5 Min Ice Cream Recipe - Food.com (1)

I had 10 kids do this as a birthday party activity and it turned out great. I do recommend doing it outside as the kids weren't always paying attention and got salt water everywhere from bag leaks. Some used half and half, one used fat free/lactose free filtered milk, one used vanilla soy milk. I didn't try the different ones to check out the texture, but they all set and the kids had no complaints. Nice that I could accommodate some dietary restrictions.

Add salt and the freezing point drops by a few degrees. When you add salt to the ice in the outer bag, the ice (at 0°C) is now above its freezing point – so it begins to melt. Melting requires energy, and in this case that energy comes from the flavoured milk mixture in the inner bag.

Take your zip-top bag and fill it with water until it is 2/3 of the way full. You can also opt for less water, but don't overfill it! You want room in the bag for the water to expand as it freezes. Put it in the freezer, ideally sort of nestled between some other things to give it a bit of shape.
