To measure the battery life of a laptop, we used two boot scenarios: operating mode and HD video viewing mode. During testing, the power consumption mode was set to “Balanced”, the screen brightness was set to 50% of the maximum, and the wireless module was turned off.
In the mode of operation using the script, the user typing text in a text editor and viewing photos in a slideshow using the Windows Photo Viewer were simulated.
In the video mode (Media Player Classic), a video with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 and a bit rate of 41.1 Mbps (AVC codec) was used. Video playback used hardware GPU acceleration (DXVA).
Considering that we are dealing with a hybrid device that combines both a laptop and a tablet, as well as the fact that the keyboard dock has an additional battery, we tested the Asus Transformer Book T300LA in both laptop and tablet modes.

As you can see, the battery life of the Asus Transformer Book T300LA is record high. In the video mode, the Asus Transformer Book T300LA laptop and tablet provide more than five and a half hours of battery life, and in the text mode. more than twelve hours. This is a record battery life to date.
However, it should be noted that the additional battery in the keyboard dock provides practically nothing. So, the difference in the time of watching a movie in laptop mode and in tablet mode is only 10 minutes, which, of course, is very small and is actually comparable to the measurement error.
The Asus Transformer Book T300LA laptop uses the island-style keyboard with an increased distance between the keys, which has already become traditional for modern laptops. A separate numeric block (NumPad), as well as keyboard backlighting, is not provided in this case.
The main keys on the keyboard are 15.4 x 15.4 mm in size. The keys themselves are plastic, black.

The quality of the keyboard in this notebook can be considered very good. Of the advantages, we can note the fact that it has a rigid base and does not bend when you press the keys. In early December 2013, Asus announced on the Russian market a new 13.3-inch hybrid laptop Transformer Book T300LA based on the fourth generation Intel Core processor, a distinctive feature of which is a detachable display that can work as an independent device. a tablet running the Windows 8 operating system. The laptop went on sale at the end of December, but we also got a preliminary engineering version for tests, and therefore such moments as packaging and packaging will remain outside the scope of our review.
Appearance and ergonomics of the case
Despite the fact that formally the Asus device does not belong to the category of ultrabooks, in terms of its characteristics and concept of use, this laptop can well be attributed to the category of third generation ultrabooks.
Indeed, the dimensions of the Asus Transformer Book T300LA are 34.2 x 21.6 x 2.34 cm, and its weight is 1.9 kg. At the same time, do not forget that this is not a classic laptop, but a convertible laptop, in which the detachable screen is a full-fledged tablet. In tablet mode, the overall dimensions are 34.2 x 21.6 x 1.15 cm, and the weight of the tablet is 1.1 kg. The docking station itself (keyboard with additional battery) measures 34.0 x 21.6 x 1.1 cm and weighs 0.8 kg.
The case of the Asus Transformer Book T300LA laptop is made almost entirely of dark silver metal. And only the bottom of the dock is made of plastic.
The system for attaching the screen to the docking station is one long hinge that is located at the top of the docking station (above the keyboard). This loop has a magnetic groove into which the screen is installed. In order to detach the screen from the docking station, you must press the button located at the top center of the hinge. In addition, after connecting the keyboard dock to connect it, you must connect it using the dedicated toggle switch located in the upper left corner of the docking station. There is an indicator next to this toggle switch that will light up when the dock is turned on. There is also a traditional Caps Lock indicator.
The system of attaching the screen to the docking station allows you to deflect the screen itself relative to the plane of the keyboard at an angle of approximately 115 degrees, which, of course, may not be enough in some conditions. However, such a small opening angle of the screen is a problem of many laptops with a detachable screen. And the point in this case is not in any peculiarities of the hinge hinge, but in the fact that with a larger opening angle of the screen, the system will become unstable. Indeed, since the mass of the docking station is only 0.8 kg, and the mass of the screen is 1.1 kg, then with a larger opening angle of the screen, such a system will simply overturn. Even with an opening angle of 115 degrees, it cannot be said that the position of the laptop on the table is very stable. It is enough to touch the screen with your hand a little, and the laptop will tip over and take a position of stable balance when the heavy screen lies on the table.
Also note that when the laptop is placed horizontally on the table in the closed state, it rests on four rubber feet and its position is very stable. However, when the screen is opened, the laptop begins to lean on the table with the protruding edge of the screen. At the same time, the lower part of the laptop rises slightly and the two rubber feet no longer touch the table. It is no longer possible to call this position of the laptop stable. The laptop slides easily on the table and there is a risk of scratching both the table itself and the edge of the laptop screen.
If we talk about the tablet mode of using the Asus Transformer Book T300LA hybrid notebook, then the following circumstance should be borne in mind. In tablet mode, this device is quite heavy. Nevertheless, the weight of 1.1 kg for a tablet is a bit too much and such a tablet cannot be held in the hands for a long time. Therefore, first of all, Asus Transformer Book T300LA is just a laptop, and the tablet mode can be considered as an additional feature.
The tablet part of the laptop, that is, the detachable screen, has one USB 3.0 interface and a Micro-HDMI connector for connecting an external monitor. Both connectors are located on the left side of the tablet. In addition, on the left side there is a mini-jack audio jack for connecting headphones, a power jack, a rocker-type key for controlling the sound volume and an LED indicator of the battery charge. This indicator is white when the dock or tablet is connected to a power source and the battery is 95-100% charged. If the battery is orange, it means that the docking station is running on AC power and the battery is less than 95% charged, or the tablet is connected to the docking station for recharging, and the battery charge is less than 30%. A blinking orange battery indicates the dock or tablet is powered on and the battery has less than 10% charge. WELL, and if the indicator is off, then this means that the docking station or tablet is running on battery power, and the charge level is in the range from 10 to 100%.

Well, at the bottom there is a slot for SD / SDHC memory cards (this slot is not available in laptop mode).
In addition, the tablet also has a traditional Windows key, pressing which in tablet mode returns to the home screen.
Also, the tablet has two traditional cameras (front and rear) and an ambient light sensor, which allows you to automatically adjust the screen brightness and, of course, a built-in accelerometer, which is responsible for screen rotation, which is important in tablet mode. However, how to block the screen rotation function (a typical feature for tablets) remained a mystery to us. The user manual does not say anything about this, and there are no special lock buttons.
On the keyboard dock itself, on its left side there is only one microUSB connector, which is designed to charge the battery of the keyboard dock itself. In this case, it is assumed that to charge the docking station, it is necessary to connect it with a USB cable (it should be included in the package) with the tablet. Actually, this, in our opinion, is another drawback of this laptop. That is, if you want to recharge the docking station, you will have to occupy the only USB port on the tablet, which, of course, is inconvenient. And constantly carrying another cable with you is not at all comme il faut. And why it is not possible to charge the docking station directly through the tablet when it is connected is absolutely not clear. After all, such a solution is both logical and convenient.
The Asus Transformer Book T300LA laptop uses a classic clickpad with simulated keystrokes. The dimensions of the working area of the touchpad are 106 × 62 mm, which is quite enough for comfortable work. The touchpad supports multi-touch function, and details of supported gestures can be found in the user manual.
The touch surface has a slight roughness and is barely noticeably deepened. The touchpad’s sensitivity is not satisfactory. The only caveat is a slight backlash when you press the keys, as a result of which they emit a clattering sound.
There is another drawback regarding both the touchpad and keyboard. The fact is that sometimes (and, as a rule, at the most inopportune moment) the docking station “falls off” along with the keyboard and touchpad, and in this case you either have to use the toggle switch to reconnect the docking station, or even restart the laptop. It has been noticed that especially often the keyboard and touchpad freeze when using the USB connector on the tablet (when an external USB drive is connected to the laptop or the docking station is connected to the tablet via a USB cable for charging). It is possible, of course, that this is the problem of our engineering sample of the laptop, but perhaps not. And if this problem is observed on samples that go on sale, then this, of course, will be the biggest drawback of the Asus Transformer Book T300LA laptop.

Work under load and idle
In idle mode, as it should be, the processor frequency in a laptop is 800 MHz (of course, we are talking about a balanced power consumption scheme), that is, there are no complaints about Intel SpeedStep technology. At the same time, the processor temperature in idle mode is no more than 35 ° C, which can be considered a very good result.
When the processor is loaded with the Stress CPU test (AIDA64 Extreme Edition utility. system stability test), which uses integer calculations, the processor frequency is 2.3 GHz. (Recall that for an Intel Core i5-4200U processor, the maximum frequency in Intel Turbo Boost mode is 2.6 GHz). The processor temperature in this boot mode does not exceed 60 ° C.
In principle, it should be so, since in this case all processor cores are loaded, and the maximum frequency in Intel Turbo Boost mode is reached when only one core is loaded and the requirements for power consumption and processor temperature are not exceeded.
When the processor is loaded with the Stress FPU test, which uses floating point calculations and heats up the processor to a greater extent, the maximum settled processor frequency is 1.9 GHz, and the temperature of the processor cores does not exceed 75 ° C.
As already noted, the Asus Transformer Book T300LA laptop uses a 13.3-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1920 × 1080. The screen, of course, is touch-sensitive and, like the touchpad, supports the multi-touch function.
According to our measurements, the maximum brightness of the screen against a white background is 212 cd / m², and the brightness against a black background is 0.25 cd / m². At maximum screen brightness, the contrast is 839: 1 and the gamma value is 2.32. In general, of course, the maximum screen brightness is too small. Even visually, when working with this laptop, I want to make the brightness higher.
The minimum screen brightness is 12.4 cd / m² against a white background and 0.04 cd / m² against a black background. At minimum screen brightness, contrast is 349: 1 and gamma is 2.32.

Asus Transformer Book T300LA has a color gamut of 91.3% of sRGB and 66.8% of Adobe RGB, and a color gamut of 100% of sRGB and 68.9% of Adobe RGB. Basically, this is a very good result.
The color filters of the LCD matrix mix the components a little with each other. As a result, the spectra of red and green overlap partially. At the same time, the blue spectrum is well isolated. In principle, this situation is quite typical for LCD matrices used in laptops.
The color temperature of the Asus Transformer Book T300LA’s LCD screen is ideal. It is stable and is approximately 6100 K. in the entire gray scale range (temperature changes in dark areas can be ignored, since this is caused by the instrument error in dark tones).
The color temperature stability is explained by the fact that the balance of the primary colors remains unchanged over the entire gray scale range.
As for the color accuracy (delta E), its value remains fairly stable across the entire gray scale (we do not take into account the dark areas) and ranges from 9 to 11 units. In principle, this is an acceptable value for this class of devices.
If we talk about the viewing angles of the screen, then they are really very wide. over, wide not only horizontal but also vertical angles, which is especially important in tablet mode. When looking at the image from any angle, the color does not distort and visually only slightly decreases the brightness
In general, we can say that the IPS-matrix in the Asus Transformer Book T300LA laptop is very good. It has a wide color gamut, very stable color temperature and acceptable color accuracy. The only drawback is the not very high maximum screen brightness.
The audio subsystem of the Asus Transformer Book T300LA laptop is based on the Conexant CX20751 HD codec, but the laptop itself has two built-in speakers.
Subjectively, the acoustics in this ultrabook are quite good. The volume is sufficient and the sound quality will satisfy most users.
To evaluate the audio output path intended for connecting headphones or external acoustics, we resorted to instrumental testing using an external Creative E-MU 0204 USB sound card and the RightMark Audio Analyzer 6.3.0 utility. Tested in stereo, 24-bit / 44.1 kHz.

Monitor matrix overclocking. theory and practice
I think that most PC users have heard about the fact that you can overclock a processor, video card or RAM. However, few people know about the fact that you can also overclock the monitor, and often the difference from its overclocking is more significant and noticeable than from overclocking other hardware. It is also safer, but more on that below.
Theory To begin with, what is meant by overclocking a monitor matrix? This implies an increase in the refresh rate of the monitor from the standard 60 Hz and by how much it will turn out. 70-75, sometimes 120, and even 150 Hz (!). Why is this needed? To improve the smoothness of the picture. What does it mean that the refresh rate of the monitor is 60 Hz? This means that the picture on the screen changes exactly 60 times per second. In this case, the video card can produce both a lower number of fps and more. If the number of frames issued by the video card is less than the refresh rate, then some frame will be displayed twice (or even three times), which can lead to noticeable delays. If the number of frames issued by the video card is greater than the monitor’s refresh rate, then it will turn out that two or three frames will be displayed on the screen at once, which will lead to artifacts:
The trade-off is the vertical sync setting. What is its essence? It tightly links one frame, prepared by the video card, to one update of the image on the monitor. And here, if your video card consistently produces more frames than the refresh rate of the monitor, then you will get an ideal smooth picture, but your video card will not be 100% loaded at times and will rest. And it is precisely this mode of operation that is often used in the system. for example, when you scroll in the browser, you do not see artifacts, and at the same time the scrolling is smooth.
Raising the refresh rate of the monitor kills two birds with one stone: firstly, now the vertical sync will go at a higher frequency, which means the smoothness will increase even more (I think everyone saw the difference in YouTube videos with 30 and 60 frames? Here also). Secondly, if your video card in games produced more than 60 frames per second, then now the threshold for the appearance of artifacts is pushed back to the new refresh rate, while the information on the screen will be updated more often, which is quite important for dynamic games.
Of course, the question arises. how safe is it? It is much safer than overclocking hardware: if the monitor cannot work at a given frequency, it simply will not turn on. If it works at a given frequency, it means that you will not have any problems. Overheating, as in the case of overclocking a processor or video card, is definitely not in danger.
Practice Now that we have figured out a little theory, you can move on to practice. The first thing you need to know is that any monitor and even laptop matrices are chasing, but there are several limiting factors at once. The first is the connection method: via DVI at a resolution of 1920×1080, you are unlikely to get more than 65 Hz. the reason is the rather low bandwidth of the interface. Through older HDMIs (up to 1.4) at the same resolution, you will most likely be able to get around 75-85 Hz. Well, through the new HDMI (1.4-2.0), Thunderbolt or DisplayPort there are practically no restrictions. you can get 120-165 Hz. Similarly, there is often no limitation for laptop matrices connected directly to the board. The second limiting factor is the matrix itself, or rather its controller. It happens that even with a fast connection, when the frequency increases, some image artifacts appear. alas, there is nothing you can do about it, except how to reduce the frequency to the last stable one.
Now let’s talk about how to overclock. Owners of video cards from Nvidia are lucky here. for them the algorithm is simple: you need to go to the Nvidia control panel, go to the “Change resolution” tab, click on the “Settings” button, in the window that opens, check the box to enable modes that are not supported by the display, and then click on the “Create custom resolution” button, and in the window that opens, we finally get access to change the refresh rate:
The frequency should be raised by 3-5 Hz, then press the “Test” button. If no artifacts appear and there is an image, raise the frequency even higher. As soon as artifacts appear or the image disappears, reduce it to the previous operating frequency, and then raise it by 1 Hz. in general, everything here is exactly the same as with normal overclocking of a video card. After you have found the desired refresh rate, simply save the resulting configuration, and it will appear in user permissions.
As you can see, there is no risk here. if the monitor “does not start up” at the frequency you specified, after 20 seconds the system will roll back the frequency value to the default. Alas, everything is so good only with video cards from Nvidia, with video cards from AMD or Intel everything is worse. there you cannot increase the frequency in the driver settings, however, there is a universal application that will help you do this. it is called Custom Resolution Utility (CRU), download its latest version can be found here.
I will warn you right away. the program’s problem is that it does not have a Test button, as is the case with Nvidia, so the frequencies are applied immediately and irrevocably. So if after setting the frequency you see a black screen, either connecting a second monitor and returning the settings to default will help you, or entering through safe mode and doing the same.
Working with the program is quite simple. you launch it, remove all resolutions from the standard ones and uncheck all the boxes on the left (I will not do this for myself, because I have already overclocked the matrix through the Nvidia settings): Now, under the window with Detailed resolutions, click on the Add button, set Automatic. LCD Reduced and below we change the refresh rate: Here the principle is the same. we increase the frequency by 3-5 Hz, click OK, save everything and reboot. Now we go into the AMD (or Intel) panel and set a new frequency: Here, in general, that’s all. as you can see, there is nothing difficult or dangerous.
Well, the last question remains. since almost all matrices are overclocked, why do not manufacturers do this from the factory? Everything is simple here: there is such a concept as a standard, and for the refresh rate of monitors it has been 60 Hz for a long time. Therefore, manufacturers, even if the matrix is capable of operating at 70-80 Hz, still limit its frequency to the standard 60 Hz. Secondly. often everything depends on the connection method. For example, you can transfer 1080p60 via any interface, even DVI, even Thunderbolt 3. But for 1080p80 you already need a special cable. DVI and old HDMI are no longer suitable. And in order not to create confusion, the manufacturers again limited themselves to 60 hertz.
As for the question, to overclock or not to overclock. it’s up to you and only you. If you managed to increase the frequency from 60 to 65 Hz, then there is no point in such overclocking, you will not see the difference. But when overclocked to 75 and above Hz, the difference becomes clearly visible, so the game is worth the candle here. It should also be borne in mind that after overclocking, the load on the video card will increase during normal operation. after all, it will now have to produce more frames per second, so if you overclock the matrix on a laptop, you should take into account that your battery life will decrease slightly.
