Additional ways to find out which card using Windows
In addition to the methods already described, in Windows 10, 8 and Windows 7 there are additional system tools that allow you to get information about the model and manufacturer of the card, which can be useful in some cases (for example, if access to the device manager is blocked by the administrator).
Viewing Card Information in DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag)
All modern versions of Windows have installed and or another version of DirectX components designed to work with graphics and sound in programs and games.
These components include a diagnostic tool (dxdiag.Exe) that allows you to find out which card is on your computer or laptop. To use the tool, follow these SIMple steps:
- Press the WinR keys on your keyboard and type dxdiag into the Run window.
- After downloading the diagnostic tool, go to the “Display” tab.
The specified tab will indicate the model of the card (or, more precisely, the graphics chip used on it), information about the drivers and memory (in my case, for some reason, it is displayed incorrectly). Not so long ago, I wrote on how to correctly install or update drivers on a card, also slightly touching on the question of how, in fact, to find out which card is installed in a computer or laptop.

How to find out the card model if the computer or laptop won’t turn on
One of the possible options is the need to determine which card on the computer or laptop does NOT show signs of life. In this situation, all that can be done (except for the option of installing the card in another computer) is to study the markings or, in the case of an integrated adapter, to study the processor specifications.
Desktop cards usually have markings on the “flat” side of the sticker to identify the chip used on the side. If there is a clear marking, as in the photo below, then the manufacturer’s model identifier may also be present there, which can be entered in a search on the Internet and most likely the first results will contain information about what kind of card it is.
To find out which card is installed in your laptop, provided that it does not turn on, the easiest way is to search for the specifications of your laptop model on the Internet, they should contain such information.
If we are talking about identifying a laptop card by marking, it is more difficult here: it can only be viewed on the graphics chip, and in order to get to it, you will need to remove the cooling system and remove the thermal paste (which I do not recommend doing this, for those who are not sure that knows how to do it). On the chip, you will see a marking something like the photo.
If you search the Internet for the identifier marked in the photos, the very first results will tell you what kind of chip it is, as in the following screenshot.
Note: the same markings are on the chips of desktop cards, and you will also have to “get to” them by removing the cooling system.
For integrated graphics (built-in cards), everything is easier. just search the Internet for the specifications of your processor model of your computer or laptop, the information, among other things, will include information about the integrated graphics used (see screenshot below).
How to find out the card model using Windows Device Manager
The first thing to try to see which card is on the computer is to go to the device manager and check the information there.
The fastest way to do this in Windows 10, 8, Windows 7 and Windows XP is to press the Win R keys (where Win is the OS logo key) and enter the command devmgmt.Msc. Another option is to right-click on “My Computer”, select “Properties” and launch the Device Manager from the “Hardware” tab.
In Windows 10, the “Device Manager” item is also available in the context menu of the Start button.
Most likely, in the list of devices you will see the “adapters” section, and when you open it, you will see your card model. As I already wrote, even if the adapter was detected correctly after reinstalling Windows, for its full operation, you should still install the official drivers instead of those provided by Microsoft.
However, another option is also possible: the adapters tab will display “Standard VGA graphics adapter”, or, in the case of Windows XP. “controller (VGA-compatible)” in the “Other devices” list. This means that the card was not detected and Windows does not know which drivers to use for it. I’ll have to find out the most.
Using the System Information Tool
Another Windows utility that allows you to get information about the card is “System Information”. It starts in a SIMilar way: press the WinR keys and enter MSInfo32.
In the system information window, go to the “Components”. “Display” section, where in the “Name” field it will be displayed which adapter is used in your system.
Note: MSInfo32 does not correctly display the memory of the card if it is more than 2 GB. This is a Microsoft confirmed issue.
Device detection using AIDA64 software
Another good way to get complete information about the hardware of your computer is to use the AIDA64 program (which replaced the previously popular Everest). With this program you can not only learn about your card, but also many other hardware characteristics of your computer and laptop. Despite the fact that AIDA64 is worthy of a separate review, here we will talk about it only in the context of this manual. You can download AIDA64 for free on the developer’s website http://www.Aida64.com.
The program, in general, is paid, but 30 days (albeit with some restrictions) works great and in order to determine the card, a trial version is quite enough.
After starting, open the “Computer” section, then. “Summary information”, and find the item “Display” in the list. There you can see the model of your card.
Find out which card using Device ID (equipment identifier)
The first method, which most often works, is to identify the installed card using the equipment ID.
In Device Manager, right-click on the unknown VGA adapter and select Properties. After that, go to the “Details” tab, and in the “Property” field, select “Equipment ID”.
After that, copy any of the values to the clipboard (by right-clicking and selecting the appropriate menu item), The key for us are the values of two parameters in the first part of the identifier. VEN and DEV, which designate, respectively, the manufacturer and the same device.
After that, the easiest way to determine what kind of card model it is is to go to the site http://devid.info/ru and enter VEN and DEV from the device ID in the upper field.
As a result, you will receive information about the adapter itself, as well as the ability to download drivers for it. However, I recommend downloading drivers from the official website of NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, especially since now you know which card you have.

There are other ways to identify your adapter: for example, when automatically installing drivers using Driver Pack Solution, the card is also detected, although I do not recommend this method. One way or another, in most situations, the methods described above will be quite enough for the set goal.
Find out the laptop model: ten available ways
To prevent compatibility issues when replacing components or connecting new equipment, you need to know the laptop model. Several proven ways will be considered below, thanks to which the question of how to find out the laptop model will cease to be difficult for you.
Using software tools
If the information you are interested in is NOT indicated either on the case or on the battery, then you can resort to software methods to determine the exact model of the laptop. Let’s try to do it through the command line:
- Click WinR.
- Enter the request “cmd”.
- Enter “wmic csproduct get name”.
A model of your laptop will appear in the Windows interpreter window. you just have to rewrite it or remember it. If you are not friendly with the command line, or just want to double-check the information, look at your laptop model in the System Information window.
- Click WinR.
- Enter “MSInfo32”.
- See the terms “Manufacturer” and “Model”.
The manufacturer line indicates a specific brand. Sony Vaio, Dell, Lenovo. The model is indicated by numbers and Latin letters. Here you need to be careful: within the series, laptop models may differ in one sign.
Since we have gone through the system utilities, the DirectX diagnostic tool will not pass by. Despite the implicit attitude to the question of determining the laptop model, here you can also find all the necessary information:
- Click WinR.
- Enter “dxdiag”.
- See the terms “Manufacturer” and “Model”.
These are proven options, working on laptops of all manufacturers, whether they are the mainstream Samsung or the rarer MSI. There are other ways: for example, sometimes the information about the laptop is pinned in the “System Properties” section. To open it:
- Right click on “Computer”.
- Select “Properties”.
- Find the term “Model”.
Note: This method does not work on all laptops. For example, Asus with Windows 10 installed in the system properties does not contain such information.
Another option is to look at the laptop information in the BIOS. Reboot the laptop and press Del (maybe another key) until the Basic I / O system window appears. There should be an “Info” tab, inside which basic information about the device is indicated.
Laptop case, stickers, battery
There is little hope for packaging from a laptop or some documents. usually all this is thrown away immediately after buying a laptop. But if you still have the instruction manual, you can see the information in it in the laptop.
A more realistic way is to find stickers on the front or bottom of your laptop. They contain complete information about the device, including the manufacturer, series and model. For example, Acer Aspire 5745G.
If the stickers are torn off, try looking at the model on the laptop battery. Flip it over and find two latches (maybe one). Slide them to the open position and remove the cover to remove the battery. The manufacturer (e.g. HP or DNS) and the series and model will be written on the battery.
Computer health monitoring utilities

- Download and install the program.
- Run HWMonitor.
