How to install Windows 10 on a laptop

How Windows 10 Pro works on a budget laptop

Recently I hear and read a lot of complaints about Windows 10. Some users complain about poor system performance on old hardware, as well as on low-power laptops, such as my ASUS R540SA, which has now become my. I have been interested in this question for a very long time and now I am ready to share my answer with you.

For almost a week now I have been working with a new laptop every day: I write articles, make presentations, communicate on social networks, read news on portals, etc.

Of course, I don’t play it, I rarely play games at all. I can say with full responsibility that the laptop copes with its task perfectly. Yes, it is slower than the Surface Pro 3, yes, it lacks RAM and a not very smart processor, but it is worth the money. In the current economic crisis, if you set it up correctly and DO NOT expect something supernatural from it, then you can easily buy a budget laptop for home use and study. Windows 10 works great on it and copes with all the tasks usually necessary for the user. It is important to properly configure the system, not to load programs from unfamiliar resources, and not to search for drivers and utilities. And then using Windows 10 will only bring joy.

How to install Windows 10 on a laptop without an operating system

Recently, there has been a lot of controversy that Windows 10 does not work very well on weak hardware, that you often have to install drivers yourself, etc. The other day I was convinced of exactly the opposite and I want to share this with you.

Windows 10 activation with a Windows 8 license key

As I said above, after installation, the Desktop opened, the system is working fine, but you need to activate it. This can be done in two ways: when the system asks you to enter the key during activation itself (I just skipped this item) or through Options-Update and Security-Activation. Since I did not have a Windows 10 activation key in my presence, I decided to try to activate the OS using a Windows 8 activation key, which was quietly waiting for its time for 3 years. I read that there is such a way, but I had to check.

To my surprise, everything went smoothly and without surprises. Literally a minute later, my Windows 10 Pro was activated, which was more eloquently written in the Activation section. That is, there is also this method of activating Windows 10. How long this loophole will exist, I do not know, but it saved me a decent amount.

A little about the laptop Asus R540SA

Despite its budget price, the laptop looks pretty stylish. A dark chocolate lid made from durable plastic and a light brown body look pretty good together. I was struck by the lightness of the laptop, only 1.9 kg, and the thickness of the case is 25.4 mm, which is very unusual for budget laptops. Therefore, it is very lightweight and easy to carry. It would seem, what can you expect from a laptop for 6000 hryvnia? But it is equipped with all the connectors you need to work. Here they are all located on the left side of the case: a 3.5 mm headphone jack, one USB 2.0, 3.0 port and also a new USB Type-C connector, which is quite rare on laptops in this price segment. Nearby are HDMI, VGA and LAN RJ-45 connectors, that is, you can connect to the Internet Not only wirelessly, since the laptop is equipped with a Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n module, but also use a wired one, which I am sure will please many, because lately manufacturers for some reason in budget laptops prefer to get rid of this connector.

Also ASUS R540SA Bluetooth 4.0 module, which allows data transfer between devices at speeds up to 1 Mbit / s.

Particularly noteworthy is the island-style keyboard, which allows you to quickly and easily type text, and do not risk making mistakes when pressing the keys, and a rather sensitive touchpad with an increased area that supports some of the gestures. Of course, expect that the most modern filling will be inserted into such a laptop, you should not.

The 15.6-inch ASUS R540SA has a resolution of 1366 × 768, standard for an inexpensive laptop and a glossy surface, although it does not glare very much in the sun, which makes it comfortable to work behind it.

It is worth noting that the developers from ASUS were able to implement even in such an entry-level laptop a whole range of software and hardware designed to improve the sound quality. Watching movies, TV shows, clips and listening to music on it is equally fun. He will definitely work out his money in this regard. But with the camera for video calls in them everything is sad: it is only 0.3 megapixel resolution in our time. For me, such a camera is no longer very pleasant and convenient.

It is even worse with performance and memory. I understand that for such a price it is still divine, but still. The laptop is powered by a dual-core Intel Celeron processor with a maximum clock speed of 1.6 GHz (2.16 GHz in Turbo Boost mode), 2 GB of RAM and integrated Intel HD Graphics. The processor is built on a modern 14-nm process technology, thanks to which it does NOT heat up and has low power consumption. Okay, mid-range processor, but in 2016 2GB of RAM is very small. I’m thinking of adding some memory, if the plugin is not soldered to the motherboard. It is worth mentioning that it supports low voltage DDR3L 1.35V mode instead of 1.5V, which are usually in DDR3 format.

The laptop has a non-removable lithium-ion battery, which will give you the opportunity to work up to 4 hours according to the manufacturer’s assurance. I can say from personal experience that it works no pain up to 3 hours.

As you can see, I have a very mid-range laptop and still without any operating system, the installation of which I want to tell you further.

Installing Windows 10 Pro

Above, I already wrote that I have not been installing the OS on such laptops for a long time, so it was very interesting how exactly the new Windows 10 will cope with this task. I will, with your permission, omit the details of preparing the Windows 10 ISO image. I have already written about this many times in my articles. I will only note that once again I was convinced that no extraneous utility, except for MediaCreationTool, is simply not needed. She does an excellent job of installing OS.

Since my laptop is completely naked and there is nothing on it, my first step was naturally to look into the BIOS. I have already written and discussed this many times. I will only allow myself to post a picture with possible key combinations for entering BIOS for almost all laptops.

Entering the same BIOS, our main and only task is in the BOOT section, in which it is easy to navigate using the up and down, left and right buttons, find here your bootable USB flash drive, which do not forget to insert into the laptop USB connector. Now you need to put it in the priority of booting the system using the same up and down keys, then press the F10 key and Enter. We kindly request that you DO NOT press anything else in the BIOS or change anything.

You will understand that the download has started when you see the page with the choice of the interface language, country and version of the operating system. That is, the procedure is In fact similar to a clean installation of Windows 10. But I have one nuance, in the solution of which I want to tell you. When choosing a disk for installing the operating system, it turned out that I could not do this, since my disk partitions are in MBR format, and GPT is required for installation. Many people face this problem, so I think it is necessary to describe ways to solve it.

You can solve the problems of converting MBR and GPT partitions using the command line, which can be opened with the ShiftF10 keyset. You will need to launch the diskpart utility, then enter the List disk command to display a list of physical disks connected to the computer. Next, select the desired disk from the list that appears with the select disk N command, where N is the number of your disk that you want to convert. It needs to be cleaned up by entering the clean command. It remains to enter the command convert gpt and the disk is ready to install the operating system. In the same way, you can convert from GPT to MBR by changing the last word when converting. I also want to note that in recent years I have stopped partitioning the hard drive into separate partitions. Once I asked this question on the Microsoft forum, to which I received an explanation that new HDD / SSD does NOT require special partitioning. If HDD disks are usually partitioned, but SSD disks are NOT recommended by many manufacturers to partition. We anticipate your reaction to this phrase and therefore I draw your attention to the fact that it is NOT recommended, and does not mean NOT. It all depends on your personal wishes and needs. Everything works fine for me without dividing into sections and I have never had force majeure circumstances.

READ  How to connect the Internet via WI-FI on a laptop

I was very pleased that the installation took me NOT more than 40 minutes. Just answer the questions and click on. There is one observation: recently, when installing Windows 10, the system asks you to enter the PIN code of the router instead of the WI-FI password, which can be easily found on the body of your device. I do not know what this is connected with, but the fact remains. And I highly recommend that you have access to the Internet when installing Windows 10. The reason for this request is very prosaic: if there is an Internet connection, then Windows 10 installs the drivers by itself, providing a digital signature. Simply put, you don’t have to dig around the manufacturers’ websites to find the right drivers. Forget about it if you bought a new laptop, even without the operating system installed.

After a while, the desktop will open and all the pre-installed programs and applications from Microsoft will be loaded into your laptop, that is, you can safely use your device.

Benefits of using Windows 10

Let’s try to answer the most important question: is it worth installing a fresh version of the operating system from Microsoft? You will NOT come across any stunning or revolutionary innovations in comparison with 8.1. However, in every component the operating system has improved both in speed and controllability. Here are just five points that any laptop user might be interested in.

  • The most important news for all those who have taken hostility to the “tiles” of the eighth version. the return of the familiar desktop “Start” menu. It has become much smarter and more convenient to use. To run any program, you just need to type the first couple of letters of its name. Live tiles are NOT gone, they have moved to the Start menu bar.
  • Significantly improved Mail and Calendar application will finally allow you to fully work with mail in standard Windows applications.
  • New Edge browser is much faster and smarter than its slow predecessor IE.
  • The setup menu became clear to the user. A short list of the main points, with large, understandable icons. But the main achievement is a convenient search for settings. Just write what you need and get an approximate list of settings that will help you.
  • Thought-out and improved file synchronization with OneDrive cloud storage and smartphones under all popular mobile OS.

And this is not a complete list of all the updates and innovations. So let’s start installing. A step-by-step guide will help you understand all the main points of this process and do everything yourself.

Of course, the system will continue to work, but there will be some restrictions on changing color settings and desktop wallpaper.

For security reasons, it is of course recommended to use licensed versions.

When buying a laptop, it is desirable to have preinstalled Windows.

Licensed operating system provides greater security.

other methods

In addition to the above option for creating an installation flash drive or disk, there are several more popular ways to implement this procedure.

If for some reason the method with the “Media Creation Tool” does not suit you or you already have a ready-made ISO image of the required operating system, then using the Rufus program to create a bootable USB flash drive is very simple.

Select a flash drive or disk in the “Device” item. At the bottom of the program window, we find “Create bootable disk”.

Select the location of the Windows 10 ISO image by calling up the disk image. Press “Start” and wait for the end of the recording.

A bootable flash drive in this program is created simply. you select the medium to which the ISO image will be written. The item of the required product is checked.

Clicked on the button with “three dots” next to this item, select the source on which the image we need is located.

Create a boot disk

Despite the predominant use of USB media to install the operating system, the installation disc can be quite a useful thing.

If flash drives are regularly overwritten and constantly in use, then the image of the operating system on the disk can lie and wait in the wings.

It can be useful Not only for actions to restore the system or reset the password, but also for installing Windows 10 on a new one.

The boot disk is created in a similar way. Only when selecting removable media in the menu, select NOT a USB device, but an ISO file. How to install Windows 10 on a laptop. from a disk or from a flash drive is a purely individual matter.

You are definitely taking risks, Installing the “tenth” operating system on an old laptop.

Read what other users of your model, who have installed Windows 10, write on the network. And decide for yourself.

At least an hour will be needed for older laptops with a conventional 5400 rpm HDD.

The process will go through the process faster on an SSD drive, and it will take about half an hour.

Of course, the amount of installation time directly depends on the speed of the Internet connection and the drive system.

Start Menu

It was the start screen of Windows 8 that was the reason for such a rejection of this operating system, although it itself was very good.

This was noted by many users who could get used to the new menu. That is why the developer focuses so much on the new launch.

The start menu now combines both the start from Windows 7 and the start screen from the next, eighth version.

Revamped Start Menu

The updated default start menu is represented by a panel divided into parts.

On the left are displayed:

  • List of frequently used applications;
  • The All Applications list, which displays all your programs. (Sorted alphabetically)
  • Conductor;
  • Computer restart or shutdown button.

They are sorted into groups. They are simply docked in the menu, and with the right mouse button you can change the size of the tiles, disable their updating.

Benefits of Windows 10

Many users believe that the new operating system is a success. This became possible because this time Microsoft approached development from a slightly different angle.

Thanks to the presented Windows Insider program, ordinary users were able to express their opinion about the product.

Microsoft did take it into account in Certain Aspects of the Operating System.

In terms of performance, the new Windows certainly surpassed all of its predecessors.

Windows Insider Program

If you are a fan of new products, then this parameter will be very interesting for you! It allows users to be among the first to try out new features introduced by Microsoft.

To do this, open the Update & Security menu, open the Windows Insider Program tab and click Get Started.

Following further prompts from Microsoft, set the options that you would like to see on your PC.

Applications and features

One of the most popular built-in utilities aimed at managing all programs and applications installed on our computers.

Have you ever faced applications that struggle for supremacy when opening a particular file format? We had to and, unfortunately, sometimes it can be very annoying. However, before letting users fall into despair, Microsoft came to the rescue and introduced a useful Default Apps feature. With it, you can easily set up programs once and for all, which will open only certain types of files, and not interfere with the work with others.

The Startup tab remains equally important. After all, as you can imagine, the number of applications that run together with the operating system directly affects its performance. With this parameter you can enable and disable autostart of any program you are interested in.

Game settings

We left this section for last, because it belongs to the hobby section and, often, not as much in demand as the basic PC setup for working conditions.

Nevertheless, computer games are gaining more and more popularity, the audience of connoisseurs is growing and Windows cannot stand aside, and not create comfortable gaming conditions for its users.

Game menu

Customize keyboard shortcuts that are convenient for you and take interesting screenshots of your favorite gaming moments. Or maybe you made an incredible Fragmovie and want to share it with your friends? Record video using built-in Windows tools!

Game DVR

In simple terms, this setting gives the user the ability to auto-record game sessions. There is no more need to press extra buttons. Windows will record your game by itself from the moment you entered it until the moment you left.

Allows you to enable Microsoft’s anti-cheat system. It is optional and, at the moment, it is difficult to imagine a game in which such a Windows function could be useful.

Perhaps the most creative part of customizing any computer is personalizing it. Don’t like monotony? You can always set up a slideshow of desktop images, which will not let even the most serious critic get bored. And the possibilities of Windows 10 do not end there.!

Want to change the background color? Change your operating system’s sore blue to charcoal gray or even pink.

You can find this and many other settings in the Personalization menu.

Start Menu

All Windows personalization settings are very easy to understand, however, we recommend that you pay special attention to the Start menu. If you wish, you can configure the operating system to display more tiles than originally presented. In this case, Windows will become something like the old Windows 8.

The Start option lets you customize the number of tiles, the list of apps available and the ones you’ve recently installed, frequently used programs, and many other useful features.

Task bar

In the Taskbar tab, you can always set the options for its display:

Hide and Deploy Utility Settings in Desktop or Tablet Mode.

The size of the buttons used (regular, small or large).

Taskbar location.

The notification area allows the user to determine which icons should be on it and makes it possible to easily keep the workspace clean.

In this article, we reviewed a large number of useful settings that can facilitate the process of installing and getting started inside the Windows operating system. However, the mission of Starus Recovery does NOT end there. we strive to continue to share with you effective advice that can help both in your daily work with a PC and in a professional office environment.

Quick installation of Windows 10

Contrary to popular belief that the process of installing an operating system is long and tedious, this is not entirely true, especially if you are using an SSD. Connect a boot disk or USB flash drive to the laptop and press the power key to turn it on.

Note: The process of installing Windows on a mobile PC is not much different from that on a desktop PC. Some points can be swapped, however, you will get a clear idea of your next steps.

You will be greeted by the Windows Installation Wizard. Enter your geolocation and Confirm the correct keyboard layout selected.

Network connection

At this stage, the installer will offer to connect to the wireless network. We recommend that you complete this step, as in this case Windows may involve fresh additions in the installation process. Nonetheless. If you have Wi-Fi or for some reason do not want to connect to the network immediately, you can skip the item.

License agreement

Wait for the operating system installer to complete the quick settings and read the license agreement, which, of course, no one will read :).

Computer control circuit

Now Windows will offer to choose exactly how you plan to use the operating system: for personal use or for managing an organization. We recommend choosing the first option.

This step will require you to log in with your Microsoft account. If you have NOT created it before, register. Those who have an account from the days of older versions of Windows can get personalized OS settings according to the old data. This is a great way to save some time when setting up a new computer.

Two-factor authentication

If you use this account protection, you will need to enter a text code after entering your account password. Perhaps you think this is unnecessary and just a waste of time. However, such a slight inconvenience allows you to significantly protect yourself and your data.

Face recognition function

If you are the proud owner of a laptop that supports Windows Hello, the installer will prompt you to customize it. It will allow you to enable the face recognition service to simplify registration in the operating system.

A simple yet effective way to keep your data safe. Enter the PIN, which is required for user authorization.

At this point, Microsoft will offer you personal privacy settings. I usually don’t bother with geolocation and other tracking functions, however some users may not like them. You can always enable or disable them if you want.

Wait for the installation process to complete.

System settings

Convenient battery level tracking and energy management. By clicking on the battery icon located in the right corner, you can always adjust the operating mode of your mobile PC depending on your needs:

install, windows, laptop

1) Energy saving.

3) High performance.

In the Power and Hibernate settings tab, you can easily configure how long Windows should be in a working state before going to sleep, whether on AC or on battery power.

Don’t like annoying system messages? In the Notifications & Actions tab, you can always turn off Microsoft Suggested Tips and Tricks.

The well-known sound mixer allows you to adjust the volume settings for each application separately.

Let’s say some program works too loudly and its intrusive sound does not give you the opportunity to comfortably watch a video from youtube. Mute it with the mixer and focus on what matters most.

Account management

Account management is a kind of command post with which you can work with a large number of simultaneously functioning accounts. There are not many fundamental characteristics in it, however, let’s focus on some.

E-mail address; app accounts

A handy utility that allows you to group all your mailboxes, thus saving you from having to visit various resources. You can check all the suites in the built-in Microsoft application. Mail.

Login options

In this window, you can configure the Windows Hello service, which works by recognizing the user’s face, change the password or PIN code of the computer.

Family and other people

A useful option if you are NOT the only PC user. Set it up if a child uses a computer and needs his own personal desktop.
