Installing touchpad drivers
Touchpad drivers, or rather their absence, is the most common reason why it doesn’t work. Installing them manually is the first thing to try. At the same time, even if the driver is installed (for example, Synaptics, with which this happens more often than others), try this option anyway, since very often it turns out that new drivers installed by Windows 10 itself, unlike the “old” official ones, and not work.
In order to download the necessary drivers, go to the official website of your laptop manufacturer in the “Support” section and find there driver downloads for your laptop model. It is even easier to enter the phrase brand_and_model_laptop support in the search engine. and go to the first result.
There is a good chance that there will be any touchpad drivers (Pointing Device) for Windows 10, in this case they can safely download the available drivers for Windows 8 or 7.
Install the downloaded driver (if drivers for previous OS versions were loaded and they refuse to install, use compatibility mode) and check if the touchpad has been restored to work.
Note: It has been noticed that after manually installing the official Synaptics, Alps, Elan drivers, Windows 10 may automatically update them, which sometimes leads to the touchpad not working again. In such a situation, after installing old but working touchpad drivers, preventing them from being automatically updated using the Official Microsoft utility, see How to prevent automatic updating of Windows 10 drivers.
In some cases, the touchpad may NOT work in the absence of the necessary laptop chipset drivers, such as Intel management Engine Interface, ACPI, ATK, possibly SEPARATE USB drivers and additional specific drivers (which are often needed on laptops).
For example, for ASUS laptops, in addition to installing Asus Smart Gesture, you must have ATK Package. Manually download similar drivers from the official website of the laptop manufacturer and install them.
Also check in Device Manager (right click on Start. Device Manager) if there are any unknown, non-working or disabled devices, especially in the sections “HID Devices”, “Mice and other pointing devices”, “Other devices”. For disabled. you can name it with the right mouse button and select “Enable”. If there are unknown and non-working devices, try to find out what the device is and download a driver for it (see How to install an unknown device driver).
Touchpad not working in Windows 10
If after installing Windows 10 or updating the touchpad on your laptop does not work, this guide contains several ways to fix the problem and other useful information that can help prevent the problem from reoccurring.
In most cases, the problem with a non-functioning touchpad is caused by a lack of drivers or the presence of “wrong” drivers, which Windows 10 itself can install. However, this is not the only possible option. See Also: How To Disable Touchpad On Laptop.
Note: before proceeding, pay attention to the presence of keys on the laptop keyboard to enable / disable the touchpad (it should have a very understandable image, see screenshot with examples). Try pressing this key, or it in combination with the Fn key. perhaps this simple action will fix the problem.
Also try to go to the control panel. mouse. And see if there are options for turning on and off the laptop touchpad. Perhaps for some reason it was disabled in the settings, this is found on the Elan and Synaptics touchpad. Another location with the touchpad settings: Start. Settings. Devices. Mouse and touchpad (if there are no items in this section for controlling the touchpad, then either it is disabled or no drivers are installed for it).
ways to enable the touchpad
If the steps above did not help, here are some more options that may work if the laptop touchpad is not working in Windows 10.
At the beginning of the instructions, the function keys of the laptop were mentioned, which allow you to enable / disable the touchpad. If these keys do not work (and not only for the touchpad, but also for other tasks. for example, DO NOT switch the state of the Wi-Fi adapter), we can assume that the necessary software from the manufacturer is not installed for them, which in turn may cause inability to turn on the touchpad. information about what this software is. at the end of the instruction The brightness control of the Windows 10 screen does not work.
Another possible option is that the touchpad was disabled in the BIOS (UEFI) of the laptop (the option is usually located somewhere in the Peripherals or Advanced section, has the word Touchpad or Pointing Device in the name). Just in case, check. How to enter BIOS and UEFI Windows 10.
Note: if the touchpad does not work on a Macbook in Boot Camp, install the drivers that, when creating a bootable USB flash drive with Windows 10 in a disk junk, are loaded onto this USB drive in the Boot Camp folder.
Check if the touchpad is enabled
In this article, we will in detail, Analyzing the nuances of the problem and its solutions, tell you why the touchpad does not work on a laptop Lenovo, Acer, Asus, HP or a second manufacturer. This device, indisputably useful, may refuse to respond to your touches at the most inopportune moment; sometimes the matter is NOT limited to the sensor and even the associated keys fail.
Let’s start solving the problem with the most obvious, but at the same time often neglected conclusion: the touchpad does not work precisely because you (or another user who has access to the laptop) turned it off. In this case, the way out of the situation is obvious: you need to turn the touchpad back on. How to do this, we will tell you in the following subheadings of the article.
Test the touchpad in Windows
Removing the touchpad driver
The easiest way to resolve the issue once and for all is to completely erase the utility and then install it. This can be done, in particular, through the second service built into the operating system. “Device Manager”. Shown here is all the hardware that has ever interacted with the motherboard. and in particular, your touchpad.,
Please note: setting up a touchpad on a laptop in Windows 10, which will be described below, is feasible only if you have administrator rights. or access to the corresponding account.
In addition, you need to remember: as soon as the driver is removed, the Problem device will be automatically deactivated. This applies to both the touchpad and all other equipment, from a network card to a graphics adapter. However, there is nothing wrong with that: after deleting, you can restore the utility program to its original, efficient, state.
Procedure for erasing the driver:
- Call Device Manager in any way you see fit. For example, you can tap on the “Start” icon with the right mouse button, then select the desired item in the list.
- Find and remove the driver that is interfering with the normal functioning of the touchpad. To do this, expand the Corresponding list (“Mice and others.”) and, calling up the context window for the device, select the “Properties” option. Here you will find the button responsible for removing the utility. An example for a video card is shown below. if the touchpad on a laptop is buggy, you will need to click on the same button.
- After it is pressed, it remains to confirm the action. Now restart your laptop. the touchpad issue should be fixed.
Now let’s consider the second option, which implies the use of the system menu “Options”. You will need to perform the following manipulations:
- Open the above menu. To do this, you can open the Start menu and select the gear icon in the left column. Another method is to use the WindowsI keyboard shortcut.
- In the new window that opens, you will need to select the “Applications” item. Next. staying on the top tab in the left pane, find the driver of the problem device and uninstall it.
- It may be necessary to remove a whole package of device-specific drivers to normalize the touchpad. Read the names of applications and manufacturers. and uninstall everything that may be related to the described problem.
The third way, in which it is simply impossible not to mention, is the use of the “Control Panel”. This technique is fine if you can’t see the touchpad on a laptop in Windows 10 or older operating systems. Follow the instructions:
- Use the WindowsR keyboard shortcut to set and apply the query
- In the window that opens, follow the link that allows you to remove installed programs.
- In the list provided, Using the sorting option convenient for you, find the touchpad driver, and then uninstall it in the standard way. After all the steps taken, do not forget to restart the laptop.
Having trouble finding a utility? Try using one of the Special Applications to make it easier to find, replace, or remove the driver. Usually, such utilities also allow you to automatically identify corrupted drivers and fix them, as well as update outdated versions. For the most part, such applications are distributed on a paid basis, but almost always offer a demo period. it will be enough for you to solve the problem with the utility program. You can also look for free utilities that help to get the drivers working. often their use is more than enough if the touchpad buttons on a laptop do not work.
Turn on touchpad programmatically in Windows
Unfortunately, the above keyboard shortcuts are not suitable for all laptop models. As mentioned above, touchpads on HP notebooks can be activated by a special button / indentation located in the corner or on top of the touchpad. And for example, with Sony VAIO laptops, things can be even more complicated. they have an F key that is responsible for turning on the touchpad. What to do in such a situation? Everything is quite simple, you need to enable the touchpad in Windows 7 or Windows 8. It is done like this:
- We go to the “Control Panel” find the menu item “Hardware and Sound” then you need to get to “Devices and Printers”
Go to “Devices and Printers” you need to select the laptop icon, which is named after your computer. After clicking on the laptop icon, a “Control center” in which you need to select a menu item “Keyboard and Mouse”. Next, we find the sub-item “Integrated pointing device” and put a tick “Enable”.
If neither the hotkeys nor the software activation of the touchpad helped, then perhaps the problem lies deeper. This is what our next chapter is about.
How the touchpad turns on on Lenovo, Toshiba and HP laptops
And these manufacturers, like the ones listed above, care about the Maximum comfort of the user typing (playing a game, doing graphics or design, and so on). You may need to use one of the keys in the function row again. If not, take a closer look at the touchpad surface. Do you see a small depression in one of the corners? Tap on it twice, and then see if you could not solve the issue of why the touchpad stopped working on a Lenovo, HP or Toshiba laptop.
Unfortunately, the problem is not always solved with one touch. It may happen that in order to activate the touchpad you need to reboot the laptop and then find the corresponding option in the BIOS. The menu depends on the manufacturer, model, firmware version. before starting work, we advise you to find information about your laptop on the Internet, for example, on the manufacturer’s website.
Restart your laptop and check if the touchpad is enabled in BIOS
If your touchpad stops working and there is no hearing or ghost in the system, then you need to check the driver and BIOS of the laptop. On many laptop models, the touchpad is enabled in the computer BIOS. For beginners who do not know what BIOS is and how to enter this BIOS, we advise you to read the instructions at the link. Got into the BIOS, you need to find the menu item, which is responsible for turning on the touchpad. This item is usually called “Internal Pointing Device”, that from the translation into Russian, just the touch panel means.
Here is a general procedure for working with BIOS. This menu, in most ways presented in English, contains all the settings for hardware-software interaction. in particular, and the touchpad. You can safely control the operation of the device from here if pressing the function keys did not bring a positive result. This is done like this:
- Reboot or completely Turn off the laptop.
- When you turn it on again, quickly, to the OS welcome screen, press the key to enter the BIOS. It can be F2, F8, Delete and so on. it all depends on the manufacturer and the current firmware. In rare cases, it may be necessary to use a combination of two or three keys.
- Now we are looking for the settings of the touch panel, or rather, its hardware part. Most likely, the parameters you need are contained in the main Advanced section. Here you need to find an item in the name of which the words Internal Pointing Device are present. Enable the option by setting the item to Enabled.
- Exiting the BIOS, without fail saving the settings. To do this, you can press F10. and then confirm your desire to leave the menu.
- When you turn on the laptop again, which will start automatically after exiting, the touchpad should finally work.
We remind you again: the names of sections, subsections, and items can vary significantly. both in different manufacturers and in different laptop models. Before starting work, we strongly advise you to find information about the BIOS features on the official website or trustworthy forums. and only then make any changes to the system.
Disabling the touchpad, if you suddenly decide that you do NOT want to use it anymore, is carried out in the same way as described above. but now you need to set the selected parameter to Disabled.
Accordingly, you need to set this parameter to “Enabled”.
The touchpad is also enabled via the Fn key
It often happens that the key responsible for activating the touchpad is combined with one of the functional ones in the F1-12 row. Find the Matching icon, something like a crossed out rectangle, and click on the button. Depending on the laptop model, you may first need to hold down the additional Fn key. Do not release it until you touch the main one. If you cannot figure out which function key is responsible for activating and deactivating the touchpad, they will all take them one by one. the commands that you do not need are canceled by pressing the same button again.
The question of what to do if the touchpad stops working on a laptop can be given a much simpler answer if information about the device’s activity is displayed on the screen. in the notification panel or in a pop-up window. By pressing the keys, carefully watch the images that appear on the display. this way you can experimentally quickly determine which of the function keys is responsible for which of the available options.
Please note: in the laptop settings, the touchpad can be disabled when the mouse is connected. Depending on your needs, you can either deactivate this option, or disconnect the mouse from the laptop while working with the touchpad. If you plan to work with both the mouse and the device considered in the article, we advise you to choose the first option. it does NOT take much time to execute.
So, the first thing to do if the touchpad doesn’t work is to find the hotkey that turns it on. Since all laptop manufacturers are different, the combination of hot keys is also different. For example, on Hewlett Packard (HP) laptops, the hotkey is just one special key that you can use to enable the touchpad. Or a dedicated button / dimple (depending on the HP laptop model), which is located in the corner / top of the touchpad.
Most other laptop manufacturers use a bunch of Fn keys and some of the keys from F1 to F9 to turn on the touchpad. Usually, the desired key has a schematic icon, as shown in the photo above. Here are the popular keyboard shortcuts for the most common manufacturers:
- For Acer laptops. FnF7.
- For ASUS Laptops. FnF9.
- On Lenovo laptop. FnF8.
- Dell Laptop. FnF5.
- For Toshiba. FnF9 keys.
- For Sony Vayo. FnF1.
- For Samsung Laptops. Fn F5 or F6.
- For ISI. Fn F3 keys.
- For Packard Bell. FnF6 keys.
Reinstalling the touchpad driver
Theoretically, after you remove the driver using any of the methods below, it should be automatically restored by the system. However, this does not always happen. and below we will tell you how to manually restore the service utility. This can be done in several ways, each of which has its own obvious advantages and weaknesses:
- Downloading from the official website of the manufacturer. Of course, the company that released your laptop knows better than anyone what utilities are needed to run it. In addition, the developer constantly updates the drivers. it is on the official website that you can find the latest versions, which may have already solved the problem with the touchpad or optimized some settings. An additional advantage. the site will present versions for all supported OS models, and you do not have to guess whether the product downloaded from a third-party resource is suitable for your laptop or not. A little difficulty. you have to use the search to find the driver you need. At first, you can get confused in the site. but after a few updated you will navigate without any difficulties and freely download, if the touchpad on a laptop in Windows 10 does not work again, current utilities.
- Automatic search. Let the operating system choose the driver for the touchpad itself. for example, run the “Update Center” and wait until the data necessary for the normal operation of the touchpad is downloaded and installed on the laptop. Minuses. Possible absence of the driver in the Microsoft database (not all manufacturers find time to update it) or the presence of only old versions. In such a situation, we advise you to use the first of the proposed methods.
- Search in a special program. We have already written above in applications for working with drivers. They work in fully automatic mode. just start a scan and select which of the proposed data should be installed on the laptop. Before starting the installation, we highly recommend creating a restore point.
Some laptop models have a separate touchpad power button
It is possible that your laptop is equipped with a special key that allows you to activate or deactivate the touchpad in one motion. There is nothing complicated in this: just press the button and check if the device has started to respond to commands. The key may be in the West or, on the contrary, refuse to be pressed. then try to gently “stir up” it or proceed to the manipulations described in the following subheadings.
Another option is touch activation. This method primarily applies to HP products. Take a close look: your touchpad may have a small rectangular icon in one corner. Double-tap the icon. perhaps this will help turn on the touchpad. On Acer or Asus laptops, the power button can be located right next to the device. Click this button, check if the problem is fixed. and if not, go to the next method. Quite often, the buttons do not work the first time. perform a few clicks to make sure that the method is 100% unsuitable.
When the touchpad does not work on an Asus laptop or any other, it is first of all recommended to check the availability and freshness of the drivers for the device. Go to the “Device Manager” and find there the item related to the touch input device. Further actions depend on the opened picture.
Perhaps Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or another system incorrectly installed the driver on the new laptop, having done it twice, and now it is confused about which device to access. In such a situation, you need to right-click on one of them and select “Remove device”; perform the same operation with other unnecessary devices, and then restart the laptop. After rebooting, the system should automatically pick up the necessary drivers, and the error will disappear.
If the device is displayed as needed, in a single copy, updating or rolling back drivers can help. This is especially true if a yellow exclamation mark is displayed in the name of the touchpad in the “Device Manager”. Move the cursor over this name and call the context menu. Select Properties from the list. In the window that opens, select the “Driver” tab. Then proceed according to the situation. For a start it is worth trying “Update” software. If the tap on the touchpad stopped working after updating Windows, then the “rollback” option is provided. It also does NOT hurt to download from the official website of the laptop manufacturer, from the Drivers section, a fresh package of suitable drivers specifically for your device model.
Why the touchpad does not work on a laptop?
If the touchpad on a laptop does not work, then some users will simply take and connect an external mouse to it, and for the second it will become a serious problem. Laptops are bought largely because of their mobility and ease of use on the road. And in THESE cases, the touchpad is more convenient to handle than the mouse. In today’s article, we will consider the main Possible causes of the breakdown, and if you CANNOT cope on your own, you can contact us for laptop repair.
Purpose and benefits of the touchpad
For a portable device such as a laptop, it is important to have as few moving, protruding, and pluggable parts as possible. It should be as self-sufficient as possible.
A small touchpad allows you to move your finger over it and thus move the mouse cursor. It also contains the rest of the functional actions. for example, tapping (tap, tapping) will mean clicking with the left mouse button, moving vertically along the left edge. scrolling, etc. MacBooks also have a 3D touch function, when you can, using several fingers at once, zoom in or out of the picture, flip the image.
In addition, the touchpad usually has two buttons that act as the left and right mouse buttons.
For all its conveniences, the touchpad just gets in the way for many. Indeed, it can be inconvenient to touch him while working with text or any other similar situation. Therefore, the developers have provided options to allow the user to activate or deactivate this area. It is also relevant if your laptop is on the table at home and it is more convenient for you to work with it with a mouse, as on a stationary PC.
Five ways to turn on the touchpad
When the touchpad on a laptop suddenly stopped working, this does NOT mean that the device is broken. You may have turned it off accidentally. There are five ways to enable / disable the function:
Some notebook models (HP in particular) have a small recess in the corner of the touch panel. Many do not know, but this is the very “magic button”. If you double-click on it, the touch panel will be activated or, conversely, disabled. Instead of double-tapping, the option to hold your finger can also be used.
All models, without exception, have the ability to activate and deactivate the function using hot keys (Fn F1-F12). The pictogram drawn on it will tell you which key to press. For example, if the touchpad does not work on an Acer laptop, then you usually need to press the Fn F7 key combination. Table of popular manufacturers of laptops and hot keys embedded in them:
The touchpad can be disabled or enabled programmatically through the options window in Windows 10. You need to go to the Devices section and find the “touchpad”. The switch, which is there, must be in the “On” position. Also, check next to see if there is a checkmark in the “Do not disconnect the touchpad when connecting a mouse.” If it is removed, then immediately after connecting the peripheral mice to the laptop, the sensor will be deactivated.
You can also try to solve the problem of why the touchpad on a laptop does not work through the BIOS settings. To get into them, hold down the Delete or F2 key while starting the device. In the BIOS, find the Pointing Device item and set the option to Enabled. Click “Exit with Saving” or a similar button to save the changes and restart the laptop.
Finally, you can see the instructions for the laptop. But is it not a paper manual, but electronic documentation, which is usually more detailed. You can often find it on the C: drive in the Documentation directory.
You have learned the standard and provided by manufacturers methods of solving the problem. If none of them had any effect (for example, the touchpad on the computer is turned on for all the points, but does not work), there may be a breakdown.
If you are the lucky owner of a laptop with a touch screen, then the reason for the touchpad glitches may be in the resources that are not properly allocated between them. In hybrid devices, the touchpad and screen often conflict. At the same time, at first the touchpad starts to work poorly, slowly responds to pressing, and then completely fails.
In such a situation, you will have to choose between a touchpad and a touchscreen. If you find that you need the panel, then you need to turn off the screen. To do this, press WinR, thus calling the “Run” window. Type services.Msc in the input field to open the list of system services. Find a service with a name similar to Tablet PC Input Service among them. Right click on it, click Disable. After that, the touchscreen should stop working and the touch panel should start functioning normally.
If you bought a laptop to take full advantage of its functions, and are not ready to give up on them, then you can try rolling back or updating the drivers for input devices (mouse, display). If the configuration is correct, then the conflict between devices will disappear. Or just remove both devices from the “Device Manager” and reboot. When turned on, with a high degree of probability, the system will install everything correctly.
The touchpad does not work due to hardware problems
This happens after disassembly or after assembly. The most common reason is that after the dismantling was done, they forgot to plug in the power cable for the touch pad. Other prerequisites:
- Moisture has entered the sensor;
- There was a temperature drop, due to which the contacts of the loop oxidized (therefore, you cannot turn on the laptop immediately after coming home from frost).
The plume generally oxidizes very quickly, this is the weak point of any touchpad. And oxidized contacts can no longer fully transmit signals. At the same time, the device often fails gradually: first, the keys or the scroll area stop working, and only then the main part breaks down.
serious breakdowns include cracks in the sensor or a malfunction of the entire south bridge of the laptop (the south bridge is a microcircuit that is responsible for the functioning of all connected peripherals). A cracked sensor can be replaced with a new one, and fixing the south bridge is a matter purely for a specialist who knows how to disassemble and restore the motherboard.
So, what if the touchpad on a laptop is not working? The first is to check that it is turned on. The second is to update the drivers. The third is to solve hardware problems.
