Recall that our laptop uses a 512 GB WDC PC SN730 SSD. This is an NVMe drive installed in an M.2 slot and connected to an internal PCIe x4 port.

The WDC PC SN730 performs well in our benchmarks and is one of the fastest drives we’ve seen in a laptop. Its linear read and write speeds are very high, in the region of 2.5 GB / s. Thus, we can reasonably expect that a fast SSD will somewhat mask the weak processor performance. Note that by default the available SSD capacity is split into two logical drives (82 390 GB), which is very inconvenient (although this option is better for backing up the system partition). Unfortunately, the utilities we use do not yet “know” the AMD platform very well, and they could not determine the fan speed in the laptop.

In general, the laptop cooler copes with the task of cooling the components completely, overheating and throttling are not observed in any load scenario. But, of course, the components do not hold the rated frequencies under load: the steady-state processor frequency was only 2.85 GHz, and when the load on the video card was added, it was 2.1 GHz, while the integrated video accelerator “alone” worked at 1 GHz. (close to the nominal 1.2 GHz), but under load on the processor it dropped to about 500 MHz. The consumption of the Ryzen 5 3500U APU under load in this case reaches 18-19 W, so if the noise level is not high, the laptop should be “free” a little faster than its classmates.

Below are thermal images taken after long-term operation of the laptop under maximum load on the CPU and GPU:

Working with the keyboard is not very comfortable under maximum load, as the space under the left wrist gets noticeably warm. Holding the laptop on your lap is also unpleasant, as the left knee can feel significant heat from the underside of the laptop. Note the significant heating of the screen matrix (top image, top right), which is not very good.

Configuration and equipment

So far, only a few Huawei laptops are presented in Russia (all are of the MateBook line), most of them have only one modification, there are not even modifications that differ only in the color of the case. It is probably worth mentioning that the 15.6-inch model of the MateBook D15 is also based on the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor and is generally close in configuration to the MateBook D14, only the battery there is much less capacious. We received a laptop from a preliminary delivery for testing, it was not equipped with either a box or, what is incomparably more important, a power adapter. True, the adapter in this case is completely replaceable, since a standard solution with a USB Type-C connector and a separate USB cable (Type-C-Type-C) is used, and not with a proprietary plug. And we had the necessary USB cable in the kit: really thick and long, it will be convenient to charge with it. The cable even has a Velcro strap. typical of laptop adapters.

Noise level

We measure the noise level in a special soundproofed and semi-muffled chamber. In this case, the microphone of the sound level meter is positioned relative to the laptop so as to simulate the typical position of the user’s head: the screen is tilted back 45 degrees, the microphone axis coincides with the normal emanating from the center of the screen, the front end of the microphone is at a distance of 50 cm from the plane of the screen, the microphone is directed towards the screen The load is created using the powerMax program, the screen brightness is set to maximum, the room temperature is maintained at 24 degrees, but the laptop is not specially blown, so the air temperature in the immediate vicinity may be higher. To estimate the real consumption, we also give (for some modes) the consumption from the mains (the battery is pre-charged to 100%):

If the laptop is not loaded at all, then its cooling system works in passive mode, that is, silently. However, practice has shown that the slightest load makes the fans rotate, and the noise from the cooling system is already becoming noticeable. In the case of a heavy load on the video card, the noise from the cooling system is moderate, while when only the processor is loaded, the cooling system subjectively works and is completely quiet. If the laptop is lying on the table, then the noise from the ventilation system is not at all annoying, but if you hold it on the weight or on your knees, then some unpleasant buzz appears.

For a subjective assessment of the noise level, we use the following scale:

From 40 dBA and more noise, from our point of view, very high, long-term work with a laptop is difficult, from 35 to 40 dBA noise level is high, but tolerable, from 30 to 35 dBA noise is clearly audible, from 25 to 30 dBA noise from the system cooling will not stand out much against the background of typical sounds surrounding a user in an office with several employees and working computers, somewhere from 20 to 25 dBA the laptop can be called very quiet, below 20 dBA. relatively silent. The scale, of course, is very arbitrary and does not take into account the individual characteristics of the user and the nature of the sound.

Screen

The Huawei MateBook D14 laptop uses a 14-inch IPS-matrix BOE TV140FHM-NH1 with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 (MonInfo report).

The outer surface of the matrix is ​​black, hard and semi-matt (the specularity is well expressed). There is no special anti-reflective coating or filter, and there is no air gap. With AC or battery power and manual brightness control (there is no automatic adjustment by the light sensor), its maximum value was 274 cd / m² (in the center of the screen on a white background). Note that by default, the screen brightness is noticeably reduced in the case of dark images, but this behavior can be disabled in the graphics core settings. The maximum brightness is not very high. However, if you avoid direct sunlight, then even this value allows you to somehow use the laptop outdoors, even on a sunny summer day.

To assess the screen readability outdoors, we use the following criteria obtained from testing screens in real conditions:

These criteria are very conditional and, possibly, will be revised as data accumulates. Note that some improvement in readability can occur if the matrix has some transreflective properties (part of the light is reflected from the substrate, and the picture in the light is visible even with the backlight turned off). Also, glossy matrices, even in direct sunlight, can sometimes be rotated so that something fairly dark and uniform is reflected in them (on a clear day, this is, for example, the sky), which will improve readability, while matte matrices need to be blocked from Sveta. In rooms with bright artificial light (about 500 lx), you can work more or less comfortably even with a maximum screen brightness of 50 cd / m2 and below, that is, in these conditions, the maximum brightness is not an important value.

Let’s go back to the screen of the laptop under test. If the brightness setting is 0%, the brightness is reduced to 3.2 cd / m². Thus, in complete darkness, the brightness of its screen can be lowered to a comfortable level.

The brightness is regulated using PWM, but the modulation frequency is very high, about 6 kHz, so no flickering is visible under any circumstances, and the presence of modulation is not detected in the stroboscopic effect test. Focusing on the surface of the screen revealed chaotically located micro-defects of the surface, which are responsible for the matte properties themselves:

The grain of these defects is several times smaller than the size of the subpixels (the scale of these two photographs is approximately the same), therefore, focusing on microdefects and “jumping” of focus across subpixels when changing the angle of view are weak, because of this, there is no “crystal” effect.

We measured brightness at 25 screen dots, spaced 1/6 of the screen width and height (screen borders not included). The contrast was calculated as the ratio of the brightness of the fields at the measured points:

If we step back from the edges, then the uniformity of the white field is very good, and the black field and, as a result, the contrast is much worse. Contrast, by modern standards, is typical for this type of matrix. The photo below gives an idea of ​​the distribution of the brightness of the black field over the screen area:

It can be seen that the black field in places (mostly closer to the lower edge) is slightly lightened. However, the unevenness of the black illumination is visible only in very dark scenes and in almost complete darkness, it should not be considered a significant drawback.

The screen has good viewing angles without a significant decrease in brightness and color shift, even with large gaze deviations from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades (but IPS matrices in monitors are usually better in this regard). When deviated diagonally, the black field is strongly lightened and acquires a red-violet tint.

The response time for the transition black-white-black is 30 ms (17 ms on 13 ms off), the transition between gray tones in total (from hue to hue and back) takes an average of 39 ms. The matrix is ​​not fast, there is no overclocking.

We determined the total output delay from switching the video buffer pages to the start of displaying the image on the screen (recall that it depends on the peculiarities of the Windows OS and the video card, and not only on the display). At 60 Hz refresh rate (and no other value is available), the latency is 10 ms. This is a small delay, it is absolutely not felt when working on a PC, but in very dynamic games in games, it may lead to some decrease in performance.

Next, we measured the brightness of 256 shades of gray (0, 0, 0 to 255, 255, 255) at the default settings. The graph below shows the increase (not an absolute value!) In brightness between adjacent semitones:

The growth of the increase in brightness is more or less uniform, and each next shade is significantly brighter than the previous one. In the darkest area, all shades are well distinguished:

The approximation of the resulting gamma curve gave an exponent of 2.16, which is close to the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma curve deviates slightly from the approximating power function:

Therefore, visually, the colors on this screen are pale. Below is the spectrum for the white field (white line) superimposed on the spectra of the red, green and blue fields (lines of the corresponding colors):

Such a spectrum with a relatively narrow peak in blue and with wide humps of green and red is typical for screens that use white LED backlighting with a blue emitter and a yellow phosphor. The spectra show that the matrix filters significantly mix the components together, which narrows the color gamut.

The balance of shades on the gray scale is good (graphs Uncorrected in the figures below), since the color temperature is slightly higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of the absolute black body (ΔE) is below 3, which is considered an excellent indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE vary little from shade to shade. this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Additionally, by moving the dot on the color wheel in the display settings, we tried to correct the color balance. The result is shown in the graphs above with the signature Corr.

The correction in the white field was successful, but in the grayscale the ΔE became higher. Usually this behavior can be corrected by lowering the value of the Contrast setting, but it is not. As a result, the color balance adjustment function is useless.

Enabling the Eye Comfort option reduces the intensity of the blue component; how much. you can adjust the slider (in Windows 10, there is a corresponding setting). See the iPad Pro 9.7 ″ article for why this might be useful. In any case, when working at a laptop at night, it is better to lower the screen brightness to a minimum, but still comfortable level. There is no point in yellowing the picture.

Let’s summarize. The screen of this notebook has a maximum brightness high enough (up to 274 cd / m²) so that the device can be used outdoors on a bright day, out of direct sunlight. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level (up to 3.2 cd / m²). The advantages of the screen include a low output delay, no flicker, good uniformity of the white field, good color balance. The disadvantages are low stability of black to deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen and a narrow color gamut. Overall screen quality is not outstanding.

Traditionally, the audio system of a laptop is based on the Realtek codec, and sound is output through 2 speakers (in this case, they are located almost on the bottom of the case, in the front part). Subjectively, the speaker system of the Huawei MateBook D14 is of average volume, without obvious defects in sound even at maximum volume, without obvious features. We measured the maximum volume of the built-in speakers when playing a sound file with pink noise, and it was 72.3 dBA. this is really an average level.

Hardware testing of the audio path of the headphone output using the Creative E-MU 0202 sound card demonstrated the usual high performance:

The Dolby Atmos utility allows you to switch sound profiles, use a parametric equalizer, enable surround sound, and automatically adjust the sound volume. We did not find a clear benefit from its use.

Software

The laptop ships with Windows 10 Home edition with no third-party apps preinstalled. The only proprietary Huawei utility (PC Manager) does not display low-level information about the computer, does not allow you to select a performance profile or adjust the operation of the cooling system. But it contains all the typical features that modern laptops offer: check for hardware problems and driver updates, contact technical support and read basic information about common problems.

Of the more interesting settings, we note the ability to switch the functions of the upper row keys on the keyboard (which of them work with pressing Fn, and which directly) and enable the battery life extension mode.

PC Manager has an interesting function for pairing a laptop with a smartphone. This should allow for quick backup of mobile photos and videos, as well as control the smartphone from a computer. Unfortunately, only fresh Huawei or Honor models are suitable for pairing (at least with EMUI 9.0 or Magic UI 2.0), which the authors of the article did not have at hand. By the time of testing the Honor MagicBook 14 laptop, we will try to get a suitable smartphone and reveal this topic in the review.

Launched PC Manager creates an additional Notification Center in Windows (with a tray icon), where it stores, among other things, links to the last documents saved on the computer and the history of the contents of the clipboard, and also allows you to launch various utilities, from screen capture to a calculator. I liked the screen capture utility because, in addition to capturing the actual image of the selected area, it immediately recognizes and displays next to all text strings that it managed to find in this area. it can be useful, for example, for translation.
