Connecting a computer to a Wi-Fi router is akin to a simple cable one: everything happens as simple and fast as possible. This only requires an adapter. In laptops, it is already built into the system, but for a PC you will have to purchase a separate module. There are two types of such devices. internal, connected to the PCI-E connectors on the motherboard, and external, for the USB port.

After installing the module and determining it by the operating system, a new network connection will appear in the notification area, through which we will receive the Internet, just click on it and click “Connect”.

Of course, an appropriate Wi-Fi network must be configured on the router. How to do this can be found in the instructions supplied with the router. Setting up modern devices, in most cases, will not cause any difficulties.

Wi-Fi networks, for all their merits, can be quite capricious. This is expressed in connection breaks, lack of connection with devices and the Internet. The reasons are different. from driver problems to incorrect network settings.

Ethernet

This type of Internet service provision does not provide for special requirements for access. login and password. In this case, the cable is directly connected to the LAN connector on the computer or router.

In most cases, with such a connection, additional steps are not required, but there is one exception. when the provider provides the subscriber with a separate IP address and its own DNS server. This data must be registered in the network settings in Windows. The same will have to be done if the provider has changed, that is, find out which IP the previous one provided and the current provider gives.

    First, we need to get to the corresponding settings block. Click RMB on the network icon in the notification area and go to the “Network Control Center”.

Next, follow the link “Changing adapter parameters”.

Here we click RMB on “Ethernet” and press the “Properties” button.

Now you need to configure the parameters of the TCP / IP protocol version 4. Select it in the list of components and go to properties.

We check the IP and DNS data. If the provider provides a dynamic IP address, then all switches should be in the “Automatic” position.

If additional parameters are received from him, then we enter them in the appropriate fields and click OK. This completes the setup, you can use the network.

Ethernet has one peculiarity. the connection is always active. In order to be able to disable it manually and do it quickly (by default, you will have to go to the network settings every time), create a shortcut on the desktop.

Now, if the Internet is connected, then when the shortcut is launched, we will see the “Status-Ethernet” window, in which you can find some information and disconnect from the network. To re-connect, just run the shortcut again and everything will happen automatically.

Mobile phone

If it is not possible to connect your PC to the Internet using the above methods, you can use your smartphone as a Wi-Fi access point or a regular USB modem. In the first case, a wireless adapter is required (see above), and in the second, a USB cable.

For normal operation of the access point, you need to make a number of settings in the phone menu or use a special program.

If the computer is not equipped with a wireless module, then there is only one option. to use the phone as a regular modem.

    Go to the network connection settings and select the access point and modem control section. In other versions, this block can be located in the section “System Hotspot”, as well as “Networks. Shared modem and networks”.

    PPPOE can be controlled in the same way as Ethernet. using a shortcut.

    VPN

    VPN is a virtual private network or simply a “tunnel” through which some ISPs distribute the Internet. This method is the most reliable from a security point of view. In this case, you also need to manually create a connection and access data.

      Go to “Network parameters” by clicking on the network icon.

    Open the “VPN” section and create a new connection.

    Enter the authentication data provided by the provider and click “Save”.

    To connect to the network, open the list again by clicking on the icon and select the created connection.

    A window of parameters will open, in which you will have to click on our connection again, and then on the button “Connect”.

    A really good question that probably interests many. For example, you have a laptop with Wi-Fi connected to the Internet via cable. You have, for example, another laptop or netbook. And you want to connect your new device to the Internet via Wi-Fi. You don’t have a Wi-Fi router yet, well, you haven’t purchased it yet, or you don’t want to install and configure it at all.

    In such a situation, you can use a laptop connected to the Internet as a Wi-Fi router (access point).     We continue to configure the laptop, which we will use as an access point. We need to create a connection to which another device will connect.

    Click the “Add” button.

    Select Create a computer-to-computer network. Such a connection can be used not only to connect to the Internet, but also to create a regular local network via Wi-Fi, for example, to exchange files.     In the next window you can familiarize yourself with the functions of this connection, and click “Next”.

    Next, we need to specify the name of the network. This name (SSID) will be displayed on devices that will connect to this access point. You can enter the name you want.

    If you want your network to be password protected, then I advise you to leave WPA2-Personal. If you want the network to be open, then select “No authentication”.

    Security key. enter the password for the Wi-Fi network. Just choose harder than mine I am so, for example.

    I advise you to check the box next to “Save this network settings”. Click “Next”.

    Then we see information about the network we created, namely the name and password (although it is hidden). But the most important thing we need to do in this window is to click the “Enable Internet Connection Sharing” button. If you do not press this button, then when you connect to the network on this laptop, there will be only a local network, and the Internet on the connected devices will not work.

    We have configured our laptop that will distribute the Internet. Now let’s try to connect another laptop to it, I have a Toshiba Satellite L300.

    Connecting the laptop to the created wireless connection

    Turn on Wi-Fi on the laptop and click on the status of the Internet connection in the notification panel. As you can see in the screenshot below, there is our network, which I named “f1comp”. Click on it, then click on the “Connect” button.

    A window will appear asking for the security key for the network that we created above. Enter the password, if you have set it, and click “Ok”.

    Attention! At this moment, a window will appear on the computer that distributes the Internet, in which you need to select “Public network”. You can also select “Home network”, but when I selected “Home network” my laptop did not connect to the Internet, but this is most likely due to the fact that NOD32 Smart Security 6 blocked the connection.

    Then on the laptop that we connect to the Internet, I have a Toshiba, the status should appear that the laptop is connected to the “f1comp” network we created and there is access to the Internet.

    All friends, this is a victory :)! We just turned the laptop into a Wi-Fi router and connected another laptop to it.

    What do we need

    To connect a second computer to the network, you may need a second network card.

    If the Internet does not come to you via a network card (for example, via a USB modem), then you do not need to buy another card. One is enough, which is already (hopefully) in your computer.

    This computer will serve as a link between the Internet and all other computers on the network. In order for the internet to work, you have to keep it turned on. Turn off this “gateway”. the Internet will be lost for everyone. Such computers in various firms often act as a filter, speed regulator, it cuts off access to unwanted sites, etc. It is essentially called a “proxy server”. For home use, proxying functions are not required. We just need to transfer the Internet to other consumers.

    So what do we need.

    • Free network card (if the existing network card is occupied by the Internet) to connect other computers.

    How to connect a second computer to the Internet

    If you have wireless network cards (Wi-Fi) on one and on the second computer, then read this article.

    Possible problems:

    In this article, we did not consider setting up a firewall (firewall) to open access due to the many subtleties of individual settings for different firewalls of different antiviruses.     Plugging the cable directly into a laptop or PC

    Let’s go directly to connecting your computer or laptop to the Internet via cable. Let’s start with a direct connection without using a router. If you have only one device at home to which you need to connect a network, then this method is quite suitable, it can also be useful for testing the Internet connection in case of failures, because allows you to exclude intermediate nodes from the chain, such as a router.

    First you need to find the same cable that was started by the provider. There are 3 options:

      A long twisted-pair cable is brought into the apartment, which can be twisted into a coil. An RJ-45 connector is crimped at the end of the cable. It looks like this:

    In the first case, the cable itself must be connected directly to the computer. To connect to an outlet or other device, you will need a special patch cord of the required length, which has RJ-45 male connectors on both sides. The patch cord can be “straight” or “crossover”, for the purposes described in the article, a regular “straight” cable of the UTP-5 category is suitable.

    If you still need to register a static IP

  • Open “Configure adapter parameters”;
  • Right-click on the name of the network adapter and click “Properties”;
  • Highlight the IP Version 4 (TCP / IPv4) option and click Properties;

  • Set the radio button to “Use the following IP address” and specify the settings provided by your ISP. As DNS, you can specify the public Google servers. 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4;

  • Providers

    Today there are hundreds of providers providing dedicated Internet channel service for the home. Each region has both its own local providers and national ones, for example Beeline, Rostelecom, TTK and others.

    Static or dynamic IP

    When concluding a contract with a provider, the choice of the type of IP address is fixed. static (permanent) or dynamic (which changes over time). I note right away that at the moment most operators provide a static IP using the DHCP protocol, which means that you do not need to manually write network settings, they will be installed automatically by the provider, while the IP address will not change, your device will be bound by MAC- address. You can clarify this question in the provider’s support service.

    To check if your computer has received an IP address allocated by your ISP, you need to do the following:

      Right click on the network connection icon in the taskbar;

    Click “Open” Network and Internet Settings “;

  • Go to the Ethernet tab;
  • Click on the Network icon. Nearby there should be a note that “Connection established”, if this is not the case, then it is necessary to check the cable;
  • On the Networking tab, scroll down to the IP Settings section. Make sure the IP Assignment is set to Automatic (DHCP);
  • In the Properties section, opposite the IPv4 address item, there is a value consisting of 4 numbers separated by a dot.
  • What exactly should be the IP address depends on your ISP (remember, we are talking about a direct connection without a router), on whether it provides a “white ip” or an address from its internal network. The main thing to pay attention to is that the IP address should not be of the form 169.254.x.x. This value indicates that the network is physically working, but the computer cannot obtain an IP address via DHCP. If you see this value, try updating the IP manually:

    • Call the “Run” window with the Win R keyboard shortcut;
    • Enter cmd for command line calls;

    Type or paste the ipconfig / release command and press Enter;

    Enter the command ipconfig / renew and press Enter;

    If the received IP still starts with 169, or you see the correct address in the properties of the network adapter, but the Internet does not work, I recommend contacting the support of your Internet provider. There are too many network connectivity problems to cover in one article.

    How to connect the Internet via a cable from a router

    Using a router is the most common scheme for organizing a home Internet. If there is a Wi-Fi module in the router, it will allow several devices to connect to the network both wirelessly and wired at the same time. Typically, a router has a WAN or Internet port for connecting to the provider’s “external” network and one or more LAN ports for connecting local network devices. Sometimes the WAN port is one of the LAN ports. Refer to your router’s documentation to determine the exact matching of the connectors.

    So, in order to connect the Internet via a cable from the router to the computer, you need:

    • Connect the provider’s cable to the WAN port on the router;
    • Connect a patch cord of sufficient length to one of the LAN ports on the router;
    • Connect patch cord to PC or laptop.

    Cable agreement with provider

    After the provider has been selected, it is necessary to conclude an agreement with him for the provision of services, for which you contact the subscriber service of the corresponding operator and make an application for connection.

    Before signing the contract, carefully read all the points, whether they suit you in a particular situation. For example, it happens that when the contract is closed before a certain date (usually 1 year from the date of connection), the operator obliges the subscriber to pay a certain amount every month before the expiration of this period. Therefore, carefully study all the conditions and do not agree if they do not suit you.

    After concluding the contract, save its number and technical support phone for communication in case of accidents.

    Connecting laptop to PC

    using a router

    And so, as I said above, this method will be relevant if your laptops are connected to a Wi-Fi network, the computer is connected to the router with a cable.

    There are no problems with access (i.e. there are no triangles with exclamation marks or red crosses on the network icon).

    Note: I will assume that Windows 10 is installed on both PCs and laptops (in principle, with Windows 7/8, almost all actions are the same).

    How to connect laptop to computer

    Of course. Most likely you already have a router at home, thanks to which laptops (like PCs) are connected to the Internet (plus they are all already connected to a local network).

    And in this case, it will be enough just to share the necessary folders.

    However, be that as it may, in the article I will consider 2 options for possible events.

    STEP 2

    Then you need to go to the Windows control panel in the tab: “Network and Internet \ Network and Sharing Center” and click on the link to change additional. sharing options. See screenshot below.

    Next, you need to enable network discovery, share printers and files, and disable password protection (by default, Windows 10 prohibits everything!). over, you need to do this for three profiles: private, guest, all networks.

    Of course, such network parameters must be set on each of the laptops and PCs on the network.

    The connection process itself does not represent anything complicated: it is enough to connect the cable to the network card of the PC (laptop). Usually, at the same time, the LED next to the network port starts blinking (then everything is fine).

    Step 3. setting up Wi-Fi

    If you use the setup wizard, you will also go through this step. The main thing here is to set the name of your Wi-Fi network. make it clear to yourself. And very importantly. change the password to the wireless network so that no neighbor can connect.

    Algorithm

    I reduced the entire algorithm of interaction with the new router to the following steps:

    Step 3. computer

    Installation

    So, you have unpacked a brand new router, it’s time to define a place for it in the house. Unfortunately, the range of the router is limited, so the best way to install it is to place it in the middle of the apartment:

    If you have one room, no problem. But if there is a lot. put a router and walk around the apartment with a laptop or phone, measuring the signal strength so that there is enough everywhere. Choose the best point, and in the future there will be less hassle.

    Another problem is to position it so that the provider’s cable can reach your router without destroying the apartment. Usually, when laying the Internet, the master can immediately tell where to stretch the wire. this is done just for better signal coverage at home. But if it already lies, you will have to adjust to it.
