External hard drive for iPad
I am such a person that I quickly light up with something and quickly implement my ideas. Olya, by the way, is the same. I will give you diverse examples from life.
I worked in an interesting high-paying job. In November 2009, I got the idea to move to Thailand. Less than three months have passed since we already lived in our beloved Thai city of Chiang Mai. I wanted to completely abandon meat. I did it right there. I myself did not notice how I became a vegetarian. I wanted a reader to read more. after a couple of days I enjoyed reading on my Nook.
But it happens that I light up, but after weighing all the pros and cons, I abandon the idea. Then I can return to the idea, light up again and refuse again. Buying an external hard drive for iPad is one such unrealized idea. Nevertheless, in the article I would like to reveal this topic a little.
Yes, it is possible to connect a hard drive to iPad and enjoy videos, music and photos from it.
HyperDrive iPad Hard Drive
This device is designed specifically for the iPad, which is why the iPad is in the name. HyperDrive iPad Hard Drive connects to iPad using wire and Camera Connection Kit.
As you can see, the developers did not bother much with some convenient special program. HyperDrive is perceived as a flash drive and the work is the same as with flash drives via CCKit.
There is a more expensive option for geeks with a screen:
There is also such a device from HyperDrive. iFlashDrive.
I think from the picture it is clear how it works and why.
In my subjective opinion, the device is not worth the money that is asked for it. And some kind of frivolous attitude to the software for HyperDrive is alarming.
Seagate GoFlex Satellite
Looks like the most interesting device at the moment. And if I took a hard drive for the iPad, then, most likely, I would stop at this option.
Here’s how the Seagate GoFlex Satellite is advertised:
Access to content from iPad is carried out through a browser or through a special free utility.
Many, I think, will want this device for storing and playing movies. But you should be aware that by default streaming will only be possible for mp4 and m4v, Apple’s native formats. To play AVI or MKV you need a third party player from the App Store. But since there are problems with the players now, you still have to find a suitable player.
The device is charged from a computer via a USB 3.0 port. Hard disk weight 398 grams.
details on the Seagate GoFlex Satellite can be viewed on the Seagate official website. And I note that this hard drive, unlike the next, is designed for both Apple devices and ordinary smartphones.
Well, I also liked another device that can be told about.
It exists in three trim levels of 16, 32 and 64 gigabytes. Essentially a little memory pump for your tablet. The device is suitable not only for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, but also for any tablet or smartphone with Wi-Fi.
The Kingston Wi-Drive is charged via USB. Battery life up to 4 hours. iPad has Wi-Fi access to it. Remarkable weight of the device: only 85 grams.
Data management is the same as with the Seagate GoFlex using a dedicated free utility from the App Store.
information about the device can be found on the official Kingston website.
Functionality of the USB connector of the router
Pay attention to the supported functionality of the USB port of the router. Even if this connector is present, this does not mean that everything that I described above will work on this model.
There are routers that work with USB sticks, but do not support modems, or vice versa. For example, Apple Airport (by the way, a cool router) has a USB connector on board, but it does not have DLNA or LTE Internet connection. it is only needed to create your own media server that works only on Apple and iTunes devices. Or, as in the case of Xiaomi. there is a connector, you can use it as a file server, but here’s the problem. only through a special application that is installed on the computer, and to deal with it, despite the fact that everything is in Chinese, is very difficult, and it’s not convenient.
Router USB port standard
The first thing to pay attention to is that the connector is exactly the USB 3.0 standard in order to work at the highest possible speed. If you want to create a media server and broadcast high-definition video from it, then USB 2.0 may not cope with the task and constantly slow down
It will be a shame to spend several thousand rubles, and in the end not be able to fully use all the “buns”. The same applies to the drive connected to it. a flash drive or hard drive must have a USB 3.0 interface
WPS button on TP-LINK router (QSS)
Until recently, TP-LINK used its own name “QSS” on its routers, which stands for Quick Security Setup. fast secure setup. But the new models also use the common name “WPS”.
On a TP-LINK router, the WPS button on many models is very often combined with the Reset function. In this case, a short press will activate WPS, and a long press will reset the settings.
If it is not on the case, this does not mean that the WPS function is missing on the router. It’s just that the manufacturer saved money and didn’t put it on the case as a button. The WPS on / off setting on the TP-Link router must be found in the control panel.
It is located in the upper tab “Additional settings”. Here, in the side menu in the “System Tools” section, you need to open the “System Settings” item and check the “Enable WPS” box, then click on the “Save” button.
What to look for when choosing a router with a USB port?
In general, you have already seen the benefits of having and using a USB port on a router. Now I would like to give some practical recommendations if you nevertheless decide to “get hold” of such a thing.
Some routers can even be configured into a mesh with software. This is the case with the AiMesh software built into newer ASUS routers. With this software, you’ll be able to throw another ASUS router or on the network and use it as a mesh point. The setup is a bit more complicated, but you’ll get to keep the benefits of a full router while enabling mesh-like improvement.
Router vs. Mesh Networking Are you just trying to fix a dead spot?
This is a pretty common issue. You have great Wi-Fi in the kitchen or living room, but when you go downstairs, or to the bedroom, the connection quality drops. If everything is working well in parts of your home that are close to the router or that aren’t blocked by things not Wi-Fi friendly. the walls of your bathroom are notorious Wi-Fi signal blockers because of the special drywall used and all the copper pipes inside them. you could be the perfect candidate for a wireless repeater instead of setting up a whole new network.
Also known as Wi-Fi extenders, wireless repeaters do precisely what their name implies. they take your existing Wi-Fi signal and repeat the signal to extend its range. Usually very easy to set up using a network cable or an online settings page, Wi-Fi Extenders are also compact and only need a power connection. One thing to be aware of is that you usually can’t connect a consumer-grade Wi-Fi extender to an existing extender, so daisy-chaining them to reach your garage or the neighbor’s house isn’t very practical.
You also will have a new network name (known as an SSID) to use when connecting to the extender instead of the router itself. This can be a bit of a pain if you move in and out of a room that needs an extender very often. Quality Wi-Fi Extenders run between 30 and 150 depending on the network type, so if you need multiple fast 802.11ac extenders, it might be more practical to set up a mesh network.
Another quirk of using a network extender is that they often cut the available bandwidth in half. This means your Wi-Fi network can only run at 50% speed whenever you’re connected through the extender (not your internet speeds, which are usually much slower than your actual Wi-Fi network). While you might never notice it, it still will have an effect whenever you’re trying to send or receive a lot of information, like watching an HD movie or transferring large files from one device to another.
How to disable WPS on a router?
Accordingly, in order to disable WPS on the router, you must also go to its panel and deactivate this function in the same way. The setting is in the same place where I showed where it is turned on. This section is labeled differently on each model.
Choosing a router
The NAS should be built on the basis of suitable networking equipment. The router must have a built-in USB port.
Be sure to pay attention to the USB version. For 2020, the de facto standard for USB 3.0 drives, it provides high data transfer rates, and it is advisable to use stations / disks with an interface of this version. But if the router is equipped with only 100 Mbit ports, then you can limit yourself to USB 2.0, since a 100-bit router is not able to use all the capabilities of USB-Three. But if you have gigabit ports, we strongly recommend choosing a gadget with port version 3. this will provide an acceptable read / write speed over the network.
Note that even USB 2 will be enough for downloading torrents, watching Full HD videos and other typical tasks. But higher speeds will increase the overall speed of the system and help to streamline content flow.
If you plan to have a high network and disk load, you will need a router with support for multiple Wi-Fi ranges, gigabit ports and modular firmware that allows you to connect functions as needed. Among them, for example, the latest models of ZyXEL routers with built-in NDMA software. Keenetic Ultra 2 and others. Mid-range models from Asus look good. RT-AC1200G, D-link DIR-825. All of them are equipped with powerful hardware, debugged firmware with a built-in torrent client and other important features.
You can add functionality to older models by installing the DD-WRT software. But, of course, it will not be able to increase the speed of the processor, add support for the initially absent Wi-Fi standards or overcome the bandwidth limit of a 100 Mbit port.
Preparing the hard drive for use
Although the drive should be “recognized” automatically, it is recommended to prepare it for pairing with a router. If the HDD is new, the firmware will create the partition table on its own in most cases. But if you have to do it manually, then take into account some of the nuances:
- Create one partition for the entire HDD, do not split into volumes.
- Format on a suitable file system (FS).
The choice of FS depends on the router model. ZyXEL devices and older models of the Asus product line work well with the NTFS system: their firmware uses the proprietary drivers of this file system with a high read / write speed. Others also support this file system, but support is organized through slow OpenSource drivers.
Users of the Apple ecosystem are important to support the HFS FS and the AFP protocol: they have a proprietary data backup system. If you need such technology, then use either routers from Apple or gadgets with modular firmware and downloadable HFS components and an AFP protocol server.
Most routers run on Linux kernel-based firmware, the current file system standard for which is ext4, and the drive for them should be formatted to it. The disadvantage of this file system is that it is not supported by Windows without third-party drivers, and you will have to format it either from a Linux computer or special formatting programs.
If the HDD is taken from some computer, then it most likely already has a file system with partitions. It is recommended to delete all old content and partitions: this can be done with the standard Windows Control Panel snap-in “Disk Management”.
How to connect a hard drive or USB flash drive to a router
Today in an ordinary home there are many consumers of network traffic: stationary computers and laptops, televisions, set-top boxes, phones and tablets, printers, camcorders, smart home systems. And it takes a lot of disk space to store information downloaded by home users. Connecting the HDD to the router helps to optimize this task. In this article, we will look at how to connect a hard drive to a router and turn the device into a full-fledged network storage.
Downloading torrents and sharing media
Torrent downloads are organized by means of the Transmission client, which is installed as a separate module. After downloading it, you need to perform the following actions:
- Select the “Applications” section.
- Go to the “Torrent Client” tab.
- Turn on this program.
- Define a directory for storing uploaded content.
- Remote control via the Internet is also activated here: after that, the download and distribution process can be controlled from a PC or phone.
The next important feature is DLNA technology. It allows you to stream multimedia to TVs and other gadgets. To enable, proceed in the same way as setting up Transmission: download and activate the component and specify the desired section.
When the router is purchased and configured, all that remains is to find the hard drive. There are several ways to go:
- Take the HDD from the old laptop and insert it into the docking station.
- Buy a new laptop or desktop hard drive also for the docking station.
- Purchase a USB HDD like WD MyPassport.
The first method is bad in that a used spare part with an unknown remaining resource and, most likely, a low speed of work is taken. But this is the most budgetary option if you have an unnecessary laptop. The latter, thus, can even be upgraded by purchasing a replacement SSD. In the second case, the speed of the new disks will become higher, and the desktop version also means terabyte volumes. But when pairing a router with a docking station, various incompatibility problems can arise: the firmware does not always “recognize” the dock and the device inserted into it. Therefore, it is optimal to resort to the latter option and connect a USB disk to the router. They have no nuances of compatibility.
Why connect HDD to router
The amount of network traffic consumed is growing day by day. Most content is available online, but it is often necessary to save some data to disk for quick access. It can be:
- music and films;
- distributions of programs;
- other information.
Usually they do this as follows: one of the home computers is switched on around the clock, and its disks are opened for general network access. But this solution has a number of disadvantages:
- The computer is constantly working and makes noise, flashes diodes and interferes, especially at night.
- The longer the PC uptime (operating time before shutdown or reboot), the more it “slows down” and “glitches”.
- The device consumes electricity, and given the sufficiently high power of modern power supplies (800-1500 W), this can lead to significant amounts of electricity at the end of the month.
- To configure, you need to have specific knowledge and skills of system administration.
The problem can be solved by purchasing specialized equipment. NAS or network storage. This is a device with a built-in controller, network interface and slots for one or more hard drives, allowing them to be combined into an array and brought to a local network for public access. But reliable solutions are expensive. However, there is one more possibility. to connect a HDD or a USB flash drive with a large capacity to the router. Of course, the latter must support such a possibility.
How To Connect Hard Drives To iPad. New iOS 13 Update!
There is a Wi-Fi router in almost every home. If a few years ago the task of the “box” was to distribute the Internet to the premises and no more, then a modern router is a multifunctional “combine” that can download torrents, give multimedia via DLNA, and so on, including working with drives. And if you can connect a drive to the router, then you can open the disk for network operations.
- a router with the appropriate functionality and interface (one or more) USB;
- HDD and USB docking station or full USB disk.
Configuring the router
Let’s consider the process using the example of a ZyXEL Keenetic Ultra 2 router and a 3 terabyte USB drive. Installation for different routers and HDD is very similar, only the names of functions and menu items differ.
Let’s start performing certain actions:
- In the network folders configuration menu, you should immediately enable sharing, automount drives and unauthorized access.
- Next, connect the HDD to the USB port and check if it is recognized. In the program, go to the “System Monitor” interface item, select the “Drives” tab.
- Now we decide whether to enable the swap file. If the router has less than 128 MB of RAM, then without activating Swap, important functions, for example, the Transmission torrent client, will not work. If there is more memory, then paging can be omitted, since it creates an additional and high load on the hard disk. Calling Swap during active work. downloading torrents, distributing video. can quickly disable the drive. But if you still need paging, you can enable it in the “Options” section on the “Paging file” tab. The size of the swap is also set here.
By default, all authorized Wi-Fi users and wired clients have read / write access. The network drive resource should be “open” for everyone. To this end, follow these steps:
- Go to Windows Network.
- Find the “Sharing Settings” tab.
- Select a folder and give it a name.
If necessary, you can distribute user rights. This will help:
- create separate folders for each, inaccessible to others;
- specify access rights for individual directories.
The firmware allows you to flexibly manage checklists and assign directory owners, users who can view content, write their own or delete, and so on. There are several management tools for this:
- creating a list of system users and differentiating access levels;
- opening a specific section of the media for a particular account;
- differentiation of rights at the level of individual folders.
These capabilities are concentrated in the “Manage Folder Permissions” interface component. It is absent by default and is installed separately.
After installation, create the desired accounts and grant permissions. This is done through the User Accounts section. The rights assigned here mainly relate to the system settings, so assign more to “adult” accounts, and to “children”. at least. But to organize access to the HDD, be sure to check the “Windows Network” parameter.
All accounts should be password protected. The ZyXEL firmware allows you to create a passwordless account, but remote access with it will not be possible. So be sure to set a password.
Next, the rights to the folders are set. The default setting is to prohibit everything and for everyone, which is justified: the administrator opens access to specific resources. The reverse practice of “anything that is not prohibited is allowed” always leads to security problems.
Configuration is performed through the “Applications” section on the “Access to folders” tab. Here you can:
- Give or deny access. Keep in mind that blocking a partition automatically closes both subfolders and files.
- Flexibly distribute rights to file operations: read / write / delete, read only.
How to connect a hard drive to iPad
Sooner or later, computer owners are faced with the problem of insufficient disk space.
You can expand it by installing a second additional hard drive or by replacing the old hard drive with a new, larger one.
Before proceeding with the installation itself and connecting the hard drive, you should tell the system which of the hard drives will be the main one.
This is done by installing a special jumper on the hard drive case.
Master. means that the disk will be the master, and Slave. the slave.
You cannot install two devices in one system in Master mode, there is always only one Master device, but there can be several Slave devices.
But such jumpers have IDE hard drives.
Now they are going out of use, and devices with SATA interface are coming to replace them.
There are no jumpers in such disks, and the integration of several of them into a computer is achieved by assigning one SATA port (usually the first port) located on the motherboard to the main function, and the other ports to a secondary function.
The procedure for installing a hard disk into the system unit is quite simple.
First you need to decide on the installation location. usually this is the front chassis of the case, on which all 3.5 ″ disk media are fixed.
The drive is usually mounted using four screws or special latches. It all depends on the type and model of the case of the system unit.
Once the drive is securely attached, it must be connected to the motherboard and power supply.
Use a SATA cable to connect hard drives to the motherboard.
As noted earlier, the parallel IDE interface was used to connect disk devices, which is no longer used due to the noticeably slower data transfer rate.
Motherboards can have multiple SATA connectors. There are no strict guidelines for which of these slots the hard drive should be connected to.
But still, if it is recommended to connect the Master device in SATA under the first number, and in the subsequent slave devices: an additional hard disk, DVD drive, etc.
In IDE, one loop can connect two devices.
But try to put all the hard drive on a separate line.
By connecting the SATA cable to the hard drive and the motherboard connector, you should connect the power to the hard drive.
You must use the correct connector on the power supply. All connectors are designed to prevent misconnection.
Therefore, if you are unable to insert the plug into the connector, then do not use excessive force trying to “secure” it into the connector.
Try flipping the plug or using a different pin on the power supply.
Power and data cables must not fall into the rotation zone of cooling coolers of the system unit, processor or video card.
If necessary, they should be assembled into a bundle and secured with special ties.
You can connect a 2.5 ″ hard drive to your computer, which is installed in laptops.
Most of them have the same connectors as 3.5 ″ SATA hard drives.
The only additional need is a device for its mounting, since standard cases are designed to accommodate only 3.5 ″ devices.
If the interface of the 2.5 ″ hard drive differs from the interface of the computer motherboard, then it is possible to connect it through a special adapter or connect it to the USB port as an external hard drive.
This, of course, requires the purchase of the appropriate “box”. For maximum performance, if your computer has USB 3.0 connectors, then purchase a box with the same connector.
After turning on the computer, the hard disk is automatically detected by the system, and you can make further settings, for example, formatting, partitioning into separate logical partitions, etc.
To do this, it is better to use special programs, for example, Acronis Disk Director.
In more detail, all these procedures are described here, installing Windows 7.
If you installed an SSD in your computer. then you will need to tweak it for optimal performance and long life.

Using another device
If you want to connect an external or hard drive to an older TV model, it is much easier to use an auxiliary device for this. Let’s consider all possible ways:
- If there is no USB port on the TV or the USB port does not work, then you can connect the HDD through a laptop, via HDMI.
- Use a TV, Smart or Android set-top box. This is a special device that connects to the TV through the AV-input or “tulip”. After that, you can connect a USB flash drive, hard drive or other removable media to it.
All external devices are connected via HDMI or via AV inputs. Therefore, it is not necessary to have a USB port on the TV. Additionally, TV set-top boxes can be used to watch digital and interactive television.
You can connect an external or optical hard drive to the TV. The easiest way to do this is via the USB interface, but if the screen is not equipped with ports, then use a special TV set-top box to connect. Additionally, make sure the TV supports the format of the media files loaded on the HDD.

If you want to connect a SATA hard drive to the TV, use a special adapter. After that, the HDD can be connected via the USB connector. Features:
- If you plan to connect an HDD with a capacity of more than 2 TB, then you need to use an adapter with the possibility of additional recharge (via USB or using a separate power cord).
- After the HDD is installed in a special adapter, it can be connected to the TV via USB.
If the device is not recognized, then most likely it needs to be formatted first.
Using an adapter can significantly degrade the signal quality. In addition, it can cause complications in sound reproduction. Then you need to additionally connect the speakers.
All modern TVs are equipped with HDMI or USB connectors. Therefore, the easiest way is to connect the hard drive to the screen using a USB cable. The method is relevant only for external railways. Procedure:
Connect the hard drive to your TV. Typically the USB connector is located on the back or side of the screen.
Some TV models only play certain file formats. Therefore, even after connecting the hard drive to the TV, some movies and music tracks may not be displayed.
How to connect a hard drive to a TV
The hard drive can be used to store media content and other important information. over, its capacity is much higher than that of other removable media. You can connect an external or stationary hard disk drive to the TV in several ways.
We connect the hard drive to the TV
Many modern TVs are equipped with USB ports and other connectors for connecting hard drives, Flash drives, game consoles and other devices. This turns the screen into not just a Lenovo evening TV viewer, but a real media center.
articles on this topic:
Good day. I have an external memory unit for 2TV (with movies). I connect it to a laptop and a large TV without problems, but in the country with a 22 ″ TV it does not work, although it has 2 USB outputs and 3 HDMI. On the Internet I read that I need additional power for the hard drive.
Could you help me in this matter?
Vladimir, hello. In the article, at the beginning of the second method, it is also said that for drives of this size, additional power may be required (an external drive must have a corresponding connector). Why is it not needed in all cases?. Most likely, your 22-inch TV is USB 2.0, and your laptop and large TV are USB 3.0. If the external drive is 3.0, then the “small” TV does not see it, not only because of the large volume, but also for this reason. There is no way without additional power.
P.S. The problem of connecting an external HDD (storage, hard disk, hard drive) to the TV. solved!!
I must correct my previous statement about replacing MBR with GPT or vice versa. the problem is deeper.
The GPT tabular standard is required for the TV to read drives over 2.2 TV (the limit for MBR), while the computer reads without restrictions. And increases the life of the HDD.
The Seagate STEL8000200 (8 TB) HDD that works for me with a PANASONIC TX-49DXR600 TV has the following parameters: GPT, NTFS, a cluster of 8 512-byte sectors, has a partition (logical disk) MSR (Microsoft System Reserved) 128 MB.
The MSR section on the drive does not matter, and is most likely used for alignment (offset of 1024 KB) and as a buffer memory for the controller. It is created by the DiskPart application, which is available in Windows.
The parameters mean that this drive has the old magnetic track markup. 512 bytes (the sector size is not physically changeable), and most modern drives (since 2010) are manufactured in the new Advanced Format. a new sector markup format, 4096 bytes each (4 KB ).
Thus, we can state that the problem of most unreadable drives in the sector size of 512 or 4096 bytes.
Unfortunately, this technical parameter is not indicated by the manufacturers. You can define it like this: on the computer, hover the cursor over your external HDD, press the right mouse button and select “format”. in the formatting parameters when choosing the cluster size, the minimum is indicated, this will be the sector size (512 or 4096 bytes).
Therefore, ask the seller to indicate the size of the HDD sector.
In my case, you can use disks with 4096 byte sectors (I have two) in the format with the FAT32 file system, which limits the file size to 4 GB. For low-definition films, it will do. To reduce the size of the video file, I recommend the free program Avidemux 2.6, which allows you to reduce the size and quality of the “stream” and divide the file into parts, in addition, copy video from one container to another (for example, from.avi to.mkv) without losing quality and convert one video or audio codec to another, as not all containers and codecs are read by TVs (Software problem).
The problem that the TV reads the NTFS file system with a 512 byte sector markup, and does not read NTFS with 4096 bytes, is that the USB controller driver installed in the TV software is defective.
If both markup cannot be read, format it to the FAT32 file system, it is supported by flash drives. Sometimes the driver does not support GPT, then replace with MBR.
To format to the FAT32 file system, you need to use the Paragon Hard Disk Manager program or similar. There are limitations with Windows for FAT32.
Request from the TV manufacturer for driver updates (for USB controller) with support for NTFS format HDDs with 512 and 4096 bytes sector markup.
The problem of unreadability, in my opinion, is that the TV manufacturer “hacked” (legitimately) a typical (standard) USB controller driver to embed its own autonomous file system generation module into it (a caveat for the above. for recording TVs) for anti-piracy purposes. With this embedding, the “useful” module for supporting the necessary standards was removed. in my case, NTFS with a “long” (4096 bytes) sector.
It was lazy for them to competently compile without loss.
The dareglobal ip-TV jpiter-t5-pm set-top box with a 1000GB HDD is the property of a beeline, a hard drive was ripped out of it and sold to the kettle as a complete one in a working condition for 1500 rubles Question: can this set-top box be made working without an HDD or what? Thank you for your attention, regards.
Can you describe (or send a screenshot) the step-by-step removal of the top of the dareglobal jpiter-t5-pm TV box? thank.
Hello. Tell me how you can connect a 3 TB hard drive to your TV. Is this possible in principle, or is it better to change to a smaller volume?
Hello, Alexander. Here it already depends on the TV, because each of them has different restrictions on connecting external hard drives. If the device is not more than a few years old, use the exFAT or NTFS file system so that the TV can work normally with this amount of information. If you use FAT16 or FAT32, then you definitely need to look at the specification here, since some models support a maximum of 2GB.
Whether or not the connection is made depends on the anti-piracy restrictions on the TV.
I ran into this. But there are “vents” through which you can crawl through (they haven’t closed yet. with the TV OS updates).
As a rule, anti-piracy barriers do not apply to flash drives, they are equipped with FAT32 (which limits the file size to 4 GB). And you can put the FAT32 file system on the HDD. Restrictions on the size of the HDD, you can bypass the “partition” of the volume into logical drives within the limit set by the TV.
But it’s better to set these limits yourself.
I am faced with anti-piracy limitation of HDD usage in sector size. On my PANASONIC TX-49DXR600 there is a barrier to using the NTFS file system with a “long” sector (Advanced Format. a new format for marking sectors, 4096 bytes). And the “short” (512 bytes) sector can be used.
The size of the “sector” is not physically changeable technical parameter, the size of the cluster is limited by the size of the “sector”. Determine the sector size as follows: on the computer, hover the cursor over your external HDD, press the right mouse button and select “format”. in the formatting parameters when choosing the cluster size, the minimum is indicated, this will be the sector size (512 or 4096 bytes).
Changing the main repository
By default, all games were put into internal memory, however, when formatting, the external HDD was automatically selected as the main one, so these sections were swapped. If you need to manually change them, you can do it in just a few clicks:
- Return to “Settings” again and go to the “Memory” section.
- Here select one of the sections present to display its parameters.
Find the item “Application installation location” and tick the required option.
You are now aware of the process for modifying the master repository yourself. Setting these parameters is available at any time, alternately changing each section, the operating system and the console itself do not suffer from this, and performance does not drop.
There is nothing difficult in connecting the HDD to the PlayStation 4, all you need is a USB to Micro-USB cable. Insert one side of it into the hard drive case, and the other into the game console itself. After that, you can safely launch the set-top box and proceed to the next step.
Connecting an external hard drive to the PlayStation 4
The PlayStation 4 game console is currently considered the best and best-selling console in the world. and more users prefer the game on such a device, rather than on a PC. This is facilitated by the constant release of new products, exclusives and guaranteed stable operation of all projects. However, the internal memory of the PlayStation 4 has its own limitations and sometimes all purchased games no longer fit there. In such cases, an external drive comes to the rescue, which is connected via USB. Today we would like to discuss this topic in more detail, step by step analyzing the connection and configuration procedure.
Formatting the hard drive
The equipment in question supports work only with certain data storage formats, therefore, immediately after connection, it is necessary to format it, and the appropriate type of drive will be selected automatically. You need to follow these steps:
- Launch the PlayStation 4 and go to the “Settings” menu by clicking on the corresponding icon.
Scroll down the list, where you will find the category “Devices” and open it.
You will be notified of the completion of formatting, you just have to click on “OK”.
The hard drive is ready for further installation of applications and other software on it. It should be noted that this section is now selected as the main one, and all files will be saved there. If you want to change the main section, please note the next step.
Connecting an external hard drive to the PlayStation 4
In addition, we recommend that you first make sure that there are no necessary files left on the information drive, since we will continue to format it. It is best to connect it to your computer and copy the required objects. If you encounter problems with detection, we advise you to read our separate material, which contains a guide to solving various problems, and we go directly to working with the game console.
Transferring applications to an external HDD
It remains only to tell what to do in cases when applications are already installed in the internal section. No, they do not need to be reinstalled, you just need to perform the transfer procedure. To do this, follow these instructions:
- Go back to “Storage”, select local storage, and then “Applications”.
Click on “Options” and find “Transfer to external storage” in the list. You will be prompted to select multiple games at once. Check them and confirm the transfer.
That’s all I would like to tell you about connecting an external hard drive to the PlayStation 4 game console. As you can see, the process is quite simple and takes just a couple of minutes. The main thing is to preformatting and not forgetting to switch the main memory at the right time.
Proven Ways to Connect a Hard Drive to a Laptop
For “advanced” users of personal computers and laptops, sometimes there is a need to transfer some data from the first device to the second. Of course, it is possible to find some kind of programmed way out. For example, upload a large number of files to the cloud, and then it takes a long and tedious job to download them from it to a laptop. Or try in the old fashioned way to upload information to a removable medium and also transfer it for a long time to another device. Long, uncomfortable and boring, yeah?
As you know, within laptop hardware, operations are much faster than with externally connected devices. But what if you take the HDD off the computer and connect the hard drive to the laptop? You can really cope with such a task on your own, but you should read the instructions on how to do this correctly and without prejudice to the devices.
Disconnecting the hard drive from the PC
You don’t need to be an experienced system administrator to understand that to connect an external hard drive to a laptop, you need to remove it from a desktop computer. But the question is: how to do this, it still requires some knowledge.
A detailed guide on how to remove the hard drive itself from the computer:
- Turn off the personal computer completely and remove the plug from the socket.
- We remove the cover of the system unit, which gives us full access to its filling.
- Find the HDD (If you don’t know what it looks like, then we recommend first looking for this information on the Internet) and disconnect every single wire from the connectors.
- As a rule, the disc itself is mounted either on the grooves or on the mounting bolts, which must be unscrewed. After releasing, remove the HDD outside.
At first glance, there is nothing complicated in this procedure, but it was mentioned above that knowledge of computer circuits will be additionally useful here. This is not in order to remove the element, but on the contrary, to put it in place and it will work again.
If such knowledge is absent, then you should not despair. You can just take a picture of the correct scheme before disconnecting or write it down in a language you understand in a notebook.
Connecting to a computer via USB
For uninformed readers, the following point should be clarified: the hard drive of a laptop and a computer differ significantly in size. It is obvious that a large hard drive from a PC cannot be installed in place of a small laptop device.
Naturally, technologies do not stand still and a special Box was invented for this case. They are of several types:
- 3.5 IDE to USB 3.0. for IDE interfaces with increased speed over USB 3.0;
- 3.5 Sata to USB 3.0. For SATA interface at similar speed.
As for unfamiliar words such as SATA and IDE, these are subtypes of hard drives. Before buying a contact box, you need to know the type of hard drive to be connected. Find out what hard disk was on a stationary computer. perhaps by examining it. This is written on a sticker with technical information, which is located on the body of the filling element.
Let’s go back to the connection. It is possible to connect a second hard drive to a laptop only through a special box. This container itself looks like a black box into which the original hard drive should fit. For SATA drives, it is slightly smaller than for IDE drives. There are also universal containers, however, the price for them is much higher.
So, having such a box available, we insert the hard drive into it and connect the other end of the wire to the USB port. If he has a power supply, then we plug it into the network accordingly.
If everything went well, then the laptop should see the new connected device by standard procedure. But what to do if the laptop operating system does not detect it? In this case, you need to perform the usual recheck of the paired device in the device manager. Having found it in the start menu, you should open the “HID Devices” section and look in the list for a name similar to the name of the box. Most often this is a problem with the supplied software (drivers). If the icon shows a sign with a yellow exclamation mark, then you need to right-click on this device and click “update drivers”.
It so happens that the problem of connecting a hard drive from a computer to a laptop through the box lies in the system name of the HDD. Here you need to get into “Disk Management” and look at the list of new connected devices. Some of the existing disk partitions in the laptop are probably named as the disk itself and they begin to conflict with each other. In this case, you need to rename either the old hard drive or the new attached device.
This method is considered the easiest, but requires a box container.

How to connect a railway to a laptop via a motherboard
Another option for connecting a hard drive, but more “hard” one. Here we have to deal directly with the motherboard of the laptop, and for this we first need to get to it. There is nothing wrong, you just need to adhere to a certain algorithm of actions.
First, you should completely de-energize the laptop and wait until the operating system is completely shut down. It is advisable that the system be turned off not in an emergency way, but through the shutdown button in the “start” menu. Next, open the battery cell, take it out and put it aside. Now we have to unscrew all the screws that secure the main cover of the bottom panel of the device and, when finished, remove this cover.
This will open a view of all installed hard drives in the laptop (one or two). They have the usual look of a stationary HDD, but in a small case. To remove it, unscrew all the screws on the top cover and on it. If everything is done, then we next disconnect the connected cables and carefully, with a sense of proportion, remove the internal board from it.
Let’s move on to connecting the hard drive through the motherboard. Having previously prepared an additional SATA cable, we connect it with one end to the hard drive, and the other end to the outlet in the HDD slot in the laptop. If it is important to have one native disk on the laptop and you need to connect another one, then here it may be possible to perform this operation only through an additional cell.
The installation of the second hard disk is performed according to the same instructions as the installation of the first one. Only after all components are fully connected, should the device be powered up and turned on.
The procedure for connecting a hard drive to a laptop without a container should involve craftsmen who, at least, performed repairs of stationary computers, not to mention laptops.
