How to connect Wi-Fi to a Wi-Fi router. setting up a wireless Internet

The field of application of computer and mobile technology is expanding, the amount of information for exchange between devices is increasing, therefore, convenience for providing these functions through a network connection is important for users. Of course, this can be done by connecting the devices with a wire. However, in modern conditions, this is considered not a rational solution, since if you have a Wi-Fi router or adapter, you can make a wireless connection.

How to connect a laptop and computer to a router via Wi-Fi

Connecting a laptop, home computer with a Windows operating system, or a TV to a wireless Internet network is possible after installing Wi-Fi, as well as if there is a built-in adapter in the device. All modern technology has such configurations. For older models, you will have to purchase the adapter separately.

The source of the Internet that distributes the network is a router. For a correct connection, you need to find a place where a good signal is provided. Don’t post it:

  • near a cordless telephone, microwave oven, or other devices operating on the same 2.4 GHz frequency as a router;
  • near mirror surfaces;
  • near electrical appliances;
  • at the load-bearing wall.

Additional Information! By default, the laptop’s network adapter is disabled. To check the status and change it, you need to use the key combination. They differ on different models of the computer device. This can be a simultaneous press of “FnF2”, a button with an antenna icon on the keyboard, or a switch on the case.

After making sure that the adapter is in the active position, you need to create a wireless access point. To do this, follow the algorithm:

  • right-click on the connection icon and go to the “Network and Internet settings” section;
  • go to the section of network management and sharing;
  • create a new connection by clicking on the corresponding link;
  • configure the wireless network.

In the process of configuring the network, you need to set parameters such as:

  • the name of the connection, which will be displayed in the corresponding list when available networks are detected;
  • security type. encryption method;
  • security key. login password.

Connecting smartphones and gadgets to the router

Before connecting to Wi-Fi, you need to take into account that the range of the network in which you can connect to it is in the range from several to hundreds of meters. The exact figure of the parameter characterizing the coverage is determined by the signal strength and depends on the router model and the service package provided by the Internet provider.

The performance of the router can also be affected by weather conditions if the connection is made outdoors. The algorithm of actions required to connect to the wireless Internet via Wi-Fi telephone devices with different types and versions of operating systems are almost identical and differ in nuances due to their peculiar functional options.

Important! To reconnect to Wi-Fi and not re-enter access passwords, the first time you connect to the network, you need to activate the option to remember the login ID. It will ensure the correct automatic connection to the wireless Internet when the module is turned on.

Connecting via WPS

The WPS function allows you to quickly resolve the issue of how to connect to Wi-Fi in order to check new equipment or carry out diagnostics after reinstalling the system, camera or other functions. The service is relevant on a trip, being on a train or other transport, when there is no time and opportunity to deal with the tuning nuances.

By using this option, you can save time on setting up the wireless connection, since they are freely available. After receiving and checking it, you can configure the Internet by first opening the browser page and entering information about the standard value of the router’s IP in the fields of the request form.

Connecting via WPS

The latest smartphones are equipped with the option to connect to an available wireless Internet using the WPS connection button on the router. To do this, you need to open the Wi-Fi module in the device and select the format of connecting to the network in the additional functions section, after which the Internet is connected in a simplified format.

Note! The WPS button is located on the body of the device. It is recessed into it and on some models of the device is compatible with the factory reset option. Therefore, when you press it, you should not hold the element for a long time, since all settings will be reset and you will have to re-register everything.

When prompted for a password to connect to the network, the input information must be taken from the bottom of the equipment on the label placed on it. It displays information about the device name, network, MAC address and login information.

The procedure for connecting iOS gadgets to a Wi-Fi router

You can connect to Wi-Fi with a smartphone with the iOS operating system installed through the functionality of the main menu of the device. For this you need:

  • go to the settings terminal;
  • select the appropriate settings options;
  • open the section allowing you to see the connection networks;
  • activate the module by clicking on the slider with the enable command on the button in the subsection of the Wi-Fi wireless connection;
  • select the network to which you plan to connect from the proposed list;
  • enter data to gain access.

How to connect Android devices

In all versions of the Android operating system, the Wi-Fi connection to the phone is carried out in the same way:

  • Go to the settings section.
  • Activating the Wi-Fi option by clicking on the corresponding icon.
  • Familiarization with the list of available networks and selection of the required connection.
  • Password input.

In the latest smartphone models, the procedure is reduced to pressing the Wi-Fi icon on the screen, selecting a network and gaining access to it according to the standard scheme. An alternative is to hold down the settings button in the quick menu.

Smartphone connection

Standard connection option

After installing Wi-Fi, you need to connect it according to the standard scheme:

  • open a tab with a list of available networks;
  • select a personal network and click on it;
  • enter the password in the field allocated for it;
  • click on the “next” button, after which automatic connection will occur.

If the picture with the list is hidden from the user, then connection with the current settings is not possible. To fix the situation, you need to contact a specialist or try to fix the problem yourself. To do this, you need to enable access by holding down the right mouse button, and activate the connection by selecting the enable option in the window that opens.

Connecting to a laptop

If, after all the activities, the Internet is not available, you need to check if the laptop has the necessary network drivers for work. To do this, in the “Task Manager” section of the Control Panel menu, check the subsections that contain information about network adapters. It contains information about the installed Wi-Fi drivers. If they are absent, you need to install the utility from the disk software supplied with the laptop upon sale.

How to connect a computer to a router via a network cable (LAN)?

As a rule, most of the problems arise when connecting to a router over a wireless network. And connecting via a network cable should not cause any difficulties. But, I have already met similar questions several times, and decided to write a small instruction with a photo, in which I will tell you about how to connect a computer (or laptop) to the router using a LAN cable.

And what to write about here, they took a cable, connected it to a router, then to a computer, and everything is ready. But still, it may come in handy for someone. As a rule, modern routers have 4 LAN connectors. This means that you can connect 4 devices via a network cable. And they will all receive Internet from a router, or work in a local network. By the way, read this article on setting up a local network.

We take our network cable, it looks like this (you may have a slightly different one, I will enter a different length):

We connect one end of the cable to the yellow connector (LAN) of our router.

It doesn’t matter which of the four connectors you plug the cable into.

Now we connect the other end of the cable to our computer, or laptop.

This is what the network connector looks like on a computer:

After connecting the network cable, one of the four indicators on the router should light up, which indicate the connection to the LAN connector.

Now we look at the computer screen. If on the notification panel (bottom, right) you see this connection status (as in the screenshot below). then all is well. The internet is already working.

But, in such a seemingly simple way, problems can also arise. Now some of the most popular, we will consider.

Problems connecting the computer to the router via a network cable

After connecting, the status on the notification panel may not change, you will see the computer crossed out with a red cross.

In this case, first of all, you need to check the cable with which you connected the computer to the router. How to do it? You can, for example, take another cable, or the cable through which the Internet goes, directly connect to the computer. If this connection status changes (even if a yellow triangle appears). then the problem is in the cable. Perhaps there is something gone. Just change it.

It is possible that the network card is simply disabled. Let’s check. Go to Control Panel \ Network and Internet \ Network Connections and find Local Area Connection there. If the status is Disabled next to it, then right-click on this connection and select Enable.

If there is no such connection as Local Area Connection at all, then most likely the driver is simply not installed on your network card. Download and install the driver. If there was a disc included with the computer (laptop), then it is most likely that it contains this driver.

Plugged in the cable, but the connection without internet access

And this can be. This problem looks like this:

First, you need to determine what the problem is. This could be due to a problem on the router side. For more on this, see this article.

But I’ll tell you in a simple way. If other devices work normally from this router, and the Internet is on them, then most likely the problem is on the computer itself. This is clear :).

Go to Control Panel \ Network and Internet \ Network Connections again and right-click on Local Area Connection. Select properties. Then select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4)” and click the Properties button again.

Set to get IP and DNS automatically and click OK.

But, do not forget that, for example, there may be technical problems with the network card (perhaps it just burned out) and other very different reasons why a variety of problems may arise.

Here is such an instruction, everything seems to be simple, but it turned out to be not very small. Hope it is useful to someone.

What you need to connect your laptop to the Internet

To connect to the wireless Internet, you need two devices: a router or router and a laptop that has a built-in network adapter or a separate adapter, although many modern laptop models do not need them. Of course, you need a place where the Internet catches. Before buying, it is better to clarify this information in advance.

Positioning and turning on the router

Before answering the question of how to connect to a Wi-Fi router on a laptop, you should consider the places where you should not put the router because of its possible incorrect operation:

  • You cannot place the router near other devices operating at a frequency of 2.4 GHz, that is, you should not put it near a radiotelephone, microwave oven. This rule is explained simply: several devices that work on the same wavelength interfere with each other.
  • It is not recommended to place the router near mirror surfaces. Otherwise, the signal will be lost or will not work well.
  • You cannot put the router where there will be many electrical appliances. It is necessary to minimize the number of nearby devices on the laptop and the network.
  • Do not install the router against a load-bearing wall.

How to connect a laptop to a Wi-Fi router wirelessly

There are often situations where people who have bought a laptop are faced with Internet connection problems. As a rule, this is a simple procedure, but there are some points that can cause difficulties for novice users. details on how to connect a laptop to a Wi-Fi router and the Internet without wires will be described in this article.

Connection problems

There are enough reasons why the laptop does not pick up the signal and does not connect to Wi-Fi. The most common are:

  • The presence of a weak router signal that slows down data transfer, so the router should be positioned correctly.
  • Incorrect router configuration, to resolve the issue with which you should contact the customer support center or the provider company.
  • Failure of the Wi-Fi module on the laptop, to resolve the problem with which, you need to contact the service center.

Also connection problems can be related to:

  • lack of network drivers;
  • disabling Wi-Fi on the laptop case;
  • with the installation of virus software;
  • may be caused by a faulty receiver.

If the laptop does not see only one Wi-Fi network, then the reason may lie in the excessive distance between the laptop and the router, setting the laptop to the range of another Wi-Fi and connecting several wireless networks to one channel.

Often the problem lies in saving power by turning off the Internet. To turn it on, you need to press the button with the radio antenna. Also, the adapter may become disconnected as a result of accidental mechanical action. Internet access may be interrupted due to a router, ISP malfunction, or short circuit. There are often times when the router restricts connections in order to avoid work overload.

In addition to the standard solutions to the problems listed above, you can try:

  • Turn on and restart the router.
  • Change the width of the router channel.
  • Activate WLAN autoconfiguration (subsections in order: “Start”, “Management”, “Services and Applications”, “Autoconfiguration Services”, “Properties”, “General”, “Startup Type” and “Auto Connect”).
  • You can also perform a factory reset.

Driver Verification

If you are not connected to the Internet, then there may be no network drivers. To check this in Windows 10, you need to:

  • Open the “Control Panel” using the start menu.
  • Find “Device Manager”.
  • Check the subsections of the menu with network adapters. Wi-Fi drivers should be highlighted there.
  • If there are no drivers, then they need to be installed using the disk software that came with the laptop.

Checking the Wi-Fi function

Typically, the laptop adapter that is responsible for the network connection is disabled by default. But, just in case, you should check this fact. This can be found out with a special keyboard combination. Depending on the laptop model, this may be Fn F2 or the keys with antenna icons. When you click on them, information on turning on or off the network will be displayed. Some laptop models contain a switch on the case.

Access point creation

There are several steps you can take to create a wireless access point. For Windows 7, the following steps are provided:

  • Using the right mouse button, go to the “Network and Sharing Center”.
  • Select “Setting up a new connection or network”.
  • Click on “Wireless Network Settings”.
  • Set the parameters of the name, security type and security key of the network, where name is the name of the connection, security type is the method of encrypting the transmission of incoming information, and the key is the password.
  • Click on the adapter by going to the grant access menu.
  • Click on the checkbox to allow access to other users.

As a result, the Windows 7 access point will be created.

To connect a laptop running Windows 10 to a wireless network, use the following instructions:

  • Open “Control Panel”.
  • Go to “Network and Sharing Center”.
  • Find and click on the tab for changing adapter parameters located in the menu on the left.
  • Next, find a wireless network. If the picture is hidden, then the connection is not available. To enable access, you need to hold down the right mouse button and select the first enable option.

To connect Wi-Fi with OS 8 or 10, you need to follow these steps:

  • Find a bookmark with a network.
  • Among the available list of networks, find a personal one and click on it.
  • Enter the password, specifying it exactly in the field.

The last step is to click “Next”, and after a moment you can go to the browser and use the network.

What to do if your connection isn’t working?

With connections based on wireless technologies sorted out. Now let’s see what you can do if the created connection does not work. First of all, immediately check the driver of the wireless module on the computer, as well as its state, which should be active in the “Device Manager”. If the module is not active, use its activation via the RMB menu. Once again, make sure that getting addresses in the IPv4 properties is set to automatic. Change the DNS addresses if necessary and make sure the router settings match the type of address you are using (dynamic or static). If all else fails, delete the connection and re-create it.

Of course, it would be nice to check your computer for viruses (just in case, because some threats can just block access to the Internet). For these purposes, it is better to use portable antivirus scanning rather than standard antivirus software. The best option is to boot from a disk or flash drive with the Kaspersky Rescue Disk utility and perform a scan with subsequent neutralization of viruses before starting Windows.

Setting up Wi-Fi for a desktop computer: creating a connection

In principle, setting up a connection on a stationary PC is no different from similar actions on the same laptops. The first step is to enter the “Control Panel” and use the Network and Sharing Management section, which chooses to create a new connection. After that, you will be prompted to select a setting. We proceed from the fact that at the moment you need to install Internet access on the stationary computer.

We select the appropriate item and follow the instructions of the “Master”. Upon completion, in principle, you can use the connection immediately. How to connect a desktop computer to Wi-Fi? Elementary! To do this, click on the wireless connection icon to bring up a list of available networks, select the desired one and connect (remember that the access password has not yet been set).

Basic IPv4 parameters

However, despite the simplicity of the steps performed, it is sometimes advisable to check some additional connection parameters that relate to the IPv4 protocol. A desktop computer or a laptop is used, in this case it does not play any role. These are already system settings.

Using the properties of the created connection, you need to enter the IPv4 settings and check how the addresses are obtained (automatic assignment or manual).

For a wireless connection, only automatic mode should be set, otherwise the connection will simply not work. The maximum that can be changed is only the addresses of the main and alternative DNS server, using as values, say, free combinations from Google based on combinations of eights and fours (and then only for those cases when the connection for some reason does not work ). Also, if such settings are not provided by the provider, be sure to make sure that proxy use is disabled for local addresses.

Setting basic settings on the router

Now, in order to connect a stationary computer to Wi-Fi, you need to set some important parameters on the router. To do this, you need to enter the WAN section.

Most ISPs today provide dynamic addresses to user machines. If this is the case, you just need to select the appropriate type from the drop-down list. In this case, the rest of the parameters will be set automatically.

Do not forget only the point about turning on the signal distribution. In the case of a static IP, the required parameter values and addresses will have to be entered manually. The provider provides them at the conclusion of the contract. After completing the router settings, the changes are saved, after which you will need to configure the connection already on the computer.

How to connect a desktop computer to a Wi-Fi router?

The fact that the technologies of wireless Internet access or the organization of virtual networks are now more popular than ever is probably not worth saying. True, the advantages that they provide to everyone are mostly used mainly by owners of mobile equipment and laptops, in which the presence of appropriate Wi-Fi wireless modules is initially provided. But what is worse than desktop computers, in which such equipment, as a rule, is not initially installed? And connecting a stationary terminal to a wireless network or router can be done, moreover, it is quite simple.

Is it advisable to use a wireless connection on stationary PCs?

And to start considering the main topic is why stationary terminals are not initially equipped with wireless modules. Indeed, many of them surpass both laptops and mobile devices in their basic characteristics. As it is commonly believed, a stationary computer with its configuration was originally designed to solve more complex problems associated with the use of offline applications or with Internet access, but with a higher quality of communication.

This, as well as preventing possible signal loss, for example, due to increased load on the router, can only be achieved with a wired connection, not to mention the speed of Internet access. Thus, the use of a wireless connection on a stationary PC is more likely to be purely aesthetic considerations (especially since you cannot move to another place with a computer, as you can do with a laptop, tablet or phone).

However, as they say, tastes differ. Therefore, let’s still see how to connect a stationary computer to Wi-Fi. There is nothing particularly complicated in this, and the actions performed are absolutely no different from setting up a similar connection on the same laptop. The main condition is the availability of appropriate equipment in the form of a wireless adapter.

Note! You can, of course, connect the router to a stationary computer directly. But what’s the point? After all, this is how the main idea is lost.

Setting up network protection

Now you need to take care of the security of your connection.

You can set the necessary options in the properties of the created network connection on the security tab, where the preferred type of security and encryption (usually WPA2-Personal and AES) is selected from the list, and the desired password for access to the connection is entered.

How to connect a stationary computer to a WI-FI router: logging into the router’s web interface

So, let’s assume that the drivers are installed, the adapter is plugged in and ready to go. At this stage, you need to create and configure a wireless connection. How to connect a router to a stationary computer to make the necessary settings? Thanks to the adapter, this is not a problem.

To enter the web interface of the router, you need to use any browser installed in the system, enter the combination 192.168.1.1 (or 0.1 at the end) in the address bar and enter a login with a password. They are usually the same. admin. The address of the router, as well as the login with the password, can be found on a special nameplate or in the passport of the device.

Manual setting

Well, if there was no automatic setup, then you have to go through the points with the pens. We find the “Network” section and there is an item with the word “WAN”:

There should be similar settings items. Here everything is the same as for automatic configuration, only we ourselves have to choose the type of Internet connection and enter the username / password.

  • Leave “Secondary Connection” “Disabled” or “Dynamic IP”, this is only needed to access the internal network of the provider.
  • Set “Connection Mode” to “Connect Automatically” so that the router connects to the Internet automatically after every reboot.

If the provider requires you to specify the IP address and DNS servers, then this can be done in the Advanced settings, but usually you do not need to do this:

But I have a provider with problematic DNS servers and I register Google’s server: 8.8.4.4, which always works! How does a problematic DNS server manifest itself? This is when not a single site or half of the sites open, but Skype or torrents work without problems! However, if you set the server to Google, then the internal sites of some providers may not open, for example, such as account replenishment and statistics.

It is here, in the manual settings, that you can specify the type of connection. VPN, if you have one. To do this, select “L2TP”, enter the name / password and address of the VPN server (given by the provider). If the IP address, mask, gateway and DNS are provided, then select “Static IP” and enter all the data. Do not forget to check the box for automatic connection at the bottom.

That’s it, save the settings and look for the “Wireless Settings” menu section:

All settings have been described above. For Wi-Fi to work, there must be a check mark “Enable Wireless Router Radio”.

The next item is “Wireless Security”. here we enable encryption, i.e. set up security as already mentioned above:

The configuration of the router is complete! I advise you to save all the parameters from the “System Tools. Backup Restore “. Button “Backup”. saves, “Restore”. restores from a saved file. This will come in handy in case everything suddenly goes to hell and all the settings go off. You can easily recover them from file

Oh yes, I almost forgot, change the default password for entering the admin panel. This is done in the section “System tools. Password “.

How to connect a laptop to WI-FI

In Windows 8/10, you need to click on the icon at the bottom of the screen:

On the right, a panel will exit where you need to select the desired wireless network. Remember we gave the name of the network in English? Here you need to find it. If this is a public institution and you do not know which network to connect to, then choose any one with a higher signal level. When hovering over the network, a hint is displayed whether a password is required or not. If you see something like WPA / WPA2 when you hover over, it means you need a password to connect to a Wi-Fi network.

You can leave the “Connect automatically” checkbox. Next, the system will connect to the router and ask for the Wi-Fi password that we set earlier. If your device supports QSS technology, then you do not have to enter the password, but simply press the button on the router, signed as “QSS”. In this case, the password will be filled in without our participation.!

When the system asks about file sharing, I advise you to select “No, do not enable sharing” if you do not know why you need it:

I made a short video tutorial on how to do this:

In Windows 7 everything is the same, only the icon and the window with the found networks look like a Semyor

Here you can also find the connection you want, click on it and voila.

We connect a home Wi-Fi router and the Internet

To have wireless internet at home, you need a router or Wi-Fi access point. In fact, there is nothing complicated here, but it will take a little care and, possibly, your ISP’s phone number The whole process can be broken down into three stages: physical connection, router setup and computer setup.

How to quickly set up Wi-Fi

It is more complicated here, because all routers are different and the interface can be very different. And Internet settings for providers can also be strikingly different. If you have a TP-Link router or another with the ability to quickly configure, then you are in luck, everything can end very quickly We find in the menu on the left or above the item “Quick Setup” and follow the instructions of the wizard:

I have a 3G router, so I am asked to choose the preferred connection type: 3G or cable. I do not have a 3G modem, so I choose “WAN only”

Next, you are prompted to select the type of Internet connection: PPPoE, Dynamic IP, Static IP or Auto-Detect:

If you do not know what to choose, then try the automatic mode, the router will try to determine the type of connection itself. If it succeeds, the wizard will proceed to the next configuration step, but you may need to enter a username and password (in the case of a PPPoE connection)

or network settings (in case of “Static IP” connection)

All this information should have been given to you by the provider, look carefully in the contract. If the wizard does not manage to determine the connection automatically, then he will have to call the provider and ask, or try by typing, there are not many options, as it were

In the next step, the wizard invites us to turn on the Wi-Fi module:

  • “Wireless Radio”. this is Wi-Fi, should be in the “Enabled” position
  • In the field “Wireless Network Name” enter any name of the point in English
  • Parameters: “Channel”, “Mode”, “Channel Width”, “Max Tx Rate” set as in the screenshot or leave by default.
  • “Wireless Security”. security. Don’t leave Wi-Fi without a password! Not only will everyone use your Internet and download the channel, it will be such a huge, huge hole in your security! Virtually anyone can access all of your personal information. We put the switch in the WPA / WPA2 position and enter a complex password.

A small digression: when everything works, if it turns out that the Internet is working too slowly or there are constant interruptions in work, then try to select “Channel” not “Auto”, but some number from 1 to 13 and save the settings. You can go through all the numbers in search of a suitable one. The fact is that now there is a lot of equipment around, and each device needs its own channel to work. As a result, devices operating on the same channel interfere with each other.

It’s good if you don’t have the cheapest router and it can operate at 5MHz. In this case, there will be a corresponding option to select a frequency of 2.4 or 5 MHz. Much fewer devices operate at this frequency, and therefore the likelihood that someone will interfere is significantly reduced.

Incorrect TCP / IP settings

If you still do not go to the admin panel, then:

  • right-click on the connection icon and select “Properties”
  • find “Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP / IPv4)” and double-click on it
  • In the properties of the protocol, you need to check that the checkboxes were on “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain a DNS server address automatically”
  • Click “OK” two times
  • Now wait 10 seconds and you can check.

Connecting the router to the computer

After you take the router out of the box, you need to connect it to your computer or laptop. By default, I’ll keep in mind that you have regular wired internet.

  • We take out and fasten the antennas
  • Insert the Internet cable into the port signed “WAN”. Usually WAN is highlighted in a different color or stands apart from other 4 or 8 ports
  • The cable that comes with the router is connected with one end to any of the numbered ports of the router (1, 2, 3, 4), and the other end to the Ethernet port of a computer or laptop. It will only be needed for configuration, then you can turn it off.
  • Don’t forget to connect power

How to enter the router settings

After turning on the router, he needs time to boot up and put himself in order. At this time, the front panel lights may come on and off, wait 1 minute. To go to the admin panel of the router, you need to write in the address bar of the browser:

and press “Enter”. Next, you need to enter your username and password, by default:

A small note: the address 192.168.1.1 is used in most routers. If you get the error “Page not found” or “The page does not open”, then try using a different address, for example: 192.168.0.1

If there is an error again, see the correct address on the sticker on the back of the device:

If it is not there, then you need to look at the instructions, which may be on the complete disc, or search the Internet from your phone. The same applies to login (username) and password (password), i.e. not all of them have admin / admin. If the device is used, then maybe someone changed the default parameters. In this case, you need to reset all settings to default. To do this, you need to find the “Reset” hole on the router and press the button inside with a match.

Network cable not connected

Let’s say the login address and username / password are known, but still it is impossible to enter the admin panel due to a network error. Then you need to check the settings of the network card in Windows 7/8/10:

  • We go “Start. Control Panel. Network and Internet. Network and Sharing Center “
  • On the left we find “Change adapter parameters”
  • The “Local Area Connection” connection should NOT be in the “Network cable not connected” status:

If so, then most likely this is the case, i.e. cable not connected, not connected there, or defective.

Also, the status should not be “Disabled”. If so, then right-click on the icon and select “Enable”.

If the router is not in the list, then the laptop does not see the router, and there may be several reasons for this:

The WLAN indicator should either be on or blinking. If it is off, then the router’s Wi-Fi is disabled. Some manufacturers supply their models with an external Wi-Fi power button, but if there is no such button, then you need to connect with a wired connection and turn on Wi-Fi in the settings (more on this later).

Connecting the router to a laptop

Next, we will consider directly connecting the router to a laptop. Let’s take a look at the wired connection first. There is nothing complicated in this procedure. we take the router in our hands and carefully look at the back panel.

We see five Ethernet ports. Four of them are colored yellow. these are LAN ports designed to connect computers on a local network, which is our laptop. The blue port is called the WAN port, it serves to connect to the provider’s line, in our case you cannot connect to it (nothing will burn, but there will be no sense either).

READ  How to connect huawei freebuds 3 to laptop

Next, we carefully consider the back and side edges of the laptop. You also need to find the port of the network card.

Next, we take the twisted pair cable from the package (network wire), connect one end to the laptop to the network card, the other end to any of the LAN ports. We turn on the laptop and router. That’s it, the wired connection is complete.

Wireless Wi-Fi is somewhat different from wired. First of all, we activate the Wi-Fi module on the laptop (depending on the model and manufacturer, Wi-Fi activation is different, see the instruction manual.). We also turn on the router.

After loading the laptop and router, click the Wi-Fi icon in the system tray to open the entire list of detected wireless networks. Our PT-Link TL-WR340G should also be on the list. We double-click on the name of the network, enter the password and that’s it, we are connected.

Configuring the router

Entering the router menu

To configure the router, you need to connect it to a laptop (in either of both ways), and open any web browser on the computer. Next, in the address bar of the browser, enter the name of the router (it is either indicated on the label under the bottom of the router, or see the instructions).

After entering the network address, press “Enter”, and the router will require you to enter a username / password to authorize the user.

The username / password is also indicated under the bottom, or in the instructions.

If after these actions an error is issued, then we reset the settings by pressing and holding the “Reset” button on the back of the router for 15 seconds.

Attention! In this case, all settings will be reset and restored to factory defaults.!

That’s it, the router is connected to the laptop and the settings are entered, then we configure the wired and wireless network.

Router package

As you can see, the network wire patch cord is already included in the package.

For wireless connection, nothing additional is required, only working Wi-Fi modules.

Connecting the router to a laptop

This article will consider the joint operation of a router and a laptop. how to connect a router to a laptop, setting up wired Ethernet and wireless Wi-Fi communication, some problems and their solutions in which it is impossible to connect.

First of all, we note that there are no fundamental differences on this issue between a laptop and a personal computer, this article can also be used for a PC.

For clarity, the router PT-Link TL-WR340G will be considered, the laptop does not matter, the main thing is the presence of a free LAN port and a working Wi-Fi module (if there is no module, then you need to purchase a Wi-Fi adapter separately).

Setting up a Wi-Fi router

In the “SSID” field, enter the name of the Wi-Fi network, which will be displayed in the system tray. We were looking for it in the list of detected networks. Next, in the “Region” field, select the country of residence, leave the “Channel” and “Mode” items as they are.

Next, we look at the item “Enable SSID Broadcast”. it is this checkbox that is responsible for the visibility of our wireless network. If the checkbox is checked, then the network is visible and it will be in the list. If the checkbox is unchecked, the router sends out a network detection signal, and you can connect to it only by entering the name manually.

Next, in the “Enable Wireless Security” field, put a tick (this is network protection), and in the “PSK Password” field, enter the password required to connect to Wi-Fi.

After all the settings, click the “Save” button so that all changes are saved and take effect.

Configuring a LAN router

Next, let’s set up a wired LAN. Go to the “Network” submenu, “LAN” submenu.

Setting up a wired network is minimal. setting the network IP address of the router and setting the subnet mask.

The local network

This approach will be a great solution to the task at hand if you are using a wireless TV. If the connection is correct, the TV will be able to view some, mainly multimedia data from the computer.

Note: We will consider only one TV model, but the settings of other Smart TVs are largely similar and differ only in the name of some items.

Setting up your TV

First, you need to connect the TV to the same router that the laptop is connected to.

Through the presented menu, select the “Network” tab.

After selecting the “Network Connection” section, at the next stage, click the “Configure” button.

Select your Wi-Fi router from the list of presented networks.

In addition to the above, if your device has Wi-Fi Direct support, you can connect directly to the TV.

This step can be divided into two parts depending on the TV used and its requirements.

Windows Media Player

To play media files from your library from laptop to TV, you need to apply special settings for Windows Media Player. Further actions should be performed only if the TV is connected without the manufacturer’s software.

    On the top panel of Windows Media Player, expand the “Stream” list and check the box next to the items indicated in the screenshot.

Open the “Organize” list and select “Manage Libraries”.

Here you need to select the type of data you want to import.

Specify the desired directory and click the “Add folder” button.

Click on the “OK” button to save the settings.

After that, the data will appear in the library, which can be accessed from the TV.

Many Smart TV manufacturers require special software to be installed in order to transfer data. In our case, the Smart Share program is required, the download and installation process of which we discussed in another instruction.

    After completing the installation, click the “Options” button at the top of the interface.

On the Service page, change the value to ON.

Switch to the “My Shared Files” section and click on the folder icon.

Through the window that opens, select one or more directories that contain the multimedia files you need. You can complete the selection by pressing the “OK” button.

After closing the window, the selected folders will appear in the list, which can be deleted using the icon on the toolbar.

  • Click on the “OK” button to finish working with the file manager.
  • Files can now be accessed from the TV.

    Play on TV

    This step is the easiest. This is due to the fact that the necessary recommendations are usually added to the standard instructions for working with the TV.

      Open the special section in the menu that stores files from your laptop. Usually its name corresponds to the previously installed software of the TV manufacturer.

    On some TVs, you need to select a network connection through the “Source” menu.

  • After that, the screen will display data from your laptop or computer, which can be viewed.
  • The only limitation you may encounter when using this method is that the laptop must always be turned on. If the laptop is put into sleep or hibernation mode, streaming will be interrupted.

    Miracast adapter

    If you do not have a Smart TV, you can use a special Miracast adapter. This device can be of different models, but in any case, it requires HDMI on the TV and, if possible, a USB port.

      Connect the Miracast adapter to the previously disconnected TV using the HDMI interface.

    Connect the supplied cable to the device.

    Connect the USB cable to a charger or an available port on your TV.

      Use the “Input” or “Source” button on the TV remote.

    Select HDMI port with Miracast adapter connected.

    The information presented on the screen will be required in the future to configure the adapter.

    Setting up your laptop

      Using standard Windows tools, connect to the Wi-Fi network of the Miracast adapter.

  • Optionally, using the browser, you can change the operating mode of the device in the “Default Mode” block:
  • AirPlay. for transferring files via DLNA;
  • Miracast. for mirroring images from the laptop screen.
  • If you did everything correctly, then, as in the second capable, the TV will display the image from your monitor.
  • After following the steps above, turn on Miracast on your computer according to the instructions above. If everything was done correctly, the TV will display an image from the laptop.

    Connecting laptop to PC

    You can mainly connect via Wi-Fi Smart TV, but we will also consider means for a regular TV.

    Connecting laptop to TV via Wi-Fi

    Many modern TVs can be connected to a computer or laptop via Wi-Fi to view supported files. We will talk about this, as well as about some additional solutions later in this article.

    Miracast

    Miracast technology allows you to use a Wi-Fi network to wirelessly transmit a signal from a laptop to a TV. Thanks to this approach, you can turn your Smart TV into a full-fledged monitor that displays or expands the laptop desktop.

    Setting up your TV

    Most modern TVs that support Wi-Fi allow you to easily connect via Miracast.

      Use the “Setting” button on the remote control to go to the TV settings.

    Open the “Network” section and select “Miracast”.

    In the next window, change the value to “ON”.

    Subsequent steps must be performed on a laptop that supports the same technology.

    Miracast on laptop

    We examined the process of using Miracast on a computer and laptop in a separate article using the example of Windows 10. If your laptop supports this connection, then after performing the above steps, the TV will display the image from the monitor.

    It will be possible to customize the operation of the monitor through the “Screen Resolution” section or by pressing the “WinP” key combination on the keyboard.

    If you have any questions, please contact us in the comments.

    When connecting a laptop and TV via Wi-Fi, the disadvantage is the signal transmission delay, especially noticeable if you use the TV as a wireless monitor. Otherwise, this approach is not much inferior to the connection via HDMI.
