    Some time ago, playing with one of the smartphones, I was not happy with the fact that an SD memory card can only be formatted with the FAT file system.

    This solution has some disadvantages. the FAT file system has many limitations when it comes to data storage.

    It is not necessary to download very large files to a smartphone or keep them there, hundreds of gigabytes. this happens quite rarely, but the lack of many permissions in the FAT file system does not allow saving data on SD cards that it uses.

    Smartphones with Android 6.0 installed can format SD cards as internal storage thanks to the Adoptable Storage mechanism introduced in this version.

    This can also be done on Android 7.0, but, for example, on Android 5.1, this procedure will not work, since when this version was released, the function to make an Android SD card as internal memory was not yet implemented.

    Therefore, I decided to check what happens if the SD memory card is made the main one on Android and what exactly this can bring.

    Transferring applications while formatting SD card as internal memory

    If you make an SD card as internal memory, then you will lose access to this really internal phone memory.

    To illustrate this a little better, let’s take an example. In this case, the internal memory in the phone has 16 GB, of which 12 GB is allocated for the / data / partition.

    The flash drive has 2 GB. After formatting, the system will see only 2 GB, and not as it would logically suggest 18 GB.

    It is impossible to connect these two components unless you format the SD card in a standard way using the FAT file system.

    The principle of the mechanism is to make an SD card on Android as an internal memory

    During the formatting of the SD card as internal memory, you will be given the information that this flash drive cannot be used on a device other than the device on which the process was performed.

    Such card will be formatted with EXT4 file system and data will be encrypted.

    Transferring data from an SD card to the internal memory of a smartphone

    In case you were disappointed with all this Adoptable Storage mechanism, and this does not suit you, but you have already transferred the data to the SD card, you can easily cancel the whole process and transfer data from the flash drive to the internal memory of the smartphone.

    Just go to Settings = File storage = Internal storage. There, in the menu at the top right, select “Transfer data” or something like that.

    Only you can inadvertently lead to such a situation when the amount of data transferred from the flash drive will be close to or greater than the size of the target space on the internal memory of the smartphone in the data section. Therefore, pay attention to how much data you will transfer.

    You can still unmount a USB flash drive formatted as internal system memory. However, this is not recommended.

    The process is pretty simple, but there are a few things you need to keep track of. After installing the flash drive in the slot of the smartphone, Android should provide information about the detection of such a media and provide formatting options for the SD card, or simply go to the SD card settings.

    In this case, the flash drive is formatted in the traditional way and automatically becomes active in the system.
