Another good way to get complete information about your computer’s hardware is to use the AIDA64 program (which replaced the previously popular Everest). With this program, you can not only learn about your video card, but also about many other hardware characteristics of your computer and laptop. Despite the fact that AIDA64 is worthy of a separate review, here we will talk about it only in the context of this manual. You can download AIDA64 for free on the developer’s website http://www.aida64.com.

The program, in general, is paid, but 30 days (albeit with some restrictions) works great and in order to determine the video card, a trial version will be enough.

After starting, open the “Computer” section, then. “Summary information”, and find the item “Display” in the list. There you can see the model of your video card.

Additional ways to find out which video card using Windows

In addition to the methods already described, in Windows 10, 8 and Windows 7 there are additional system tools that allow you to get information about the model and manufacturer of the video card, which can be useful in some cases (for example, if access to the device manager is blocked by the administrator).

How to find out your graphics card model if your computer or laptop won’t turn on

One of the possible options is the need to determine which video card is on a computer or laptop that does not show signs of life. In this situation, all that can be done (except for the option of installing a video card in another computer) is to study the markings or, in the case of an integrated video adapter, to study the processor specifications.

Desktop PC graphics cards are usually labeled on the “flat” side of the sticker to identify the chip used on it. If there is no clear marking, as in the photo below, then there may also be a manufacturer’s model identifier, which can be entered in a search on the Internet and, most likely, the first results will contain information about what kind of video card it is.

To find out which video card is installed in your laptop, provided that it does not turn on, the easiest way is to search for the specifications of your laptop model on the Internet, they should contain such information.

If we are talking about identifying a laptop video card by marking, it is more difficult: it can only be viewed on the graphics chip, and in order to get to it, you will need to remove the cooling system and remove the thermal paste (which I do not recommend for someone who is not sure that knows how to do it). On the chip, you will see a marking something like the photo.

Note: the same markings are found on the chips of desktop video cards, and you will also have to “get to” them by removing the cooling system.

For integrated graphics (integrated video card), everything is easier. just search the Internet for the specifications of your processor model of your computer or laptop, the information, among other things, will include information about the integrated graphics used (see screenshot below).

Using the System Information Tool

Another Windows utility that allows you to get information about the video card is “System Information”. It starts in a similar way: press the WinR keys and enter msinfo32.

In the system information window, go to the “Components”. “Display” section, where in the “Name” field you will see which video adapter is used in your system.

Note: msinfo32 incorrectly displays the memory of the video card if it is more than 2 GB. This is a Microsoft confirmed issue.

Viewing Graphics Card Information in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag)

All modern versions of Windows have one or another version of DirectX components designed to work with graphics and sound in programs and games.

These components include a diagnostic tool (dxdiag.exe) that allows you to find out which video card is on your computer or laptop. To use the tool, follow these simple steps:

  • Press the WinR keys on your keyboard and type dxdiag into the Run window.
  • After downloading the diagnostic tool, go to the “Display” tab.

The specified tab will indicate the model of the video card (or, more precisely, the graphics chip used on it), information about the drivers and video memory (in my case, for some reason, it is displayed incorrectly). How to determine which video card is currently running on a laptop?

Good afternoon, readers of my blog! Laptops today have one or two video cards. The first option is found in inexpensive devices, the second is a powerful technique for gaming and serious work. Sometimes the user has no idea how to find out which video card is currently running on a laptop. It will seem to many that this is superfluous information. However, there are times when a powerful device has a hard time playing games. The reason may well lie in the discrete graphics that did not start.

System utilities

It is worth noting that by default on a new laptop, the integrated graphics work in idle mode. It makes no sense to check, since this fact is one hundred percent. But how to see if the system switches to powerful graphics is really an interesting question. In fact, it is difficult to achieve an unambiguous understanding. The problem is that a removable video card turns on under high loads, however, it is impossible to find out such information in the game, which means that it needs to be minimized, but then the system will again be rebuilt to the operation of the built-in chip.

If for some reason the user does not want to install separate software, then he can minimize the game and simply enter the display settings through the “Screen Resolution”. Next, select “Additional parameters”, which displays all the information about the involved schedule. I already said above that there is a chance that the system will return to its original version, but in fact, the system will use a more powerful graphics chip as long as the game continues to work.

Another option that will let you know the details about the graphics chip is as follows:

  • During the game, go to the desktop.
  • In the “Start” menu through the search, run the Dxdiag utility.
  • In the program that opens, you just need to select the “Screen” tab.

Third party utilities

Many laptop and hardware manufacturers prefer to equip their devices with proprietary software, which should make life easier for users. These properties are possessed by notebooks from HP, Lenovo and other well-known companies. With the help of such software, you can not only more flexibly configure the device system, but also perform system recovery. However, now we are not talking about laptop manufacturers, but about brands that supply video cards, namely GeForce and AMD Radeon cards. Both companies supply software with chips, if it is not installed on a laptop by default, then it can be downloaded from the official website. In these programs, you can get information of interest and fine-tune the operation of the system.

A very useful and simple program is NvOptimusTesTViewer. It takes up very little space and after launching it opens a small window in which you need to check the box “Show applications rendered”. After activating the button, a list of programs and games that run with discrete graphics will appear in the window.

In order to find out if the radeon card works, you should use another software. This includes numerous programs for scanning equipment and measuring temperatures while the device is operating. One of the most convenient utilities is GPU-Z. To use it, it is enough to turn on the utility, then start the game, and then minimize. Open the program window on the Sensors tab. At the very bottom, you can select the desired sensor and see information about it at a particular moment. how loaded it is, how it warmed up and other useful things. The advantage of this software is free distribution, low load on the system and ease of use, compatible with any equipment and any system.

Before talking about how to determine which video card a laptop uses, you should understand how the adapters differ. All graphics cards are divided into two types. discrete and integrated. The second option is found in any modern laptop. These are the graphics that come with the processor. The discrete chip is present in expensive devices.
