Use your phone as a graphics tablet for your computer

Among other interesting options for using an Android phone or tablet, one can single out the use of a mobile device as a graphics tablet for drawing on a computer, this will be discussed in this material. See also: Unusual Ways to Use Android.

Most interesting of all, this feature looks for Samsung Galaxy Note phones and other devices with support for a pressure-sensitive pen. But, if you wish, you can use such features on other Android devices: the only thing is that drawing accuracy on a regular touch screen will not be very good.

A pen-free Android graphics tablet

If your Android device does not support pen input, you can still use it to draw on your computer, but with your finger. Unfortunately, in this case, the accuracy will be insufficient, and the pen may “jump”, which is due to the way the capacitive touch screens work.

This can be done using the VirtualTablet application already described above, but you will need to go to the application settings on the phone and set “Finger Touch / Capacitive stylus” in the “Input Mode” item.

I recommend using this particular application, but there are other similar utilities in the Play Store:

  • Graphics Tablet. supports the same capabilities as VirtualTablet (pen and finger input, pressure) and also requires a driver to be installed on the computer. Connection only via Wi-Fi. But I couldn’t find the driver, and there is no information about it on the official page.
  • WI-FI Drawing Tablet. no pen or pressure support, a kind of mouse emulator using your phone or tablet. The link to the server application for the computer is in the description of the application in the Play Store.
  • Tablet Stylus. paid, not tested, but the video on the official page is very similar to the previous version, except that the USB connection is supported. A link to the server application is at the end of the application description in the Play Store.

Galaxy Note 9, Note 8 and other devices with S Pen as a graphics tablet

The most interesting in the context of this topic are the Galaxy Note smartphones and Samsung tablets that support the pressure-sensitive S-Pen and are equipped with a Wacom digitizer. We can take advantage of all these advantages and turn a mobile device into an almost full-fledged graphic tablet:

  • Download the VirtualTablet Lite (S-Pen) app on your phone or tablet, available for free on the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?ID=com.sunnysidesoft.VirtualTablet.lite (there is also a paid version without ads).
  • Download and install the VirtualTablet Server program on your computer, available at http://www.sunnysidesoft.com/virtualtablet/download/
  • Start VirtualTablet Server on the computer after installation. If you plan to connect via Bluetooth, then when prompted by the program, allow the search, in my example I connect via Wi-Fi (the computer and smartphone must be connected to the same network). Wait until the Status field in the program reads Ready. Please note that it must not be blocked by a firewall.
  • After starting the server, launch the VirtualTablet application on your phone or tablet, and then select the connection type: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or USB (for the last point, you will need to enable USB debugging on Android).
  • When using a Wi-Fi connection, if both devices are connected to the same network, you will see a list of servers in the application (or you can manually enter the IP address). Select the required server and click the “Connect” button in the application.

Done, the virtual graphics tablet on your mobile device is up and running and can be used in graphics programs.

For example, paint in Photoshop, using all the additional functions of brushes, and if your computer is running Windows 10, the functions of Windows Ink Workspace will become available (the icon usually appears automatically in the notification area), you can also conveniently use the free Microsoft Fresh Paint application (available in Windows 10 Store).

If necessary, you can change the pressure and travel sensitivity of the pen in the VirtualTablet Server software on your computer. Also note the following point: if your computer has more than one monitor, the graphics tablet will only work for the monitor number 1 in Windows.

Any self-respecting digital artist these days is simply obliged to have a graphic tablet that works in tandem with a graphic editor on a personal computer. But many, especially novice artists, cannot afford to buy this rather expensive device.

However, this problem can be solved. If you have an Android tablet and are using the renowned GIMP image editor, thanks to the new XorgTablet application, you can use your device as a graphics tablet.

This app, complete with drivers developed by the gimpusers.com team, will allow you to select your Android tablet as an input device in the GIMP editor.

Sounds interesting and pretty tempting. However, keep in mind that not all tablet PCs, unlike real graphics tablets, are able to recognize the pressure on the screen, which significantly limits the possibilities of such a solution.

The ideal option would be to use tablets that have a built-in active digitizer that works in tandem with an active pressure-sensitive digital pen.

Such devices include, for example, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, whose screen is equipped with a Wacom digitizer and which comes with an S Pen.

Other tablets will also be able to work with the application, but they will be far from professional level.

The application allows you to connect your tablet to your computer both via a USB cable and using WI-FI. However, it has one drawback: if an Android tablet is selected as an input device, the editor stops responding to the mouse, which is not very convenient.

In addition, the drivers for connecting the tablet are only available for the Linux operating system.

Response speed

This indicator for professional tablets is 200 points per second. At a lower speed, there is a delay in the display of actions on the screen. For ordinary users, 100. 150 points per second is quite enough.

Programmable Buttons

The convenience of working with a graphics tablet largely depends on them.

When using complex software packages, it is desirable to have the maximum number of programmable buttons.

If the drawing is processed on a computer using a keyboard or mouse, 5-6 buttons are enough.

The best graphic tablet manufacturers. which company to choose

Several companies are engaged in the release of graphic tablets.

The most popular manufacturers both among amateurs and professional users:

  • Wacom;
  • Huion;
  • Genius;
  • Ugee;
  • Hitachi;
  • Trust.

The products of the listed brands are of excellent quality and a high degree of reliability. The model of a particular brand should be chosen depending on the tasks that will have to be solved with its help.

Working surface size

A tablet with a minimum screen size is convenient in that it takes up little space, great for use with an amateur purpose.

In highly specialized areas where you have to work with drawings, devices of the A3 or A4 size are preferred, which are more suitable for creating a high-quality picture. This format allows for accurate rendering of the smallest details.

Meets the needs of many users and a tablet with A5 screen size. The price is less, but with its help very good drawings and drawings are obtained.

Digital notepad or mini tablet

Outwardly it looks like a folder for documents. A very simple gadget, used mainly for short transcripts, notes. Designed for those who, by the nature of their work, have to write a lot so as not to engage in subsequent digitization, which takes a lot of time.

  • Convenience of storing recorded information (lectures, notes).
  • Ability to make drawings, simple drawings and diagrams.
  • The information you need can be printed at any time.
  • Affordable price.
  • Positioning accuracy is not high enough to perform graphic work at a professional level.
  • In high resolution, slow line drawing speed.

Input method

The following input methods are distinguished:

Touch (more fine-tuned scaling and more room for creativity).

Aspect ratio

An important point when choosing a device is the equal aspect ratio of the tablet and computer monitor. This will avoid possible distortion. For a widescreen display, you need an appropriate type of tablet. Suitable ratio is 4: 3 and 16: 9.

The size of the work area can be easily adjusted, so the difference in proportions is not a big problem.

Working on a graphics tablet is highly dependent on the characteristics of the pen. An excellent result can be obtained only if the device is comfortable to use. The pen can be equipped with additional buttons, it can have a rubber coating. In any case, the convenience of its use comes first.

The following parameters are of great importance:

Hardness. softness. A stiff nib can create a scratching effect. Soft can wear off quickly. Spare tips are welcomed.

Pressure sensitivity. It is indicated by numbers. For novice users, a low level sensitivity is fine. The higher this indicator, the more realistic the drawing process is. With a weak pressure, a translucent line remains, with a stronger one it turns out thicker and brighter. The industry standard is 2048 levels of sensitivity. Almost all modern styluses have exactly this indicator.

Pen tilt sensitivity. This parameter is measured in degrees. The thickness of the line during drawing depends on the angle of inclination of the pen. Thanks to this, the artist can make strokes of the desired thickness without using buttons on the tablet or in a computer program.

Connection method and software

There is a USB or Bluetooth connection. The first option is preferable, if only because it does not require recharging. Besides, the difference in the price of tablets of this type is also noticeable. When the tablet is intended for amateur use, the power from the cable connected to the computer will be sufficient.

phone, graphics, tablet, computer

A professional device needs a power source. They are presented as follows:

Wired models are much cheaper, but working with them, for example, on the road, is not very convenient.

Any graphics tablet requires drivers to be installed. Their purpose is to control the angle of inclination, sensitivity and other aspects. Before using the gadget, you need to make sure that all drivers are working correctly.

The operating system is installed depending on the device modification. This is usually Microsoft Windows or Mac OS.

How to use a tablet screen as a monitor

Almost any IT-shnik, and, in principle, some ordinary tablet owners dream of using it to their advantage. connecting it to the system unit so that information is displayed on the tablet like on a regular monitor. The first thing that comes to mind is to connect the tablet to the video card using an HDMI. miniHDMI cable, provided that the tablet and graphics card have these connectors.

After all, using an HDMI cable, a digital signal with multimedia data. video, sound, etc. should be transmitted. But the problem is that in a tablet, the HDMI connector is an output, not an input. Those. it can transmit an image to another device (for example, a monitor or TV), but not receive.

For a very long time I was looking for a way to make a monitor replacement from a tablet, and believe me, at least as of 2014, technically (at the hardware level) it will not be possible to implement this, unless someone tries to solder the HDMI input to the tablet, which receives a signal from a video card, or tablet manufacturers themselves think of it, and start making tablets with universal HDMI, capable of both receiving and transmitting a signal.

However, you should not be upset, because there is good news. You can make the main monitor out of the tablet at the software level. A special program will help the computer recognize the tablet as a monitor. There are three options for how you can use such a “tablet monitor”:

    • Complete replacement for a standard monitor. Can be used in case of emergency, for example, if a normal monitor is broken.
    • The tablet can easily turn into an additional monitor to the main monitor. Everything that happens on the monitor can be duplicated on the tablet display.
    • The tablet screen can become a “continuation” of the main monitor, ie. for example, on a large screen you can watch a movie, and on a tablet screen you can read correspondence, control any computer program with a mouse and keyboard, read mail, and in general, do absolutely everything that you usually do on a PC.

    Installation

We need a USB cable to connect the tablet to a PC (or you can connect via Wi-Fi), install the program on the computer, and on the tablet.

    • Install iDisplay on your computer. you can download it for your version of the operating system from the official website for free. Be sure to restart the PC, otherwise the connection will not work.
    • Install the application on a tablet from Google Play. It is paid, and costs 5 bucks (but if you really want to try the application for free, use w3bsit3-dns.com.
    • Launch iDisplay on your computer.
    • We launch the iDisplay application on the tablet. Click on the plus sign to add a “server”, i.e. your PC data (for Wi-Fi connection). For a USB connection, connect the USB cable to your PC and tablet, and click the “USB Connection” button.
    • We are asked to enter IP, port, and name. The IP address and port number can be viewed in the tray by hovering the mouse over the iDisplay. We transfer the data to the tablet. Enter anything for the name.
    • When everything is ready, click “Add and Connect”.

Using Smartphone to Draw with Virtual Tablet For PC

    • Further, if the IP and port are entered correctly, an “iDisplay autorization” window will appear on the computer screen asking if you want to reject the tablet connection, connect once, or automatically connect every time you receive a request from the tablet. I recommend clicking “Always allow”, so this question will no longer pop up, and the connection will be automatic.
    • The monitor will go out for a couple of seconds, blink a little, and calm down. Then the desktop of the computer OS will appear on the tablet.

    Customization

This completes the installation, but we need to choose whether the tablet will be the main, backup or additional monitor. To do this, in Windows, go to the display resolution settings (to open the menu. right-click on the desktop).

In front of the words “Multiple Screens”, click on the small triangle. If “Duplicate Screens” is selected, the tablet will repeat the entire contents of the main monitor, almost like a parrot. The Expand Screens option will enable different information to be displayed on two monitors. They will use the same desktop, but they can work independently, complementing each other.

Now comes the fun part. If you would like the tablet to act as the primary monitor, select “Show desktop only 2”, and then click Apply. Then you should open the tray, right-click on the iDisplay icon, select “Settings”, and click on “launch at Windows startup” so that a checkmark appears there.

Now, when you restart the PC and disconnect the normal monitor, when the system boots, the program will automatically start, and you just need to connect to this program through the tablet, and your OS desktop will appear on the screen of your tablet.

In order not to be unfounded, I conducted an experiment, whether the tablet will work as a monitor when I turn off a normal monitor, and recorded the result on video. I went into a text editor, opened a browser, watched the video via YouTube, and went to the Androidtab.ru website, where you are reading this article. I connected to the tablet via Wi-Fi, plus a program for capturing video from the screen was turned on, so it is possible that slight delays in the video will be visible. If you connect via USB, the connection will be more stable and the picture will be faster. Apologies in advance for the video quality (max 480p).

This monitor has a couple of disadvantages. First, to use the tablet screen as a monitor, you must first install the program, and for this you need to see what you are doing. Those. if the monitor breaks down, you need to connect another, working one to the PC, install and configure the program, and only then disconnect the monitor and use the tablet screen instead. The second drawback is that when you start the system, you need to manually start the connection with the PC on the tablet each time. And third, the most important thing is that you need a tablet with a good resolution and a fairly large display. The tablet in the video is a 7-inch, the cheapest Chinese device on the planet with cracked glass. There is very little comfort from using such a “monitor”, but a 9-10 “tablet is much better suited for such purposes.

Advantages: the possibility of touch input from the tablet remains; with a “monitor”, you can lie on the sofa, or go to the kitchen, if the Wi-Fi signal is enough, and use your computer.

    Installing the tablet driver.

Do not rush to immediately connect the tablet to your computer after purchase! First, you need to install the driver so that the tablet works correctly and all its settings become available.

The driver for any tablet can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website in the Support section.

Download the driver specifically for your tablet model.

Virtual Tablet turns your Android into a drawing tablet | Does it work?

After installing the driver, it is recommended to restart the computer and only then connect the tablet to it.

    Customizing your tablet pen.

The most important thing here is to make sure the tablet is in pen mode, not mouse mode. Otherwise, you will not be able to take advantage of the main advantage. the sensitivity to the pressure of the pen on the working surface.

Go to the Pen tab and check the tablet mode.

You also need to adjust the pen sensitivity. For example, to work with wider brush strokes in Photoshop, move the Pen Sensitivity slider closer to Soft. Conversely, to work with thin strokes and lines, move the slider closer to the Hard position.

Click the Display button to the right of the Pen Mode setting. Here you need to enable proportional scaling and uncheck the Use Windows handwriting option

As you can see, setting up a graphics tablet to draw is not that difficult. However, this will take a certain amount of time: installing software for work, setting up the pen of a graphics tablet and the device itself, selecting suitable brushes. all this does not happen instantly. But believe me, it’s worth it: working with graphics on a gadget becomes many times more comfortable after carefully adjusting all the parameters for yourself.

In the previous article, we looked at how to use a tablet to significantly improve the efficiency of retouching.

Today we will talk about the first steps after buying a tablet, what you need to do for comfortable work.

I will illustrate the material using the example of setting up my old Wacom Bamboo tablet.

Setting up the graphics tablet itself

After installing and updating the software, you need to correctly configure the graphics tablet for its correct operation. We will select the sensitivity of the pen in SAI or PS to the pressure on the pen that suits you. Launch a suitable program and open the tablet control panel (in our case, this is “Wacom Tablet”). Create a new picture and use the most common brush with a large size as a tool (a diameter of about 50 in Photoshop is fine). Draw a couple of lines using the pen and clicking on it with different strengths. Continue drawing lines while adjusting the Sensitivity setting in the Wacom Tablet settings until you are comfortable with adjusting the thickness of the brush by pressing the pen. On some more expensive models, it is possible to save similar settings for several programs separately (for example, one setting for SAI, and another for Photoshop). This is sometimes extremely useful when working with a graphics tablet.

    Choosing and setting up brushes

Let’s now set up the brushes that you will be using in Photoshop. Press F5 or click on the Brushes button with the mouse, select Brush Tip Shape.

    • Let’s start with the shape of the brush. We make an extended or inclined brush by changing the values of the Angle and Roundness parameters or simply visually adjusting the shape of the brush in the picture on the right.
    • The second item we will tweak is Spacing. It affects the smoothness of the brush. All the changes made are displayed in the figure below.
    • The third item is Shape Dynamics. Here you can adjust the following parameters: Pen Pressure (force of pressing the pen), Pen Tilt (angle of inclination of the tool), Stylus Wheel (setting the wheel on some pens), Rotation (angle of rotation). It is very convenient to change the size of the brush simply by applying different pressure to the nib, especially if you frequently need to change the diameter of the tool you are using. It is worth noting that the Pen Tilt parameter is mainly supported only on expensive models. With the wheel, you can quickly adjust the size and rotation of the tool used.
    • And finally, the fourth point is Other Dynamics. Here you can adjust the dependence of the transparency of the brush on the pressure on the pen.

I also recommend trying the Erodious brushes, which are similar in principle to bristled brushes: when painting, their size, shape and texture change.

    Disable touch input.

Go to the Touch Options tab and uncheck the Enable touch option.

This must be done, otherwise in the process of retouching in Photoshop the tablet will react not only to the pen, but also to the movements of the hand on the surface of the tablet, moreover, in an unpredictable way. By disabling touch input, you will get rid of this problem.

Now you can get to work. Launch Photoshop, open a photo for retouching, grab a tablet pen and try using it instead of a mouse in the retouching process. If you don’t have your own sources for retouching, you can try your hand at this photo.

You can attach the results of retouching in the comments, having previously reduced the size to 2000 pixels. on the long side, or post it on the forum.

And as an example, I suggest looking at the result of retouching a photo with creative makeup. Here, the models applied a special make-up to give the skin a golden hue and accentuate the highlights on the skin. Click to enlarge the picture.

I wish you all creative inspiration and enjoyable work with your graphics tablet.!

    Configuring additional keys

Some tablets have additional physical keys. They are called ExpressKeys on Wacom tablets. They are located on the sides of the work area and, as their name suggests, they are designed to more conveniently and quickly control the program in which you are working. Each key can be assigned its own key. The default keys are usually the most popular, but you can customize everything if you want. Note that initially both keyblocks repeat their functions. Therefore, in the device settings, it is possible to change the preset values of the shortcut keys. Here you can edit the values of each key separately, and in some tablets you can also save different settings for different programs (different, for example, for sai and photoshop).
