How to choose the default graphics card for all applications?

change, default, graphics, card, laptop

If you have a system with multiple GPUs running Windows 10, you can now manually specify the preferred GPU that the application should use for performance or to improve battery life.

On Windows 10, devices with multiple GPUs included the ability to set the preferred graphics card that the application should use in the graphics control panels available from Nvidia and AMD.

However, starting with version 1803 (April 2018 Update) and later, Windows 10 includes a new section in the Settings app where you can also specify the preferred graphics card for traditional desktop and Microsoft Store apps to improve system performance. or battery life.

In this guide, you will learn how to configure the GPU that an application should use on a Windows 10 laptop or desktop with multiple GPUs.

How to specify the preferred graphics card for applications using settings

Use these steps to force your app to use a discrete GPU instead of the built-in adapter in Windows 10 for better system performance or battery life:

  • Open Settings.
  • Click on System.
  • Click on Display.
  • In the Multiple Displays section, select the Advanced Graphics Options option.
  • Select the type of application you want to customize from the drop-down menu:
  • The classic application is your traditional Win32 desktop programs.
  • A universal app is an app available through the Microsoft Store.
  • If you choose Desktop Application, you will need to click the Browse button to locate the.exe file to add the application. If you select the Universal app option, you will see a second dropdown menu for selecting an app.
  • Use the dropdown menu and select the application.
  • Click the Options button.
  • Set the graphics preferences you want to use:
  • The system default is always the default and Windows 10 decides which GPU to use automatically.
  • Power Saving. Runs an application on the GPU that has the lowest power consumption, which is the integrated GPU in most cases.
  • High performance. the application runs on the most powerful GPU, which is most often an external or discrete GPU.
  • Click the Save button.
  • After completing the steps, the app you configured will use the GPU you specified, optimizing battery life or performance the next time you launch.

    It is important to note that these settings will take precedence over the same settings that are available in other control panels (which you can continue to use).

    Also, while you can manually set the preferred GPU for an app in Windows 10, ultimately the app always decides which processor to use. This means that if you change the settings and the application continues to use a different GPU, you may need to change the settings in the application itself.

    If you want to prevent an application from using the preferred GPU setting, simply select the application from the list, click the Uninstall button, or on the options page, select the System Default option.

    Questions and answers in the field of it technologies and PC customization

    The question of setting up AMD Radeon for games has occurred at least once among users of gaming video adapters. It’s not enough to just plug the GPU into your computer, in which case many modern games can still slow down. Therefore, initial configuration of the graphics accelerator driver is required.

    Switching graphics, options // integrated and discrete video cards

    For laptops with two video cards. during normal work in Windows (for example, watching movies, surfing the web). usually the built-in (integrated) video card is involved, which consumes less resources (which is justified).

    When you start a game, discrete should start its work, but sometimes this does not happen. As a result, you play “on an integrated video card”. that’s why the game slows down. To speed up the work of an AMD video card, first, you need it to be at least involved and working.

    Discrete video card. a video card in the form of a separate board. Its features:

    • provides higher performance compared to the built-in one (for games, for high-quality video, graphics, etc.);
    • consumes more power (which is quite critical for a laptop, since many users prefer to work on battery power);
    • as a result of this, usually, a discrete video card starts only when the system is under high load (for example, when starting 3D games);
    • with a high load on it. you will hear the noise of coolers (fans);
    • in the event of a discrete video card breakdown. it is quite easy to replace.

    An integrated (or integrated) graphics card is a graphics card that is embedded directly into the processor or motherboard of your laptop. Its features:

    • lower performance compared to discrete (although many games can run fairly tolerably. For example, one of my laptops has an Intel HD 4400 installed. you can play WOW, Civilization IV / V, Tanks, etc. For older games, as a rule, such a video card suitable for “hurray”);
    • consumes less energy;
    • practically silent (a big plus for a laptop and for users who do not like noise (for me, for example));
    • much cheaper (thanks to this, there are now affordable laptops on sale for a wide range of consumers).

    So, in the AMD Catalyst Control Center there is a special tab that regulates the “relationship” between the integrated and discrete video cards. this section is “Global parameters of switchable graphics”.

    In it you need to set the following parameters:

    • deliver maximum performance for battery and mains;
    • uncheck the box next to the item “Allow additional energy saving options” (if you do not remove it, the laptop may start saving on performance, trying to save the battery charge for a longer time).

    In the “Options for switchable graphics application” tab, I recommend doing the following: select your game (if it is not there, add it, see Fig. 5, arrow-4). and switch its mode to “High performance” (arrow-3 in Fig. 5). Thus, a discrete video card will be involved in the work (which will give maximum performance).

    It remains only to save the entered settings and try to start the game again.

    Adjusting graphics in AMD Catalyst Control Center // to improve performance

    And so, let’s go directly to the setup. First, open the Control Panel. AMD Catalyst Control Center. To do this, just click on the icon in the tray, or just right-click anywhere on the desktop and follow the link “Graphics Properties” (or “AMD Radeon Settings”). see fig. one.

    Note! I will show the settings of the video card on an ordinary “average” laptop for today, with two video cards: one built-in. IntelHD, and the other discrete. AMD. In principle, for PC owners, or for those who have a laptop with one video card, the setting will not be fundamentally different (unless there are small “errors” in the designation and translation of some menus).

    Next, you need to open the “Games” section. then the tab “Global settings” (in older versions of drivers, the section “Configuring 3-D applications / System parameters”).

    After that, to enable the maximum performance of the video card, you need to specify the following (see Fig. 2, some menus may differ, but the main thing will be the same):

    • Anti-aliasing mode: use the application settings (this way we can set the settings in each application (game) independently (if they are there));
    • Sample smoothing: use application settings (similar);
    • Filter: Standart;
    • Anti-aliasing method: adaptive multiple sampling
    • Morphological Filtering: Off;
    • Anisotropic filtering mode: Use application settings;
    • Anisotropic filtering level: Use application settings (16x);
    • Texture filtering quality: Performance;
    • Surface Format Optimization: On;

    Frame rate control:

    • Wait for vertical update: Always off;
    • OpenLG Triple Buffering: Off;
    • Tessellation Mode: AMD Optimized;
    • Max Tessellation Level: AMD Optimized.
    • Frame rate control: Disabled.

    After changing the 3-D graphics settings, open the “Power” section. then the PowerPlay tab. This tab is responsible for managing GPU performance when the laptop is running on battery or mains power. In general, you need to set the “Maximum performance” parameter on both tabs (as in Fig. 3.).

    Note: this option may not be available in some driver versions.

    By the way, please note that in the new versions of AMD Radeon drivers, it is possible to optimize the adapter for performance (or quality) literally in 2 mouse clicks. To do this, just click on the AMD icon in the system tray next to the clock (see example below in Fig. 3.1).

    Configuring AMD Radeon for Games

    There are several reasons why the video card does not work at full capacity right away. For example, a missing or outdated video card driver. All this will be discussed in more detail in the current article.

    Attention! Depending on the model of the video card and the type of software (AMD has both Catalyst Control Center and Adrenalin Software), the type of installation and configuration will be different. Be guided by the instructions below and the names of menu items, buttons.

    Installing the latest driver version

    The driver is the video card software, it is through it that the operating system interacts with the graphics adapter, which affects not only games, but also some programs.

    Installing the latest AMD software consists of the following steps:

    • Go to the official AMD website for further downloads, then download the software for your version of the video card.
    • Select a directory (you can leave it as default) to download the file and click “Save”.
    • Unzip it to any directory convenient for you (by default, the C: AMD directory is used), and click the “Install” button.
    • Accept the terms of the license agreement and continue the installation with the appropriate button.
    • Install the “Recommended Driver” on your computer (the additional one is a test one and may contain a lot of glitches and errors).
    • Select “Express Install” (“Custom” is only suitable for very experienced users who are unlikely to go online for advice).
    • After installing or updating the driver, it is strongly recommended that you restart your PC. Without this, changes made during the driver installation process will not be fully applied.

    Attention! It is recommended to update the driver software regularly, otherwise new games may not work correctly! This can be done in the previously shown way.

    How to set up a graphics card on an amd radeon laptop

    Good day!

    Not so long ago on the blog I posted a couple of articles to accelerate video cards from nV /.

    In general, I should note (from my experience) that AMD video cards are among the best in terms of speeding up and increasing the number of FPS by fine-tuning the power supply and 3-D graphics. Perhaps that’s why I’m still not indifferent to AMD.

    According to my observations, even without any overclocking, the AMD video card can be “point-wise” adjusted and thus increase the number of FPS by at least 10-20% (and even if you resort to overclocking and “tricky” settings of the game itself.) !

    If you have an IntelHD or nVidia graphics card, then I recommend the following articles:

    Where to begin? With drivers!

    The driver version sometimes has a big impact on the performance of a video card. If you do not have the “native” AMD drivers installed (with the “AMD Catalyst Control Center”). then you will not be able to customize them for yourself.

    This can happen, for example, if you haven’t updated your drivers after installing Windows. It is very easy to check whether this is so, try clicking on the desktop, anywhere, with the right mouse button. is there a link to driver settings in the pop-up menu (usually: “AMD Catalyst Control Center”, or “Graphics Properties”. see. (See Figure 1 below).

    Therefore, a simple advice before starting to configure the video card is to update the drivers (the link is given above): perhaps new functions and parameters have appeared that will help optimize the operation of your hardware.

    By the way, 15 years ago, I had an ATI Radeon video card (I will not name the exact model now). The bottom line is that in addition to the official drivers, there were “not official” drivers. Omega Drivers (by the way, an excellent driver package).

    So, by installing these drivers and turning on the maximum performance (in their settings), it was possible to significantly increase the performance of the video card!

    I could not pass one level in the game in any way, tk. he was terribly slow (FPS: 27-30). After installing Omega Drivers and configuring them, the FPS went up to 36-40. Not a lot, but it allowed to pass the level.

    Approx. : Now there is no point in installing Omega Drivers (this was not an advertisement, just a demonstrative example).

    Configuring the driver itself

    After installing the current version of the AMD driver, you will see tangible results. Game performance will increase, and non-working projects may start to launch. Nevertheless, there is an opportunity to further improve the situation in the settings of the driver itself. How to do it:

    • Right-click on an unoccupied part of your desktop and select “AMD Radeon Settings” in the pop-up window.
    • Set the “Shader Cache” and “Tessellation Mode” parameters to “AMD Optimized”. This will give a tangible increase in performance in games using these technologies.
    • It is recommended to enable “Virtual Ultra High Resolution” on all monitors (if there are several). This will allow you to use display resolutions that are not officially supported by your monitor, which can be a good way to improve the picture in older games.

    Preparing an AMD video card for games is very simple, you just need to install and correctly configure the driver, no other actions are required.

    Thank me, share the link with your friends on social networks:

    If during the battle the FPS on the laptop is always too low, we suggest doing the following:

    I. Make sure the computer meets the system requirements.

    II. Establish a high-performance energy plan.

    III. Disable all performance-impairing programs and Internet programs.

    IV. Check how many video cards are installed in the laptop.

    V. Switch the video card to discrete.

    Vi. If all else fails, create a support ticket.

    I. First, make sure your laptop meets the system requirements for the game.

    We advise you to focus on the recommended requirements.

    II. High performance energy plan.

    Go to “Control Panel” “System and Security”.

    Set “High performance”. Adjust monitor brightness if necessary, as brightness may change when switching performance.

    III. Disable all performance-impairing programs and Internet programs

    Antiviruses (as a last resort), clients for downloading files (for example: uTorrent, Download Master, Zona, FlashGet and others), programs providing text and voice communication (for example: Skype, ICQ), close the browser and other unnecessary applications. Especially in this situation, it is worth highlighting the antivirus, since during the game it checks various files and this, to a certain extent, loads the system.

    IV. In order to find out the number of video cards on your laptop, follow these steps:

    Click the Start button, enter the word “device” (without the quotes) in the search bar and select “Device Manager” in the list of results.

    Having two display adapters listed means your laptop supports switching between graphics cards.

    If there is only one display adapter listed, most often the laptop does not support this switching.

    So, we have determined that the laptop meets the system requirements of the game, can switch between video cards and has a properly configured power plan. Now you need to properly configure the video card for the game, since, most likely, the built-in Intel graphics card is automatically used on the laptop and this causes a decrease in FPS. To use a discrete graphics card, follow these instructions:

    Va. Nvidia Control Panel. For Nvidia GeForce graphics cards

    If your system has an AMD Radeon or only Intel graphics card, then go to section Vb.

    Make sure your laptop has up-to-date drivers for the Nvidia GeForce graphics card. To install driver updates, the manufacturer recommends using the GeForce Experience program, which monitors the release of a new driver for your video card and automatically updates it. After installing the driver through the GeForce Experience program, be sure to restart your computer.

    Setting up Nvidia GeForce video cards is done through the “Nvidia Control Panel”.

    To open this panel, right-click on the desktop, in the drop-down window select “NVIDIA Control Panel”.

    In the Control Panel, go to the “Manage 3D Settings” tab. In the global settings, specify the Nvidia processor as preferred and click “Apply”.

    Go to the “Software Settings” tab. In the first paragraph, click Add, then Browse. Find the Castle.exe file (located in the folder with the installed game PrimeWorldCastleCastle.exe) and PW_Game.exe (located in the folder with the installed game PrimeWorldPvPBinPW_Game.exe), then click “Add selected program”.

    In the second item in the drop-down menu, select “High-performance Nvidia processor”.

    Important! After adding Castle.exe, don’t forget to click “Apply”, then add PW_Game.exe and also click “Apply”.

    Restart your computer and start the game. If you do not notice an increase in the FPS value or it will not be significant, then follow these steps:

    Launch “Nvidia Control Panel”. Go to the “Adjusting Preview Image Settings” tab, select “Custom Settings Focusing on:” and drag the slider all the way to the left so that “Performance” appears. Click “Apply”, restart your computer and start the game.

    Do not forget to close unnecessary programs when starting the game.

    If after following the suggested instructions the FPS level does not change, then switch the game to windowed mode and lower the graphics settings to the minimum.

    Vb. ATI Catalyst Control Center. For AMD Radeon graphics cards

    If your system only has an Intel graphics card, then go to section VI.

    Before starting the settings, make sure that your laptop has the latest drivers for the AMD Radeon video card. To install the driver update, download the AMD Driver Autodetect utility to determine the best driver for your system from the AMD official website. The utility does not need to be installed. just run it and it will automatically offer to download the required driver. After installing the driver, be sure to restart your computer.

    To change the settings for switching video cards in ATI Catalyst Control Center, follow these steps.

    Click the Start button and enter CCC (in English layout) in the search box, then select CCC. Advanced from the list of results:

    From the Catalyst Control Center menu, select Switchable Graphics.

    Select Browse to locate the executable file for the application you want to configure. In our case, these are the executable files Castle.exe (located in the folder with the installed game PrimeWorldCastleCastle.exe) and PW_Game.exe (located in the folder with the installed game PrimeWorldPvPBinPW_Game.exe).

    Click Apply to save the new parameters.

    The changes you make will be applied immediately. Restart your computer and start the game.

    Do not forget to close unnecessary programs when starting the game.

    If after following the suggested instructions the FPS level does not change, then switch the game to windowed mode and lower the graphics settings to the minimum.

    Vi. If the instructions did not help to increase the FPS

    Many laptop models are equipped with a discrete graphics accelerator manufactured by AMD. These can be laptops using processors of the same brand, as well as those based on Intel. There is no fundamental difference: all settings in any case are performed using a special utility for managing the graphics accelerator.

    The program is called ATI Catalyst Control Center. As a rule, it is installed automatically, along with the drivers for the AMD graphics card. Please note: Nvidia’s control panel does not respond to competing video adapters. For discrete and integrated video cards, you need to use the same type of drivers: either universal or OEM.

    How to enable AMD discrete graphics on a laptop:

    • Right-click on the desktop and select AMD Radeon Settings (or Radeon Settings) from the context menu.
    • Go to the System section.
    • Select “Switchable Graphics”.

    In the “Recent Applications” tab, all programs that have been launched on the computer are displayed here. For some applications, it is impossible to change the defaults: they will always run on the integrated video card in order to save energy.

    For unlocked programs, you can select one of the following modes:

    • Power saving. only integrated graphics will be used.
    • High performance. the program will run on a discrete graphics card.
    • Based on power source. if the laptop is running on battery power, it will use an integrated video accelerator, when powered from the mains, a discrete.
    • It is recommended to select the high performance mode for gaming. Changes take effect after clicking the “Apply” button.

    If the running game is not displayed in the list of recent applications, you need to find it yourself in the list by clicking the “Installed profiled applications” button. As you can see, the difference in the settings for switching AMD video cards is only in the Catalyst Control Center. All other methods described above can be used to activate them on a laptop.

    BIOS activation

    This method implies that as the main video card. the laptop will use a discrete one and run all applications through it. To start the BIOS, you need to turn off the computer and press the Delete, Escape, F2 or F10 key before loading the operating system (depending on the motherboard and the BIOS version embedded in it).

    As a rule, the necessary settings are located in the Advanced section in the Chipset or Display tabs. Set the Primary graphics card or Graphics device to Discrete graphics (optionally PCI). To save these settings, you need to press the F10 button and restart your computer.

    Setting up the control panel

    This method forces the laptop to switch to a discrete graphics card automatically when a specific application is launched. Their list can be customized as it is convenient for the user.

    This is also done through the Nvidia Control Panel. If a utility is added to the autorun list (and this is always the case by default), its icon is displayed in the system tray in the lower right corner of the screen. Click on it with the right mouse button and select the required control component.

    Next, go to the “3D Settings” section in the “Settings Management” tab, where you need the program settings tab. In the drop-down list, select the application for which you want to change the settings. Set the “CUDA. Graphics Processors” to your preferred video adapter. By default, there are always global settings, which are determined by the BIOS of the computer.

    After saving the settings, the selected program will switch to the discrete graphics card.

    This is a bit inconvenient, since you need to assign separate rights for each application. However, the average user on a computer, as a rule, does not have many games installed. on average, no more than a dozen.

    In the same menu, you can fine-tune the video card for a particular game. for example, disable anti-aliasing or vertical sync. Some of the settings on this list are simply not available in the settings menu of many games. It is worth making changes if the performance of the graphics accelerator is not enough for the normal operation of an application that is demanding on PC resources.

    Features of interaction between integrated and discrete video cards

    A more powerful video card consumes more power and creates additional noise: a powerful cooler is used to cool it. However, its performance is already sufficient for running 3D games, processing graphics or rendering video.

    Switching a video card from an integrated to a discrete one is not always performed correctly. There can be many reasons for this, including incorrect settings.

    To use the operational capabilities of the laptop to the maximum, you need to change the integrated video card to a discrete one.

    The methods described in this manual will work only if the system has drivers installed for the graphics adapter you are interested in. In their absence, the laptop simply does not detect the required device and, accordingly, will not be able to switch to it.

    Also, keep in mind that you need up-to-date Visual C and DirectX libraries to run games and applications for graphics and video. If they are absent, the programs will work incorrectly: refuse to start, crash to the desktop with an error, or show artifacts when rendering some models and textures.

    Launching an application on a laptop using an nvidia card

    This method assumes the following: for all applications, the integrated video card is used by default. A program or game that is more demanding on the performance of the graphics adapter is launched manually by the user through a more powerful video card. To change a discrete card to an integrated one, a couple of mouse clicks are enough, but this option must be configured beforehand.

    To do this, click the “Start” button and select Control Panel, and then find the item “Hardware and Sound”. We are interested in the NVIDIA Control Panel utility. Select in the main menu at the top of the window of the opened application the item “Add the option” Run with GPU “to the context menu” and check the box to activate this function.

    Now, before starting a game or other application, just right-click on its shortcut, select “Run with a GPU” and specify a discrete video adapter in the list. The system will not switch between graphics cards on a laptop: Intel HD Graphics will be used by default.
