Decrypting Existing BIOS Password
Nbsp nbsp There is a lot of software, both paid and free, to decrypt a forgotten password stored in CMOS non-volatile memory. But, unfortunately, universal “burglars” no passwords exist. Even the professional versions, which cost decent money, are focused on use for specific motherboard models. Of the free software, CmosPwd 5.0 has very good capabilities (Download, (106 kb), password is admcomp.Ru by Christophe Grenier, the author of popular programs for recovering data and forgotten passwords.
Official site. Www.Cgsecurity.Org
Outdated version CmosPwd 4.8 (Download, (106 kb), password. admcomp.Ru
The program allows you to decrypt BIOS passwords from the following manufacturers:
- ACER / IBM BIOS
- AMI BIOS
- AMI WinBIOS 2.5
- Award 4.5x / 4.6x / 6.0
- Compaq (1992)
- Compaq (New version)
- IBM (PS / 2, Activa, Thinkpad)
- Packard bell
- Phoenix 1.00.09.AC0 (1994), a486 1.03, 1.04, 1.10 A03, 4.05 rev 1.02.943, 4.06 rev 1.13.1107
- Phoenix 4 release 6 (User)
- Gateway Solo. Phoenix 4.0 release 6
- Zenith AMI
Nbsp nbsp Programs can be executed in the environment of 32-bit OS NT / 2000 / XP / 2003. For their operation, you will need to install a driver that provides the application program with access to the I / O ports (ioperm.Sys):
– Register in the system with administrator rights.
– go to the directory. \ Cmospwd-4.8 \ windows and install the driver:
nbsp nbsp ioperm.Exe.I
– start the service (if it did not start when the previous point was executed):
nbsp nbsp net start ioperm
– now you can use cmospwd_win.Exe
nbsp nbsp To uninstall the driver Use:
nbsp nbsp ioperm.Exe.U
Nbsp nbsp DOS version does not require driver installation. Rewrite cmospwd to a floppy disk, boot from it and run cmospwd.Exe. The DOS and Windows variants use the same syntax and have the same password decryption capabilities.
The program will give you password options that you can use. Consider the following points:
– lowercase and uppercase characters are different.
– for AWARD BIOS, the numbers must be typed on the additional keyboard Numeric Keypad when NumLock is turned on.
If none of the passwords fit. Try resetting CMOS. Never do this for laptops. The consequences can be very unpleasant.
A hint on using the program can be obtained by:
cmospwd / k. Clear CMOS
cmospwd / d. Dump CMOS content
cmospwd / w mycmos.Bin. Write CMOS content to mycmos.Bin file
cmospwd / l mycmos.Bin. Load CMOS content from mycmos.Bin file
cmospwd / m1101. Search for a password selectively (1 check is performed)
BIOS manufacturer password guessing
Some BIOS manufacturers anticipate the possibility of entering a special “engineering” a password that allows full access to BIOS Setup. Basically, this applies to computers manufactured in 2004-2005.
Manufacturer’s passwords for AWARD BIOS versions:
Enter the password in accordance with the letter case.
Manufacturer’s passwords for AMI BIOS:
AMI_SW. NOT universal but
set when clearing CMOS / SETUP
Ctrlaltdelins (keep on loading, sometimes just INS)
Secondary BIOS vendor passwords:
Reset BIOS password.
Nbsp nbsp If the password cannot be found, try resetting it. Most motherboards have a dedicated switch, usually labeled “Clear CMOS”, allows you to reset the contents of non-volatile memory. If there is such a switch or it is impossible to open the computer case, you can reset the password using software tools, for example, the killcmos.com program Download or with the introduction of the / k key the above-mentioned cmospwd.Exe
The principle of password reset is based on writing some information to the CMOS cells without changing the checksum. The Power On Self Test (POST) checks the checksum of the CMOS content and, in case of an error, resets the default settings (to Default). This also resets the password.
In the absence of a special program for clearing CMOS, you can use any program that allows you to write to the I / O ports. Writing to port 70H sets the CMOS cell address, and writing to port 71H. Its contents. The ideal would be to write directly to the cell where the checksum is stored. Once upon a time (it seems before the advent of PS / 2) the checksum was stored in cells 2Eh and 2Fh, and changing their contents unambiguously led to a CMOS reset.
The easiest way is to boot into DOS / Win9x, where there is a standard debug.Exe debugger. Allows to work directly with I / O ports. Run debug and enter the commands:
-o 70 2E nbsp nbsp. Write to port 70 addresses of cell 2E
-o 71 0 nbsp nbsp. Write value to port 71 “0”
-q nbsp nbsp nbsp nbsp. Finish working with the debugger
However, now this is not always the case, the area of controlled content and addresses of checksum cells do not have standard values, so CMOS clearing programs paint either all of the nonvolatile memory or most of it. If you are using the debug. It makes sense to change the contents of cells 30h-33h, 40h, 70h. This usually works.
And the last thing. Since such programs work directly with I / O ports, they must be launched in pure DOS, and not in the Windows NT / 2000 / XP DOS session window, unless the possibility of working through a special driver is provided, as in cmospwd_win.Exe
BIOS password recovery (reset)
Due to the fact that many programs used to recover passwords have specific differences, thanks to which they can be falsely identified by some antiviruses as malicious software (software), and this resource is periodically included in the lists of malicious sites, I have to close all archived files available through download links on pages related to methods for recovering forgotten passwords. Use the domain name. admcomp.Ru as a password for the archive.
Reset passwords on Toshiba laptops
Nbsp nbsp Unlike most ordinary computers, laptops, with rare exceptions, store passwords not in CMOS, but in programmable ROM (EEPROM), so all the above methods of resetting passwords will not work. In most cases, to decode or reset passwords, you will need special equipment and a certain technique, depending on the specific model. With some degree of probability, password guessing or decoding with the help of Special programs may work.
Nbsp nbsp To reset the password on older Toshiba notebooks, use the supplied key diskette. You can create it yourself using a small program keydisk.Exe Download 4Kb. If such a floppy disk is found in the drive during the boot process. Password is reset.
Nbsp nbsp If the key disk did NOT help, you can try a special plug for the parallel port connector (Toshiba Parallel loopback). With this plug in, most Toshiba notebooks will reset the password the first time they are turned on. The plug can be easily made by yourself by connecting the following pins of the DB25 connector together:
1-5-10, 2-11, 3-17, 4-12, 6-16, 7-13, 8-14, 9-15, 18-25 nbsp nbsp There are other insecure password reset methods. Like desoldering and reprogramming the ROM or powering off a microcircuit with a stored password. However, it is best to contact the technical support of the laptop manufacturer. For example, for Toshiba notebooks, there is a way to remove the password with the implementation of the Response Code method. The reset procedure is as follows:
– after the prompt for entering the password, certain key combinations are pressed (Usually. Press and release Ctrl, Tab, Ctrl, Enter in sequence), after which the following message will appear on the screen:
PC Serial No. = XXXXXXXXX
Challenge Code = XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX
Response Code =
Valid Password Entered. System is now starting up.
Nbsp nbsp Enter BIOS again:
Press ‘P’ to go to the password field. Highlighted “Registered”.
2. Press the space bar. Value “Password = Registered” will change to “Password =”.
3. Press Enter. A Message will appear- “New Password =”.
4. Presses Enter. A Message will appear- “Verify Password =”.
5. Presses Enter. A Message will appear- “Password = Not Registered”.
6. Presses End. A Message will appear- “Are You Sure?”.
7. Presses Y.
Nbsp nbsp Everything, password reset.
Nbsp nbsp On some laptops it is possible to reset the password by pressing a certain key combination immediately after switching on. On some Acer models, press or.
For DELL laptops, it is possible to reset the password using the master password, which is generated by the Service Tag number (written on the laptop case). Program for generating master password (latitude.Zip Download (6 kb, password to the archive. admcomp.Ru)
Some antivirus programs detect latitude.Exe as a hacktool. To use run:
The program uses 5 characters from the Service Tag.
Nowadays it is more and more difficult to crack a password on a laptop. There is not a single methodology, and there is no universal software either, since each equipment manufacturer uses its own, unique, even for SEPARATE product lines, approach to ways to recover forgotten passwords. The user is left with a choice. Either contact an Authorized Service Center, or look for a specific password reset method for your laptop on specialized Internet resources, for example:
Links to English-language resources for resetting passwords on laptops:

Generators of engineering passwords for laptops with BIOS from Phoenix There are two programs in the archive. BIOS_PW.EXE for BIOS and HDD_PW.EXE for hard drive. It’s easy to use: in the DOS window, enter the name of the program, separated by a space. An error code of five digits, which the laptop gives out when entering the password incorrectly three times, separated by a space. Number 0 and press the Enter key. The program will generate several passwords. One of them might come up with BIOS. It may take quite a long time to brute force a password.

Using the Windows GUI
If, upon logging into the system, it was found that the entered password is Inappropriate, this does not always mean that the user has forgotten it. The first thing to do is see which language is used by default on your laptop. For example, if the key was set in English, and the standard language is Russian, then you need to change it by pressing AltShift (CtrlShift) on the keyboard or Move the cursor over the language bar icon and Select the required layout.
If the language is okay, check to see if the CapsLock key was pressed, as the case is case-sensitive when entering the password. Also, it will not be superfluous to be named by the question mark located near the entry date. Usually, when installing a new key, users make themselves a hint to find out what the password is on the laptop (for example, the mother’s maiden name).
If you do NOT find any layout or case problems, you can try resetting or changing your password in the User Accounts menu. This method allows you to unblock access only to the guest account, that is, an entry with Administrator rights will NOT work.
To reset your guest account password, you need to do the following:
- Log in as an Administrator.
- In the Run window (located in the Start menu or invoked by the WinR keyboard shortcut) enter cmd.
- Hit the command timeline, register control userpasswords2. This will allow you to go to the “User Accounts” tab.
- In the “Users” window, select the account you want to unblock and uncheck the existing checkbox. Then click Ok.
- In the window that appears, if required, set a new password or leave the Corresponding fields blank.
Nothing else needs to be done. Now, when you log in from a guest account, you will not need to enter the key.
How to log into a laptop without a password
If the owner of the PC has forgotten the password, it is not worth taking rash steps, because the Windows developers foresaw this situation and equipped the operating system with special software that allows you to quickly reset the existing key and, if necessary, change it to a new one. To unblock access to a laptop, you can use:
- OS graphical interface;
- Safe mode;
- Command line;
- Windows boot disk.
Restoring access to laptop through command term
You can also bypass laptop protection through a command timeline. This requires:
- Turn on PC and enter Safe Mode with command line support.
- In the command interpreter, enter net user MyLogin NewPassword, where MyLogin is the name of your account (you can see it when you boot the laptop), and NewPassword is your new input key.
- Restart the laptop and enter the value just set in the password entry column.
Reset password through safe mode
This method allows you to restore not only the guest account, but also the Administrator account. You need to do the following:
- Go to Safe Mode. To do this, while starting the laptop, you must hold F8. When the download methods appear, select the Appropriate Mode. The operating system will be logged in from the built-in Administrator account, for which there is no password by default. It can be set manually, but this is not recommended.
- You will see a message stating that “Safe Mode” is designed to diagnose the OS. It loads without drivers, so some devices may not work correctly. We agree with this.
- Got into the Windows graphical shell, go to “User Accounts”. This tab is located in the “Control Panel”.
- Select an account, the password from which the user has forgotten.
- If you need to change the input key, in the window that appears, click “Change”. To reset the password, select “Delete”.
Using a boot disk
Another OS built-in password reset tool that a user has forgotten is to use a Windows boot disk. In this case, only the assembly of the operating system that is installed on the problem laptop is suitable.
To crack a lost password, you need to do the following:
- Enter the BIOS and in the Boot section opposite 1st Boot Device, install the CD / DVD. Save changes and exit BIOS.
- Insert the Windows disc into the drive and restart the laptop.
- In the installation window, click “Restore System”.
- To bypass the login key, in the boot method selection window, click Command Prompt and then type regedit.
- I got into the registry editor, select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and then in the “File” tab, activate “Load hive”.
- Next, open the SAM file and go to the section, the path to which is indicated in the image.
- Double-click LMB on the value F. To reset the input password, in the opened table on line 38, change 11 to 10 and click Ok. If you change a different value, you can disable the system, so there is no need to experiment.
- Having made the Required changes, go to the “File” menu, click “Unload Hive”, and then agree to this operation by clicking “Yes”.
After that, restart your laptop and remove the bootable disc from the DVD drive. If everything is done correctly, you will not need to enter a password during OS boot, that is, you managed to reset it.
It is impossible to find out the password set on the laptop on your own. However, it can be bypassed and not difficult to do. Therefore, if you forgot the login key, use one of the recovery tools.
How to Easily Reset BIOS Password on Laptop
There are many options for protecting data on a computer or laptop. Can encrypt files and folders. Partitions and disks. Password protect your computer with an account and lock your laptop with BIOS password. Most users prefer to add a strong password to their user accounts to prevent others from gaining access to data. The windows login password is a good idea, but it can’t prevent you from loading into the login screen and using workarounds, special programs to find out the password. It’s even more important if someone manages to boot from a Linux Live CD or Windows boot disk and instantly copy all the data to an external drive.
Since all of the above passwords can be reset and learned by workarounds, some users prefer to use the BIOS password. The BIOS password is more secure than the user account password, as no one can boot from the boot disk or boot the Windows login without entering the correct BIOS password.
Again, the BIOS password can be reset by removing the motherboard CMOS battery in your computer, but then it is NOT an easy job, especially on HP notebooks and tablets, dell, acer, asus, lenovo, samsung, toshiba. Therefore, we will analyze how to find out or reset the BIOS password on laptops and tablets if you have forgotten it and do not remember. Wondering how it works? A unique master password is set in the BIOS from the OEM. Using this master password, you can reset the password and gain access to the BIOS.
Reset BIOS password
This method should work on most modern laptops and computers. I tried on an Acer laptop and everything worked fine.
- Power on laptop, computer and enter BIOS password several times until you are locked.
- Now you should immediately see the technical code or number, as in the picture below, or select Enter Unlock Password (enter the password to unlock). In the second BIOS versions, the code can be designated by the second (System Disbled Service Tag [84dn8c9]), but the essence of this does not change.
- Write down all codes on a piece of paper or on your mobile phone.
- On your smartphone or other laptop Visit the BIOS passwords website, enter the code you saw on the BIOS screen, and then click the Get password button. Knowing the manufacturer of the laptop, write down the password, if there are several of them, then write down several one by one.
- Now go again to enter the password in the BIOS and enter the code that you wrote down from the site. Then you can go to the BIOS settings and remove or change the password by entering the same code.
Recently I password-protected an old laptop from 2005. BenQ brand, which is very difficult to find on the Internet and information about it, especially in the BIOS. I used one way that helped me.
You need to run the command expiration date, but how to do it if the password is worth? What do you need?
- If you can boot to your desktop, then run Command Timeline as administrator.
- You can create a Windows installation USB stick and run CMD.
- You can install FreeDOS on the flash drive itself.
We use the debug command, which corrupts some of the protected checksum bytes of the CMOS RAM area. This is a risky way, but there was no way out and I didn’t mind the laptop, but everything went well. On the next boot, CMOS usually resets its default settings. Do not forget to change the time, date and hour if they fly off.
Enter the command, where o is a letter.
- O 70 2E
- O 71 FF
How to remove BIOS password using a jumper
Note that in addition to resetting the BIOS password using a battery on the motherboard, there is another method. It consists in switching the jumpers, again on the motherboard. Here are the instructions for use:
- Power off the computer completely, unplug the network cable.
- A dedicated Clear CMOS switch is located near the CMOS memory battery.
- Remove the jumper (jumper) and stopped in position 2.
- Turn on the computer and make sure all BIOS settings and password are NOT prompted anymore.
If you cannot find the jumper on the board, then take a closer look at the inscription next to the elements. The jumper is usually designated as follows: CLR_CMOS, PWD, CLEAR CMOS, PASSWORD, CLR, CLEARPWD, JCMOS1, CLEAR RTC, PASSWD, PSWD and similar.
There is also a reset button that you just need to press. But more often than not she is absent.
How to reset BIOS password of laptop and computer
Recently, many users are thinking about the security of their data on a computer. In this case, they set passwords only for the system itself when it is turned on, but also for folders, encrypt disks and enable protection even in the BIOS.
Thus, the BIOS allows you to get full access to your hardware and configure the parameters as you like. The meaning of setting a password, of course, is available, but what if you forgot it?
Consequences of a Lost BIOS Password
For a second, let’s imagine that you have forgotten exactly the password that you set yourself. Backup codes are easy to find on the Internet, so are they now talking.
When the computer boots up, a password field appears immediately. You will NOT be able to do anything, not even enter the BIOS or Boot Menu. This means that it will not boot from a bootable USB flash drive or disk.
Fortunately, there are hardware methods on how to remove the password from the BIOS.
How to reset BIOS password on Acer laptop or computer
If you have an Acer laptop and have access to the operating system, you can easily remove the BIOS password using the built-in Acer eSettings Management utility. If you have it, great, and if not, download it from the official Acer Empowering website.
- Launch the Acer eSettings Management tool from the Start Menu or Desktop. The program is usually located along the path “Start. All Programs. Empowerment Technology. Manage Acer eSettings”.
- Find the item “Passwords BIOS”.
- Click on the “Remove password” item to restore access to the BIOS. You can also create it.
How to reset BIOS password on laptop and computer
Today we’ll talk about how to reset the BIOS password on the motherboard of a laptop or computer. If you suddenly forgot your password, then logging in will be problematic.
In this case, you might think that the motherboard needs to be replaced, but this is not the case. Developers have long deliberately introduced ways that can quickly and easily disable the password in the BIOS. Absolutely everyone can find themselves in such a situation, for example, if you set the password yourself, there is a backup code, or protection was already enabled when buying a computer from your hands.

- What happens if you do not remember the BIOS password
Using the PC CMOS Cleaner Utility
There is more than one utility to clear the BIOS password. Now I will explain how to use the PC CMOS Cleaner tool, which can easily reset the CMOS BIOS password, restore the settings to the factory state.
The brand of the motherboard or laptop is not at all important, since the program supports almost all BIOS versions. There is also support for 32x and 64x processors.
How to remove password from BIOS programmatically
There is a special utility. CMOSPWD, which will help you reset your password from under Windows. This will work, of course, if you have access to the system, you remember the BIOS password, but you don’t want to go there to erase it. Or you DO NOT know how.
Download the utility from here. Open and then do this: hold down the SHIFT key, right-click, then select the “Open command window” option.
The command line will start, where you can see what commands are available in this utility. To do this, enter the following. cmospwd_win.Exe /?
To reset the BIOS password, enter the following command:
To confirm the clear CMOS action, enter the number 1 and press Enter.
The program can be easily used Not only in Windows, but also from a bootable DOS flash drive. Initially, it needs to be placed in the image.
Reset BIOS password using CMOS battery
Every motherboard has a special chip that stores all the input / output system (BIOS) settings. To prevent these settings from being reset when the computer is turned off, they are constantly powered by a Complimentary Matal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) battery. This method is called clearing CMOS memory.
It follows from this that to reset all BIOS settings, including the password, you simply need to remove the battery from the motherboard. If this does NOT cause difficulties on a desktop computer, then in the case of laptops, you need to completely disassemble them and take out the motherboard.
As a rule, for a successful BIOS reset to occur, you need to wait about a day. You can try putting the battery back in 15 minutes, it worked for me. But it can work without waiting.
Using debug.Exe tool on Windows
When using Windows XP, you can use a special utility. This debugger can be found at the following path. WINDOWS \ system32 \ debug.Exe. You can copy this address and launch the debugger using the Run window, which opens with WinR.
Also, the run window is located along the path: Start. Execute.
To reset the BIOS password, you need to enter commands for different versions of I / O systems:
- -o 70 10
- -o 71 0
- -o 70 11
- -o 71 0
- -o 70 17
- -o 71 17
- -o 70 ff
- -o 71 17
After each entered line, you must press Enter. Also, the designation of THESE codes is as follows:
- Q. exit;
- The first number is the port;
- The second number is the number of bytes.
Unlock BIOS on PC
If you reset the password and reset the I / O system settings, you need to equip a modern motherboard on a desktop computer, then for this there is a special button on it “Clear CMOS”, however, it is not found in all models. If this is your case, then just Turn off your computer from the network, open the system unit and click on this button. BIOS settings will be completely reset.
If the buttons described above are on the motherboard of your PC, you will have to look for contacts with a jumper specially designed for resetting BIOS settings on it. They are easy to find, they are labeled CMOS. Disconnect the PC from the network and block the second pair of contacts with a jumper (jumper). Then, after about 10-15 seconds, return the jumper back to the first pair of contacts.
If you could not find this jumper, then you can reset the settings by pulling out the battery for 2-3 minutes.
Resetting BIOS password on computers and laptops
There are several ways to reset your password and BIOS settings if you’ve forgotten it. The first hardware method is suitable for desktops, the second. software will help reset the BIOS password on laptops. Let’s consider both options in more detail.
The situations are different. It so happens that your friend or acquaintance decided to change the configuration of his computer. I asked you to help him in this matter. You come to him, and he turns out, and does not remember the previously set password for entering the BIOS. Or you yourself, when, having taken up the protection of your PC, set a password on the input-output system, and now you cannot remember it.
In such situations, only resetting the BIOS password can help. At the same time, this can be done in two ways: reset the BIOS settings using a special CMOS jumper on the motherboard (for this, the PC must be completely de-energized); use the forgotten DOS commands through the command line interface.
Reset BIOS password on laptop
The three ways to reset your password described above are only suitable for desktop PCs, but what if you use a laptop? After all, there may be no jumpers on its motherboard? In this case, you need to find the documentation for your laptop and study it thoroughly in order to make sure that the jumpers and buttons on the mat. The board is available. Suddenly it turns out that there is?
In the event that the manufacturer does not provide jumpers on the motherboard, then you will have to use the software method to reset the BIOS password on a laptop. To do this, you need a DOS boot disk or a Windows installation disk with command line boot capability. In addition, if you can log into Windows with an administrator account, then you will not need boot disks.
So. Before us is the command line. We enter the debug.Exe command in it and click “Enter”. Then, sequentially enter the commands:
That’s practically all. After the PC restarts, a message will appear on the monitor screen that an error has occurred in the CMOS. And simultaneously with this error, you will be prompted to check or perform BIOS settings. BIOS settings are cleared and you can continue, depending on what you need: restore PC settings or change them.
Method 2. Emergency button
Most motherboards have special connectors for clearing CMOS memory, which are usually located in the immediate vicinity of the battery (you can find out the location of such a connector from the motherboard diagram given in the instructions for it or on the manufacturer’s website). To clear the CMOS memory, you need to close these connectors, then turn on the PC and re-set the BIOS settings.
If you happen to be lucky, who often encounters rare situations, or you are simply not looking for easy ways, then there is another way for you (Described in the book goldenshara.com/viewtopic.php?T=7802):
How to bypass BIOS passwords
Despite the fact that the BIOS is a powerful security tool, there are ways to bypass the password set in it.
Sometimes curious or seeking to protect their data as much as possible, users put passwords on everything they can, but they often forget these passwords. Forgotten BIOS password is hard to bear (system boot password), Often this can lead to the purchase of a new motherboard, but this can be avoided by taking advantage of the weaknesses of the architecture of building a computer and deliberately left by the developers “back doors”.
I believe that all (or almost all) inhabitants of Habrahabr know that the BIOS password (as well as other basic system settings) is stored in the CMOS (Complimentary Matal-Oxide-Semiconductor) memory, which requires constant recharge battery installed on the motherboard.
Hence, one of the ways to bypass the password follows, or rather, reset it along with all the settings stored in the BIOS:
Method 3. Engineering password
It consists in entering the engineering password of this motherboard instead of the forgotten BIOS password:
However, it should be remembered that these passwords work only on BIOS version 4.55G and below (class of motherboards in i845P chipset).
Method 1. Chubais method
Since CMOS requires constant recharge to save data, it follows from this that we have absorbed such recharge (battery) for some time (about 24 hours), we will achieve BIOS cleaning. After that, you need to reinsert the battery in the right place and when you start the computer, specify the necessary parameters again, such as the time, the new password (if it is really so necessary) and other settings you need.
The method is effective, but long, and time, as you know, is a very valuable resource and users, just like an IT specialist does not always have it. These features make this method not very practical and rather an extreme means than real practice. In addition, the battery on some motherboard models can be extremely difficult to remove without using additional tools, so it makes sense to resort to the method described in the instructions for the motherboard:
Method 4. Remember the old days
Another way to reset your password is to use the DOS environment. To do this, you need to boot into the DOS environment (pure DOS, not emulated from under Windows) and enter the following commands:
AWARD and AMI BIOS:
-O 70 17
-O 71 17
-O 70 FF
-O 71 FF
Windows password reset flash drives
If you needed a bootable (although optional) USB flash drive to reset your Windows 7, 8 or Windows 10 password, in this tutorial you will find 2 ways to make such a drive and information on how to use it (as well as some limitations inherent in each of them). Separate guide: Reset Windows 10 password (using a simple bootable OS stick).
I also note that I have described the third option. an installation flash drive or disk with the Windows distribution kit can also be used to reset the password on an already installed system, which I wrote about in the article A simple way to reset Windows password (should be suitable for all recent OS versions, since Windows 7).
Official way to make USB flash drive to reset password
The first way to create a USB drive, which can be used if you have forgotten the password for logging into Windows, is provided by the built-in tools of the operating system, but has significant limitations, which make it rarely used.
First of all, it will work only if you can log into Windows right now, and create a USB flash drive for the future, if you suddenly need to reset a forgotten password (if this is not about you, you can immediately go to the next option). The second limitation is that it is only suitable for resetting the password of a local account (i.e. if you use a Microsoft account in Windows 8 or Windows 10, this method will not work).
The very procedure for creating a USB flash drive is as follows (works the same in Windows 7, 8, 10):
- Go to the Windows Control Panel (at the top right, select “Icons”, not categories), select “User Accounts”.
- Click on “Create a password reset disk” in the list on the left. If you do not have a local account, then there will be no such item.
- Follow the instructions of the Forgotten Password Wizard (very simple, literally three steps).
As a result, the userkey.Psw file will be written to your USB drive, containing the information required for reset (and this file, if desired, can be transferred to any other USB flash drive, everything will work).
To use a USB flash drive, connect it to your computer and enter the wrong password when logging in. If this is a local Windows account, then you will see that a reset item appears below the input field. Click on it and follow the instructions of the wizard.
Online NT Password Registry Editor. Powerful Password Reset Tool for Windows and
I first successfully used the Online NT Password Registry Editor utility about 10 years ago and since then it has NOT lost its relevance, Do not forget to update regularly.
This free program can be placed on a bootable USB flash drive or disk and used to reset the password of a local account (and not only) Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and Windows 10 (as well as previous versions of OS from Microsoft). If you have one of the latest versions and at the same time, you are using NOT a local, but an online Microsoft account to log in, using the Online NT Password Registry Editor you can still get access to the computer by a workaround (I will also show you).
Warning: Resetting the password on systems that use EFS file encryption will render these files unreadable.
And now a guide on creating a bootable USB flash drive for password reset and instructions on how to use it.
- Go to the official download page for ISO image and bootable USB flash drive Online NT Password Registry Editor http://pogostick.Net/
Pnh / ntpasswd / bootdisk.html, scroll to the middle and download the latest release for USB (there is also an ISO for burning to disk).
Note: if for some reason this method did not work, then you can download the ISO image of this utility and write it to a USB flash drive using WinSetupFromUSB (the SysLinux bootloader is used).
So, the USB drive is ready, Connect it to the computer, where you need to reset the password, or Get access to the system in the second way (if using a Microsoft account), put the boot from the USB flash drive in the BIOS and proceed with the active steps.
After loading, on the first screen you will be prompted to select options (in most cases, you can simply press Enter without selecting anything. If in this case problems arise, then Use one of the options by entering the specified parameters, for example, boot irqpoll (after that. hitting Enter) if IRQ errors occur.
The second screen will show a list of partitions in which the installed Windows were found. You need to indicate the number of this section (there are other options, the details of which I will not go into here, the one who uses them knows why without me. And ordinary users will NOT need them).
After the program makes sure that the necessary registry files are available in the selected Windows and the ability to write operations to the hard disk, you will be offered several options, of which we are interested in Password reset, which we select by entering 1 (one).
Next, select again 1. Edit user data and passwords (editing user data and passwords).
The fun begins on the next screen. You will see a table of users, whether they are administrators, and whether these accounts are locked out or involved. On the left side of the list are the RIDs of each user. Select the one you need by entering the appropriate number and pressing Enter.
The next step allows us to choose several actions when entering the corresponding number:
- Reset the password of the selected user
- Unblock and enable the user (This is exactly what allows on Windows 8 and 10 with a Microsoft account to get access to the computer. just select the hidden Administrator account at the previous stage and enable it using this item).
- Make the selected user an administrator.
If you do NOT select anything, then pressing Enter will return you to the user selection. So, to reset Windows password, select 1 and press Enter.
You will see information that the password has been reset and again the same menu that you saw in the previous step. To exit, press Enter, on the next choice. q, and, finally, to save the changes made, enter y at the request.
This completes resetting the Windows password using the Online NT Password Registry Editor bootable flash drive, you can remove it from the computer and press CtrlAltDel to reboot (and put the boot from the hard drive in the BIOS).
