move his hand. If the required letter was located far from the carriage shift button. The cars gained popularity among buyers, so the mechanism and the key were used on the second models.
When the first computers appeared, it was decided NOT to come up with a new keyboard design, but to use the existing one. Over time, the key also found its way onto laptop keyboards. And also personal computers from Apple, where it is located in the same place and performs SIMilar functions. You can recognize it by the icon in the form of an empty arrow or the inscription “Shift”.
Location of the “Shift” button on the keyboard in a laptop
Users have to press the “shift” button on a laptop often, both while typing and to activate additional functions. At the same time, the knowledge of PC owners in the capabilities of the key is limited, although some useful combinations with it make it easier to work and speed up the execution of familiar tasks.
What is the “shift” button for?
Just like on typewriters, on laptops and PCs this key is held down to enter uppercase letters. In addition, with it auxiliary symbols become available, the images of which are smaller than the main ones and are located in the upper corners of the buttons: punctuation, mathematical and symbols traditionally used in programming.
The action is performed only when the key is pressed. If the Caps Lock button activates the Uppercase input mode, the effect of Shift is exactly the opposite: each time you press or hold, lowercase letters are printed. Auxiliary characters are entered without changes, Caps Lock does not affect them.
You can press any of the two symmetrically located buttons. left or right. The second shift key on the laptop keyboard is needed for the convenience of the user, but they function the same.
In addition to temporarily changing the case, the shift button on the laptop keyboard is needed to perform operations tied to the so-called hot keys. combinations of two or three keys. Clicking on one of these combinations launches a specific command and does not require the user to enter the OS or active program menu and search for the desired section or item for a long time.
Some combinations are known to a wide range of users, but others, and no less useful, are left without attention, although they could greatly SIMplify the work and save a lot of time.
Below are the combinations that include Shift.
Alt Shift (left). often used to switch layouts (from Russian to English and vice versa)
Ctrl Shift. an alternative to the previous combination;
“Shift” Tab. return to the previous item, line or object;
“Shift” Del. deleting an object without the possibility of recovery, as well as Cutting out an object or text;
“Shift” Insert. inserting the cut object or text;
“Shift” F10. opens the context menu of the selected object (as with the right mouse click)
“Shift” Home. selection of text from the cursor to the beginning of the line;
“Shift” End. SIMilar to the previous combination, but the text is highlighted until the end of the timeline.
“Shift” arrow “right”. selection of text or an object located at the position of the cursor;
“Shift” arrow “Left”. selection of text or an object to the left of the cursor;
Shift Up arrow. selects an object or text upward;

The Shift button on the laptop is located next to other modifier keys, so you can perform some of the combinations with one hand, although in other cases you will have to use your fingers with the other.
Mouse Embedding Combinations that are applicable to objects in the taskbar:
“Shift” left click on the program icon. opens another application window;
Ctrl Shift left click on the icon. launch a new window with administrator rights;
“Shift” right click on the shortcut. call the program menu;
“Shift” right click on the icon, collected in one group. call the window management menu.
Outside the taskbar, “shift” in combination with the mouse optimizes actions on objects:
Dragging while holding the button moves the file from one place to another;
Dragging while holding Ctrl Shift creates a shortcut to a file or folder;
Clicks with the left button while holding down “shift” select a group of objects located nearby.
There are additional key features that not all users know:
Pressing five times toggles sticky buttons on or off;
Pressing a key when inserting an optical medium into the drive blocks its automatic start (the disc can be opened in Explorer);
Holding the key for 8 seconds enables or disables input filtering in Windows (the option allows you to ignore too short and repetitive keystrokes, which occur by mistake or in a hurry)
Left Alt Shift in combination with Num Lock enable or disable keyboard cursor control;
Left Alt Shift and the pressed Print Screen button activate or deactivate high contrast mode (used for vision problems).
Knowing where the “shift” is on a laptop and skillfully using this key separately or as part of combinations is necessary for effective work with different applications. For special software We have developed our own keyboard shortcuts. These operations are listed in the user reference guides and only work properly in open and active application software windows.
Solving the problem with the disabled SHIFT key on a laptop
Turn off sticking and input filtering
The first function temporarily enables the ability to separate key presses such as SHIFT, CTRL and ALT. The second helps to eliminate double clicks. If they are activated, the shift may not work the way we are used to. To disable, do the following:
- Launch the “Run” (WinR) term and enter
In the “Control Panel” switch to the small icons mode and go to the “Accessibility Center”.
Click on the link “Making it easier to work with the keyboard”.
Go to sticking settings.
We remove all the jackdaws and click “Apply”.
We return to the previous section and select the input filtering settings.
Here we also uncheck the boxes shown in the screenshot.
If it was not possible to disable sticking in this way, then this can be done in the system registry.
- Run the registry editor (WindowsR. regedit).
- Go to the branch
We are looking for a key with the name “Flags”, right-click on it and select “Change”.
In the “Value” field, enter “506” without quotes and click OK. In some cases, you will need to enter “510”. Try both options.
Do the same in the branch
Many laptops have a keyboard mode in which some keys are locked or reassigned. It turns on using a specific keyboard shortcut. Below are several options for different models.
- Ctrlfnalt, then press SHIFT.
- Pressing both keys at the same time.
- Fnins (INSERT).
- Numlock or FnNumLock.
There are situations when, for some reason, the keys that turn off the mode are inactive. In this case, the following manipulation can help:
- Launch the standard Windows on-screen keyboard.

Go to the program settings with the “Options” or “Options”.
We put a daw in the checkbox next to the item “Enable numeric keypad” and click OK.
If the NumLock key is active (pressed), then click on it once.
If not active, then double-click. enable and disable.
Editing the registry
We have already written above about viruses that can remap keys. You or another user could have done this with the help of special software, which was successfully forgotten. Another special case is a keyboard crash after an online game session. We will NOT search for the program or find out after what events the changes have occurred. All changes are recorded in the parameter value in the system registry. To solve the problem, this key must be removed.
Create a system restore point before editing parameters

- Launch the Registry Editor using the Run menu command (WinR).
We are interested in two branches here. First:
Selecting the specified folder and check for the presence of the key with the name “Scancode Map” in the right part of the window.
If the key is found, then it must be deleted. This is done SIMply: by clicking on it in the list and pressing DELETE, after which we agree with the warning.
This was the key to the entire system. If it was not found, then you need to look for the same element in another branch that defines user parameters.
A clean boot of the operating system will help us identify and disable the service that is responsible for our problems. The process is quite long, so be patient.
- Go to the “System Configuration” section from the “Run” menu using the command
Switch to the tab with the list of services and turn off the display of Microsoft products, check the corresponding box.
Click the “Disable All” button, then “Apply” and restart the laptop. Checking the keys work.
Next, we need to identify the “bully”. This must be done if the shift began to work normally. We turn on half of the services in the “System Configuration” and reboot again.
In a situation where, after disabling all services, the shift did NOT work, you need to turn everything back on and pay attention to other methods.
The first thing to do when this problem appears is to check the laptop for viruses. Some malware is capable of reassigning keys by modifying system settings. You can identify and eliminate pests with the help of Special scanners. free programs from leading antivirus developers.
After the viruses have been found and removed, you may have to work with the system registry by removing the “extra” key. We will talk about this in the third paragraph.
SHIFT doesn’t work
There are several reasons for the failure of the SHIFT key. The main ones are key remapping, enabling limited mode or sticky. Next, we will analyze in detail each of the possible options and provide recommendations for troubleshooting.
The startup list is edited in the same place. in “System configuration”. The principle here is NOT different from a clean boot: we turn off all elements, reboot, and then we continue to work to obtain the desired result.
The essence of this method lies in the failure of system files and parameters to the state in which they were before the problem occurred. In this case, it is necessary to determine the date as accurately as possible and select the appropriate point.
