An interface is a type of connector that connects a disk to a motherboard or computer, as well as the protocol over which data is exchanged. The interface determines the data transfer rate between the storage device and the processor, memory. The higher this parameter, the better, especially if you choose a hard drive for the system. Common interfaces are:
- For internal drives:
- SATA II (3Gb / s);
- SATA III (6 Gb / s).
The spindle speed affects the speed of writing and reading data. The higher it is, the better, but also the more expensive the device. For internal devices, the optimal spindle speed is 7200 r / s. Higher speeds will cost more. Winchesters with a spindle speed higher than 5400 r / s are noisy.
For external, this figure in most cases is 5400 r / s. That’s enough.
Winchester serves for five or seven years and sooner or later it gets hammered to the eyeballs. Therefore, it is not stingy, all gigabytes will come in handy. If the budget is limited, then take at least 1000 GB for data storage, and at least 500 GB for the system and programs.
External or internal
Devices are classified into internal and external hard drives. Internal ones are installed in the computer case and connected to the motherboard through a ribbon cable. The storage medium is protected by a metal case, while the lower part is most often open. External ones have a fully protected case and are connected to a computer via a USB interface.
If you need a hard drive for the system and programs, then take the internal one. They provide high speed data access. When it comes to storing information, it is better to take an external one. The access speed is slower, but such a drive is easy to connect to any computer, which cannot be said about the internal drive.
6 steps how to choose a hard drive
The hard disk is designed to store information, which is divided into two categories. programs and data that these programs use. Experts recommend storing data on one disk, and the operating system and programs on another. To store data, you need more space, and they are stored for a long time. For programs and the operating system, the interface and the speed of access to data are important, because the speed of the programs will depend on this.
How to choose a hard drive? Which hard drive is better? If a number of technical parameters that determine this choice.
Form factor refers to size in inches. This parameter is important for the internal hard drive, since the slots for placing the equipment are strictly standardized. There are two form factors on the market today:
- 2.5-inch HDD. used in laptops, and is also a common format for external drives;
- HDD 3.5 inches. used in stationary computers.
The hard disk buffer or cache is the built-in memory for storing data that the disk accesses most often. Winchesters are equipped with 16, 32 and 64 megabytes of cache. You will NOT see a big difference when working, but it is better to choose a disk with a cache of 32-64 MB.
Summarize. High-capacity, 1000 Mb or more, external drives with USB interfaces are suitable for storing information. If we are talking about an internal disk, then you do not need to save on volume either, the more, the better. For disks for the system and programs, high-speed disks from 500 GB, SATA III interface and a spindle rotation speed of 7200 r / s are better suited.

How to Increase the Memory Hard Drive on a Laptop
It is worth clarifying that you cannot increase the amount of memory Hard disk, you can only clear part of the occupied memory or replace the hard disk with another, more capacious.
Before you spend money on a new hard drive, try to clean up the old HDD from unnecessary files, sometimes this procedure helps to recover Significant volumes of the disk.
First you need to delete the files created by Windows.
To do this, open the “This Computer” (My Computer) window, right-click on the C drive, select “Properties”. In the window that opens, click “Disk Cleanup”. For your personal data, DO NOT worry, this method does not delete your photos, music, documents, games, etc., Only files created by Windows, which can be safely deleted.
Clean up drive C
The evaluation of the space to be reclaimed starts. Next, a window will automatically open in which you will need to put all the checkmarks.
Selecting files to clean up
Please note that the list with check marks is scrollable, so you need to scroll to the very end and check all the boxes. After that, we will see in the column “The amount of space to be freed” how much disk space we will be able to free this way. In our case, this is only 105 MB, since the computer is cleaned from the example on a regular basis, in your case the volume can be much larger. After setting all the checkboxes, click “OK”. “Delete files”, cleaning will begin, which may take some time (depending on the number of junk files, as well as the speed of the laptop). After completing the cleaning, click “Disk Cleanup” again, it gets into the same window where we checked the boxes, but now we need to click on the “Clean up system files” button.
Cleaning up system files on drive C
After evaluating the freed up space in the window that appears, also put all the checkmarks and click “OK”. In this way, sometimes it is possible to delete up to several gigabytes of unnecessary files, thus it is not bad to increase the free space on the Hard Disk.
Open Local drive C. Windows folder. SoftwareDistribution. Download. And we delete all files and folders that are in the Download folder.
Delete installation files for Windows updates from the Download folder
Thus, we successfully install the Windows update installation files, which have already been installed in the system and are no longer needed. Also in the SoftwareDistribution folder there is a DataStore folder, the contents of which can be painlessly cleaned, the updated history is stored in it. Do not forget, after THESE manipulations, it will empty the trash, because if this is not done, then the amount of free space will NOT increase.
Then you can search for and delete unused programs and games, which can take up a lot of space. To do this, right-click on Start and select “Applications and Features”. A list of all installed programs and games will open, click on unnecessary ones and click “Delete”.
Remove unnecessary programs in the Applications and Features window
Attention: if you are NOT sure what a particular program is needed for, then I advise you NOT to delete such unfamiliar programs, because. Sometimes you can delete something really necessary, for example, a program along with a driver for a device or some system components, without which some programs and games should not work.
Next, you need to use third-party programs to clean the disk from junk files. Follow the link to the official website of the CCleaner program https://www.Ccleaner.com/ru-ru/ccleaner/download/standard, save the file with the program, after downloading, open it and Install. After installation, open the program and translate it into Russian: in the left menu, click Options. Settings and in the Language field we find and select Russian.
We turn on the Russian language in the CCleaner program
Next, on the left, click on “Cleanup”. at the bottom right on the “Cleanup” button. OK.
Cleaning laptop from system junk files with CCleaner
After cleaning the junk files, I recommend cleaning the registry from errors. To do this, on the left, select “Registry”. “Search for problems”, after the end of the search, click on “Fix selected”, it is not necessary to save backups, therefore, in the window that appears, select “Net”.
Cleaning the registry with CCleaner
In the new window that appears, click on “Fix Selected”. Thus, we will be able to free up some more space on our local disk, as well as remove some errors.
If by these methods you did not manage to increase the free space to the desired level and the laptop did not start working faster, perhaps in this case you should think about buying and installing a more capacious and faster drive.
How to find a laptop hard drive
To choose the right hard drive, you need to consider 5 recommendations:
A clear difference between SATA and IDE connectors
At the moment, the sale is dominated by hard drives of the SATA 3 standard, therefore, if your laptop has an HDD of any SATA standard (1, 2, 3), feel free to buy SATA 3, they practically do not differ in cost. If a disk with an IDE connector is installed, then you will have to purchase only IDE.
Rotational speed. The most common (rpm): 5400 rpm, 5900 rpm, 7200 rpm, 10000 rpm. The higher the spindle speed, the faster the hard drive. But there are also disadvantages to this. HDDs with a higher rotational speed make more noise, heat up more and cost more (there is also an opinion that drives with a higher speed have a shorter lifespan, but we could not find official information on this). Most laptops are factory-installed with 5400 rpm HDDs. This speed is quite sufficient for storing files. movies, music, documents and others, but for the operating system it is preferable to choose something faster, then the laptop as a whole will work faster. The best option, as mentioned earlier, is to install an SSD for the operating system, and a hard drive with a speed of 5400 rpm for storing multimedia files. If it is supposed to use only one Hard disk (and for the system as well), then it is better to take a hybrid disk (HDD SSD), in extreme cases. HDD with a higher rotation speed.
1st row. regular hard drive, 2nd row. hybrid hard drive with small SSD
From the example above, you can see that both Hard Drives have the same volume (500 GB) and approximately the same cost. Wherein, the second option will be more preferable to purchase, as it has a built-in SSD, which will automatically store the most frequently used files, which will give a noticeable increase in speed. Also, the second option has a lower spindle speed (5400 rpm versus 7200 rpm in the first one), which is a little slower, but the presence of an SSD in this case compensates for the loss of speed, and operation at lower speeds will reduce noise and HDD heating.
Types of hard drives for laptops
So, what are the options for installing in place of your old Hard Drive? Types of internal storage:
Hard disk drive (HDD) is the oldest and slowest type of internal storage available today, information is stored on magnetic disks.
It looks like a hard drive from the inside
- Cheaper than SSD and hybrid hard drives (on average, a 1000 GB HDD costs as a 120 GB SSD)
- Unlimited number of data rewrite cycles (but this does NOT mean that it is eternal).
- It may fail even with small shocks and vibrations when turned on;
- Makes noise during operation.
It looks like an SSD drive from the inside
- Faster than HDD by about 3 times;
- Completely silent;
- Resistant to moderate shock and vibration.
- High cost;
- A limited number of write cycles of information (in fact, modern operating systems, such as Windows 10, have long been able to carefully work with SSDs, without unnecessarily loading them, as a result of which the life of the SSD is approaching the life of the HDD).
SSD or HDD. which is better for a laptop
If your budget is limited, and you want to increase the speed of your laptop, then the best thing is when both SSD and HDD are installed in the laptop. An operating system is installed on the SSD, in which case your laptop starts to load and shut down much faster, programs also load faster, in general it feels as if the laptop has a second wind. there is lightness and speed after the old Hard Drive. Well, a hard disk is needed to store large amounts of information. a large collection of movies, music, photos, games, etc. After all, SSDs of large volumes are still very expensive. Therefore, the best solution would be to install a 120 or 256 GB SSD, as well as a 500 to 2000 GB hard drive (depending on your budget).
An SSD can be installed in a laptop in different ways (not all methods may be available on your laptop model):
- Instead of the current Hard disk. That is, we take out the hard drive and insert the SSD instead. This method is the least preferred, it is used only if it is impossible to install an SSD according to the second method. But on the other hand, this method is available for any laptops, even old ones (only if the hard drive is not with an IDE connector, but with a SATA one).
- Instead of a floppy drive. We buy a sled for a Hard drive or SSD, We take out the drive, Install the sled instead of the drive, and insert the SSD into the sled.
- You do not need to remove anything if a special connector for SSD is provided (soldered) on the laptop motherboard. mSATA or more modern M.2. This method is the most preferable since K. You will NOT have to remove anything from the laptop, and at the same time the mSATA or M.2 SSDs are very compact and light, a laptop with them will practically NOT add weight. When buying an M.2 SSD, be careful and find out in advance which SSD is right for you M.2 SATA or M.2 PCIe, they are NOT compatible with each other.
If you cannot install two drives inside your laptop at once, then you will have to choose from 3 options:
- Hard disk drive (HDD). is chosen by people whose budget is limited, and at the same time they need a large amount of memory (500-2000 GB or more), for example, to store a large collection of films, music, photos, videos, games.
- SSD. they choose someone for whom the speed of a laptop is more important than a large amount of memory (more often they buy models with 120-240 GB, since the for more capacious drives bite). In general, an SSD is certainly a more suitable type of memory for a laptop, since it is not afraid of shock and shock, and also works much faster. But it also costs more (if you compare SSD and HDD of the same size).
- A hybrid hard drive (SSHD) is a compromise technology for those who want both a large amount of memory and have their laptop run faster than the old Hard Drive. Still, hybrids are afraid of shock and slower than a full-fledged SSD.
Also worth mentioning is Intel Optane. a technology similar in principle to a hybrid hard drive. Only in this case, SSD and HDD are not a single device inside one case, but physically separate devices. The Intel Optane drive is paired with a normal hard drive (a separate M.2 PCIe slot must be soldered on the laptop motherboard for it). After some configuration, the operating system starts saving all the most frequently used files to a faster drive. Intel Optane. After that, the speed of work increases noticeably, but it still falls slightly short of the speed of normal SSDs.
How to choose a laptop hard drive
What is HDD in a laptop? HDD. Hard Disc Drive or hard drive that stores all your data. photos, movies, music, games, documents, etc. Also, the operating system in which you work is stored on the HDD. And if you see the inscription, for example, “HDD 500 GB”. this means that the laptop has an internal hard drive of 500 gigabytes, “HDD 1 TB”. for 1000 gigabytes.
A new hard drive for a laptop is usually chosen in 3 versions:
- The old disk is out of order;
- The memory capacity of the old HDD has become insufficient;
- Advice to increase the speed of the laptop (in this case, usually the old HDD is replaced with an SSD or a hybrid HDD, or, if there is such an opportunity, they leave the old HDD and install an SSD in addition to it).
At the moment, the slowest part of any computer, including a laptop, is the hard drive. It is he who in most cases slows down the work. Therefore, many new computers and laptops are equipped with a more modern form of permanent memory. solid state drive SSD.
This statement practically does not apply to 3D games, the brakes in games are most often due to a weak video card, less often due to a weak processor or lack of RAM.
How to view the hard drive on a laptop
To see the volume of the Hard Drive, you need to go to My Computer (in Windows 10. This computer). We are looking for either an icon with this name on the desktop and open it, or, if there is such an icon on the desktop, open the explorer, there should be a folder icon on the control panel (bottom left).
The folder icon is the explorer
In the explorer window that opens, on the left, click on “This computer” (in Windows 7. My Computer).
In the explorer window, select on the left. “This computer”
A window will open showing all connected storage devices: internal and external hard drives, SSD drives, USB sticks, memory cards, etc.
Displaying hard drives in explorer
From the example above, we see that in our case, 2 local drives (internal), one USB flash drive (a drive called ESD-USB) and one CD-ROM are connected to the laptop. Displaying two local drives does NOT mean that two Hard drives will necessarily be installed inside our laptop. There can be one hard disk, but programmatically it can be divided into several. two, three or more.
If our goal was to find out the total volume of all hard disks, then simply Summing up the volume of the local disks found, in this case it is 100 GB 465 GB = 565 GB.
If the goal was to find out the real number of physically installed disks in a laptop (usually one is installed from the factory in cheaper laptops, two are installed in more expensive ones. HDD and SSD, but there are exceptions), then right-click on any of the local disks, for example. on C, in the menu that appears, click “Properties”. In the window that opens, go to the “Equipment” tab.
Open the properties of any of the disks, then. the “Hardware” tab
On the “Equipment” tab, in this example, we see 3 devices. The first is an SSD disk (in the name in this case there is an abbreviation “SSD”, but it may be absent), the second is a hard disk (usually indicated by marking of Latin letters and numbers without an explicit abbreviation), the third is a USB flash drive (in the name there is an abbreviation “UFD”. USB Flash Drive or a flash drive for the USB port, the name also contains the abbreviation “USB”).
If we have nothing to say about the marking of the discs, we can simply enter this marking entirely into the search bar of the browser and search for information on the Internet.
Thus, we have established that inside the laptop from the example there is one hard drive and one SSD-drive. In general, as a rule, most laptops have only one space for 2.5-inch drives. The second disc is usually installed by users themselves instead of DVDs (for this you need to purchase the Corresponding mounts. a slide for 2.5 inch discs).
As for SSD-drives, they come not only in a 2.5-inch case, but also in smaller versions. So in our example. the SSD is a small board and is connected via the mSATA connector.
This is what an mSATA SSD looks like
It is installed in a connector on the laptop motherboard, an example of a connector and the allotted space for an SSD are highlighted in a red rectangle.
Inside view of the laptop
And this is how the SSD-drive already installed in the slot looks like.
SSD installed in mSATA connector
An inexperienced user can confuse such an SSD drive with a Wi-Fi module, but two wires (black and white) are suitable and connected to the Wi-Fi module, in this case we see that no wires are connected to the board. In addition, the Wi-Fi module is almost 2 times shorter (in the picture it is located directly above the SSD).
Well, in fact, the hard drive itself, Installed in its connector in the picture below.
Hard drive in laptop
It is also worth mentioning that not every laptop has an mSATA connector, therefore, before buying an SSD-drive of this format, be sure to find out about the presence of a corresponding connector inside your laptop. In general, mSATA is an obsolete connection connector, replaced by a more modern M.2 interface. When choosing an M.2 SSD, you need to be careful, they differ in both length and connection interface. SATA or PCIe.
What hard drives are in laptops
Laptops have smaller hard drives than desktop PCs, namely 2.5 “instead of 3.5”. As for the rest, apart from the physical size, the HDD data is not much different. A “laptop” hard drive can be easily installed in a desktop PC, and it will work fine there.

Which company to choose a hard drive for a laptop
- Western Digital (WD)
- Hitachi, etc.
There is a popular belief that hard drives from Seagate and Western Digital (WD) are of the highest quality, but these companies also have models that often break down. For example, many models of the Blue series (not the entire series) from the WD manufacturer often fail in the first years of operation, but the Black series is considered very reliable (but it also costs more).
We have tried to tell you as fully and easily as possible how to choose a hard drive for a laptop. We hope the article was clear and useful. If so, share the link to the article with your friends, let them know more too!
Read / write speed
When buying an SSD drive, pay attention to the read / write speed. Typically, manufacturers indicate sequential read / write speeds. This speed is faster than reading / writing random blocks. With sequential read / write data exchange is carried out in large blocks. With random read / write, the controller performs more operations per unit of time.
Read / write speed is a good metric for comparing the performance of different storage devices. It should be borne in mind that the manufacturer indicates the maximum speed and the real speed on your laptop will be slightly lower.
If you are planning to install an SSD in your laptop instead of an old HDD, you should keep in mind the thickness of the drive. The thickness of 2.5 inch discs can vary from 5 mm to 9.5 mm. Before buying it makes sense to measure the thickness of your old disc.
Sequential write / read speed: 450/550 MB / s
Random Write Speed (4KB Blocks): 40,000 IOPS
Interface: SATA 3
Dimensions: (WxHxD): 69.85 x 7 x 100mm
Patriot Memory PTL 120 G S25SSDR
Sequential write / read speed: 425/560 MB / s
Random Write Speed (4KB Blocks): 14000 IOPS
Buffer memory: 256 MB
Interface: SATA 3
TRIM support: yes
Controller: Phison PS3110-S10
Dimensions: (WxHxD): 69.85 x 7 x 100mm
Controller and firmware
The controller is responsible for managing the transfer of data between the drive and the computer. The total disk capacity also depends on the controller. SSD performance also depends on controller and firmware. Major companies that make SSD controllers include Intel, Sandforce, Indilinx (owned by Toshiba Corporation), Marvel, Silicon, Motion, Toshiba and Samsung.
Comparing the performance of different controllers is not easy. Obviously, the newer the controller, the better its performance. For example, the SF-2000 controller is faster than the SF-1000. However, it should be borne in mind that disks from different companies with the same controllers can vary greatly in performance. The point is that the performance of the disk also depends on the firmware (Firmware). The firmware is responsible for managing the data transfer. Obviously, the better the algorithms for transferring data between microcircuits, the higher the overall system performance.
Sandisk ultra ii
Sequential write / read speed: 500/550 MB / s
Random Write Speed (4KB Blocks): 83000 IOPS
Interface: SATA 3
Crucial MX300 SSD 1050 GB
530 MB / s sequential read speed
Random Write Speed (4KB Blocks): 83000 IOPS
TRIM support: yes
Interface: SATA 3
Which SSD is the best for a laptop
Below is a list of the most popular SSD drives with key characteristics.
SSD solid state drives are gaining more and more popularity, especially in ultra-thin laptops. In an SSD, information is stored not in magnetic plates, but in memory chips, like on an external USB flash drive.
SSD drives are characterized by higher data transfer speed and lower power consumption. SSDs are more reliable than HDDs as they do not have rotating platters and moving magnetic heads.
Among the disadvantages of SSD drives are the high cost and small amount of data storage.
Usually, an SSD drive with a volume of 16 to 512 gigabytes is installed in a laptop. SSD drives larger than 512 gigabytes are significantly more expensive. If this is the only disk in your laptop, then it should be at least 120 gigabytes in size. For more comfortable work, we recommend drives with a capacity of 240 gigabytes or more.
How to choose a laptop hard drive
In notebooks Traditional mechanical hard drives are being replaced by more reliable solid state drives. This is due to the fact that laptops are getting thinner and there is very limited space for placing a hard drive. In this article, we will take a look at the different types of drives that can be installed in a laptop and tell you what characteristics to look out for when buying.
For Windows users
Through “My Computer”. This method is suitable for Windows. This is the easiest way and does not require any third-party programs or removing the hard drive itself. It is enough to perform the following actions:
- Right-click on the “My Computer” shortcut;
- Click on “Manage”;
- Go to the tab “storage devices”. “Disk management”;
- Also in the “Device Manager” tab, select “Disk devices”, there you will see the disk model.
The procedure may differ slightly depending on the version of Windows. Anyway in the device manager under “Disk devices” you will see all SSD and HDD models that your operating system sees. If you know for sure that you have a hard drive and valuable data on it, but the computer does not see it, this is a reason to contact the specialists.
How to find out everything in a hard drive
Let’s look at several ways to find out information about your hard drive.
Remove the hard drive from the case
In classic stationary desktops, the easiest way is to open the case and see what kind of disks you have installed. On laptops, depending on the model, only a screwdriver may be enough to get to the disk, and sometimes you need to disassemble the entire laptop case.
External drives are just a box and a hard drive inside. Therefore, despite the fact that there are only four hard drive manufacturers now, there are many more companies producing external drives. For example, an external drive can be from Transcend, but inside there will be a Samsung drive.
In total, if you managed to get the disk, then on the hard disk itself, detailed information is always written, such as volume, model, manufacturer, etc.
Types of discs
At the moment, there are three main types of disk drives: HDD, SDD and external hard drives.
- HDD drives are common in almost every shop-assembled computer, they cannot be confused with anything.
- SDD drives are a modern and good alternative to HDDs as they have no mechanics. Silent, fast and therefore expensive.
- External hard drives are also common, do not need to be housed inside a case, and can be easily connected to a computer.
How to find out what hard drives are in the computer
Ordinary PC users do not need to know the components, the main thing is that everything works. If problems started with the computer, data disappeared or there was not enough space, then the question of what hard drive is in the computer becomes relevant. If this is your case or you just want to know how good your computer is, in this article we will look at how to find out the model of a hard drive in a computer or laptop.
For Linux users
Through hdparm. This method is suitable for Linux OS. This program is automatically installed in every modern version of Linux.
To access, open a terminal and run hdparm in the console with the.i / dev / hda parameter. You will see the main parameters of your hard drive
All programs for checking and diagnosing a hard drive will show which device you have installed. This function is also available in all applications for testing and analyzing computer configuration. For example, in EVERSET it is enough to select the “Data storage” tab and you will see every characteristic of your hard drive.
DO NOT be surprised if you see the total volume less than stated, it is always lower than stated due to the characteristics of the manufacturers. The difference is always equal
7%, so for a disc with a declared volume of 500 GB we will get 465 GB of free space. If every gigabyte is important to you. always choose with a large volume.
How to find out which hard drive is worth. method 2
This time we will use another system utility called “Device Manager”. This method allows you to quickly see the model of the hard disk, and after a couple of mouse clicks, find out the volume of the hard disk and its partitions. In this case, the size is indicated in megabytes.
Press the WinPause key combination and on the left side of the window that opens, select “Device Manager”.
Then go to the section (expand it with a double click of the mouse) “Disk devices”. You will see the hard drives connected to your computer (internal and external). Their names consist of named models.
Now click on You need a hard drive by double-clicking on it, or right-click on it and select “Properties”.
In the window that opens, go to the “Volumes” tab and click the “Fill” button. After a few seconds, information about the size of the hard disk and its partitions will appear.
How to find out the model and size of a hard drive
To begin with, we will use the already familiar utility “System information”. The advantages of this method are that we get Not only the model and size of the hard drive, but we can see other useful information about the disk itself and its partitions / local disks.
To open the utility we need, Use the WinR hotkeys and in the appeared field “Open” enter “msinfo32”.
You will see a window “System information”, on the left side select “Components / Storage / Disks”. First point “Discs” shows information about local drives. The second is in your physical hard drives, including external.
If you have several hard drives, they will also be Presented in this table.
How to find out your hard drive in Windows 10
Top ten You can get information about the model and size of the disk using the “Task Manager”.
Go to the “Performance” tab and select the desired drive.
How to find out what hard drive is on the computer
The third day and another article on the definition of computer hardware. We have already learned how to identify the motherboard and processor, and today we will talk about how to find out which hard drive is on the computer.
In fact, everything is simple, and, in fact, we will use the topics with the same methods as in previous articles.
The above methods are enough to get the information we need. But according to the established tradition, we will NOT do without mentioning third-party programs that help to find out the model and size of the hard drive, as well as analyze and check the condition of the hard drive.
- Speccy (no analysis)
- Diskcheckup and others.
Also, you can see the size of the hard drive and its partitions in the window “Computer management”.
As before, everything is quite easy, and as you can see, most of the methods for determining device parameters are repeated. Remembering them, because of this, is also easier.
There are few cases when you need to find out the model of your hard drive. Most often, a similar question is asked when the Winchester ordered to live long. Errors appear during operation, or the OS does NOT boot at all due to a non-working disk. It happens that you need to determine your HDD in order to replace it with more capacious ones, or this information is just interesting for you.
In any case, problems with a hard drive are those that are eliminated in workshops, since repairing computers at home is advisable only when the problem can be eliminated quickly and efficiently. Diagnosing HDD malfunctions It takes a long time, which means that you can quickly only replace the problem disk with a new one.
The most primitive way to find out your hard drive. Get it out of the system unit or laptop case. To do this, turn off the power (Removing the laptop battery), unscrew the system unit (or the bottom cover on the bottom of the laptop) and We take out our HDD, on which all the information of interest will be visible. Manufacturer, volume, speed of work, country of production and other parameters.
If you disassemble a laptop or untwist the system unit you have comments, then we can find out all the information of interest using the program method.
How to find out the real volume of the hard drive
For a better understanding, manufacturers and sellers indicate the traditional disk sizes: 40, 60, 120, 160, 320, 500, 640 GB, and so on. However, in reality, it is always less than stated, because:
1 GB = 1024 MB
1 MB = 1024 KB
1 KB = 1024 bytes
And manufacturers round up to 1000 when calculating. Below is a table of correspondence between the marking volume of the HDD and the real.
|40 GB||40,000,000,000||37.25 GB|
|60 GB||60,000,000,000||55.88 GB|
|80 GB||80,000,000,000||74.51 GB|
|100 GB||100,000,000,000||93.13 GB|
|120 GB||120,000,000,000||111.76 GB|
|160 GB||160,000,000,000||149.01 GB|
|200 GB||200,000,000,000||186.26 GB|
|250 GB||250,000,000,000||232.83 GB|
|320 GB||320,000,000,000||298.02 GB|

|640 GB||640,000,000,000||595.84 GB|
To verify this, Right-click on the My Computer shortcut and select Manage. In the utility that opens, go to the storage devices tab. Disk management
In our case, the utility shows 465.65 GB, which corresponds to the 500 GB marking.
How to find out the hard drive model
As in the previous method, Right-click on the My Computer shortcut and select Manage. In the opened computer management utility, open the Device Manager tab. Here expand the Disk devices item and you will see the hard drives installed on your computer.
In our case, there are two of them. Hitachi HTS545050A7E380 and SanDisk SSD i100 24 GB. First. Traditional HDD, second. Solid State SSD.
How to find out all the information about your hard drive
We already turned to the AIDA64 program for help when we were looking for our network card, the temperature of the processor and video card, battery wear, etc. This utility will help us this time too.
You can familiarize yourself with the AIDA64 program and download it for free on this page of our website.
Launch Aida on your computer and go to the Data Storage tabs. ATA. At the top of the window, select the required hard drive, if there are several of them, and the program will show all information about the hard drive. The report is split into parts, the information we need is titled ATA Device Properties and Device Physical Data.
As you can see, everything is elementary and absolutely simple, if you know what tools to use to find information.
Using monitoring utilities
Physical examination of a hard drive has two major drawbacks:
- You have to disassemble the laptop just to find out which drive is installed and see its model.
- The disc body may not have the information you need.
To remedy these shortcomings, use the programmatic method to view hard disk information. It consists in using Windows tools or Special utilities to monitor your computer. For example, to find out the volume of the hard drive, just go to “My Computer” and add together the volumes of partitions C and D. You can also find out the full volume using the Disk Management utility.
- Right click on the “Computer” shortcut. Launch the Manage tool.
- Go to the Disk Management tab. Find the connected drives and see their size.
If you want to know the exact model of the drive, then in the same “Management” window, go to the “Device Manager” tab. Open the “Disk drives” section and you will see the names of the connected media.
If you want to know all the technical parameters of the disk, down to the number of heads, file system and firmware version, then Use the utilities for computer monitoring. Speccy or AIDA64.
In Speccy (freeware), the information you need is located in the Data Storage tab. Among other things, it shows the current disk temperature and its general condition.
A comparable amount of data on disk can be found in the Data Storage section of the AIDA64 program. By selecting a subsection with the name of the interface, which is used to connect the media, you will receive a complete disk specification.
If the hard drive is out of order and you want to remove it, or you are simply not afraid to disassemble the laptop, then you can find out the type of media as a result of a physical examination. But first you need to get to the disk:
- Unplug the laptop from the electrical outlet, turn it upside down on a flat surface. Remove the battery.
- Unscrew the cover that covers the bottom of the laptop. Some models have separate small covers, under which there are compartments with RAM or hard drive. If you are lucky, and you have just such a laptop, then it will be enough to remove this small cover.
The hard disk is fixed inside the laptop with a special sled. Unscrew them and carefully remove the device from the case. Now you can find out the model, volume, speed and other important parameters.
Determining the hard drive model on a laptop
A laptop can have both a hard disk drive (HDD) and a solid state drive (SSD). These are two devices with a fundamentally different approach to storing information, so if, for example, you decide to upgrade your laptop, then you need to find out what type of disk is being used at the moment. For convenience, we will call both types of media simply disks.
What are the disks?
When you find information about the disc, you will have to interpret it somehow, because for an unprepared person all these meanings and terms have no meaning. Therefore, let’s first figure out what types of drives for laptops there are:
- SSD (Solid State Drive) is a new type of media that works on the basis of memory chips, which makes it look like a regular USB flash drive. Does not make noise, does not heat up, does not vibrate, consumes little power, demonstrates high read and write speed.
- HDD (hard disk, hard disk) is an obsolete type of media that uses an electronic-mechanical principle of operation. Equipped with a head that reads data from magnetic disks, so the read and write speed is significantly lower than that of an SSD.
HDD makes noise, heats up, vibrates and uses more power than SSD. The only advantage is the low price compared to the solid state drive. But SSD is gradually replacing HDD from the market, so soon no one will remember in hard drives.
In addition to the types and volume of disks, you need to know a few more fundamental information. For example, the operating mode:
- SATA 150. practically not used in modern laptops, the bandwidth does NOT exceed 1.5 Gb / s.
- SATA 300. 300 Gb / s bandwidth mode.
- SATA 600. 600 Gb / s Bandwidth Mode.
It is preferable to buy drives that support SATA III (SATA 600) mode. The difference in performance between SATA II and SATA III can reach 1.5-2 times, this is noticeable to the naked eye when booting the system and performing other tasks.
But if the laptop motherboard only supports the SATA II interface, then it makes no sense to put an SSD with SATA III, because there will still NOT be more than 300 Gb / s. It is important NOT to forget about hardware compatibility, otherwise you can waste money on a device whose functionality will be limited.
