Fragment and Sketch Program
Recently, Windows 10 added another app for working with screenshots. “Snippet and Sketch”. It also allows you to take snapshots of the selected area, selected windows, or the entire screen. Most likely, in the future, this utility will replace “Scissors”.
To call “Fragment and Sketch”, press Win Shift S or find the program by name through the search system. Launched it, select the area of the screenshot using the buttons that appear on the display.
To see a screenshot, open Paint and press Ctrl V. When the image appears in the program, it can be edited and saved to the Hard Disk. Some Windows assemblies have a built-in editor in Snippet and Sketch that allows you to do without Paint.

Using Screen Snapshot to Take Screenshots in Windows 10
Windows 10 Fall 1809 Update introduces a new tool to take screenshots of a screen or an area of it and easily edit the captured screenshot. In different places of the system, this tool is called slightly differently Screen Fragment, Fragment and Sketch, Sketch on Screenshot, but they mean the same utility.
In this SIMple tutorial on how to take a screenshot of Windows 10 using a new feature that will replace the built-in Scissors utility in the future. The rest of the ways to take screenshots continue to work the same as before: How to take a screenshot of Windows 10.
How to launch Slice and Sketch
I found 5 ways to start creating screenshots using Screen Snippet, I’m not sure if all of them will be useful to you, but I will share:
- Use Win Shift S hotkeys (Win is the Windows logo key).
- In the start menu or in the search on the taskbar, find the Snippet and Sketch application and launch it.
- Run the “Screenshot” item in the Windows notification area (may not be there by default).
- Launch the standard application “Scissors”, and from it. “Sketch on a fragment of the screen”.
It is also possible to assign the launch of the utility to the Print Screen key: to do this, go to Settings. Accessibility. Keyboard.
Enable the item “Use the Print Screen button to start the function of creating a fragment of the screen”.
Taking a screenshot
If you run the utility from the Start menu, search or from the “Scissors”, the editor of the created screenshots will open (where you need to click “Create” in order to take a screenshot), if you use the other methods, the creation of screenshots will open immediately, they work in a slightly different way (the second step will be different):
- At the top of the screen, you will see three buttons: to take a screenshot of a rectangular screen area, a free-form screen fragment, or a screenshot of the entire Windows 10 screen (the fourth button is to exit the tool) Click on the desired button and, if required, select the desired area of the screen.
- If you started creating a screenshot in the Slice and Sketch application already running, the newly created snapshot will open in it. If using hotkeys or from the notification area, the screenshot will be placed in the clipboard with the ability to paste into any program, and a notification will appear, by clicking on which a “Screen fragment” with this image will open.
In the “Slice and Sketch” application, you can add captions to the created screenshot, delete something from the image, crop it, save it to your computer.
There are also options for copying the edited image to the clipboard and the “Share” button standard for Windows 10 applications, which allows you to send it through supported applications on your computer.
I do not presume to estimate how convenient the new feature is, but I think it will be useful for a novice user: most of the functions that may be required are present (except, perhaps, for creating a screenshot by timer, you can find this feature in the Scissors junk).
Print Screen key and combinations with its participation
The first way to take a screenshot of the desktop or program window in Windows 10 is to use the Print Screen key, which on a computer or laptop keyboard is usually located in the upper right part and may have an abbreviated version of the signature, for example, PrtScn.
When you press it, a screenshot of the entire screen is placed on the clipboard (i.e., in memory), which you can then paste using the standard CtrlV key combination (or the menu of any program Edit. Paste) into a Word document, as an image into a graphics editor Paint for later saving the picture and in almost any other programs that support working with images.
If you use the Alt Print Screen key combination, then the clipboard will not capture the entire screen, but only the active program window.
And the last option: if you do NOT want to deal with the clipboard, but want to take a screenshot immediately as an image, then in Windows 10 you can use the Win key combination (key with the OS logo) Print Screen. After clicking it, the screenshot will be immediately saved to the Pictures folder. Screenshots.
Game bar Win G
In Windows 10, pressing the Win G key combination in full screen programs opens the Game Bar, allowing you to record the screen. And also, if necessary, take a screenshot using the appropriate button on it or a key combination (by default. Win Alt Print Screen).
If such a panel does not open for you, check the settings of the standard XBOX application, this function is controlled there, plus it may NOT work if your card is not supported or drivers are not installed for it.
A new way to take a screenshot in Windows 10
Windows 10 Update 1703 (April 2017) introduced an additional way to take a screenshot. the WinShiftS keyboard shortcut. When you press THESE keys, the screen is shaded, the mouse pointer changes to a “cross” and with the help of it, while holding the left mouse button, you can select any rectangular area of the screen, a screenshot of which you need to take.
And in Windows October 1809 (October 2018), this method was even more updated and now it is a tool “Slice and Sketch”, which allows you to create, among other things, screenshots of an arbitrary area of the screen and perform SIMple editing. Read more about this method in the instructions: How to use a snippet to take screenshots of Windows 10.
After the mouse button is released, the Selected area of the screen is placed on the clipboard and can be pasted in a graphics editor or in a document.
How to take a screenshot in Windows 10
Even if you know perfectly well how screenshots are taken, I am almost sure that in this article you will find some new ways for you to take a screenshot in Windows 10, and without using third-party programs: only by the means offered by Microsoft.
For beginners: a screenshot of the screen or its area can be useful if you need someone to demonstrate something depicted on it. It is an image (snapshot) that you can save on your disk, send by email to social networks, use in documents, etc.
Note: to take a screenshot on a Windows 10 tablet without a physical keyboard, you can use the Win key combination volume down button.
Screenshot software “Scissors
Windows 10 has a standard Scissors program that allows you to easily create screenshots of areas of the screen (or the entire screen), including with a delay, edit them and save them in the desired format.
To launch the Scissors application, find it in the All Programs list, or more SIMply, start typing the application name in the search.
After launch, you have the following options:
- Clicked on the arrow in the “Create” item, you can choose what kind of picture you want to take. random shape, rectangle, whole screen.
- In the “hold” item you can set to delay the screenshot for a few seconds.
After the picture is taken, a window with this screenshot will open, to which you can add one or another annotation using a pen and a marker, erase any information and, of course, save (in the file-save as menu) as an image file required format (PNG, GIF, JPG).
Microsoft Snip Editor
About a month ago, as part of its Microsoft Garage project, the company introduced a new free program for working with screenshots in the latest versions of Windows. Snip Editor.
In terms of functionality, the program is SIMilar to the Scissors mentioned above, but it adds the ability to create audio annotations to screenshots, intercepts the Print Screen key press in the system, automatically starting the creation of a screenshot of the screen area and SIMply has, perhaps, a more pleasant interface (by the way, to a greater extent suitable for touch devices than the interface of second SIMilar programs, in my opinion).
At the moment, Microsoft Snip has only an English-language version of the interface, but if you are interested in trying something new and interesting (and also if you have a tablet with Windows 10), I recommend it. You can download the program on the Official page (update 2018: no longer available, now everything is the same in Windows 10 using the WinShiftS keys) https://mix.Office.com/Snip
In this article, I did not mention many third-party programs that also allow you to take screenshots and have advanced functions at the same time (Snagit, Greenshot, Snippy, Jing, and many others). Perhaps I will write about this in a separate article. On the other hand, you can already look at the software just mentioned (I tried to mark the best representatives).

There is also a solution for this method.
The most elementary thing is to select the “electronic keyboard” and repeat the steps you need to take. And there is another option with the introduction of specialized programs.
Honestly, there are a lot of such utilities. And even we haven’t tried all of them. But we definitely know that taking a screenshot of the screen with their help does NOT present much effort. Everything is pretty SIMple: you need to download the program to your computer, run it and take a “screen delight”. a snapshot.

In the program Scissors
The Snipping Tool is a special software for taking screenshots. It is initially available in Windows 7, 8 and 10 (but not in all editions).
You can open “Scissors” in the same way as Paint: Start → Accessories. Windows → Scissors.
Or by typing the word scissors directly into the open Start menu.

Recording an image to a computer is the same as in Paint (see above).
On a note. Some Windows editions do not include the Scissors program. Therefore, if you did NOT find it on your computer, it means that it is initially absent in your system. Use instead one of those programs that I talk about at the end of the article.
Let’s take a look at how to make a screen using Paint. This is the most popular method because Paint is on every computer.

Screenshot is a screenshot, a photograph of what a person sees on a computer.
To create such photos, there is a special Print Screen button on the keyboard. It can also be called Prt Scr, PrtScr, Prt Sc, PrtScn or PrntScrn.
After clicking on it, nothing will happen. no Clicks, no flashes. But the photographed screen will be fixed in the PC memory. For this snapshot to appear, it must be inserted into an imaging program. For example, in Paint.
The most popular way to take screenshots:
- Press the Print Screen button on the keyboard.

But there are other ways too. I will tell you more about each below.
There are also separate applications for taking screenshots. They are handy when you need to take pictures frequently. Next, I will briefly talk about the Most convenient free programs.

How to take a screenshot (photo, screenshot) of a part of the screen in Windows 7
There are often cases that in order to prepare some reports, lessons, coursework, we need to insert photographs of the windows of the programs in which we work. Sometimes it is necessary to photograph the entire screen as a whole, sometimes only the active window of the program in which you are working.
However, there are times when we only need a photo of a small portion of the screen. You can, of course, take such a picture with the help of special software, but if you don’t want to install any programs, let’s figure out how to do this using the standard means that Windows 7 offers us.
And oddly enough, this can be done in two ways.
Take a screenshot of a part of the screen using the Alt and PrtSc keys, as well as the Paint graphic editor.
I like this method better, to be honest, because it works 100% anyway.
So, let’s say I need to take a photo of a part of the KMPlayer window. I don’t need the entire window, but I need a picture of the logo itself:
I make the window active by clicking on it with the left mouse button once. Next, I hold down the Alt key and after PrtSc. Thus, I put a snapshot of this window into the clipboard.
Next, I launch the Paint graphic editor and insert our window there using the CtrlV keyboard shortcuts.
In the “Home” tab, I click the “Crop” item and select the part of the photo I need:
Next, I right-click on that piece of the photo that I have selected and select the “Crop” item from the drop-down menu.
In total, I got a picture of the logo, which is what I wanted. It remains only to save it by clicking on the leftmost tab in the form of an arrow and selecting “Save As”.
Only when you save the picture, it is better to choose the jpg format and preferably the place where you saved it is not forgotten.
Watch the tutorial. In which I show you how to take different screenshots in this way:
Using a mini-program such as Scissors. It is located along this path: “Start. All Programs. Accessories. Scissors”.
The program seems to be good, but not in all cases allows you to take a picture of what you want. However, if you need to take a quick photo of something, then it will do just right.
We launch the program. In the “Create” tab, you can select areas of the screen to photograph. Here you can take photos of both the whole screen and a separate window, and you can also take pictures of an arbitrary rectangular area or in general an area of arbitrary shape. I choose “Rectangle”
And right away I photograph my logo. In order to save the picture, you need to click on the floppy disk. That’s all.
We look. In which I show you how to work with the Scissors program:
