How to turn on sound on Lenovo laptop

Turning sound on and off

You can mute the sound using the keyboard combination of two buttons. Fn and one of the twelve function keys F1-F12 with an icon in the form of a crossed-out speaker. Fn expands the capabilities of the keyboard, it is located in the bottom row on the left, between “Ctrl” and “Windows”.

On a number of Samsung models, there are two such buttons: one is in the usual place, and the other is near the arrow keys to the right of the main unit. The function buttons are in the top row, between “Escape” and “Pause / Break”. To activate the required action, hold Fn with one finger, then with the other finger of the same or second hand (if the key is at the end of the upper row) press the desired button once.

It is worth noting that on laptops of different brands and individual models, different keys are responsible for this action. Below are a few examples (in all cases in conjunction with Fn):

  • Asus. Most models use the F10 key.
  • Acer. F8.
  • Dell. F1.
  • Lenovo. F1.
  • Sony Vaio. F2.
  • HP. F8.
  • Samsung. F6.
  • Toshiba. Fn Esc.
  • MSI. F9.
  • Chromebook. F8.

For individual lines and models, other combinations are possible, which can be easily recognized by the labeling of the keys or from the instructions for the laptop (for example, if the images on the buttons have erased from long use).

turn, sound, lenovo, laptop

You can turn on sound on a laptop using the keyboard using the same keyboard shortcuts. When pressed again, the sound reappears and the volume remains the same as it was before it was turned off. A common reason for no sound on a mobile PC is accidentally pressing a combination that turns off the speakers.

Sometimes users forget that they themselves performed this action some time ago. Therefore, if, when playing a file in the player, the time starts counting, although the speakers or headphones do not emit a sound, you should first press the buttons mentioned above.

Turning on the sound in the laptop. adjusting the volume on the keyboard

The operating system and programs for playing multimedia files are equipped with volume controls, the interface of which is understandable even for a beginner, but in some cases changing the sound on the laptop keyboard will be faster and more efficient. The user does not have to grab the mouse and hover the cursor over the icon in the tray or application window, as well as exit full-screen mode during the game.

There is also no need to reach for the rotary control on the external speaker, which is not always convenient, especially when the speakers are mounted to the wall. over, the sound from the keyboard can be turned off instantly. and this is especially important. when you need to quickly remove background noise, for example, during a phone call or at night. Knowing which keys to use for this purpose is useful for owners of any models of laptop computers.

Turn up and turn down sound

In the window of the player (a separate program or an online player on one of the popular services), the volume is adjusted by the buttons with arrows “Up” and “Down”, which are located next to the digital block. You don’t need to press Fn.

To adjust the volume, two keys are used in combination with Fn: one to turn down the sound on the laptop using the keyboard, the other to turn it up. They are located next to the button responsible for turning off the speakers. Here, the button bindings on devices from different manufacturers are also not the same. For the most common brands, the following options are possible (the first button decreases the volume, the second increases):

  • Asus. F11 and F12.
  • Acer. Some models use F11 and F12, but others use arrow keys (in conjunction with Fn).
  • Dell. F2 and F3.
  • Lenovo. F2 and F3.
  • Sony Vaio. F3 and F4.
  • HP. In some models. F10 and F11, but there are options on which the buttons with the “Up” and “Down” arrows are triggered (when Fn is held down).
  • Samsung. F7 and F8.
  • Toshiba. F9 and F10 (options are possible, for example, using Fn in combination with the numbers “3” and “4”).
  • MSI. F7 and F8.
  • Chromebook. F9 and F10.

The adjustment method is the same for any laptop models, but the actions of users when working with different models of devices are not the same due to differences in the size of the keys, their location, and the distribution of functions by the manufacturer. Owners of some laptops can easily perform the operation with their left hand, while owners of models with a different key arrangement will have to use both hands: hold Fn with the left, and press one of the twelve upper row buttons with the right.

One press will decrease or increase the volume by a fixed amount, most often by 5%. It will take several repetitions to reach the desired sound level. The changes will be noticeable not only by ear, they will be displayed on the icon in the system tray.

When you change the volume in the player using the arrow buttons, the slider or scale associated with the sound will also change its appearance. When watching a video, the indicators are displayed on the screen for 1-2 seconds and then disappear.

If the sound was turned off earlier, the first press of the combination will turn it on, and the repeated ones will decrease or increase the volume.

On a multimedia laptop, you can turn up the volume on the keyboard, as described above, or using special buttons to control sound and file playback. An additional row of mechanical or touch buttons is usually located above the main keyboard, but can also be located below it (to the right of the touchpad) or to the side.

The keys are easily recognizable by labels that are similar to those used in iPods. Such a useful addition is not found on all laptop models.

Programs have been developed to remap function keys (for example, Key Remapper or ATNSOFT Key Manager). They are recommended to be used if it is inconvenient to press the combinations specified by the manufacturer, for example, due to the large distance between the buttons, the physical characteristics of the PC owner himself (small hands, joint diseases) or a previously formed habit of other combinations.

The software is usually publicly available. With it, the user will be able to create combinations that are comfortable for himself. which will need to be remembered, since the inscriptions on the function buttons after the reconfiguration will lose their relevance.

Button shortcuts do not perform additional actions (which include sound control). if the Fn key is disabled in the BIOS. You can activate it like this:

  • Immediately after turning on or restarting the laptop, press the button that is responsible for entering Setup (often F2 or Del).
  • Find the string “Action Keys Mode”, “Hotkey Mode” or other similar wording (usually found in the section called “Configuration”).
  • Go to the desired item using the arrow keys, then press “Enter”.
  • In the menu of two lines, select the value opposite to that set (“Disabled” instead of “Enabled” and vice versa).
  • Save changes by pressing F10 and exit the program.

After loading, the behavior of the keys will change.

Some buttons are sometimes not pressed due to debris. In this case, they must be carefully removed to clean and then put back. With mechanical floors, the buttons are replaced with serviceable ones, and the oxidized contacts are cleaned of plaque. If the user has not had the opportunity to repair the equipment, it is better to send the laptop for repair.

All of these methods work on laptops with sound cards and speakers in good condition. The audio card can be disabled in the BIOS, which makes software-based methods for turning on the sound useless. You will need to enter Setup to find the item with the word “Audio” or “Sound” in the section with the word “Integrated” (since the option is suitable for integrated sound cards).

Why Is There No Sound On My Lenovo Computer?

If “Disabled” appears opposite the corresponding line, it should be replaced with “Enabled”, then save the configuration and exit. After downloading, you can try again to turn on the sound on the laptop and make the volume on the keyboard more or less.

The lack of effect from pressing keyboard shortcuts and changing settings in the BIOS often indicates problems with drivers or a broken sound card. In the first case, a not too experienced user can cope with the task, but the repair of the equipment should be entrusted to specialists.

Sound control hotkeys are useful for music, movie and game lovers to learn how to quickly adjust the volume. This will help avoid discomfort and conflicts, and will also make it easier to work with your laptop. The skill of working with the keyboard will be needed in the absence of a mouse and a breakdown of the touchpad.

Restoring sound on a laptop

There are various reasons for the lack of sound on a laptop. Sometimes they are quite simple, and in other cases it takes a long time to look for a malfunction. In any case, before proceeding with the troubleshooting, you need to understand what exactly needs to be fixed.

Reasons for no sound

Often the reason for the lack of sound on a laptop is precisely the user’s actions. For example, you downloaded new drivers or tried to update existing ones, but due to inexperience or for some other reason, you did something wrong, after which the sound disappeared. Actually, one should not despair, since almost everything is fixable.

Quite often, there is no sound on the computer, because the sound card is out of order. In this case, it will most likely need to be replaced. Also, the problem may be with the speakers. Check if they are properly and securely connected. Also connect headphones to the audio output. If there is sound in them, then the speakers are faulty. Now let’s look at how to restore sound on a Windows 7 laptop, depending on the problem that occurred.

What to do if the sound is missing

So let’s go to the Start menu and select Control Panel. Right-click on Computer, and in the list that appears, click Properties. Device Manager.

If a yellow circle with an exclamation mark is drawn next to the Sound Devices label, then the drivers simply flew off. You can fix this by installing new ones or updating existing ones. How to quickly update sound card drivers read here. Typically, a laptop comes with a utility disc, so you just need to download them again.

In addition, a similar problem can occur if you reinstall the OS. Developers do not always attach a CD with the necessary drivers to a laptop. In this case, before restoring sound on a Windows XP laptop, you will need to visit the website of the manufacturer of the technical device. On the Internet resource, you will need the Downloads section. Here, using the search, you should find and select the necessary drivers. Next, install them on your computer. Do not forget to clarify with which operating systems the program works, otherwise your actions may not lead to anything.

After installing the drivers, restart your laptop. Now check how the sound works. If he still does not appear, then the problem is something else. Initially, you can check the performance of the drivers with the help of special testers. For example, use programs such as Multimedia Mark or Sound Check.

The problem may also lie in the wrong settings. They help you adjust volume, frequencies, balance, etc. You can change these settings using the mixer. This utility on laptops, most often, has five sliders, moving which make the necessary changes. Check if they are all installed correctly. You will learn how to properly configure the sound on your computer from this article.

If the sound disappeared after you installed utilities or any programs, then you will need to follow these steps. Click Start-All Programs. Now go to the Standard section, where we need to go to the Utilities link. In them, select the line System Restore. Now you need to choose a restore point when there was sound. Test the speakers after loading.

All of these methods are quite accessible even for beginners. Therefore, if the sound on the laptop disappears, first try to follow what is recommended. If all else fails, then you may have to contact a repair shop. The same should be done if you are not confident in your abilities. But usually the problem is solved quite simply, and all actions do not take much time.

Ways to turn on sound

There are different ways, from the obvious and simple to the more complex and confusing. All of them can help in solving the problem. Only the Windows operating system is considered, but laptop models may be different.

Enabling the sound card

Some notebook models have a separate tab in the BIOS utility for enabling the audio device. Installing this option can be a last resort. To do this, you need to restart your computer, then:

  • During boot, you will need to press “F8”, “Del”, “Esc”, “F10” or “F12”, depending on which of the buttons corresponds to entering the BIOS.
  • Find the section “Onboard device configuration” in the utility.
  • Find the text “Audiocontroller” and check its status.
  • If necessary, change the state to “Enabled”.

Lack of drivers

Not only the lack of a driver for the sound card, but also its obsolescence (due to a Windows update) can lead to loss of sound. Therefore, the logical solution is to “update the driver”, which is done like this:

  • Launch “Device Manager” and open the “Sound Devices” section.
  • Select the last device in the list (the Nvidia or Radeon unit is responsible for the sound via HDMI cable from the video card. These drivers are updated from their programs) and right-click on it.
  • And wait for the system to perform the necessary actions.

This requires an Internet connection. And on Windows 10 you will also need to enable “Update”.

Sound in volume mixer

The operating system has a “volume mixer”. This element allows you to set the volume for different applications to make your work more comfortable. It is convenient to adjust the “sound in the background” in it. The volume mixer opens as follows:

  • Right-click on the speaker icon in the taskbar.
  • Select the item. “volume mixer”.

Volume Mixer contains items corresponding to running programs. By changing the position of the sliders, you can turn on and adjust the volume for each program: music in the browser, sounds in a game or program, system messages. The first on the list is the “Speakers” section. They adjust the overall volume. Enabling sound involves not only working with options, but also changing the position of the sliders.

Sound service

Perhaps the strangest event is the shutdown of this service. Some programs may accidentally perform this action. For the sound to return, the service will need to be restarted:

  • Open the “Control Panel”.
  • Follow the path: “Administration”. “Computer Management”.
  • Open the “Services and Applications” tab and go to the “Services” section.
  • Find “WindowsAudio” and right-click on it.
  • Select the item “Restart” or “Start”, whichever will be available.

Restarting the service will help if you receive a message stating that it is not available.

All ways to turn on sound on laptops

Sometimes users turn off the sound in some strange way. There are several ways to turn on sound on a laptop, among which are special cases that can make you break your head.

Accidental shutdown on keyboard

Notebooks from Asus, Lenovo, Acer, HP and others use function keys. With their help, you can turn off or turn on the sound. The use of these on / off buttons is configured in the BIOS. You can set the setting to require or not press Fn.

By accidentally hitting this combination, users often turn off the sound on their device.

Note! ASUS X540sc is characterized by the following feature. Reducing the sound to a minimum with the combination “FnF11” is not displayed in the volume mixer (for all laptops, this combination just changes the position of the slider). You can turn on the sound on this laptop only by returning the volume back.

Hello.

I never thought there could be so many problems with sound! It is undeniable, but this is a fact. a fairly large number of laptop users are faced with the fact that at one point, the sound on their device disappears

This can happen for various reasons and, more often than not, the problem can be fixed on your own by digging into the settings of Windows and drivers (thanks to which, you can save on computer services). In this article, I have collected some of the most common reasons why sound disappears on laptops (which even a novice PC user can check and eliminate!). So…

Reason: Adjusting the volume in Windows

I, of course, understand that many can express dissatisfaction. “that this is really really” for such an article. But still, many users do not know that sound in Windows is controlled not only by the slider located next to the clock (see Fig. 1).

If you click on the sound icon (located next to the clock, see Fig. 1) with the right mouse button, then several additional options will appear (see Fig. 2).

I recommend opening the following one by one:

  • volume mixer: it allows you to set your own volume in each application (for example, if you do not need sound in the browser, then it can be turned off there);
  • playback devices: in this tab you can choose through which speakers or speakers to play sound (and indeed, this tab shows all audio devices connected to the device. over, sometimes even those that you do not have! sound).

In the volume mixer, notice if the sound is minimized in your running application. It is recommended to raise all sliders up, at least while troubleshooting and troubleshooting sound problems (see Figure 3).

In the “Playback Devices” tab, note that you can have several devices (I have only one device in Fig. 4). and if the sound is “fed” to the wrong device. this may be the reason for the loss of sound. I recommend that you check all devices displayed in this tab!

By the way, sometimes a wizard built into Windows helps to understand and find the causes of sound problems. To start it, just right-click on the sound icon in Windows (next to the clock) and launch the corresponding wizard (as in Fig. 5).

Reason: drivers and their configuration

One of the most common causes of problems with sound (and not only with it) is conflicting drivers (or lack thereof). To check for them, I recommend opening the Device Manager: to do this, enter the Windows Control Panel. then switch the display to large icons and run this manager (see fig. 6).

Next, open the “Sound, game and video devices” tab. Pay attention to all lines: there should not be any yellow exclamation marks and red crosses (which mean that there are problems with the drivers).

By the way, I also recommend opening the “Unknown devices” tab (if there is one). It is possible that you simply do not have the necessary drivers in the system.

By the way, I also recommend checking the drivers in the Driver Booster utility (there are both free and paid versions, they differ in speed). The utility quickly and easily helps to check and find the required drivers (an example is shown in the screenshot below). What is convenient is that you do not need to independently search for various software sites, the utility itself will compare the dates and find the driver you need, you just have to press a button and agree to install it.

An article about programs for updating drivers: https://pcpro100.info/obnovleniya-drayverov/ (including Driver Booster)

Cause: Sound manager is not configured

In addition to the sound settings in Windows itself, there is (almost always) a sound manager in the system, which is installed along with the drivers (in most cases, this is Realtek High Definition Audio). And quite often, it is in it that not optimal settings can be set, which make the sound inaudible

It’s very simple: go to the Windows Control Panel. and then go to the Hardware and Sound tab. Further on this tab, you should see the dispatcher that is installed on your hardware. For example, the laptop I’m currently setting up has the Dell Audio app installed. This software must be opened (see fig. 10).

Next, pay attention to the basic sound settings: first of all, check the volume and checkboxes, which can completely mute the sound (see Fig. 11).

Another important point: you need to check if the laptop correctly detects the device connected to it. For example, you plugged in headphones, but the laptop did not recognize them and does not work correctly with them. Result: there is no sound in the headphones!

To avoid this. when connecting the same headphones (for example), the laptop usually asks if it has correctly identified them. Your task: point him to the correct sound device (which you connected). Actually, this is what happens in Fig. 12.

Reason: the sound card is disabled in the BIOS

In some laptops, you can disable the sound card in the BIOS settings. Thus, you are unlikely to hear the sound from your mobile “friend”. Sometimes BIOS settings can be “accidentally” changed by inept actions (for example, when installing Windows, inexperienced users often change not only what is needed).

First go into the BIOS (as a rule, you need to press the Del or F2 button immediately after turning on the laptop). You can learn more about which buttons to press in this article: https://pcpro100.info/kak-voyti-v-BIOS-klavishi-vhoda/

Since the settings in the BIOS differ depending on the manufacturer, it is rather difficult to give universal instructions. I recommend going to all the tabs and checking all the items that contain the word “Audio”. For example, Asus laptops have an Advanced tab. in which you need to switch the High Definition Audio line to Enabled mode (see. Fig. 13).

Next, save the settings (most often the F10 button) and exit the BIOS (the Esc button). After restarting the laptop. the sound should appear if the reason was the settings in the BIOS

Reason: lack of some audio and video codecs

Quite often, the problem is observed when trying to play a movie or audio recording. If there is no sound when opening video files or music (but there is sound in other applications). the problem is 99.9% related to codecs!

  • first remove all old codecs from the system completely;
  • then restart the laptop;
  • reinstall one of the sets offered below (you will find it by the link) in full extended mode (thus, you will have all the most necessary codecs in your system).

For those who do not want to install new codecs into the system, there is another option, download and install a video player, which already contains everything you need to play files of various types. Such players are becoming quite popular, especially recently (and no wonder who wants to suffer with codecs ?!). You will find a link to an article about such a player below

Reason: problem with sound card

The last thing I wanted to dwell on in this article is the problems of the sound card (it can fail during sudden surges in electricity (for example, during lightning or welding)).

Restarting the service will help if you receive a message stating that it is not available.

other methods

Depending on the characteristics of your particular computer and its keyboard, you can use shortcut key combinations to mute the sound on your laptop:

  • fnF5;
  • fn the crossed out speaker icon.

Important! You can also turn off sound effects in Punto Switcher if you are using it.

Every child loves to understand everything empirically, and a laptop will not be an exception. he will definitely click different buttons with interest and enthusiasm, figuring out what the result is. If your PC is used from time to time by your advanced child, who wants to watch cartoons, or an interesting video on YouTube, then in order not to give him the opportunity to delete your important data at the time of viewing, you can simply lock the entire keyboard for a while.

This can be done using the standard Windows capabilities through the control panel menu, but it is easier and faster to use special applications. One of the best in this regard is Kid Key Lock. The interface is clear and accessible, and the shutdown takes place in just 2 clicks.

Important! This program does not need to be downloaded and is freely available.

Another option for special software is KeyFreeze. True, you will have to download and install the application on your laptop.

The laptop embodies compactness and convenience so that you can use it anytime, anywhere. But more and more often, for the sake of its greater mobility, the laptop is becoming more compact.

What buttons give a sound?

PCs running on “Windows” operating system produce sound when 3 keys are pressed:

  • Caps Lock. This button makes it possible to write all letters in capital letters when typing.
  • Scrool Lock. This function is used extremely rarely, its meaning depends on the specific software for which you need to press the button.
  • Num Lock. This button is used by those PC users who need to make digital input in a more convenient way. directly on the keyboard, and not from the top row of buttons.

Windows built-in tools

Every laptop owner found himself in a situation where neither the volume nor the sound quality was enough for comfortable listening to music or watching a movie. This flaw can be corrected using the built-in tools of the system.

  • Right click on the speaker icon in the system tray. Open the list of playback devices.
  • Find the laptop speakers that produce sound in the list. Right click on them and go to equipment properties.
  • Go to the “Improvements” tab. In the list of sound enhancement effects, check “Equalizer”.
  • On the “Improvements” tab, in the “Sound Effect Properties” field, click on the button with three dots in the “Settings” section.
  • Raise all the sliders in the equalizer to the top and save the changes.

If, after adjusting the dynamics during playback, they wheeze, then open the equalizer again and slightly lower the first 2-3 sliders. Unfortunately, not all sound cards have such settings. If you do not see the “Improvements” tab in the properties of the speakers, or there is a tab, but the equalizer cannot be activated, then the built-in means to improve the sound on a laptop will not work.

In addition, turning the equalizer to the maximum can lead to degraded sound quality and quick failure of laptop speakers. Therefore, it is not recommended to use this method constantly. It is better to purchase a normal speaker system and connect it to your laptop than to replace the laptop’s built-in speakers.
