The iPhone camera, like a year ago, is good in the light and acceptable in the twilight. At the current module parameters, this is a clear ceiling, and Apple reached it several years ago. It is very good that the company understands this and improves the software. However, the experienced eye can still see all the “delights” of digital image enhancement, such as sharpening on wires, foliage and grass. The sensor and optics are simply not able to resolve such small details, so the program simply draws them. Looks believable from a distance.

As you can see from the laboratory test, the camera has practically not changed over the year. The slight differences between the two curves are just the result of the harder work of the program. over, such zeal is not always justified.
In this regard, the portrait mode works very interesting. Of course, it will not create a unique and beautiful boke, but it will help to highlight the person’s figure in the background. Advanced users of cameras with manual mode will certainly not see anything special in it, but smartphone users will notice that the camera is finally starting to shoot relatively adequately at night. Of course, the pictures by themselves did not become better, the program just learned to work more accurately with exposure, curves and saturation in night scenarios. The effects of slow shutter speeds and high ISO values have not gone away, and the pictures are still very noisy. However, in miniature they look pretty.
The left image can be easily obtained from the right one using the standard tools of the graphic editor: contrast, shadows, gamma, saturation. So there is no trick here. But for users who like to just shoot and lay out the frame, this is already a plus.
This year, an ultra-wide-angle module appeared in Apple smartphones. Making wide-angle optics at this size is a big risk. Even “adult” shirikovs sin with poor sharpness and detail at the frame periphery due to geometric distortions, and in such a form factor the negative effects will only intensify. However, the Apple programmers did a good job. you can see how hard it was for them to defeat the chromatic aberrations at the edges. Of course, it is better not to look at the edges and especially the corners of the frame, but for video shooting, for example, this quality is quite enough. Yes, and photography is not so bad at times: it all depends on the composition and on the size when viewed. It is better not to use this module at night, the night mode works well only on the main camera. The ultra-wide-angle sensor also makes a lot of noise, which, coupled with the low resolution of the optics, turns all the details into a mess.
Let’s add a few subjective impressions to the above.
First, the night mode does produce a wow effect. Yes, it is clear that miracles do not happen, but even on the smartphone screen you can see the difference between what was and what has become. In this case, the mode is activated automatically and the shutter speed is also selected by itself (although it can be adjusted if desired). The maximum shutter speed we noticed was 5 seconds. But more often. 1-3 seconds.
Secondly, the vaunted smooth switching between cameras still has one weak point. Yes, the transition is visually smooth, but as long as you move from 0.5 × to 1 ×, digital zoom works, that is, the picture deteriorates significantly. Therefore, it is better not to use it unnecessarily.
Also note that the front camera now shoots 4K video and 12 megapixel photos.
iPhone 11 is the direct successor to the iPhone XR. And, in fact, outwardly it differs very little, except, of course, the module with cameras. As with the XR, the smartphone comes in a range of color options. However, instead of blue and coral, the aforementioned purple and green appeared.
But the four matching colors. white, black, yellow and red (Product Red). now look different. They became less flashy, softer, milky, matte. For example, yellow is now more banana. And purple is light lilac with a gray tint. It looks much more restrained and noble.
The back surface is covered with glass, the front, of course, too. The location of the buttons and connectors has not changed compared to the iPhone XR. The main innovation is cameras. There are now two of them, they are taken out on a separate square transparent platform, where they also have a flash and an additional microphone, which was not there before.
Thanks to the cameras, the new iPhone can be easily distinguished from the previous ones. And the principle here is simple: if there are two of them and they stand separately, this is the iPhone 11, if there are three, then the iPhone 11 Pro / Max Pro. In general, not to be confused with predecessors.
True, this also means that new covers are needed. And here Apple’s assortment is still modest: in the case of the iPhone 11, you will have to choose from a transparent silicone version and an opaque colored silicone. There are no leather cases yet. Returning to the design, we note that, like the iPhone XR, the frame around the screen of the new item is much larger than that of its older counterparts. And this is not nitpicking, it just really catches the eye.

Over time, this indicator will worsen, but it’s still very, very good.

One of the key characteristics of the display is the type of matrix, and here we have fundamental differences.
The iPhone 11 screen is built on the Liquid Retina matrix. The name hides not a unique technology, but an ordinary IPS LCD panel, albeit of a very high quality. The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max use an OLED matrix, which Cupertino marketers have dubbed the Super Retina XDR. Does a pretty name match the quality of the picture? Let’s learn from the tests, but for now let’s say that the OLED screen allows you to realize a number of features that are not available for smartphones with IPS LCD. We talk about them in the next section.
The next mandatory test is color accuracy. To evaluate it, the color deviation coefficient, also known as DeltaE, is used. The average coefficient shows the color shift over the entire range, the maximum. in that part of the range where the shift is most pronounced. The lower the DeltaE coefficient, the better the color rendering.
In terms of color reproduction, the iPhone 11’s screen looks preferable. The average coefficient was 1.1, the maximum one rose to 2.4. Ideal transmission for a smartphone, which is largely due to the features of the IPS LCD panel.
The IPS LCD does not produce perfect blacks, but it does produce perfect whites, which is very important for color accuracy. Yes, the iPhone 11 screen does not break records for maximum brightness, but it gives a very correct picture in terms of color.
