Where is the second hard drive installed?
The second hard drive is installed in the optical drive bay (CD, DVD). Do not be afraid that you will be left with the ability to burn discs. Many people find it much more convenient to exchange information via flash drives and the Internet, and the drive is used less and less. Even Windows can be installed using a bootable USB stick.
Instead of a drive, you can increase the amount of stored data or the speed of your laptop. Agree that there are more pluses than minuses.
Second hard drive in laptop
Almost all laptops come with one hard drive. The ability to install a second hard drive or SSD drive into your laptop will increase the amount of stored information or the speed of your computer, with minimal financial investment.
Advanced PC users may need to install another hard drive in the computer to increase the amount of stored data or an SSD drive to speed up the system.
Of course, one can simply replace “native” laptop hard drive on an SSD drive, but this is extremely NOT economically profitable, because the of SSD and HHD differ markedly.
Installing a second hard drive instead of a drive is fairly easy. As a result, you will increase the space for storing information or, in the case of installing an SSD drive, increase the performance of your computer. The extracted optical drive, using a special container, can be converted to a portable (external) drive.
Installing a second hard drive is pretty easy. All we need is a screwdriver, a hard drive and a special mount (hard drive container).
Do not forget that a hard drive is installed in the laptop, the form factor of which is 2.5 “. DO NOT mix it up when buying, otherwise it will simply not fit into the connector. How to choose the right hard drive, read How to choose the right hard drive
So, when you have chosen a hard drive or SSD drive, you can start the installation.
What to do after installation
You have installed a hard drive or SSD instead of a drive. The computer should detect it exactly as if it were installed in a regular connector. You just need to format its hard drive and partition it.
If you installed an SSD instead of a drive, then you need to configure it correctly.
Step 3. Installing the container into the laptop
Gently slide the hard drive container into the drive seat and secure with screws or latches. Close the laptop cover and secure it with screws.
Step 2. Installing the Disk into a Container
Place the disc into the container and secure it with screws. As a rule, fasteners are supplied with instructions and problems in installation will not arise.
Step 1. take out the drive
To do this, you need to Unscrew the back cover of the laptop (it is fastened with screws). Now look at the place where the drive is located. It can be secured with screws or special latches. Disconnect the drive from the laptop and carefully remove it.
4 Comments “Second hard drive in laptop
All that is simple at first glance is only.
Installed on ASUS A6vm at the beginning, when connected, it stopped loading only after I put a jumper on my native IDE disk And made it a servant, both disks were identified, and the one in the drive compartment was the main sata disk.
But here’s the problem with Windows-8 I can’t get tired of it, that is, I can’t boot from this disk, writes that recovery is required and that some boot file is missing.
On Samsung Q35, it does not work at all to put instead of a drive during installation, it stops loading and does not see both disks.
If possible, tell me how to solve this problem.
Try using an external DVD-ROM. specific advice I can not, NOT having such a laptop at hand
And not something that a laptop drive, a mini power connector and not a regular one!
Adding a hard drive in Windows 10
A hard drive is an integral part of any modern computer, including those running on the Windows 10 operating system. However, sometimes there is not enough space on the PC and you need to connect an additional drive. We will talk about this later in this article.
Adding HDD to Windows 10
We will skip the topic of connecting and formatting a new hard drive in the absence of an old and working system as a whole. If you are interested, you can read the instructions for reinstalling Windows 10. All options further will be aimed at adding a drive with an existing system.
New hard drive
Connecting a new HDD can be divided into two stages. However, even with this in mind, the second step is NOT required and in some SEPARATE cases may be skipped. In this case, the performance of the disk directly depends on its state and compliance with the rules when connected to a PC.
- As mentioned earlier, you first need to connect the drive to your computer. Most modern drives, including those for laptops, have a SATA interface. But there are also other flavors, such as IDE.
Taking into account the interface, the drive is connected to the motherboard using a cable, the options for which were presented in the image above.
It is important to clearly fix the device in one permanent position in a special compartment of the case. Otherwise, vibration caused by the operation of the drive may negatively affect future performance.
Laptops use a smaller hard drive and often does NOT require disassembly to install. It is installed in the compartment reserved for this and is fixed with a metal frame.
In most cases, once you plug in the drive and start your computer, Windows 10 will automatically configure it and make it available for use. However, sometimes, for example, due to the absence of markup, additional settings must be made to display it. We have covered this topic in a separate article on the site.
After initializing the new HDD, you will need to create a new volume and this procedure can be considered complete. However, additional diagnostics should be performed to avoid possible problems. Especially if you notice any malfunctions while using the device.
If, after reading the described manual, the disk does not work correctly or remains completely unrecognized by the system, see the troubleshooting guide.
In addition to installing a new disk and adding a local volume, Windows 10 allows you to create virtual drives in the form of SEPARATE files, which can be used in certain programs to store various files and even working operating systems. We have considered the creation and addition of such a disk in maximum detail in a separate instruction.
The described connection of a physical drive is fully applicable Not only to HDDs, but also to solid-state drives (SSD). The only difference is the mounts used and is NOT related to the version of the operating system.
How to get rid of bad sectors on laptop HDD
As mentioned above, bad sectors are one of the main reasons a laptop freezes. It is better to solve the problem NOT with built-in utilities, but with the help of a special program.
Victoria is one of the popular apps that you don’t need to pay for. Works in DOS mode.
How to cure or remove bad sectors:
- Launch the software. Disable Secure Boot first if the laptop uses a modern BIOS UEFI.
- A selection menu will open, and after a couple of seconds the application will give you download options. Here you need to select the second item.
- Then you need to tell the system to download software for laptops.
- When the window opens, press P. This allows you to select the drive with which the program needs to work.
- Then you need to select the HDD port. To do this, you should call it “Ext. PCI ATA / SATA “.
Tip: If you need a laptop to work with graphics, the A1990 MacBook Pro comes in handy with a powerful CPU and a gorgeous display.
- Select a hard disk, confirm your selection with the enter key and press F9. Analytics will open, which will display the status of the HDD. The fifth line from the top contains the number of blocks intended for the spare sectors. Their number is limited, so when the reserve runs out. information in broken sectors. bad. is lost. The number highlighted in red indicates that the hard drive needs to be treated.
- Name F4. A menu will open. It is not necessary to change anything in it, except for the fourth point. By default, it is marked “Ignore Bad Blocks”. In this case, the program will simply test the storage medium. But in order for it to fix bad sectors, you need to replace the Ignore message with BB = Advanced Remap.
Tip: when buying an HDD, you should take a closer look at its format. 3.5-inch options. for PC, 2.5 “- for laptops.
After replacing the software, it will try to write data to Bedy. If it works, the number of bad sectors will decrease. the utility will cure the disk. If she fails to write information to such a sector, then she will replace it with a backup.
Hard disk data recovery software
The table contains other good utilities that can recover information from drives.
Tip: for working with text, presentations and spreadsheets, web surfing, a small laptop like the Probook 430 G5 is useful. Its hardware allows the device to easily cope with everyday tasks, and a half-terabyte HDD makes it possible to store multimedia files.
How to recover a logical HDD partition and all its data
Third-party programs do the best for this. One of the most convenient is the free RS Partition Recovery.
After starting a window will open which will show:
- All storage media, as well as logical partitions;
- Volumes of drives, occupied space;
- User-selected files (including hidden ones).
How to work with the program:
They will call “Master” and mark the partition or drive that needs to be restored in the window that opens.
Click “Next” and select the type of hard disk analysis: fast or full.
Tip: it is better to mark the last option right away, put a checkmark in front of all the lines, which will be displayed below. In this case, the utility will determine, scan and restore all files in NTFS and FAT, and will also be able to recognize all data regardless of which file system they are in.
The software will restore all the information it finds on the hard disk, cure the logical partition.
How to recover a laptop hard drive and all the information on it: 4 working methods
Something is clearly wrong with the hard drive? Files are lost even though the user hasn’t deleted them? The article will tell you what happened and how you can restore the HDD and data on it.
How to identify a hard drive problem
If the hard drive has been serving for many years and constantly overheats, or if the user has dropped it, problems may begin, even if the device looks normal. It is not so difficult to understand that something is wrong with the hard drive. While there are many symptoms of storage problems, they are all related to data processing difficulties. The main thing is to notice them in time.
Tip: if you want to change the hard drive in your laptop, the WD20SPZX will do. It contains a couple of terabytes of information, is distinguished by a low noise level and speed of operation.
- Formatting error. Usually appears due to broken HDD sectors, a virus, a power surge, if the laptop was connected to the network at that time. Also, incorrectly installed updates or incorrect partitioning of the disk into partitions may be a prerequisite.
- The computer is constantly rebooting. As a rule, the point is in the bit boot sector, which was caused by mechanical damage to the HDD or a virus file.
- Sometimes the data disappears. If the user is sure that he did NOT delete personal files, but they disappeared somewhere. the reason is in the storage.
- Extraneous noise from the laptop. may indicate that there is a problem with the disk heads, chip, controller.
Is it possible to return data without special programs?
It is possible to restore information using standard Windows tools, but not in all cases. As stated above, this is real when the file system fails.
You can also try to format the HDD through the command term, opened on behalf of the administrator, but the data is unlikely to be saved.
Interesting: there are hard drives, which are capable of transmitting up to 1200 megabits of information per second. They are usually designed for servers and have a fast rotating spindle. 00WG700. just like that.
How to understand if data recovery is possible?
You can find out how critically damaged the hard drive is and whether it will be possible to recover files using Special utilities.
Ways to recover a hard drive on a laptop
The methods described below include working with both standard operating system tools and special programs.
Troubleshooting a file system crash
This error is easy to notice: the OS does not allow the disk partition to be opened, displaying a message that the storage needs formatting. over, if you look into the properties of the device, there seems to be no information on it.
The classic utility CHKDSK makes it possible to cure the hard drive. You do not have to work through the BIOS: everything is done through “My Computer”.
What to do:
- Find the system disk in the above folder and right-click on it (RMB).
- A window will appear where you need to enter the “Service”.
- They will call it the name of a special program, and then. “Check”. Here you need to set the necessary testing parameters so that all errors are automatically eliminated by the utility.
The same can be done through the command term. Launched it, enter chkdsk c: / f, where “c” is the system partition. In case it is indicated on the laptop by another letter, you should enter it.
Also, the software will ask you to restart the laptop. This must be done, otherwise the utility will NOT work.
Recommendation: If you need a good laptop for business, multimedia, then the IdeaPad 520-15IKB will do. It is productive, has a high-quality screen and is equipped with ample storage.
Which is better laptop with hard drive or SSD?
SSDs are lighter than HDDs because they are made up of chips. At peak load, the drive consumes up to 2 W, the hard drive “eats” up to 7 W. Thus, the SSD can reduce electricity consumption by 80%. SDD has a limited number of write cycles, and hard drives sometimes refuse to work.
What hard drives are used in laptops?
Laptops are supplied with drives of several types: HDD (hard disk drive). is a mechanical device that stores recorded information. A special magnetic head writes data to plates (magnetic disks) located inside a hermetically sealed case.
How to find out if there is a hard drive on a laptop?
For Windows users
- Right-click on the “My Computer” shortcut;
- Click on “Manage”;
- Go to the tab “storage devices”. “Disk management”;
- Also in the “Device Manager” tab, select “Disk devices”, there you will see the disk model.
How to connect an external HDD to a laptop?
When connecting an external hard disk to a computer or laptop, you need to connect the cable on one side, using a USB or mini-USB plug, to the disk, and connect the other end of the cable, with a USB plug, to the computer to the USB port. Then wait while the computer detects the new device.
How to find out if there is a SATA connector in a laptop?
Launch HWINFO. First of all, we can look at the characteristics of the motherboard. On the left pane, expanding the “Motherboard” branch and on the right side of the window, we see that the tested computer has SATA III support. these are two ports, marked “6 Gb / s”.
How to find out if there is an SSD drive on a laptop?
Check if your PC has an SSD via Device Manager
Open Device Manager by Right-clicking the Start button on the taskbar and selecting the Device Manager option. In the Device Manager window, expand the Disks tree to see the disk name, which also includes the disk type (SSD or HDD).
Which is better HDD or SSD for laptop?
SSD: Faster, Lighter, Stronger? Power consumption of “solid bodies” is much lower than in hard drives, which is very important for the autonomy of a laptop. They work quickly and reliably, giving the user instant access to the necessary information. Feature of SSD. limited number of write cycles.
How do I insert a hard drive into a laptop? How many hard drives are in a laptop?
As a rule, a modern computer has one hard drive by default. The system is installed on it and all files and documents are stored. But this is a little bit wrong. It is better that the computer has two physical hard drives.
How to split drive into C and D on command line
All that was described above can be done Not only using the Windows Disk Management graphical interface, but also in the command line using the following steps:
- Run Command Timeline as Administrator and in order Use the following commands.
- List volume (as a result of this command, pay attention to the volume number corresponding to your drive C, which will be compressed. Next. N).
- Select volume N
- Shrink desired = SIZE (where size is the size of the D drive being created in megabytes. 10240 MB = 10 GB)
- Create partition primary
- Format fs = ntfs quick
- Assign letter = D (here D. Desired drive letter, it must be free)
At this it will be possible to close the command period, and the new drive D (or under a different letter) will appear in Windows Explorer.
How to create drive D in Windows
One of the frequent wishes of the owners of computers and laptops is to create a D drive in Windows 10, 8 or Windows 7 in order to subsequently store data on it (photos, movies, music and others) and this is NOT only meaningful, especially in the case if you reinstall the system from time to time, formats the disk (in this situation, it will be possible to format only the system partition).
In this instruction. step by step on how to divide a computer or laptop disk into C and D using the system tools and third-party free programs for THESE purposes. This is relatively easy to do, and even a novice user can create a D drive. May also be helpful: How to increase drive C while counting drive D.
Note: to perform the steps described below, there must be enough space on the C drive (on the system partition of the hard disk) to allocate it “for the D drive”, ie. Highlight it more than free, but it won’t work.
Create Drive D with Windows Disk Management
All recent versions of Windows have a built-in Disk Management utility, with which, among other things, you can partition your hard drive and create a D drive.
To launch the utility, press the WinR keys (where Win is the key with the OS logo), enter diskmgmt.Msc and press Enter, after a short time Disk Management will load. Then follow these steps.
- At the bottom of the window, find the disk partition corresponding to drive C.
- Right-click on it and select “Shrink Volume” from the context menu.
- After searching for available space on the disk, in the “Size of space to compress” field, specify the size of the created disk D in megabytes (by default, the full size of free disk space will be indicated there and it is better NOT to leave this value. there must be enough free space on the system partition for work, otherwise there may be problems, as described in the article Why the computer slows down). Click the Compress button.
- After the compression is complete, you will see a “case” from the C drive with a new space labeled “Not allocated.” Right-click on it and select “Create Simple Volume”.
- In the opened wizard for creating simple volumes, just click “Next”. If the letter D is NOT occupied by other devices, then at the third step it will be offered to assign it to the new disk (otherwise. the next ones in alphabetical order).
- At the stage of formatting, you can specify the desired volume label (signature for drive D). The rest of the parameters usually do NOT need to be changed. Click “Next” and then “Finish”.
- Drive D will be created, formatted, will appear in “Disk Management” and Windows 10, 8 or Windows Explorer, the Disk Management utility can be closed.
Note: If in the 3rd step the size of the available space is displayed incorrectly, i.e. The available size is much smaller than what is actually available on the disk, which means that non-relocatable Windows files interfere with compressing the disk. The solution in this case is to temporarily disable the paging file, hibernate, and restart the computer. If these steps did not help, then additionally perform disk defragmentation.
Using the free Aomei Partition Assistant Standard software
There are many free programs that allow you to split your hard drive into two (or more). As an example, I’ll show you how to create a D drive in the free program in Russian Aomei Partition Assistant Standard.
- After starting the program, right-click on the partition corresponding to your C drive and select the “Partition partition” menu item.
- Specify the dimensions for drive C and drive D and click OK.
- Click “Apply” at the top left of the main program window and “Go” in the next window and Confirm restarting the computer or laptop to perform the operation.
- After a reboot, which may take longer than usual (do not turn off the computer, provide power to the laptop).
- After the disk partitioning process, Windows will boot again, but there will already be disk D in Explorer, in addition to the system disk partition.
This concludes. The instructions are intended for those cases when the system is already installed. But you can create a separate disk partition during Windows installation on your computer, see How to Partition a Disk in Windows 10, 8 and Windows 7 (last method).
Guide to Add a New Hard Drive in Windows 10
The hard drive is designed for a very long life. But despite this fact, sooner or later the user faces the question of replacing it. Such a decision may be caused by a breakdown of an old drive or a banal desire to increase the available memory capacity. In this article, you will learn how to properly add a hard drive on a computer or laptop running Windows 10.
Adding a new hard drive in Windows 10
The process of connecting the drive implies a small disassembly of the system unit or laptop. Except when the hard disk is connected via the USB connector. We will tell you about THESE worthy nuances further in detail. If you follow the instructions given, then you should not have any difficulties.
Drive connection process
In most cases, the hard drive is connected directly to the motherboard via a SATA or IDE connector. This allows the device to operate at the fastest speed. In this regard, USB drives are somewhat inferior in performance. Earlier, an article was published on our website, in which the process of connecting a drive for personal computers is described in detail and step by step. over, it contains information about both the connection via the IDE cable and the SATA connector. In addition, there you will also find a description of all the nuances that should be considered when using an external hard drive.
In this article, we would like to talk separately about the process of replacing a drive in a laptop. You can’t just add a second drive inside a laptop. In extreme cases, you can turn off the drive, and put additional media in its place, but not everyone agrees to make such sacrifices. Therefore, if you already have an HDD installed, and want to add an SSD drive as well, then in this case it makes sense to make an external hard drive from the HDD drive, and install a solid-state drive in its place.
To replace a drive internally, you will need the following:
- Turn off your laptop and unplug it.
- Flip base up. On some laptop models, there is a special compartment at the bottom, which provides quick access to RAM and hard drive. By default, it is covered with a plastic cover. Your task is to remove it by unscrewing all the screws around the perimeter. If there is no such compartment on your laptop, you will have to remove the entire cover.
It remains only to screw the hard drive, close everything with the cover and fix it back with screws. This way you can easily install additional storage.
Like any other device, the drive requires some setup after connecting to the system. Fortunately, in Windows 10, this is easy enough and does not require additional knowledge.
After installing a new hard drive, the operating system often “picks up” it immediately. But there are situations when there is a connected device in the list, since it is NOT initialized. In this case, it is necessary to give the system of concepts that this is a storage device. In Windows 10, this procedure is done built-in. We talked about it in detail in a separate article.
Please note that sometimes a situation arises for users when, even after initialization, the HDD is NOT displayed. If so, try the following:
Click on the “Search” button on the taskbar. In the bottom field of the window that opens, enter the phrase “Show hidden”. The desired section will appear at the top. Click on its name with the left mouse button.
A new window will automatically open on the desired View tab. Scroll down to the bottom of the list in the “Advanced Options” section. It is necessary to uncheck the box next to the “Hide empty disks” box. Then press the button “OK”.
As a result, the hard drive should appear in the list of devices. Try to write any data to it, after which it will cease to be empty and you can return all parameters to their places back.
Many users prefer to divide one large hard drive into several smaller partitions. This process is called “Markup”. We also devoted a separate article to him, which contains a description of all the necessary actions. With her.
Please note that this action is optional, which means that it is not necessary to perform it. It all depends on your personal preference.
Thus, you learned how to connect and configure an additional hard drive in a computer or laptop running Windows 10. If, after completing all the steps, the problem with disk mapping remains relevant, we advise you to read the special material that will help solve the issue.
Installing a second hard drive in a laptop. Some general information about installing a second hard drive in a laptop
A small comment from Andrey: to install a second hard drive in a laptop, first of all, it is necessary that there is space for it. This has already been said at the beginning. Usually there is a place for a second hard drive in laptops with a diagonal of more than 16 inches. In smaller laptops, the space inside the case for another hard drive is trite.
It is also worth considering one more not quite obvious point. Some notebooks have a slightly different base cover for one hard drive and two hard drive configurations. Roughly speaking, there are two options for the bottom cover.
How can you check if you can install a second hard drive or not? In fact, there is one very simple way. You simply remove the main hard drive and replace the second one. Winchesters are essentially the same in size, port and hole locations. The same goes for SSD drives. When you install the main hard drive in place of the second, it will immediately become clearer what needs to be done, what fasteners are needed and whether another cover is needed for the laptop or not.
Please note that all questions about hard drives are discussed in this forum thread: Hard drives. Selection, replacement and other issues. SSD drives are discussed separately here. Solid state SSD drives. There you can ask any questions that interest you. Do not forget to also look through the topics themselves before doing this.
This concludes my comment and move on to Vitik’s review.
Let’s start installing the second hard drive
Warning: this material is for informational purposes only, describing my personal experience, and in no case is it a guide to action, since the described techniques are NOT safe.
After rearranging the hard drives of the laptop and netbook, I was left with one extra drive of 160 gigabytes, which was gathering dust idle instead of being useful. I decided to insert it into my Acer as the second one. Both free space and a special frame for mounting the disk were already provided in the design of the laptop, exactly like two Special connectors on the motherboard next to the disk bay. If the SATA connector was absolutely ordinary (apart from the one that “looked up”), then the way of supplying power was Not quite ordinary:
To check whether it really makes sense to spoil the cables, the hard drive was connected “on the fly” and was successfully recognized both in the BIOS and in Windows, after which I already confidently took up the main work:
For the most experiments I needed:
A short six-pin ribbon cable was found for power supply, it seems to be used in the CD-ROM. Such loops are quite standard and are often used in various equipment:
Two-thirds of it was brutally bitten off and after half an hour of cutting with a file, it ideally fit to the corresponding connector on the motherboard, besides, the extreme wire was red, which was convenient, it successfully became a “plus”, and the white one, respectively, “ground”.
The other “end” of the connector was removed from the Sata drive power adapter. According to the pinout, the middle three pins of that connector (they are connected and stick out like one red wire) are used to supply 5 volts, and 6 adjacent (three on the left and three on the right, stick out like two black wires). ground. I didn’t bother to think about which ground to use, and just soldered to both at once.
We got such an adapter, and after that the part with open contacts was filled with glue:
Another test was the rework of the Sata cable itself, since the original one would under no circumstances allow the laptop lid to close, as it was too long and sticking out downward. I was already delighted to find a cable from another motherboard, which was bent to the side, but thanks to either the Acer engineers who unrolled their connector in this way (they tried to fit their adapter), or the creators of that motherboard, the connector looked into the wall of the case, what finally forced me to cut the train.
The most problematic part was “disassembling” the connector. I came across a train tightly filled on both sides, and it took a lot of time to tear off all the rubber without breaking the very pins of the connector. As a result, the ends of the pins themselves were bent to the side and a shortened cable was soldered to them, and then, as in the case of the power supply, the whole structure was filled with glue for reliability and protection against short circuits:
The only bottleneck in my upgrade was the connectors themselves. In view of the design and location of the connectors themselves, as well as the presence of glue on the Sata, after installing the contacts, they must be pulled back with special care, since they come in very tightly and securely, and there was no possibility of removing them by hand (although, I did and made notches for the tool). On the other hand, the need to remove the loops is NOT expected:
After everything was finished and checked, it turned out that I was faced with another problem. the lack of screws to secure the hard drive to the frame. I didn’t find any, but I removed two screws from the main drive mount and rearranged it to the additional one. In my opinion, the disk was held quite securely on two screws, so that’s how I left everything.
As a result, the picture came out as follows:
The device manager, like the BIOS, easily recognizes the second disk:
To my surprise, there were no problems with the disk, although I was afraid for the operability of the Sata loop after surgery and for the possible unreliability of the contact. the result is no worse than using a factory adapter, and with minimal costs, although in my case, without any costs at all.
Comment from Andrey: If you liked the article, then put a plus sign in the reputation of the Vitik user. Yet the man tried, prepared an article.
I also remind you that you can ask all questions about hard drives here: Hard drives. Selection, replacement and other questions, and for SSD drives here: Solid-state SSD drives. Do not forget to look through the topics themselves before asking.
If you want to publish an interesting article about your laptop, then contact me (FuzzyL) via private messages. I will help with design and publication.
If the system does not detect the hard drive, then you need to determine the reason.
It is required to connect the hard drive to the system unit. If the device is successfully detected, there may be a problem in the software, otherwise a defect in the hard drive.
What to do when Windows 10 does not see the second hard drive
First you need to define a hard disk. Hard disk or “hard drive”, also known as HDD, is used to save data. All computer files are located here (there are only minor exceptions). It contains Windows 10, along with all the information. Thus, if the hard drive is NOT displayed, the information from it will also be unavailable.
Working with software
If, after updating Windows 7 / 8.1 to Windows 10, the operating system stopped seeing the second hard drive, then below are the optimal actions to fix the problem. This instruction will also help if the user has installed an HDD or SSD in the system unit, but only the BIOS sees it, and does NOT display the operating system explorer. And if the BIOS does not show it, then you need to analyze the correctness of the hardware connection.
“Enables” the second hard drive correctly
It is necessary to press the R keys, call the Run menu, type diskmgmt.Msc. Then press Enter. This will launch the Windows 10 Disk Management utility. At the bottom of the window there will be an area where the disks are listed, study the following information in them:
- “There is no data. NOT initialized “- this will be written if the physical hard disk or SSD is not displayed;
- Are there parts on the disk where “Not allocated” is written. this is if there is no partition on virtually partitioned space;
- In the absence of the above, the RAW partition and NTFS or FAT32 partitions are displayed, they are NOT visible in Windows and are NOT assigned a volume letter. It is required to click on it with the right mouse button and name it “Format” (if RAW) or “Assign letter”.
- Right-click on the area name and name it “initialize”.
In the menu that appears, define the partition structure. MBR (in Windows 7), or GPT (GUID). For Windows 10, GPT is better.
Next, you need to right-click On the unallocated part, select the item “Create simple volume”.
Follow the Step-by-step instructions for creating a volume: choose a letter, determine the file system (NTFS is better) and the amount of gigabytes of space. If you do not specify how many gigabytes there will be, then it will take all the unallocated space.
After completing these steps, the second drive will appear in Windows 10, ready for use.
Using the command term to ensure the visibility of the second disc
It is required to display the command term with the administrator’s capabilities, then enter the following commands in sequence:
- List disk
Write down on a sheet of paper or remember the number of the not displayed disk (hereinafter. X). Run the command select disk X pressed the Enter key.
If the second hard drive is not visible, then use the following commands. Caution! Files will be erased! If you need to save files on a section that is NOT displayed, you cannot perform the above actions. So, sequentially enter the commands in the console:
- Clean (removes all files);
- Create partition primary (it is possible to set size = S, the size of the area in MB, if multiple partitions are required)
- Format fs = ntfs quick
- Assign letter = D (prescribe. D).
complex operations can be performed using the command line, but it is recommended to use it only if you have the necessary knowledge in this area. Also, before doing this, you should save the necessary information in advance.
An alternative way to the built-in capabilities of Windows is to use Special Applications for Partition Recovery.
