How to fix laptop keyboard not working in Windows 10
Sometimes a perfectly normal and working keyboard may stop working on a Windows laptop. If this happened to you, you can try the methods described below.
Laptop keyboard not working in Windows 10
If your laptop keyboard stops working, you can plug in an external USB keyboard or activate the onscreen keyboard on your computer for a while.
Once your makeshift or temporary keyboard is ready, you should be able to fix the problem using one of the following methods.
- Turn off your computer and start it again
- Use a keyboard shortcut
- Disable Input Filtering
- Update your keyboard driver
- Reinstall the Keyboard device
- Check for updates
We recommend that you try the methods described above in the exact order in which they are located.
1 Turn off your computer and start it again
The problem of not working keyboard on laptop may be due to minor software glitches. Therefore, completely disconnect the laptop from the power supply.
Wait 2 minutes and then restart it.
5 Reinstall the Keyboard device
Another solution is to remove the Keyboard device and then let Windows automatically reinstall the device back to your laptop.
- Right click on the Start button. and then click on Device Manager.
- On the Device Manager screen, right click on Keyboards and click on the Remove device option.
- After the device is removed, be sure to restart your computer.
When the computer restarts, Windows should automatically install back the device to the computer.
2 Use keyboard shortcuts
Another way to fix the problem is to eliminate the possibility of accidentally locking the laptop keyboard or certain keys on the keyboard. Users reported fixing keyboard issues by pressing the following keyboard shortcuts:
- Press the Windows Space key on your keyboard.
- Find the key with the lock icon on your laptop keyboard. Depending on the manufacturer of your laptop, this could be the Escape key, F10, or another key.
- Hold down the Shift key and press the padlock key.
3 Disable input filtering
The Filter input setting in Windows 10 allows your computer to manage accidental repeated keystrokes. However, this option can sometimes cause problems with some Keyboards.
- Right click on the Start button. and then click on the Options icon.
- On the Windows Settings screen, click on Accessibility.
- On the next screen, select Keyboard in the left pane and turn off Input Filtering.
Restart your computer and check if the keyboard is working.

- Right click on the Start button and click on the Device Manager option.
- On the Device Manager screen, right click on Keyboards and click on the Update Driver option.
- On the next screen, click on the option Automatically search for updated drivers.
After installing the updated driver, check if the keyboard is working.
Analysis of the causes of problems in the Windows 10 operating system, i.e. programmatic problems
If the analysis of the previous section did not reveal any hardware defects, then the reason is probably in the drivers.
It is recommended to reinstall them and follow the following sequence of actions:
- Open the “Control Panel”;
- Go to “Device Manager”;
- Find the keyboard and by calling the context menu on it, click on the “Delete” line;
- Then reboot the PC;
- Next, Windows 10 will independently find and install the necessary new software.
If the automatic search does not work, it is recommended to visit the official resource of the manufacturer that released the computer keyboard and enter the “Support” tab, where you need to find your equipment. After installing the software, restart the PC again. Done! The keyboard should now work fine. But if there is no success and after these steps, you will have to visit the BIOS.
Keyboard with USB plug
If there is a “keyboard” with a USB plug, problems are detected in the PC connector. It is recommended to reconnect it to a different PC port, and you should also check how the port works by inserting a USB flash drive into it. In the case when Windows 10 perfectly detects removable storage media, the reason is in the keyboard itself.
Keyboard with PS / 2 plug
These connectors have broken pins. It is necessary to remove the plug and make sure they are intact. If this is not the case, then you will need to completely replace the “keyboard” or solder the working plug.
Debugging in BIOS
To enter the BIOS, you need to click a certain button several times. This key is different for different PC models. You can find it out either by reading the manufacturer’s manual supplied with the computer or by carefully reading the inscriptions when booting the PC. Next, in BIOS, go to the tab with the settings of the components for inputting. In the case when they are disabled, you need to set them to the “Enabled” mode.
Methods to solve the problem when the keyboard does not work in Windows 10 system
After upgrading to Windows 10 or installing it from scratch, PC owners often face a problem when one of the most important elements of the computer that provides user feedback, namely the keyboard, does not work. This article provides detailed instructions for solving such a problem.
Where to start solving the problem?
First of all, it is recommended to determine the causes of the unpleasant defect.
The keyboard and all other peripherals are not working for two main reasons:
- For some reason in the Windows 10 operating system, i.e. software problem;
- For reasons of computer or laptop malfunctions, i.e. in this case the user is facing a hardware problem.
There are many methods that can be used to identify the true causes of keyboard problems. For example, one of the most accurate diagnostic methods is the analysis of the keyboard operation in the BIOS. BIOS is completely removed from Windows 10 and functions in the computer directly with the motherboard.
After checking how the input tool works in the BIOS, you can already make an unambiguous conclusion. For example, if the keys work perfectly in the BIOS, then the search for reasons immediately narrows by half and the problem is guaranteed to be in Windows 10, i.e. then you should analyze the causes in the software.
And the opposite situation, in the absence of any signs of the Claudia’s legality in the BIOS, leads to the conclusion that it is necessary to disassemble the PC to identify specific hardware problems.
We connect the keyboard on the screen
A temporary alternative to a non-working keyboard, its on-screen counterpart is successfully used. After all, the user will need to find drivers on the Internet, which will be extremely difficult to do without using a text input tool. Before starting the execution of this paragraph of the instruction, of course, you can try to connect a keyboard to the computer from another PC, which works normally, but often this method does not lead to success (however, if there is such an opportunity, then it is worth trying, because occasionally the breakdown of the periphery itself happens).
The algorithm for launching the on-screen keyboard in Windows 10 consists of the following steps:
- It is required to enter the “Parameters”;
- Then go to the section “Special features”;
- Then open the “Keyboard” tab;
- In the window that opens, in the “On-Screen Keyboard” item, move the position of the slider to the extreme right part;
- After completing these steps, the on-screen keyboard will open, which will be a full-fledged replacement for the keyboard, with the only difference that it works touch in Windows 10, but you can also enter perfectly with the mouse.
Analysis of the causes of computer or laptop problems, i.e. hardware problems
In the case of a desktop computer, it is necessary to check the keyboard connectors (plug and connectors).
Description of the problem
The problem when the laptop does not recognize the keyboard is as follows:
- When plugged in and launched, the screen works normally.
- The desire to print something is not crowned with success, since there is no feedback when pressing the keys.
- There is no light illumination of the operating keys: Scroll Lock, Num Lock, Caps Lock and others (depending on the type of keyboard).
Any manipulation does not give a positive result. Therefore, it is worthwhile to start looking for the root cause and possible fixing the problem, provided that the laptop has not previously been subjected to mechanical stress from the outside (for example, falling from a height).
A sudden failure in functioning is possible both on budget options and on progressive ones (with a modern design and many additional keys). The model does not affect this in any way, and the correction options are the same for everyone.
Causes and remedies
A sudden failure of a USB keyboard often occurs due to technical problems specifically with it, a wire, or software glitches. The first step is to check if there is a connection to the computer’s USB port to see if the cord has been pulled out. If it is in place, it is recommended to pull it out, wait a few seconds and insert it back.
Another option is a reboot, which often helps. When none of these tricks worked, they move sequentially through the list of probable causes of problems.
The reason is in the train
If the touchpad, the connected mouse and keyboard are functioning, suspicions fall on the loop. It sometimes comes off due to weak contact or after long-term transportation of the device. It is also likely to be incorrectly connected if the computer has recently been disassembled. The possibility of bending should not be ruled out.
The ribbon cable is located in the device case, so it will need to be opened. Beforehand, they carefully examine the keyboard around the perimeter, paying attention to the presence of latches on the side. It is enough to pry them off with a screwdriver to easily remove the cover. In order not to damage the train, you must act very carefully. If there are no skills in this matter, then it is better to contact the services of a service center.
After opening the wire, inspect the colored wires included in it. The point may be in one of them. bent or departed. It’s bad if all the wiring is damaged. then nothing can be fixed on your own.
Faulty USB port
A possible source of trouble is a defective USB input. To exclude or confirm this, connect the keypad to the spare input, if any. The reason for the failure of one of the ports is a sharp voltage drop, which negatively affects the motherboard. If this does not help, then they check the operability of the USB ports directly by connecting other devices. a printer, flash drive, smartphone, etc.
The laptop may not respond to a keyboard paired via USB 3.0 (blue output). Then it is recommended to try to connect to USB 2.0 (white).
Not having achieved a positive reaction to any of the maneuvers done, they conclude that the problem is precisely in the ports.
Introduced viruses and drivers for Bluetooth and USB can damage the keyboard and touchpad. It is easy to diagnose this if you try to enter the BIOS and check the functionality of the navigation keys. they work, therefore, the problem is in the Windows operating system. Switching to safe mode will help to confirm suspicions 100%, where they check the keyboard’s functionality.
If the keys are completely inactive, then connect the mobile keyboard and mouse. Then it will be possible to make any attempts to eliminate the malfunction on the laptop.
The first thing to do is reinstall the drivers through the device manager. To do this, click on the Windows 7 “Start” menu and select “Control Panel”.
In the upper right corner there is a column “View”, in which “Small icons” are displayed. Then the device manager is launched.
For Windows 8.1 and 10 systems, everything is much simpler: “Dispatcher” is already in the start menu.
They enter it and observe a pop-up window with a list of sections: select “Keyboards”. “HID Keyboard” and press the right mouse button. In the context menu, remove the driver device.
After confirmation, restart the computer. When the system is restarted, the drivers are installed automatically.
On some models, manufacturers provide their own drivers that come with USB keyboards. Then you need to download them yourself on the official website of the brand and use the installation disk (included with the keyboard) to run new drivers.
The laptop does not see the keyboard: causes and solutions
The situation when a laptop does not see the keyboard (native or connected via Bluetooth) happens no less often than on a stationary computer. The difference is that a regular keyboard is easy to disconnect and replace with a working one. With the built-in, such a technique is not possible. There are many reasons for such a failure in the PC, so we will consider the most common ones. At the same time, possible solutions to the problem are presented on their own, without the involvement of a specialist.
Disabled USB controller in BIOS
Due to the same power surge and failure of the motherboard, a spontaneous shutdown of the USB controller that supports the keyboard occurs. This does not manifest itself in any way until the computer enters pre-boot mode. To exclude such an option, go to the BIOS settings, where they look for the controller support section. the inscription “Keyboard Support” (Legasy USB Support) or “USB Support”.
Look what is written next: off. “Disabled”, on. “Enabled”.
Packaging and equipment
The keyboard comes in a striking package, styled in the well-recognized SteelSeries style. The box has a small window with which you can evaluate the work of the switches.
The dimensions of the SteelSeries Apex M800 turned out to be the most common for a gaming keyboard: 510×174 mm with a height of 40 mm. At the same time, an additional column with keys for macros adds a little more length to the Apex M800. Also noteworthy is the gap. due to its size, it should be perfect for shooters.
The SteelSeries Apex M800 does not have any more separate multimedia keys. All multimedia functions (control of backlight brightness, playback and sound volume) are combined with the F5-F12 keys. To activate them, you will also need to click on the button with the SteelSeries logo, which replaces Fn. Also, using a combination of this key and the Windows button, you can programmatically disable the latter. Gamers will especially appreciate this move.
There is nothing interesting on the front end of the keyboard, and on the left and right of the SteelSeries Apex M800 there are additional LED inserts that are backlit to match the keyboard. And on the back of the SteelSeries Apex M800, to the left and right of the cable, there is one USB 2.0 connector. They are useful for connecting flash drives.
The other side of the SteelSeries Apex M800 turned out to be no less interesting. Here, in the central part of the keyboard, there is a wide niche (if you turn the M800 upside down). This niche is ideal for routing various cables. For example, it will help in cases where the headphones will be connected to the monitor, which is located immediately in front of the keyboard. Now you can finally run the cable under the keyboard and it won’t get in the way.
The upper rubber feet are removable. They can be replaced in order to raise the keyboard above the table.
Now it’s time to get to the fun part. The keyboard uses SteelSeries QS1 switches. SteelSeries does not give any graphs of pressing force, but the box shows the main parameters of the buttons. So, the key travel of the SteelSeries QS1 is 3mm and the actuation depth is 1.5mm. If the depth of travel and pressing force of the SteelSeries QS1 turned out to be slightly less than that of conventional mechanics, then the pressing force of such keys has not changed and is 45 grams.
The backlight LED is located in the very center of the button, so the symbols on the cap are perfectly illuminated. Overall, the lighting on the SteelSeries Apex M800 is well done. The user can customize it within a wide range: you can use both the manufacturer’s presets and choose your own color for each key.
The SteelSeries QS1 keys are very pleasant to use. They had a smooth ride and a soft touch. With the SteelSeries Apex M800 keyboard, it will be convenient not only to play games, but also to type. there will be no noise.
As for the moment of triggering, this moment is felt weakly. But thanks to the small key travel, we did not notice any delays in shooters like CS: GO and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. There were no problems in fighting games either. we did not encounter the ghosting effect (the keyboard freezes when several keys are pressed at the same time). And the manufacturer himself declares its absence.
SteelSeries Apex M800 gaming keyboard review
Gaming keyboards haven’t changed much over the past few years. Cherry MX multicolored switches have captured the market so tightly that they are found in literally every gaming keyboard. By and large, these are not very different and differ from each other, although there are, of course, exceptions. The SteelSeries Apex M800 is another matter entirely. So let’s see how good the native buttons from the Steele will be.
- Switches: SteelSeries QS1
- Backlight: RGB, individual for each key
- Interfaces: 2xUSB 2.0 (for connecting to a PC) 2x USB 2.0 (for data transfer)
- Body materials: plastic
- Polling rate: 1000 Hz
- Cable: non-removable, in a fabric braid (1 meter)
- Dimensions: 510x174x40 mm
- Weight: 1390 grams (with cable)
- Compatibility: Windows, MacOS X
SteelSeries Engine Utility
To configure all SteelSeries devices, only one universal utility is used. SteelSeries Engine. It can be used to fully customize the Apex M800.
The Apex M800 allows you to reprogram any key. You can just change the letter, add a Windows action, hang up a macro, and so on. Customization options are limited only by the user’s imagination.
Macros are configured in the same utility. The form for recording them turned out to be simple and informative, and during the recording, the time of pressing the key is also taken into account.
Why the keyboard and mouse don’t work?
In addition to hardware breakdowns, such as contamination or oxidation of the key contacts, bending of the cable or burnout of the USB or PS / 2 port, sometimes there are software failures in the keyboard and mouse. Fortunately, in this case, you won’t have to buy a new manipulator, and our step-by-step instructions will help you fix the problem in just a couple of minutes.
Step 1. First, restart your computer and disconnect and then reconnect the problematic keyboard or mouse. It is better to plug the manipulator into another USB port (with the second PS / 2 connector, this will not work, since they are strictly divided into keyboard and mouse). If there are no free ports, you can temporarily disconnect something not critical, such as a printer. Often these simple actions are enough to solve the problem. If nothing has changed, go to the next paragraphs of our instructions.
Step 2. Now you need to make sure that the keyboard or mouse (or both at once) does not work precisely because of software, not hardware problems. The easiest way to do this is by connecting the manipulator to another computer or laptop.
If the second PC is not at hand or the keyboard is not removable (in the case of a laptop), restart the computer (holding the power button) and go to the BIOS menu. To do this, immediately after turning on the computer, press the Delete key (relevant for a desktop PC) or F2 (for a laptop). If you manage to get into the BIOS, then the keyboard is functioning and the problem lies in the operating system. The performance of the mouse in the BIOS can be checked only on the newest PCs and laptops. 2015, and even then not all.
Step 3. Next, you need to be able to somehow manage the Windows OS in order to diagnose and fix the problem. It was lucky if only the keyboard stopped working, or only the mouse. Instead of a physical keyboard, you can enable a virtual on-screen keyboard. Press the right mouse button (hereinafter. RMB) on the language bar in the lower right corner of the screen and check the box next to the item “Show touch keyboard button”. Then left-click (LMB) on the keyboard icon that appears next to it.
The functions of a non-working mouse can be performed using the keyboard, albeit with less convenience. To navigate the menu, use the arrow keys, Tab and Alt, and to confirm or cancel the action. Enter and Esc, respectively.
Step 4. Launch the configuration application called “Device Manager”. To do this, enter the appropriate phrase in the search bar of the Start menu. Find the Keyboards and Mice and Other Pointing Devices groups in the list of devices. Expand the contents of these groups. If they are empty or an exclamation or question mark icon is displayed next to the name of the keyboard or mouse, then you need to reinstall their drivers.
Specific drivers for the keyboard and mouse from the manufacturer, like video cards or network adapters, are not required. They use standard Windows drivers: HID Keyboard and HID Compliant Mouse. To reinstall them, just right-click on the name of the manipulator, select the “Properties” item, go to the “Driver” tab, click on the “Update” button and then “Automatic search for updated drivers”.
Sometimes, instead of the “Update” button, it can help to click “Roll back driver” to the previous unproblematic version. As a last resort, you can try to manually select the correct driver: “Update”, “Search for a driver on this computer”, “Select a driver from the list of already installed drivers”.
Step 5. In rare cases, it is not the mouse or keyboard driver that stops functioning correctly, but the USB controller driver, especially when it comes to USB 3.0 ports. In this case, the keyboard and mouse do not work at the same time. You can temporarily start them by switching from a USB 3.0 port (blue or red) to 2.0 (black or yellow), or using a USB-PS / 2 adapter (not relevant for laptops).
You can reinstall or roll back the USB 3.0 driver in the same way as the mouse and keyboard driver. The device you want is in the USB Controllers group and is most commonly referred to as the Intel (R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller. The exact name depends on the model of the motherboard PC or laptop and may contain the words AMD, Renesas, VIA or ASMedia.
Step 6. Another reason for the inoperability of the keyboard or mouse may be a failure in the operation of the configuration application from the manufacturer of the manipulator (Razer Synapse, SteelSeries Engine, A4Tech X7 Oscar, etc.). It is better to completely remove the problem software in the “Programs and Features” menu (run through the “Start” search bar; to remove it, double-click the LMB on the problematic application), and then install a newer or vice versa an old version devoid of flaws.
System setup on the fly. Squeezing the maximum performance out of the processor and video card
Esports is inextricably linked not only to the skill of the player, but also to the performance of gaming laptops. Any gamer would like to be able to achieve maximum system performance in one click without interrupting a multiplayer match. Quite naturally, being able to switch system profiles on the fly is much more convenient than getting into BIOS and various inconvenient utilities. This is exactly the task MSI Dragon Center is designed to handle, which takes all the fine tuning work on itself, allowing the gamer to focus on the gameplay.
RGB backlight. Not just luxury
Many gamers claim that RGB lighting makes the gameplay better and more varied. In order to improve the gaming experience, MSI has implemented certain lighting enhancements that have been applied to the GT76.
MSI Dragon Center
Perhaps one of the hallmarks of any MSI gaming laptop is the Dragon Center app. Information and system parameters are collected in a single simple and convenient interface. You no longer have to go into BIOS to change important settings, as well as manually set the frequencies and fan speed each time before starting the game. Dragon Center offers comprehensive control of all levels and nodes of a gaming laptop, allowing you to squeeze the maximum performance out of the available hardware. Let’s take a look at the various Dragon Center tabs and tools separately.
Individual RGB key illumination
and more MSI laptops are equipped with custom RGB backlit keys. In addition to improving the aesthetic component, this feature also gives gamers some tactical superiority. For example, the backlight can be configured separately for each game. in shooters, for example, only those keys that are really needed at the moment will light up (WASD, etc.). over, you can customize the backlight so that a specific key or area is lit when the game character runs out of ammo or health. There is even the ability to glow in time with the music!
Some clicks are very important
A comfortable, responsive keyboard not only allows you to type quickly and comfortably, but is also an essential component of any gaming laptop. The most important parameters for gamers are sensitivity, key travel depth and non-sticking. The ability to customize RGB lighting effects and the readability of the keys in the dark are also important parameters. MSI’s implementation with SteelSeries Engine 3 support takes into account all the important nuances, so we get, in fact, the best keyboard among gaming laptops.
MSI Mystic Light
MSI Mystic Light brings a level of customization to notebooks (again referring to GT76) that only desktop motherboards could boast. Paired with the SteelSeries Engine 3, Mystic Light offers many ways to customize your laptop. In GT76, the Mystic Light controls the illumination of several zones: the keyboard, the front of the case, side lights and the back of the case. In SteelSeries Engine 3, you can configure all the same areas, except for the back of the case.
To date, under this heading, we have examined the main aspects of gaming laptops, such as cooling, acoustics, display, etc. However, gamers pay attention not only to the system performance and its parameters. for this category of users, such features are also important that would allow them to somehow stand out from the crowd.
Many laptops have RGB lighting and other features that allow you to customize the system to your liking. For example, in the MSI GT76 Titan, the set of such functions and capabilities is as rich as possible, due to which the owner can fine-tune almost any parameters and nodes of the system.
In this article, we’ll show you how various modifications and enhancements help improve the gaming experience. Among other things, we will take a look at the implementation of technologies such as individual RGB key illumination, reassignable and additional function keys, and MSI system customization utilities and their capabilities. By the way, it’s not just about PC games. Gaming on Android is also very popular these days, so we will take a look at the MSI App Player, which allows you to run Android games on your computer using your keyboard and mouse.
