3G / 4G modem
All mobile Internet providers provide users with modems equipped with built-in memory with software written into it. drivers and a client application. This allows you to connect to the network without unnecessary gestures. When connecting such a modem to the USB port of a computer, you need to install the program and run it. If autorun of external devices is disabled in the operating system and the installer does not start automatically, then you need to go to the “Computer” folder, find a disk with the corresponding icon, open it and run the installer manually.
To access the Internet, just click the “Connect” button in the program.
If you do not want to constantly use the client application, then you can use the automatically created connection.
In the event that a new item does not appear in the list, then you can create a connection manually.
- In the “Browser Properties” “Control Panel” on the “Connections” tab, click the “Add” button.
Enter your username and password. In most cases, the operator’s name is entered in both fields. For example, “beeline”. The dialed number is 99 #. After all the settings, click “Connect”.
Working with such a connection in Windows 10 is exactly the same as in the case of VPN, that is, through the settings window.
In Windows 7, things are a little simpler again. Open the list, click on the name, and then click the “Connect” button.
5 ways to connect your computer to the Internet
Connecting a computer to a Wi-Fi router is akin to a simple cable one: everything happens as simple and fast as possible. This only requires an adapter. In laptops, it is already built into the system, but for a PC you will have to purchase a separate module. There are two types of such devices. internal, connected to the PCI-E connectors on the motherboard, and external, for the USB port.
After installing the module and determining it by the operating system, a new network connection will appear in the notification area, through which we will receive the Internet, just click on it and click “Connect”.
Of course, an appropriate Wi-Fi network must be configured on the router. How to do this can be found in the instructions supplied with the router. Setting up modern devices, in most cases, will not cause any difficulties.
Wi-Fi networks, for all their merits, can be quite capricious. This is expressed in connection breaks, lack of connection with devices and the Internet. The reasons are different. from driver problems to incorrect network settings.
This type of Internet service provision does not provide for special requirements for access. login and password. In this case, the cable is directly connected to the LAN connector on the computer or router.
In most cases, with such a connection, additional steps are not required, but there is one exception. when the provider provides the subscriber with a separate IP address and its own DNS server. This data must be registered in the network settings in Windows. The same will have to be done if the provider has changed, that is, find out which IP the previous one provided and the current provider gives.
- First, we need to get to the corresponding settings block. Click RMB on the network icon in the notification area and go to the “Network Control Center”.
Next, follow the link “Changing adapter parameters”.
Here we click RMB on “Ethernet” and press the “Properties” button.
Now you need to configure the parameters of the TCP / IP protocol version 4. Select it in the list of components and go to properties.
We check the IP and DNS data. If the provider provides a dynamic IP address, then all switches should be in the “Automatic” position.
If additional parameters are received from him, then we enter them in the appropriate fields and click OK. This completes the setup, you can use the network.
Ethernet has one peculiarity. the connection is always active. In order to be able to disable it manually and do it quickly (by default, you will have to go to the network settings every time), create a shortcut on the desktop.
Now, if the Internet is connected, then when the shortcut is launched, we will see the “Status-Ethernet” window, in which you can find some information and disconnect from the network. To re-connect, just run the shortcut again and everything will happen automatically.
If it is not possible to connect your PC to the Internet using the above methods, you can use your smartphone as a Wi-Fi access point or a regular USB modem. In the first case, a wireless adapter is required (see above), and in the second, a USB cable.
For normal operation of the access point, you need to make a number of settings in the phone menu or use a special program.
If the computer is not equipped with a wireless module, then there is only one option. to use the phone as a regular modem.
- Go to the network connection settings and select the access point and modem control section. In other versions, this block can be located in the section “System Hotspot”, as well as “Networks. Shared modem and networks”.
Next, put a daw next to the “USB-modem” item.
PPPOE is a high-speed connection, the only difference from the previous one is the need to independently create a connection with the specified login and password provided by the provider. However, there is one more feature: PPPOE can compress and encrypt data. As already mentioned, access to the network still occurs using a cable connected to a PC or router.
Here we select the first item. “Internet connection” and click “Next”.
In the next window, press the big button with the name “High Speed (with PPPOE)”.
We enter the login and password received from the provider, for convenience we save the password, set the name and general access, and then click “Connect”. If everything is done correctly, then in a few seconds the Internet will work.
PPPOE can be controlled in the same way as Ethernet. using a shortcut.
VPN is a virtual private network or simply a “tunnel” through which some ISPs distribute the Internet. This method is the most reliable from a security point of view. In this case, you also need to manually create a connection and access data.
- Go to “Network parameters” by clicking on the network icon.
Open the “VPN” section and create a new connection.
Enter the authentication data provided by the provider and click “Save”.
To connect to the network, open the list again by clicking on the icon and select the created connection.
A window of parameters will open, in which you will have to click on our connection again, and then on the button “Connect”.
This was an instruction for Windows 10, in the “seven” everything happens a little differently.
- To create a connection, go to “Control Panel”. “Browser Options”.
Next, on the “Connection” tab, click on the “Add VPN” button.
In the first window, enter the address.
In the second. login, password and click “Connect”.
Subsequently, to connect, you need to perform just a couple of actions: open the list of connections, select the one you need and click “Connect”.
We connect the Internet
There are several ways to connect to the global network, it all depends on your capabilities and (or) needs.
- Cable connection. This is the most common and simplest option. The provider in this case provides the subscriber with a line. a cable that runs into the room, which is connected to a PC or router. There are three types of such connections. regular, PPPoE and VPN.
- Wireless. Here, access to the network is carried out through a Wi-Fi router, to which the same provider’s cable is connected. Mobile 3G / 4G Internet can also be attributed to wireless methods.
- We will separately discuss the possibility of using a mobile phone as a modem or access point.
We use a laptop as an Internet access point (Wi-Fi router). Setting up a computer-to-computer Wi-Fi connection
Hello. Recently I saw a comment on the site asking how to use a laptop as a Wi-Fi router. The laptop is connected to the Internet via cable and how to make it so that it distributes the Internet via Wi-Fi to other devices.
After seeing this comment, and remembering that it really is possible to create a computer-to-computer connection over Wi-Fi, I decided that this is a great topic for a new article. Here is the comment itself:
In general, I want to use the laptop as a Wi-Fi router (the laptop itself is connected via a regular cable). Through a computer-to-computer connection, I want to connect a beech to it, so that I can use the Internet on a laptop and on no beech. Is this possible? The problem is that I connected everything and the icon on the taskbar shows on the netbook that there is Internet access. but when I open the browser (I have an explorer and google chrome), then it does not enter the Internet, and I cannot understand what the problem is??
A really good question that probably interests many. For example, you have a laptop with Wi-Fi connected to the Internet via cable. You have, for example, another laptop or netbook. And you want to connect your new device to the Internet via Wi-Fi. You don’t have a Wi-Fi router yet, well, you haven’t purchased it yet, or you don’t want to install and configure it at all.
In such a situation, you can use a laptop connected to the Internet as a Wi-Fi router (access point). The Wi-Fi adapter, which is in the notebook, can work not only for reception, but also for transmitting a signal. You just need to make some settings, create a computer-to-computer connection and the laptop will distribute the Internet via Wi-Fi.
For the experiment and the quality of this article, I have two laptops ASUS K56cm and Toshiba Satellite L300. We will connect ASUS to the Internet via a cable, it will distribute the Internet with us, it will play the role of a Wi-Fi router. And we will connect the Toshiba laptop to ASUS via Wi-Fi and use the Internet on it. over, on a laptop that will work as an access point, the Internet should also work. Let’s get down to business.
Setting up a laptop that will distribute Wi-Fi
First, let’s set up an access point. ASUS K56cm laptop, which will distribute Wi-Fi, I have already connected to the Internet.
And on the notification panel, the status of the Internet connection should look like this:
If everything is like mine, then you can start setting up the connection.
Setting up a computer-to-computer connection
We continue to configure the laptop, which we will use as an access point. We need to create a connection to which another device will connect.
Right click on the Internet connection status and select “Network and Sharing Center”.
On the left click on “Manage Wireless Networks”.
Click the “Add” button.
Select Create a computer-to-computer network. Such a connection can be used not only to connect to the Internet, but also to create a regular local network via Wi-Fi, for example, to exchange files. I wrote about how to set up a local network via a router in the article How to set up a local network via a Wi-Fi router? Detailed instructions on the example of TP-Link TL-WR841N.
In the next window you can familiarize yourself with the functions of this connection, and click “Next”.
Next, we need to specify the name of the network. This name (SSID) will be displayed on devices that will connect to this access point. You can enter the name you want.
If you want your network to be password protected, then I advise you to leave WPA2-Personal. If you want the network to be open, then select “No authentication”.
Security key. enter the password for the Wi-Fi network. Just choose harder than mine I am so, for example.
I advise you to check the box next to “Save this network settings”. Click “Next”.
Then we see information about the network we created, namely the name and password (although it is hidden). But the most important thing we need to do in this window is to click the “Enable Internet Connection Sharing” button. If you do not press this button, then when you connect to the network on this laptop, there will be only a local network, and the Internet on the connected devices will not work.
As you will see the inscription “Internet Connection Sharing is enabled”, the window can be closed.
We have configured our laptop that will distribute the Internet. Now let’s try to connect another laptop to it, I have a Toshiba Satellite L300.
Connecting the laptop to the created wireless connection
Turn on Wi-Fi on the laptop and click on the status of the Internet connection in the notification panel. As you can see in the screenshot below, there is our network, which I named “f1comp”. Click on it, then click on the “Connect” button.
A window will appear asking for the security key for the network that we created above. Enter the password, if you have set it, and click “Ok”.
Attention! At this moment, a window will appear on the computer that distributes the Internet, in which you need to select “Public network”. You can also select “Home network”, but when I selected “Home network” my laptop did not connect to the Internet, but this is most likely due to the fact that NOD32 Smart Security 6 blocked the connection.
Then on the laptop that we connect to the Internet, I have a Toshiba, the status should appear that the laptop is connected to the “f1comp” network we created and there is access to the Internet.
All friends, this is a victory :)! We just turned the laptop into a Wi-Fi router and connected another laptop to it.
As you probably understood, I wrote this article (like almost everything on this site) and simultaneously carried out the settings on two laptops. So all the information has been tested in practice. As you can see, everything worked for me, and I hope that you also learned everything from you.
As always, you can leave your questions in the comments to this article. Good luck.
How to use a Samsung phone as a modem
To distribute the Internet, Samsung gadgets can use the Smart Switch (Kies) program. Install it on your smartphone and connect it to your PC. New hardware from Samsung appears on the PC monitor in Windows Device Manager.
Next, in the smartphone settings, select the “Connections” tab. “Modem and access point”. “USB modem”.
After activating the mobile modem, a notification will appear on the computer that the Internet is available.
How to use your smartphone as a modem
Any modern smartphone that has access to the Internet can become its source and distribute the network over Wi-Fi or over a wire. As a rule, gadgets already have suitable drivers for turning into an access point, and you only need to find the necessary parameters in the settings of your phone.
Important: when using mobile internet, don’t forget about traffic. If you often connect your gadget as a modem, switch to a tariff that offers a large package of gigabytes. The quality and reliability of communication will also depend on the speed of the Internet and the location of your provider’s towers.
How to connect an Android smartphone as a USB tethering
When you connect your smartphone to your computer, a menu appears on the gadget’s desktop where you can select the connection mode. charging or transferring files. USB tethering options are hidden in the phone settings and are not set by default, so you have to find them manually.
As an example, we used a smartphone on Android 9 in the EMUI shell, but just in case, we gave the names of menu items in other versions of Android.
- Connect your phone to PC via USB. If this is a new device, wait until the drivers are installed.
- Open your smartphone settings. In the section “Wireless networks” (“Network”) find the item “Modem mode” (“Modem and access point”).
- Activate USB tethering. A new network with Internet access will appear on the computer.
We use the phone as a modem for a computer or laptop
To always have access to the network, you just need to learn how to distribute the Internet from your phone. We tell you how to distribute Wi-Fi from a smartphone and connect the phone as a USB modem.
Have you arrived at the dacha and want to watch a movie on your laptop, but there is no wired Internet? Or maybe your home ISP is having a problem and your PC still needs network access? There is a very simple way out. to use a smartphone as a modem for a computer via USB or Wi-Fi.
How to share Wi-Fi from a smartphone
Another way to use your phone as a modem is to distribute the Internet via Wi-Fi. In this article, we described in detail how to create a hotspot on an Android smartphone. Everything is very simple. on most models, it is enough to open the menu curtain and select the “Access Point” item.
- To configure Wi-Fi, go to the access point settings. for this, tap on the function icon and hold it.
- Set the network name and password, and, if necessary, the type of encryption.
- We also recommend setting a traffic limit that can be used when your smartphone is connected to the network. We remind you that this is a mobile (and often limited and expensive) Internet.
- In addition, the maximum number of possible connected devices should be set so that the network is not overloaded.
Important: in modem or access point mode, the smartphone is discharged faster. Put the gadget on charge or connect it to the powerbank while distributing the Internet.
What do we need
To connect a second computer to the network, you may need a second network card.
If the Internet does not come to you via a network card (for example, via a USB modem), then you do not need to buy another card. One is enough, which is already (hopefully) in your computer.
This computer will serve as a link between the Internet and all other computers on the network. In order for the internet to work, you have to keep it turned on. Turn off this “gateway”. the Internet will be lost for everyone. Such computers in various firms often act as a filter, speed regulator, it cuts off access to unwanted sites, etc. It is essentially called a “proxy server”. For home use, proxying functions are not required. We just need to transfer the Internet to other consumers.
So what do we need.
- Free network card (if the existing network card is occupied by the Internet) to connect other computers.
- A piece of crimped cable, the so-called. patch cord. How to squeeze the patch cord yourself. in this article.
- If there are more than one Internet consumers. 1 switch and patchcords for all other consumers.
How to connect a second computer to the Internet
If you have wireless network cards (Wi-Fi) on one and on the second computer, then read this article.
We are looking for a networked environment. (Start. Network Neighborhood or My Computer. Network Neighborhood). Open Network Connections. (to do this, right-click on My Network Places and select Properties).
2 connections are visible. The first is an internet connection. The second is network connection to other computers.
We need to allow access to the Internet from other computers. To do this, right-click on the Internet connection and select properties. In the tab “Advanced” (for XP) or “Access” (for Windows 7) put a check mark next to the item “Allow access” and uncheck the box “Allow other users to control Internet access”.
We will assume that access has been opened. Now you need to connect another computer.
We choose our second connection. Right click. Properties. In the list we are looking for “Internet Protocol TCP / IP”. Select, click properties.
Fill in the fields in the window according to the picture below. With this computer, everything.
Go to the computer that will connect to the Internet through the gateway.
In the settings of the Network connection, in the same way, we find the “Internet Protocol TCP / IP” and fill in the fields already as in the next picture.
The first field “IP address” can be different. Rather, the last digit may differ. In our case, it is 5. It can be any, except for 1 (already taken by our “gateway”), 0 and 255. That is, any number from 2 to 254. If you plan to connect another computer, then configure it with a different IP. address. For example like this:
It remains only to connect the computer to the gateway (the first computer with the Internet) using a patchcord and try to use the Internet. Should work.
If there are many computers, then we connect all computers to the switch, and the switch is already to the gateway.
On old network cards and some cheap ones for direct connection (computer-to-computer), not a “regular” patchcord, but a “cross-over patchcord” is required. How do they differ and how to make them. read here.
In this article, we did not consider setting up a firewall (firewall) to open access due to the many subtleties of individual settings for different firewalls of different antiviruses. If there is no Internet, try temporarily disabling the firewall. But you still need to configure it. Leaving the network unprotected is not good.
Connecting an Ethernet cable to a computer
Find the network card connector on the PC (it can be built-in or installed as an expansion card);
On a laptop, the RJ-45 connector is located on the side or back panel next to other interfaces, inspect the laptop from all sides.
If you have an RJ-45 socket, plug the other end of the patch cord into it.
If the cable is successfully connected, the LEDs should blink next to the port of the network card.
Plugging the cable directly into a laptop or PC
Let’s go directly to connecting your computer or laptop to the Internet via cable. Let’s start with a direct connection without using a router. If you have only one device at home to which you need to connect a network, then this method is quite suitable, it can also be useful for testing the Internet connection in case of failures, because allows you to exclude intermediate nodes from the chain, such as a router.
First you need to find the same cable that was started by the provider. There are 3 options:
- A long twisted-pair cable is brought into the apartment, which can be twisted into a coil. An RJ-45 connector is crimped at the end of the cable. It looks like this:
Made hidden cable wiring to one of the rooms, where the RJ-45 socket is brought out:
The cable is connected to the provider’s termination device.
In the first case, the cable itself must be connected directly to the computer. To connect to an outlet or other device, you will need a special patch cord of the required length, which has RJ-45 male connectors on both sides. The patch cord can be “straight” or “crossover”, for the purposes described in the article, a regular “straight” cable of the UTP-5 category is suitable.
If you still need to register a static IP
Highlight the IP Version 4 (TCP / IPv4) option and click Properties;
Today there are hundreds of providers providing dedicated Internet channel service for the home. Each region has both its own local providers and national ones, for example Beeline, Rostelecom, TTK and others.
Static or dynamic IP
When concluding a contract with a provider, the choice of the type of IP address is fixed. static (permanent) or dynamic (which changes over time). I note right away that at the moment most operators provide a static IP using the DHCP protocol, which means that you do not need to manually write network settings, they will be installed automatically by the provider, while the IP address will not change, your device will be bound by MAC- address. You can clarify this question in the provider’s support service.
To check if your computer has received an IP address allocated by your ISP, you need to do the following:
- Right click on the network connection icon in the taskbar;
Click “Open” Network and Internet Settings “;
What exactly should be the IP address depends on your ISP (remember, we are talking about a direct connection without a router), on whether it provides a “white ip” or an address from its internal network. The main thing to pay attention to is that the IP address should not be of the form 169.254.x.x. This value indicates that the network is physically working, but the computer cannot obtain an IP address via DHCP. If you see this value, try updating the IP manually:
- Call the “Run” window with the Win R keyboard shortcut;
- Enter cmd for command line calls;
Type or paste the ipconfig / release command and press Enter;
Enter the command ipconfig / renew and press Enter;
If the received IP still starts with 169, or you see the correct address in the properties of the network adapter, but the Internet does not work, I recommend contacting the support of your Internet provider. There are too many network connectivity problems to cover in one article.
How to connect the Internet via a cable from a router
Using a router is the most common scheme for organizing a home Internet. If there is a Wi-Fi module in the router, it will allow several devices to connect to the network both wirelessly and wired at the same time. Typically, a router has a WAN or Internet port for connecting to the provider’s “external” network and one or more LAN ports for connecting local network devices. Sometimes the WAN port is one of the LAN ports. Refer to your router’s documentation to determine the exact matching of the connectors.
So, in order to connect the Internet via a cable from the router to the computer, you need:
- Connect the provider’s cable to the WAN port on the router;
- Connect a patch cord of sufficient length to one of the LAN ports on the router;
- Connect patch cord to PC or laptop.
Cable agreement with provider
After the provider has been selected, it is necessary to conclude an agreement with him for the provision of services, for which you contact the subscriber service of the corresponding operator and make an application for connection.
Before signing the contract, carefully read all the points, whether they suit you in a particular situation. For example, it happens that when the contract is closed before a certain date (usually 1 year from the date of connection), the operator obliges the subscriber to pay a certain amount every month before the expiration of this period. Therefore, carefully study all the conditions and do not agree if they do not suit you.
After concluding the contract, save its number and technical support phone for communication in case of accidents.
Connecting laptop to PC
using a router
And so, as I said above, this method will be relevant if your laptops are connected to a Wi-Fi network, the computer is connected to the router with a cable.
There are no problems with access (i.e. there are no triangles with exclamation marks or red crosses on the network icon).
Note: I will assume that Windows 10 is installed on both PCs and laptops (in principle, with Windows 7/8, almost all actions are the same).
How to connect laptop to computer
Of course. Most likely you already have a router at home, thanks to which laptops (like PCs) are connected to the Internet (plus they are all already connected to a local network).
And in this case, it will be enough just to share the necessary folders.
However, be that as it may, in the article I will consider 2 options for possible events.
Then you need to go to the Windows control panel in the tab: “Network and Internet \ Network and Sharing Center” and click on the link to change additional. sharing options. See screenshot below.
Next, you need to enable network discovery, share printers and files, and disable password protection (by default, Windows 10 prohibits everything!). over, you need to do this for three profiles: private, guest, all networks.
Of course, such network parameters must be set on each of the laptops and PCs on the network.
Well, the final touch. How to find now all those folders and drives that have been shared?
It’s very simple: just open the explorer and click on the “Network” tab. it will display all PCs and laptops in the local network (which are currently turned on).
By clicking on any of them, you will see which folders and drives it has publicly available (in my example, only the “D: \” drive is shared). By going into this folder. you will be able to work with files in the usual way.
And so, first one important note should be made. network cables on sale can be of two types: one for connecting a PC to a PC (or a laptop to a PC), others. to connect a PC (laptop) to a router.
In our case, we need a cross-over network cable (or cross-over cable). For such cables, the yellow and green pairs are swapped at the end connectors (note: for cables for connecting a PC to a router, the colors of the contacts are the same).
The connection process itself does not represent anything complicated: it is enough to connect the cable to the network card of the PC (laptop). Usually, at the same time, the LED next to the network port starts blinking (then everything is fine).
Step 3. setting up Wi-Fi
If you use the setup wizard, you will also go through this step. The main thing here is to set the name of your Wi-Fi network. make it clear to yourself. And very importantly. change the password to the wireless network so that no neighbor can connect.
I reduced the entire algorithm of interaction with the new router to the following steps:
- Installation. we place it in the apartment.
- Connection. this is what our article is about, we will do everything ourselves.
- Setup. enter settings, internet, Wi-Fi, passwords.
Now let’s go over each step briefly, focusing on the connection process. And for those who don’t like reading, there is a cool video:
Step 3. computer
It will not be difficult to find. all ports look the same, tk. go according to one standard. RJ-45:
The same is usually found on laptops. After connecting, the last indicator of interest to us should light up on the router. LAN networks.
If you have several LAN ports, you can connect to any of them. No difference.
As a result, the ports should be clogged something like this:
It is very difficult to be mistaken. We must do everything right the first time. All! You don’t need to connect anything else here, and you can proceed to setting up.
There is another way to connect to the router. via Wi-Fi. Just select ours from the list of active networks, enter the password and that’s it. The network name and password are usually also written on a sticker under the bottom.
So, you have unpacked a brand new router, it’s time to define a place for it in the house. Unfortunately, the range of the router is limited, so the best way to install it is to place it in the middle of the apartment:
If you have one room, no problem. But if there is a lot. put a router and walk around the apartment with a laptop or phone, measuring the signal strength so that there is enough everywhere. Choose the best point, and in the future there will be less hassle.
Another problem is to position it so that the provider’s cable can reach your router without destroying the apartment. Usually, when laying the Internet, the master can immediately tell where to stretch the wire. this is done just for better signal coverage at home. But if it already lies, you will have to adjust to it.
Additionally, you may need to “assemble” the router at this stage. often the antennas go unscrewed, and you would need to fasten them.
Step 2. setting up the internet
And here big discrepancies begin. Once you got into the configuration, look for the setup wizard. He will guide you through the steps and set everything up himself. What is important here is to find an agreement with your provider, where the login and password from the Internet itself go. During the configuration process, you will have to drive them in here. As a result, the router should connect to the Internet.
Setup. very brief
Why very briefly? Because the setup process itself differs from router to router. So if something is not clear. write in the comments, or rather go to the article about setting up your router model on our website. everything will be there in detail and with all the nuances. Below I give a universal algorithm for all models.
So we come to the topic of our article. Let’s take a look at the back panel of the average router in the world:
Pay attention to the 3 main places for us:
- Turn on the power
- We connect the WAN
- Connect LAN
Step 1. entering the panel
First you need to enter the web configurator. The best way is to look under the router and see on the sticker the actual data for entering the control panel, username and password. It looks like this:
If all else fails, go to the following links, one of them should open a window for entering your login and password:
Login and password look on the same sticker, but usually they are standard almost everywhere admin and admin.
