What is the climate like in Barovia? ›

Only the malformed evergreen forests maintain any semblance of life, as everything else hibernates or dies. In the place of snow, Barovia occasionally gets ice pellets and, even rarer, freezing rain. The average temperature during winter is 28°F with an average low being 23°F and the average high 33°F.

The sun never fully shines in the lands of Barovia, and even during the day the sun is obscured by clouds and fog, casting everything in a muted, grey light.

The sky of Barovia was permanently overcast with storm clouds. Even during the brightest hours of the day, light was unnaturally muted and dimmed, and did not affect normally sensitive creatures such as vampires. In many locations, the mists partially or completely obscured vision.

Barovia has its own calendar, and Barovians are accustomed to measuring the passage of time in "moons" instead of months. As a measurement of time, each moon begins on the first night of a full moon and lasts a full lunar cycle. A year consists of twelve moons, or twelve lunar cycles.

Barovia is a Melancholic Realm Encircled by the Mists. Barovia is a demiplane bordered by the Mists, which act as living vapors that often seep out into the Material Plane to pull strangers within.

The setting as a whole is Ravenloft, the particular Domain of Dread is Barovia, the castle is also Ravenloft, and the village is also Barovia. Basically the castle and village came first and then later the Domain of Dread and the setting as a whole were named after them.

The land of Barovia resides in its own demiplane, isolated from all other planes, including the Material Plane. No spell—not even wish—allows one to escape from Strahd's domain.

By the will of the Dark Powers (Vampyr), the sun never fully shines in the lands of Barovia. Even during the day, the sky is dimmed by fog or storm clouds, or the light is strangely muted.

Sunlight Hypersensitivity. While in sunlight, Strahd takes 20 radiant damage at the start of his turn, and he has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.

Adventurers frequently find themselves wandering into Barovia, but once they emerge from the otherwise impenetrable mists that surround the valley, they are unable to escape. The only people able to exit Barovia are the mysterious bands of Vistani, who have some kind of arrangement with Strahd.

Can Strahd control weather? ›

Control Weather: Self explanatory. Strahd can manipulate local weather at will. Death Spell: Can instantly slay any creature within the locale, and diminish their life force to the point that they cannot be revived short of altering causality itself.

That all being said, be aware that this is definitely a GRIMDARK, HORROR game. It delves into some very dark, disturbing places.

Barovia is an ironic twist of Strahd's desires where the people and land itself act out an endless cycle of despair and horror, and by defeating Strahd they may only save Barovia for a short period of time.

It does depend a lot on playstyle, but you're looking at a year of D&D nights, easy, or more if you have shorter sessions. Let's say it takes 100 hours. You meet every week. If you want to do 2-hour long sessions, that is literally a year of playing every single week.
