How to set up sound on a Lenovo laptop

Restoring sound on a laptop

There are various reasons for the lack of sound on a laptop. Sometimes they are quite simple, while in other cases it takes a long time to find a fault. In any case, before proceeding with the troubleshooting, you need to understand what exactly needs to be fixed.

Reasons for no sound

Often the reason for the lack of sound on a laptop is precisely the user’s actions. For example, you downloaded new drivers or tried to update existing ones, but due to inexperience or for some other reason, you did something wrong, after which the sound disappeared. Actually, one should not despair, since almost everything is fixable.

Quite often, there is no sound on the computer, because the sound card is out of order. In this case, it will most likely need to be replaced. Also, the problem may be with the speakers. Check if they are properly and securely connected. Also connect headphones to the audio output. If there is sound in them, then the speakers are faulty. Now let’s look at how to restore sound on a Windows 7 laptop, depending on the problem that occurred.

What to do if the sound is missing

So let’s go to the Start menu and select Control Panel. Right-click on Computer, and in the list that appears, click Properties. Device Manager.

If a yellow circle with an exclamation mark is drawn next to the Sound devices inscription, then the drivers simply flew off. You can fix this by installing new ones or updating existing ones. How to quickly update sound card drivers read here. Typically, a laptop comes with a utility disc, so you just need to download them again.

In addition, a similar problem can occur if you reinstall the OS. Developers do not always attach a CD with the necessary drivers to a laptop. In this case, before restoring sound on a Windows XP laptop, you will need to visit the website of the manufacturer of the technical device. On the Internet resource, you will need the Downloads section. Here, using the search, you should find and select the required drivers. Next, install them on your computer. Do not forget to clarify what operating systems the program works with, otherwise your actions may lead to nothing.

After installing the drivers, restart your laptop. Now check how the sound works. If he still does not appear, then the problem is something else. Initially, you can check the performance of the drivers with the help of special testers. For example, use programs such as Multimedia Mark or Sound Check.

The problem may also lie in the wrong settings. They help you adjust volume, frequencies, balance, etc. You can change these settings using the mixer. This utility on laptops, most often, has five sliders, moving which make the necessary changes. Check if they are all installed correctly. You will learn how to properly configure the sound on your computer from this article.

If the sound disappeared after you installed utilities or any programs, then you will need to follow these steps. Click Start-All Programs. Now go to the Standard section, where we need to go to the Utilities link. In them, select the line System Restore. Now you need to choose a restore point when there was sound. Test the speakers after loading.

All of these methods are quite accessible even for beginners. Therefore, if the sound on the laptop disappears, first try to follow what is recommended. If all else fails, then you may have to contact a repair shop. The same should be done if you are not confident in your abilities. But usually the problem is solved quite simply, and all actions do not take much time.

Sound in volume mixer

The operating system has a “volume mixer”. This element allows you to set the volume for different applications to make your work more comfortable. It is convenient to adjust the “sound in the background” in it. The volume mixer opens as follows:

  • Right-click on the speaker icon in the taskbar.
  • Select the item. “volume mixer”.

Volume Mixer contains items corresponding to running programs. By changing the position of the sliders, you can turn on and adjust the volume for each program: music in the browser, sounds in a game or program, system messages. The first on the list is the “Speakers” section. They adjust the overall volume. Enabling sound involves not only working with options, but also changing the position of the sliders.

All ways to turn on sound on laptops

Sometimes users turn off the sound in some strange way. There are several ways to turn on sound on a laptop, among which are special cases that can make you break your head.

Ways to turn on sound

There are different ways, from the obvious and simple to the more complex and confusing. All of them can help in solving the problem. Only the Windows operating system is considered, but laptop models may be different.

Sound service

Perhaps the strangest event is the shutdown of this service. Some programs may accidentally perform this action. For the sound to return, the service will need to be restarted:

  • Open the “Control Panel”.
  • Follow the path: “Administration”. “Computer Management”.
  • Open the “Services and Applications” tab and go to the “Services” section.
  • Find “WindowsAudio” and right-click on it.
  • Select the item “Restart” or “Start”, whichever is available.

Restarting the service will help if you receive a message stating that it is not available.

Lack of drivers

Not only the lack of a driver for the sound card, but also its obsolescence (due to a Windows update) can lead to loss of sound. Therefore, the logical solution is to “update the driver”, which is done like this:

  • Launch “Device Manager” and open the “Sound Devices” section.
  • Select the last device in the list (the Nvidia or Radeon unit is responsible for the sound via HDMI cable from the video card. These drivers are updated from their programs) and right-click on it.
  • And wait for the system to perform the necessary actions.

This requires an Internet connection. And on Windows 10 you will also need to enable “Update”.

Accidental shutdown on keyboard

Notebooks from Asus, Lenovo, Acer, HP, and others use function keys. With their help, you can turn off or turn on the sound. The use of these on / off buttons is configured in the BIOS. You can set the setting to require or not press Fn.

By accidentally hitting this combination, users often turn off the sound on their device.

Note! ASUS X540sc is characterized by the following feature. Reducing the sound to a minimum with the combination “FnF11” is not displayed in the volume mixer (for all laptops, this combination just changes the position of the slider). You can turn on the sound on this laptop only by returning the volume back.

Enabling the sound card

Some laptop models have a separate tab in the BIOS utility for enabling the audio device. Setting this option can be a last resort. To do this, you need to restart your computer, then:

  • During boot, you will need to press “F8”, “Del”, “Esc”, “F10” or “F12”, depending on which of the buttons corresponds to entering the BIOS.
  • Find the section “Onboard device configuration” in the utility.
  • Find the text “Audiocontroller” and check its status.
  • If necessary, change the state to “Enabled”.

Hello.

I never thought there could be so many problems with sound! It is undeniable, but this is a fact. a fairly large number of laptop users are faced with the fact that at one point, the sound on their device disappears

This can happen for various reasons and, more often than not, the problem can be fixed on your own by digging into the settings of Windows and drivers (thanks to which, you can save on computer services). In this article, I have collected some of the most common reasons why sound disappears on laptops (which even a novice PC user can check and eliminate!). So…

Reason: Adjusting the volume in Windows

I, of course, understand that many can express dissatisfaction. “that this is really really” for such an article. But still, many users do not know that sound in Windows is controlled not only by the slider located next to the clock (see Fig. 1).

If you click on the sound icon (located next to the clock, see Fig. 1) with the right mouse button, then several additional options will appear (see Fig. 2).

I recommend opening the following one by one:

  • volume mixer: it allows you to set your own volume in each application (for example, if you do not need sound in the browser, then you can turn it off there);
  • playback devices: in this tab you can choose through which speakers or speakers to play sound (and indeed, this tab shows all audio devices connected to the device. over, sometimes even those that you do not have! sound).

In the volume mixer, notice if the sound is minimized in your running application. It is recommended to raise all sliders up, at least while troubleshooting sound problems (see Figure 3).

Why Is There No Sound On My Lenovo Computer?

In the “Playback Devices” tab, note that you can have several devices (I have only one device in Fig. 4). and if the sound is “fed” to the wrong device. this may be the reason for the loss of sound. I recommend that you check all devices displayed in this tab!

By the way, sometimes a wizard built into Windows helps to understand and find the causes of sound problems. To start it, just right-click on the sound icon in Windows (next to the clock) and launch the corresponding wizard (as in Fig. 5).

Reason: drivers and their configuration

One of the most common causes of problems with sound (and not only with it) is conflicting drivers (or lack thereof). To check for them, I recommend opening the Device Manager: to do this, enter the Windows Control Panel. then switch the display to large icons and run this manager (see fig. 6).

Next, open the “Sound, game and video devices” tab. Pay attention to all lines: there should not be any yellow exclamation marks and red crosses (which mean that there are problems with the drivers).

By the way, I also recommend opening the “Unknown devices” tab (if there is one). It is possible that you simply do not have the necessary drivers in the system.

By the way, I also recommend checking the drivers in the Driver Booster utility (there are both free and paid versions, they differ in speed). The utility quickly and easily helps to check and find the required drivers (an example is shown in the screenshot below). What is convenient is that you do not need to independently search for various software sites, the utility itself will compare the dates and find the driver you need, you just have to press a button and agree to install it.

An article about programs for updating drivers: https://pcpro100.info/obnovleniya-drayverov/ (including Driver Booster)

Cause: Sound manager is not configured

In addition to the sound settings in Windows itself, there is (almost always) a sound manager in the system, which is installed along with the drivers (in most cases, this is Realtek High Definition Audio). And quite often, it is in it that not optimal settings can be set, which make the sound inaudible

It’s very simple: go to the Windows Control Panel. and then go to the Hardware and Sound tab. Further on this tab, you should see the dispatcher that is installed on your hardware. For example, the laptop I’m currently setting up has the Dell Audio app installed. This software must be opened (see fig. 10).

Next, pay attention to the basic sound settings: first of all, check the volume and checkboxes, which can completely mute the sound (see Fig. 11).

Another important point: you need to check if the laptop correctly detects the device connected to it. For example, you plugged in headphones, but the laptop did not recognize them and does not work correctly with them. Result: there is no sound in the headphones!

To avoid this. when connecting the same headphones (for example), the laptop usually asks if it has correctly identified them. Your task: point him to the correct sound device (which you connected). Actually, this is what happens in Fig. 12.

Reason: the sound card is disabled in the BIOS

In some laptops, you can disable the sound card in the BIOS settings. Thus, you are unlikely to hear the sound from your mobile “friend”. Sometimes BIOS settings can be “accidentally” changed by inept actions (for example, when installing Windows, inexperienced users often change not only what is needed).

First, enter the BIOS (as a rule, you need to press the Del or F2 button immediately after turning on the laptop). You can learn more about which buttons to press in this article: https://pcpro100.info/kak-voyti-v-BIOS-klavishi-vhoda/

Since the settings in the BIOS differ depending on the manufacturer, it is rather difficult to give universal instructions. I recommend going to all the tabs and checking all the items that contain the word “Audio”. For example, Asus laptops have an Advanced tab. in which you need to switch the High Definition Audio line to Enabled mode (see. Fig. 13).

Next, save the settings (most often the F10 button) and exit the BIOS (the Esc button). After restarting the laptop. the sound should appear if the reason was the settings in the BIOS

Reason: lack of some audio and video codecs

Quite often, the problem is observed when trying to play a movie or audio recording. If there is no sound when opening video files or music (but there is sound in other applications). the problem is 99.9% related to codecs!

  • first remove all old codecs from the system completely;
  • then restart the laptop;
  • reinstall one of the sets offered below (you will find it by the link) in full extended mode (this way, you will have all the most necessary codecs in your system).
READ  Can I install Viber laptop

For those who do not want to install new codecs into the system, there is another option, download and install a video player, which already contains everything you need to play files of various types. Such players are becoming quite popular, especially recently (and no wonder who wants to suffer with codecs ?!). You will find a link to an article about such a player below

Reason: problem with sound card

The last thing I wanted to dwell on in this article is the problems of the sound card (it can fail during sudden surges of electricity (for example, during lightning or welding)).

BIOS settings

Each laptop stores its BIOS settings on a battery-powered chip. The latter is not eternal, and after many years of use it may turn out that when turned on, there is no sound on the laptop. This means that you need to check the BIOS.

Enabling and disabling the sound card on laptops can be done in different sections. For ASUS products, this is Advanced, in some Lenovo, HP is Integrated Peripherals. The audio card itself can be referred to as High Definition Audio, Onboard Audio Chip, or a line with the manufacturer’s name ending in Codec (for example, Azalia Codec). The option value must be set to Enabled to return sound on the laptop.

Random button presses

The laptop is compact enough. Keyboard buttons are often accidentally pressed. Therefore, in order to get sound back on a laptop, you should first try the desired functional combination.

But you can find the necessary buttons when the sound suddenly disappears without studying the documentation. It is worth taking a close look at the keyboard. The key, except for the main symbol, which depicts a crossed-out speaker, when pressed simultaneously with Fn, mutes the sound. Using this combination, it is easy to fix the situation when your favorite track or movie is not playing.

Likewise, if there is no sound, you can try increasing the volume. This is also done with functional keyboard shortcuts. The required buttons are indicated by symbols with a speaker, plus and minus. Their location may vary on different laptop models. For example, on HP, Acer products, the volume is changed with the Fn arrow keys.

Driver problems

Unfortunately, problems with sound card drivers may not be the user’s fault. This happens when updating the system, installing various software. To assess the condition of the drivers, you will need:

  • go to Start-Control Panel-System, click the Device Manager button on the active tab;
  • right-click on Computer, select control, the Manager section in the left column;
  • press WinR and type devmgmt.msc.

In any of these ways, you can call up a list of devices installed on the system. Audio drivers are located in the Sound Devices section. In case of malfunctions, the block will be deployed immediately. When there is an icon with a red cross on the name of the audio device, you should right-click on it and select the item Activate.

A yellow triangle icon indicates that the drivers are not working properly. First of all, you should try to roll back the installation and return to the working version. To do this, you need:

  • click on the name of the PCM device;
  • select Properties from the menu;
  • enter the Driver tab.

There is a Rollback button here. After pressing it, the system will try to remove the last installed driver version. The laptop needs to be restarted.

System service failure

The rarest problem with no sound is the failure of the Windows Audio system service. This usually indicates a driver problem. You can manually enable the Windows Audio service by going to the Computer Management, Services section. But it doesn’t make sense to do it all the time. Sooner or later, the problem will develop into a situation with a complete lack of sound. Therefore, it is worth restarting the laptop and proceed with the methods described in this article.

Volume mute

If there is no sound on the laptop, you should look at the speaker icon in the taskbar next to the clock. If it is crossed out, it means that the audio output is disabled by software. You can adjust the parameters and return the sound as follows:

  • in Windows 7, Windows 8, left-click (LMB) on the icon in the taskbar, in the opened regulator, move the slider to the maximum;
  • in Windows 10, the procedure is the same, the slider is a horizontal bar, move the slider to the right.

The reason why there is no sound on the laptop may be software turning off the output for individual applications or system. To get to the desired settings, click on the speaker icon near the clock with the right mouse button (RMB). In Windows 7, Windows 10 in the drop-down menu there is an item Open Volume Mixer. The mixer window lists all applications that are currently accessing the audio card. By changing the position of the sliders, you can solve the problem when there is no sound only when the video or audio player is running.

First. reboot

If the sound in the laptop suddenly disappeared when starting any application, you need to try to completely reboot the system.

If the sound stops working abruptly, you need to:

  • press Start-shutdown;
  • select Restart;
  • Confirm your choice when prompted to force shutdown applications.

By doing this in this way, you can prevent the application of the settings that were initialized by the mute application from being applied. An audio greeting will indicate that the problem has been fixed when the system boots.

Connector problems

A 3.5 mm headphone jack, which is found in almost all laptops, has a service pin. It gives a signal to the audio card to turn off the speakers to play sound only on the headphones. Over time, the service contact may deform and constantly transmit to the system data that the headphones are connected.

The problem does not appear unexpectedly. The sound starts to disappear when you move the plug, plays unevenly in the headphones, there is only one loudspeaker. If this situation develops, the speakers may be disabled due to a connector problem. As a result, the sound does not work in any application.

How to restore sound on a laptop

A laptop is a highly reliable and convenient device for people who want to have a mobile workstation close at hand. But what if the sound on the laptop disappears? This may indicate both hardware problems and changes in the operating system of the device. It is quite easy to eliminate the causes of some problems. And to eliminate others, in order to restore sound on a laptop, certain skills and knowledge are required.

Check your speakers

If external speakers are used to reproduce sound, check that they are plugged in, that all wires and plugs are connected, and that the volume control is not turned off.

Check system settings

Open Start. Control Panel. Sound and check all parameters. Here, in the Control Panel, you can open the menu of your IDT or Realtek audio codec, and see if their settings are normal.

Is the sound muted in Windows?

Pay attention to the icon in the system tray (lower right corner of the screen). If there is a red crossed circle next to the image of the white speaker, you need to increase the volume by moving the slider up.

Update your drivers

Open Start. Control Panel. Device Manager. In the list of devices, find the Sound, video and game controllers tab. Right-click on your codec (IDT or Realtek HD) and in the context menu that opens, try to disable-enable the device, or update the drivers. You can also open the laptop manufacturer’s website in the browser, find your model on it and download sound drivers for it.

The above steps will fix the problem 99% of the time. The chances of a malfunction of the speakers themselves are very small, so if you are not successful, contact a more experienced friend or a service center. You should not write in the comments requests to help restore the sound on the laptop, it is useless, since it is impossible to do this remotely without seeing your laptop and the settings set in it before your eyes. The problem often lies in the little things, such as an extra checkmark, the adjustment slider dragged in the wrong direction, the driver is not installed.

Frequently encountered queries in search engines, according to statistics, are issues related to the lack of sound, as can be seen in the screenshot from Google below.

Why is there no sound on the laptop?

This problem can occur on any laptop with any operating system, therefore, below we give a list of actions that must be performed sequentially for all. Perhaps, after one of them, the sound that disappeared in the laptop will appear. The problem can be caused by two factors: software or hardware. Let’s start simple and move on to more complex.

Task bar

In this case, you can activate the laptop speakers in just 2 clicks:

  • Left-click on the corresponding icon on the taskbar.
  • Turn on the speakers with one more click.
  • Yes, it’s that simple. Difficulties in this case will not arise even for beginners.

How to set up sound on a laptop?

Many laptop and computer users often do not know how to turn on Bluetooth or what to do if the keyboard does not work. However, sometimes more trivial tasks also cause difficulties. For example, people don’t know how to turn on the sound and turn up the volume. In fact, it is very simple to cope with the solution of these tasks.

How to turn up the volume on a laptop?

There are many ways to make the sound loud and amplify the signal. over, you can even adjust the volume from the keyboard. The most popular options are as follows:

  • through the taskbar;
  • using function keys;
  • via windows options.

Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. However, all of the following methods allow you to make the desired sound settings.

Windows settings

This method is a little time consuming. To amplify the sound and make it louder, you need to perform the following manipulations:

  • Right-click on “Start” and select the “Options” option from the menu.
  • Open the subsection “Sound” and set the mixer to the desired volume.
  • Raising the volume is somewhat more difficult in this case. However, you can adjust other sound settings you want in the Windows settings. The variability of the presented customization method is higher.

How to turn on sound on a laptop?

There are several ways to turn on the sound and increase its volume on laptops running Windows:

Both methods are distinguished by their simplicity and speed. Of course, they will not be able to figure out why the sound on the computer does not work, however, turning on the speakers will not be difficult.

Function Keys

You can also add volume using the function keys. As a rule, they are located next to the on / off sound button. To set the desired sound on Asus laptops, you need to press Fn and F11 (volume down) or Fn and F12 (volume up). For laptops of other brands, the buttons may be different. In any case, they will be marked with the appropriate icons. By the way, using the function keys you can adjust the brightness on your laptop.

Selecting a playback device

Windows outputs sound to the device specified in the settings. There are situations where the system is feeding sound to the headphone output and the headphones are not connected. The user will hear only silence. We fix this. in the tray on the volume icon, select the context menu, and in it “playback devices”. Next, we select either the speakers or the “default” item so that the sound goes to the speakers.

In the volume settings, you can immediately adjust the volume for individual applications and the system as a whole. To do this, you need to select “mixer” instead of “playback device”. After turning on a certain program, it will appear in the mixer window. This makes it possible to customize the sound individually for all applications.

How to configure sound on a Windows 10 laptop so that it actually works?

Good afternoon, dear readers of my blog! With the advent of a new version, many users have a question. how to set it up correctly. Quite often, the settings from the previous OS remain the same, but there are also changes. Today we will figure out how to adjust the sound on a Windows 10 laptop to make it more comfortable to work with it. Below is a step-by-step instruction for the setup process and possible malfunctions in the operation of the audio device.

Driver check

As a rule, when you buy a laptop, it already has an operating system. If the laptop was bought recently, it is Windows 10 OS. For the sound device to work correctly, a driver must be installed on it. This is a special program that is an instruction and explains the device how it needs to work.

You can check whether the driver is installed in the “Device Manager”, it opens through a combination of WinX. We find “Sound devices” and look for a sound card in them. If the drivers are there, then there will be no additional icons. If the device is not configured correctly, an exclamation or question mark will be drawn. Click RMB and choose to update the driver.

If there is no sound video card in Sound Devices, then the driver is not installed. To fix this, you need to go to the laptop manufacturer’s website and find the device in support. The support menu contains a driver for any model and all nodes. The second option is to install a special program. It scans the laptop and automatically downloads all drivers. This is convenient from the point of view of optimizing the process, and also allows you to update the software for those nodes that are running. An example of such a program is DriverPack Solution. knows how to work online or offline. In the latter case, you will need to download it first, the volume is about 10 GB.

Missing sound

What to do if after some time the sound on the laptop disappears. The reasons for this may be different. an operating system error, a laptop malfunction, speaker breakdown, and others.

First of all, you need to check if everything is included as needed. If the sound is output to external speakers, then we check if they are plugged into the outlet, if the speakers on the keyboard are turned on and if they are properly connected to the laptop.

If the problem persists, then we try to restart the OS or roll it back to a working state. This is true if the sound disappeared after installing new software. You can restore the system using a special service. start. all programs. standard. service. system restore. The second option is to use the manufacturer’s proprietary utilities, such as are available from HP, Lenovo, Asus and Acer. The most extreme option is to roll back the system to a working state. This can help clean up the local C drive completely and eliminate user programs, but it can sometimes dramatically improve the health and performance of your laptop.

In order to carry out the recovery, you must perform the following steps:

  • Options.
  • Updates and security.
  • Recovery.
  • Rollback to an earlier build.
  • Select the required item.

In this type of system rollback, it is possible to fix the latest changes without deleting user data, settings and data. The second option is to return the system to its original state, that is, at the time of purchase. In this case, everything will be deleted and, if the hard disk is split into two or more local ones, everything will return to its original state. This method is good in the case when the system does not work well, and you cannot reinstall Windows for some reason. The process takes a long time, which is important for Honor before resetting. You cannot interrupt the procedure, serious failures may occur.

The sound may also disappear after cleaning the laptop from dust. Chances are good that not all devices were connected during assembly. The situation should be corrected by disassembling the device and checking the connection points.

Sound problems may be caused by a BIOS failure and will need to be reset. To enter this program when turning on the laptop, you must press the Del button or the F button, for different brands everything is individual and the BIOS entry on an ASUS laptop may differ from Lenovo. The reset itself is carried out in the Exit. Load Setup Defaults menu. A confirmation window will open. Agree and log out. Then we load the laptop and see if the desired effect has been achieved.

Sometimes it happens that the sound quality on a laptop is downright bad. The reason may be a non-working driver, codecs, or incorrect configuration of the playback device. The driver was discussed above. The lack of a codec can lead to the fact that the music or movie does not play correctly, the sound lags or stutters. We fix this by installing codecs. At the moment, the best option is the K-Lite Codec Pack. A player will be installed with it, but I recommend using PotPlayer for movies. for music Aimp.

The third reason is misconfiguration. By default, in a laptop, sound is output to two channels, which is quite logical. But if a 5.1 system is connected to it, then obviously it will not work correctly. You can configure it directly in the player. Using the example of the same Pot Player, just go to the Audio settings. There will be an equalizer and other settings, as well as the item “speakers”, where you can select the system 2.0, 5.1, etc.

The second option is to download the Realtek HD manager (32 bit. 64 bit) from the Internet and configure it directly in it. When you open this utility, go to the “dynamics” menu and select option 5.1. Here you can also make a few more useful settings that will help you achieve the best sound.

Microphone setup

Any modern laptop has a built-in microphone. It is worth noting that the sound quality is quite mediocre, and those who want to record video or conduct live broadcasts are better off immediately purchasing an external microphone that connects to a special connector.

Adjusting the microphone volume is carried out through all the same sound settings menu, only now we are interested in the “recording devices” item. Here you can switch between the standard and external microphones, adjust their volume and make other settings.

Another way to set up the microphone is directly in skype. Today, the average user turns on the microphone only during a video call, and Skype is most often used for this purpose. It has an item in the settings that allows you to adjust the sound level, in addition, if the program is installed for the first time, then at the first start it will also offer to configure the microphone and camera.

This completes the audio setup process in Windows 10, however, users may experience problems. And we will talk about them below.

The Windows operating system with each new version becomes more and more simple, even for unprepared laptop owners. Setting up here is usually straightforward, and in most cases not even required. But if some difficulties still arise, then above I described all the possible nuances and subtleties. Also, if you encounter problems, I recommend reading my other articles dedicated directly to troubleshooting sound problems. There is no need to be afraid of Windows 10, it is quite friendly and in most cases will save users from mistakes, but if there are doubts and concerns, then you can carry out the setup under the supervision of knowledgeable people who will help and fix if something is done wrong.
