Touchpad Does Not Work On Laptop MSI

Touchpad An age-old feature that has long replaced alternative mouse controls. With it, we can fully control our device, be it a laptop or a hybrid tablet. Many laptops (Acer, Asus, HP, lenovo, Dell) have problems with the touchpad. What to do if the touchpad does not work on a laptop in Windows 10? Let’s look at 5 ways to fix this problem.

Updating or rolling back the touchpad driver

Try updating or rolling back your touchpad driver. Go to the same device manager as described above. Locate your Touchpad device, usually named after your laptop brand (Dell TouchPad, Lenovo TouchPad, Synaptics, HP TouchPad, Acer TouchPad, Asus TouchPad.) Right click on your driver and select properties. Next, click Update to see if there are any useful updates for your touchpad.

Many people have reported on the Microsoft forums that the Touchpad stopped working exactly after updating Windows 10, for this you need to select Driver Rollback. If the Rollback button is off, then you have a previous version of the driver.

Disable touchscreen input service for hybrid notebooks

If your laptop is a hybrid (laptop and tablet in one with a touchscreen display.) There is a chance that the touchscreen input service that controls stylus functionality is interfering with your touchpad.

To disable the service press winR, then type services.Msc and find TabletInputService or Tablet PC Input Service in the list of services. Right click on it, then disable it. A very inconvenient solution for who uses a touch screen and a touchpad, but you can continue to be smart and try to remove the drivers, rollback, update and then restart the service.

Many laptops (Acer, Asus, HP, lenovo, Dell) have problems with the touchpad. What to do if the touchpad does not work on a laptop in Windows 10? Let’s look at 5 ways to fix this problem.

Enable touchpad in mouse properties

In many cases, the device manager does NOT work in order to enable Touchpat on a laptop. If your Touchpat still does not work on a laptop in windows 10, then go to properties mouse.

  • Type mouse in windows search bar and go to Mouse Preferences.
  • Click Additional mouse options, in the window that opens, go to Device Settings, the Touchpad tab or as in the picture.
  • Find your Touchpad and click “enable”.

Re-enable the touchpad using the Fn key

One story happened to me when I turned on Wi-Fi on my laptop and inadvertently turned off the touchpad touchpad. For a long time I was looking for the reason, immediately not realizing what happened. Everything turned out to be SIMple, in laptops there is a button for additional functions called Fn from the bottom left of the keyboard. To enable any function on a laptop, hold down the Fn and F1 key combination. F12. On these same F1-F12 buttons, pictures or symbols are drawn to apply the parameter. For example, to turn on the touchpad, you need to press FnF7, on the F7 button itself there will be an image of a supposedly touchpad. You can press all buttons in order FnF1. F12, but remember that there is a function to turn off the display, press again the buttons on which the screen went out.

On some HP notebooks, the touchpad can be turned on and off by double-tapping the edge of the touchpad itself. Asus and acer brands may have a separate button next to the touchpad. If the Touchpad still does not work, then move on.

Removing Other Mouse Drivers

There are times when in the past you have connected a whole bunch of drivers from different mouse devices and you have never removed them. Some drivers from mouse manufacturers themselves automatically disable the Touchpad. Go to Device Manager by pressing the WinR keyboard shortcut and type devmgmt.Msc at the prompt.

Find the term for pointing to mice and other pointing devices, click on the shortcut to expand the category and delete all the mouse drivers in order until the touchpad starts working on your laptop. If it doesn’t work, try restarting the system after removing all drivers. Touchpad NOT working? Moving on to the next item.

ALGorithm of actions when the touchpad fails

The touchpad is reliably protected from moisture and dirt, rarely breaks. Failures are mainly caused by program “glitches”. As a result, the sensor does not perceive pressure, but does not recognize gestures, its sensitivity is reduced. Also, the cursor jumps randomly across the monitor or, conversely, slows down. There are a number of problems for which the sensor does not work. In this case, you must initially identify the cause of the malfunction. The main ones are presented in the table below.

Before going to the service center, you should try to fix the problem yourself:

  • Check if the touchpad is enabled, and if not, enable it;
  • Clean the panel surface;
  • Update or reinstall the driver;
  • Activate the touchpad in BIOS;
  • OS rollback.

To check the health of the touchpad, it initially makes sense to restart the laptop in safe mode, and then proceed to the described actions.

Turning on the sensor

It is necessary to check the activity of the sensor by SIMultaneously clamping Fn F2-12. Often the touchpad does not work because it was previously turned off. Different devices provide an individual set of keyboard shortcuts to perform actions, for example, in Asus. FnF9, and in Lenovo. FnF6. In some variations, the sensor power key is displayed on the panel itself. It looks like a barely noticeable depression or dot. In this case, the touchpad is activated by double clicking on it.

Touchpad not working on a laptop 5 ways to solve the problem

What to do if the touchpad on a laptop stops working? DO NOT immediately carry it to the service. The bottom line is not always a hardware failure: it may be incorrect operation of drivers or another software failure. SIMple actions will help to revive it, which even an inexperienced user can do.

Activating the touchpad in BIOS

In case of a situation “the touchpad stopped working” it makes sense to also check the BIOS settings.

In the bootloader menu, for example, in Acer Aspire or Asus X541NA, the sensor is labeled as Internal Pointing Device. It is located in the Advanced tab. If Disable is written in brackets, switch to Enabled and save (F10. Yes).

Cleaning the touchpad

Often the touchpad on a laptop does not work due to trivial pollution. To remove grease and moisture, the sensor must be wiped with special napkins or a lint-free microfiber cloth. The sensor surface must always be kept dry and clean.

GPT and MBR standards

In rare cases, the touchscreen on a laptop does not work due to a system error. The problem lies in the program code of the disk, which is required to boot. Two standards are presented: GPT and MBR. The first is a GUID partition structure that carries information within the hard drive partitions. This is part of UEFI, which is used by newer PC models instead of BIOS. Second Acts as a memory segment containing the boot loader for the operating system. MBR is a traditional structure and is compatible with all operating systems. The first option has a drawback. this standard does not support old systems, which is why a system conflict arises.

The error is resolved as follows: you need to see which segment is implemented on the laptop using the command timeline. The window opens with a combination of WinR. In the term “diskpart” is entered, after. “list disk” and “Enter” to select the transformation structure. If there is an asterisk in the list that appears in the last column “GPT”, then this is the first version of the standard. If it is empty. the second one. In the first case, it can be assumed that a system conflict interferes with the touchscreen. The standard of the system disk is changed without losing data using special software. Alternatively. AOMEI Partition Assistant.

If you follow the instructions, performing the actions step by step, then the result will be to quickly eliminate the malfunction.

Updating or reinstalling drivers

Regarding software problems, they can manifest themselves in different ways: scrolling does not work, the touchpad does NOT respond to a click. Functionality is usually only partially lost. In this case, you need to scan the system with an antivirus and see the status of the drivers.

You can update, rollback or uninstall the program in Device Manager, Mice tab. The touchpad is referred to as HID device or TouchPad. The problem is signaled by a yellow triangle. Installing the official software expands the touchpad functions.

Sometimes the touchpad doesn’t work after downloading new programs. Then the system rollback will help to restore the device’s performance.

Broken touch panel

If you have completed all the Recommended actions and the sensor on your laptop does not work, the problem is in the hardware. As a result of the shocks and vibrations that a laptop is often exposed to, the touchpad cable is disconnected or the connector lock breaks. Also, a number of problems can interfere with the operation of the sensor model:

  • Poor contact between elements;
  • Connector oxidation, etc.

This is precisely determined only by a specialist after diagnosis. Therefore, the only solution remains. to send the laptop to a service center.

Touchpad works, but not good

How it manifests itself badly: it is difficult to position the pointer at the desired point, the cursor obeys, jumps across the screen, moves too slow or too fast, jumps at random, etc. The most common reason for this is “it is served.” We ate, but did not wash our hands, put a couple of oil stains on the touch panel. and the touchpad does not work. Lather a little cotton swab and clean the surface of the touchpad, then wipe it with a damp cloth and wait until it dries.

The touchpad is clean, but still NOT responsive. They probably washed their hands and forgot to wipe them. The touchpad should be used with dry, clean fingers. If so, then the current sensitivity settings may not be suitable for you. We go into the control panel, there we find the item “Mouse” and Play with the settings until the touchpad does not work as it should.

If the touchpad itself works, that is, the cursor reacts to touches, but various gadgets do not work, for example, the scroll on the touchpad or the pressing area does not work, then the reason for this behavior is software. First, you need to install or update the driver from the laptop manufacturer’s website, as well as install special software to configure the touchpad.

Touchpad does not work on a laptop

Many laptop users DO NOT like the touchpad and work only with a mouse, rather than accept an alternative way to control the cursor. And in vain. Modern laptops are so mobile that they easily fit into a small bag with documents that you don’t want to load with a charger and a mouse. And how to work with the mouse when the laptop is on its knees? However, it is enough to work with the touchpad for about five minutes, and you get used to it easily.

For those who are in the tank, the touchpad (from the English. Touchpad. touch panel) is the same panel with a couple of buttons below the keyboard, moving your finger over which you can control the cursor. This is a feature of laptops. Now let’s look at the reasons why the touchpad does not work on a laptop, as well as options for solving the problem.

The touchpad doesn’t work at all

There are a lot of reasons why the touchpad does not work on a laptop. It may sound silly, but most of the time it’s just turned off. Try the hotkey combination FnF5-12. Different laptops have their own combination, look at the F keys with numbers, one of them should have a touchpad drawn. In our case, the combination is FnF7, and the icon in the form of a panel on which you move your finger.

The second option, the touchpad is disabled by software. Look at the status of the system utilities responsible for the operation of the equipment: usually in the tray (lower right corner of the taskbar) there is a program icon that allows you to quickly turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or the touchpad. You can also visit the Device Manager.

If the programs work, but the touchpad doesn’t work, you have to dig deeper. The touchpad is in contact with the motherboard through a ribbon cable, which is fixed in a special fastener. A laptop is also mobile, to transport it. During transportation, it is subjected to shock, vibration, shaking, etc., as a result, the latch of the touchpad cable may open or break off. You can disassemble and check the contacts yourself, or it is better to contact a proven laptop repair shop.

Hardware and mechanical damage

If the touchpad on a laptop does not work, and in addition to it, the keyboard or USB ports are moping, then the matter is in the motherboard. It is necessary to diagnose a laptop in a service center, it is necessary to check the operability of the south bridge and controllers. There is only one way out. a direct road to laptop repair.

Mechanical damage to the touch panel is not cured. They hit in the heat with a fist, and after that the touchpad does not work, you will have to change the panel. Anyway, blows to the laptop usually hit the wallet. If only the buttons are pushed through, then not all is lost. Minor repairs are usually a way out. disassemble the touchpad, return the keys to their original position, where to glue the fasteners, where to put an elastic band, and everything will be fine.

READ  Laptop Running But Black Screen

There are many ways to fix your touchpad. However, the first decision to be taken before repairing is to reboot the system and check for driver updates.

What is a touchpad

Moving the arrow-shaped pointer on the screen of stationary computers is possible only with the mouse. The portable PC (laptop) is equipped, however, with a second control device. a non-removable touch panel. Its other name is the touchpad from the English word touchpad.

The touchpad is rectangular in shape, often with rounded edges, and is located under the keyboard on a laptop. There are always two buttons at the bottom of the touchpad, SIMilar to the keys on a conventional computer mouse.

The touchpad on the laptop is located under the keyboard and looks like a rectangle

The arrow is controlled by different types of touches, taps and finger movements. As a result, the PC user performs actions on the computer, which, it would seem, could not be performed without a mouse: launching utilities, folders, menus and services; work in the programs themselves; shutting them down and shutting down the PC.

Physical breakdown check

If all of the above methods DO NOT solve the problem of a disabled touchpad, perhaps the point is that the touchpad cannot physically work due to a breakdown. In this case, the touchpad needs to be replaced or repaired. To diagnose and fix the problem, you need to take the laptop to a computer repair service.

If your laptop has recently been disassembled and cleaned, the touchpad may have stopped working because the touchpad plug was not reinserted into the connector. If you plug it in, the touchpad will work. The service center will also help you in this matter.

Touchpad on a Windows 10 laptop: how to enable, configure, and what to do if it doesn’t work

Many laptop users are sometimes faced with the problem of the touchpad not working. It turns off suddenly and does NOT respond to any touch. As a result, you cannot control the cursor if you have a removable mouse. What to do in this case? How to get the touchpad back working?

Checking for viral activity

The touchpad may NOT respond to touch if the computer has malware blocking it. In this case, you need to use the antivirus that is installed on your computer. Each antivirus has its own interface, however, as a rule, even a beginner can easily understand it. In particular, you need to find a section for scanning the system. Let’s look at the step-by-step instructions using Avast as an example:

  • In the lower right corner of the screen on the “taskbar” there is a so-called tray. It’s officially called the “Notification Area”. It contains icons of running utilities, including the icon of your antivirus. In this case, it is Avast antivirus. We click on it with the left mouse button so that its window appears on the screen. Open Avast from the Windows tray
  • Go to the “Protection” tab and select the “Scan” item. In the “Protection” section, open the “Scanning” block
  • In the section that opens, select the type of scan: intelligent or full. Run smart or full scan
  • Avast can detect malware during the scan. At the same time, he himself isolates it (adds it to quarantine) from the second files or deletes it.

What to do if the touchpad still doesn’t work

Pressing certain keys on a laptop keyboard and setting it in the “Control Panel” often solves the problem of the disabled touchpad. In such cases, you need to update the touchpad driver or enable it using the BIOS menu. If these two methods fail, you need to scan the PC for malware. It is also possible that the touchpad has a physical breakdown.

BIOS setup

BIOS is a set of certain firmware required for the operation of the PC hardware and devices connected to it. This menu is loaded separately from Windows. All changes in it must be made very carefully, with knowledge of the matter, since incorrect settings can lead to PC malfunctions.

The touchpad may just be disabled in the BIOS menu. If all the previous activation methods did not help you, use the following instructions:

  • While starting up your laptop, hold down one of the two keys: F2 or Del. This will open the blue BIOS menu.
  • Switch directly to the Advanced section.
  • Find a parameter called Internal Pointing Device. If the value is “Disabled”, then immediately change it to “Enabled”. Set the Internal Pointing Device parameter to Enabled
  • Now we exit the BIOS menu with saving. To do this, click on the Exit with Saving or Save Exit button. So, the changes to the parameters will take effect with the subsequent loading of Windows.

Using the keyboard

You can activate the touch keyboard if it suddenly turns off and does not work using a special keyboard shortcut, which, unfortunately, depends on the laptop manufacturer. There is no single composition.

This combination necessarily includes the Fn button. It is usually located to the left of the Windows button that launches the system’s Start menu. The second key One of the function buttons acts: from F1 to F12. You can define a button using the icon drawn on it in the form of a panel, which can also be crossed out. For example, for Sony devices, the combination Fn F1.

The button for enabling and disabling the touchpad usually has an icon in the form of a crossed out touchpad.

Let’s present a few more manufacturer matches and combinations:

  • There are two options for Asus: FnF9 or FnF7.
  • For Lenovo. FnF8 or FnF5.
  • For Acer. FnF7.
  • For Dell Use FnF5.
  • Toshiba. FnF5.
  • For Samsung, they also use the combination FnF5.

On HP laptops, there is usually a button in the left corner of the touchpad that turns the touchpad on and off. To activate, you just need to do a double tap.

In the standard program from the manufacturer

Laptop manufacturers such as Dell and ASUS often release their own software with which you can enable and configure the touchpad. For ASUS, this utility is called Smart Gesture. Usually it is already preinstalled. You just need to start it, and in it you already disable the functions of deactivating the touchpad with a mouse connected.

  • Use Windows Search to find Smart Gesture if you have an ASUS laptop. The utility can also be launched through Windows Explorer. Open the system drive and the Program Files folder. It should have an ASUS section. Find the file with the utility application in it and open it. Open Asus Smart Gesture in Program Files folder on system drive
  • In the window of the standard utility from the company, go directly to the “Mouse detection” tab. Uncheck “Disable touchpad when mouse is connected” and click on “Apply”
  • We remove the check mark from the item “Disable the touch panel when connecting a mouse”.
  • To change the settings take effect, click on the “Apply” button located in the lower right corner of the window.

Method for a touchscreen device

There are so-called hybrid laptops: they are both a tablet with a touchscreen display and a laptop with a regular keyboard. If this is your case, it is possible that your touchpad does NOT want to work because of the conflict between touchscreen and touchpad services for cursor control.

In this case, it is necessary to forcibly turn off the touch screen service in the “Task Manager”.

  • We click on the “Taskbar” with the right mouse button and select the “Task Manager” section in the list on a black background. Open “Task Manager” from the “Taskbars” menu
  • The same window can be opened using a combination of three keys: Ctrl Alt Delete.
  • Go immediately to the Services tab. Click on the “Status” column so that the running services are at the top of the list. this will make it easier for you to search for the desired item. Open the services tab and look for TabletInputService or Tablet PC Input Service
  • In a long list, try to find one of two services: TabletInputService or Tablet PC Input Service. Now we click on it with the right mouse button and select the “Stop” option.
